I got to meet him right around this time in New York City and let me tell you Jaco had the strongest hand shake I've ever felt from anyone. It was like a vice and I think it's got a lot to do with his sound. Sounds so effortless but there's a lot of strength in his hands. Scary strong!

It took me a while to realize that there is no keyboard/piano on stage! Jaco is so good at laying down the groove whilst taking care of all the harmony, especially during the solos. The whole band is magnificent!

This cat is so above my playing (not to toot my horn but I'm a fairly decent bass player) I love listening to him. It is some kind of indian war paint or something. I read that sometimes he would put shoe polish on his face. This video is from around 1982 or so. This is the point he began loosing touch with reality. He was a severe manic depressive/bi-polar and also a severe alcoholic and cocaine addict. He was put in a psychiatric hospital at least once. His playing is still incredible here. About a year after this, record companies almost wouldn't touch him. His behavior became so erratic. In the 70's during his first solo album and most of the time he was in weather report, he wouldn't drink, use drugs or anything. His is really a sad, sad story. I have his biography somewhere, and I re read it about once every year or two. Tragic story.

The folks who agrue that Jaco is not the Goat of the modern electric bass absolutely fail to understand the complexity with which he played the instrument at a time when the electric bass was still relatively young having been ushered in my Leo Fender via the P-Bass in the late 1950's. His Bass of Doom is a 1966 Jazz Bass that he converted to fretless on his kitchen table using a butter knife, wood putty, and epoxy, and THEN you add his speed, and most importantly on a fretless, his perfect accuracy and intonation. NO ONE of that time or since has done this on the Bass. His own son acknowledges the uniqueness of who his father was a player and innovator, and purposely does not even attempt to mimic him. Instead, he focuses on playing primarily the 6-String Bass creating his own style, because as he stated in an interview, "I have my father to thank for my talent, but I am not him and cannot imitate him; so I do not try despite many people hoping I would". That says it all when his son (who is an outstanding bassist in his own right) acknowledges that his father is the man.

Love how comments about Jaco veer so carelessly and tactlessly towards his mental illness. Yes, the man had some issues that were sadly untreated and caused the decline of a musical icon. That’s hardly the important thing to enshrine and it’s really sick that everyone has to gawk about the problems he faced. I get that it’s all part of the Jaco mythos, but it’s time for people to get a damn grip and talk about how bloody awesome he is, and leave it at that. When there’s a good reason to talk about his mental health (which it is very important to talk openly about), then let’s do that, but not just talk about it for no reason, because it neither helps advance mental health issues, nor does it show respect to Jaco’s legacy. It just perpetuates the fascination with people’s pain instead of their triumphs.

Well, a little context -- right? Zawinul was envious of a genius half his age, and was playing the role of the disapproving father because they never were out of competition. But even while Jaco was going whacko, he did way more important work than anything Zawinul could do after 1977. Any disagreement on how i am explaining the story?

ootrip40 The following is a general statement, that is not of necessity directed at you specifically: everyone should be allowed an opinion, but that does not make anyone immune from criticism. does it occur to you, that an opinion, might also be perceived as an insult to other people? so,i can have a ton of historical data behind me,and here comes little ol you with an ill conceived opinion. i'm for free speech, but not for elevating opinion to the realm of sacrosanct. way too many simpletons and scoundrels, hide behind,"well it was just my opinion". we need more contemplation and thoughtfulness;not more shallow knee-jerk fucking opinion.

If anyone contradicts you just show them this video and ask them if any other bass player, living or dead, can do what Jaco did on this stage. If they are honest, the answer will be no. Jaco held this group together, he was the harmony, bass, percussion, and soloist simultaneously. I literally cannot even recall any other bass player coming close to this performance in sheer musicality.

Geez this takes me back. Remember seeing this ensemble on tour in Royal Oak MI. Way back when it was. I remember thinking “no keyboards no guitars yet, there’s no chordal instruments needed.” Total balls out jam for maybe 1.5 hours. Then, after a “the end”, Jaco rises out of a pit on a white organ alone and plays an epic encore which was indescribably perfect. Totally unexpected and maybe was never recorded. Would love to see it if it was. I’ve seen many shows but if you asked me which was the highest quality this would be it. Funny but sad maybe side note. Was in the lobby before the show with lots of others and I see Jaco in the crowd going into a public bathroom. I’m like 16 years old. Weird. Didn’t seem normal. Figured he was doing something he shouldn’t have been doing in that moment. Expected that he was maybe getting some product from a local. I get it though. He’s not diminished in my mind at all. The greatest geniuses often have to self medicate just to feel comfortable communicating their art.
