Fight almost breaks out during California and Louisiana Softball game over bad Weather

- Down 1-0 going into the seventh, Brooke Ellestad led off with a double and after Sam Roe’s infield pop, the heavy rain came. Cal’s coaching staff wanted the game delayed.
Apparently, the umpiring crew knew the rain would leave shortly - which it did - so they played on.
Cal freshman southpaw Randi Roelling threw two wild pitches to chase home Ellestad with the tying run. That immediately led to an eruption from Cal’s irate bench - leading to an ejection of an assistant coach and catcher Lagi Quiroga.
Instead of UL seizing the new-found momentum, the Cajuns failed to capitalize.
After Alexa Langeliers walked, it appeared Victoria Valdez’s bunt was misplayed, but the replay overturned the ruling to out at first base.
At that point, Roelling walked Laney Credeur and coaxed Mihyia Davis into a pop out to force extra innings. - Спорт

The announcer also incorrectly stated that Univ of Berkeley was in Southern California. I guess education in Louisiana is optional.

@@Jo3W3st come on, there is a curtain of rain, its clear... gonna get technical? They tried to cover it up

@@Jo3W3st@Jo3W3st Nooo, he said: "It's really not raining at all... now"
You know since YOU are wanting to be technical and all. 😅
This is 1,000% on the umpires. They lost control of the game and they refused to apply common sense. As a result you have coaches on the field, players on the field and the opposing team challenging the team on the field.
Why? Because the umpires refused to make a decision that the weather was negatively impacting the game and the safety of the players.
The best part is all the pomposity coming from Lousiana, when in the end California WON haha
Nice! Was the game this year? Louisiana was probably that way because it’s “wimpy” California. The umpires should have shut the game down for safety concerns. As a coach I’d have been pissed too.
Home field advantage. Just listen to the commentary.
If louisiana was pitching and up one the umps would of defiantly called the game. What little Legue crap
It may be out the Umpire's hands. I don't know how the NCAA works, but I do think the umpire's have at least some discretion and should suspend play
Once the picture stated she was having trouble gripping the ball the officials should have gotten together. And especially, once the coach also tried to talk to them. They umpires escalated this. There is nothing wrong with a rain delay to make sure there is fair play. Those pictures made it clear. I have never seen such terrible pitches back to back in softball outside of a bad middle school team. Terrible umpiring.
The home plate ump must be new to D1 because it seems he tried to get the group together immediately going towards the 2nd base ump and looks like he made the decision alone. I don't understand why if after the Umps say to play (which was wrong) one of the players in outfield (umps never watch outfielders) just fake an injury ncaa softball has no time limit so this would have given the Umps more time to get together rather than feel rushed.
Hopefully at That Time a BETTER decision is made.
Sucks that any team of player would resort to that, but they NEVER should half too.
SMH.
Glad Cal Still Won.
They wanted Louisiana to win but it failed. California won lmao
It's softball theybdidnt want to be there all day
It's amazing those "pictures" didn't speak up sooner! Those "pictures" really miss me off! Damn "pictures"!!!! Wait...what? What's that you say? You mean they're called pitchers? Not "pictures"! Ohĥhh...I got ya. Pictures are what you hang on the walls!! Well...they ought to hang those damn "pictures" on the wall then! They can't grip the darn "balz". 😂
At the very least give the girl a dry towel
Former youth, HS, and college sports official here. My rule of thumb was simple. If a pitcher reported that he or she could not maintain a grip on the ball because of rain, we were done. The number one job of an umpire is to ensure the safety of the players. I live in SoCal so we did not the volume of rain that those in NorCal would get but we were subject to the sun setting on a regular basis. One of the questions I would always ask my catcher and batters is whether or not they could clearly see the ball during twilight hours. As an older adult my visual acuity is not on par with a teen or young adult. They still have clear vision when we don't. As soon as just one player told me they were having a hard time tracking pitches, we were done.
😢😢😢
Twilight is rough even when you're young . It can be downright scary when it's all of a sudden "there" outta nowhere .
The pitcher’s grip on the ball being compromised is actually cited in the NCAA softball rulebook, so not sure why 3 umpires couldn’t make a decision to at least halt this game.
@@Rooster2.6They must have wanted Louisiana to win. And the announcers were lying about the rain stopping.

"Now it's not even raining." Shows batter in the box with dumping rain.
Ain't no expert, have watched college softball for many years, hundreds of games. If the pitcher or catcher cannot grip the ball to maintain control the umpire should use common sense and call the game before it gets to this point. Have lived in So Cal for many years but up north they get more than we do, it's usually sunny and warm but if you can't grip the ball it's no longer fair.
@@timothyrobinson3938Safety first bruh. One bad slip of the ball and hits the batter or the ump.

@timothyrobinson3938 I agree! These people, these athletes, are all weak modern day snowflakes! Lifes not fair and sometimes you just have to play through it!
Note how the Louisiana locals who, per the announcers, are so accustomed to the rain, have all vacated the lower seats and taken cover under the roof of the stands.

absurd they didn't stop the game during the hard rain.
Bc it’s rain lol
@@Dezc887it’s still normal to stop the game for a storm. Thats what’s called a rain delay. A lot of injuries can happen from while pitch’s to slippery bases ect…
I've umpired many games in bad weather and always the concern is for the safety of the players. Hard to tell how hard it's raining on this video but, the field appears to be in good shape. Since it's the last inning, I could see trying to complete the game, especially with the home team down a run. As for the pitcher yelling she can't grip the ball, the rain falls on both teams. I don't like the coach coming out of the dugout to argue and then the plyers getting into it. Easy to see the umpires lost control quickly.
@@Dezc887guess you don’t follow most sports.
@@760649 Unless there is lightning present or the rain is so substantial that it makes playing impossible they will play on in the rain. Yesterday at LSU, I was at a baseball game where they played despite rain. They will try to avoid stopping a game in the last inning for rain.

Calling CAL located in Berkeley southern CA is peak stupidity
umps created the environment honestly not wanting to do the right thing in instead try to rush the game through without care for the girls safety
They were bottom of the 7th with one out… he just wanted the game to be done already
The bleachers looked like the Oakland Athletics were playing. Hard to blame the guy. 😅
The soft ball is so big any water would make it exponentially more difficult to grasp
The phenomenon of synchronization.
It's dangerous pitching with a rain-slippery ball. Might have been a different story if Cal's pitcher, instead of missing far outside, had plunked the hitter in the ribs.
Gee I wonder which team the umps were favoring. You can see the batter coming towards the catcher as the catcher backs away. Guess who got thrown out.
If that rain was coming down early in the game, the officials would have delayed the game. Since it was the last inning, I can understand why the officials were trying to finish the game. I can see it both ways - rain delay or play on.
So they let a brief rain impact the game enough to allow Louisiana to tie and go to extras. Mission failed
A short delay to make the game fair would’ve been fine as opposed to fixing it for the Louisiana team would’ve been appropriate.
@@CalminCali Good thing California is better and won the game
Love me some Ragin Cajuns !!! My niece was Valedictorian many years ago. Now 1st grade teacher at Woodvale.
I was an NCAA umpire in the '80's and if a coach approached me and told me the pitcher was having problems gripping the ball due to the rain and it was reasonable to think the rain was an issue I would have paused the game until the rain let up considerably......I was also a fast pitch pitcher and know that a wet ball is difficult to control............umpire could have avoided all the nonsense with a simple common sense call...........
That was a pretty packed stadium.
It's funny how the station pumped in recorded fan noise because there is no way that the dozen or so spectators were the ones making that much noise.

Why does someone always have to hold the person back? I'd just let them go and see what happens. Probably nothing.
Now, what would have happened if the pitcher lost the grip on the ball and it went up an in toward the batter's head instead of down and away? These umpires have a duty to make sure the game is not only played fairly, but also safely. Would the home plate ump be yelling at Louisiana's coach coming out to argue if their batter was unconscious at the plate?
Love the high all gold socks with the gold belts
"It never rains in Southern California"? First of all, Berkeley is in the Bay Area which is Northern California, and second, it's raining in Louisiana!

During new umpire training, this should be Exhibit A in the section "What not to do as an umpire"
as soon as the ump saw that the pitcher lost control it is on them for player safety to delay the game
Hometown broadcasters and umps that just wanted the game to be over. The umps should be looking at suspensions. What possible reason could there be for not delaying the game? Yup, dinners waiting, and this will help the home team.
Love those raging Cajuns, Lafayette Louisiana.
If you have never played it heavy rain before it greatly changes the game and your ability, hence why most games are not played in the rain.
Cal Assistant Coach coming back out merits a bigger suspension. Head coach should replace her. Made her look weak and as if she didn't have control of the team.
Umps were confused why so much $$$ is being wasted to bring a girls softball team from N. Calif to Louisiana. Me too.
Good, we need more fighting in sports. This was the norm back in the day.
Classless
That's just mist in Louisiana. Play on!
Thats the most exciting Softball game Ive ever seen
I said the same ! 😂😂😂
Was it raining in the top of the inning too? I mean, rain doesn't automatically delay the game. With it in the last inning, umps are usually going to do everything they can to finish the game. You don't often see delays in the bottom of the 9th in baseball. If there's no lighting, chances are they are gonna try to finish it. Get a the pitcher a towel and a rosin bag and get the show on the road.
Umpire could prevented all this from happening
Cali kids arent used to the rain, Lafayette kids are. its not about UL wanting an advantage, its about home field. UL is accustom to the rain, it was at there home field, so naturally they gonna wanna play to finish the game. if it was at Cal it would of course be a different story. the thing is, the problem is why the Cal players were acting out of hand. If theres a problem, players have to let the coachs handle it. No player should be acting in a way towards the other teams player that gets them ejected.
🤦🏽♂
Yet California STILL WON lmao
California won the game still
The umpires showed very poor judgement!
UL alum here when they were still USL (Southwestern Louisiana); and yeah, this was pure Cajun home cookin'. The ump crew should have stopped the game when the rain got progressively worse; but I suppose they were retaliating for what went on in the previous game, when some of the Black Cal players took to a knee during the playing of the National Anthem, inflaming the home Lady Cajun crowd. For better or worse, Cal ended up winning this particular game in extra innings. I'm a fan of the Lady Cajuns, but that was indeed bush-league. No need for that.
Had to be a Californian. Ain’t no surprise.
Bad officials always raise the tensions….
1:10 what’s with the tag at home? You damn well knew you didn’t have the ball 😂😂😂😂
Probably habitual
These guys need to stop acting like spoiled little children, and man up! Treat them like they act!
If the pitcher cant grip the ball and the umps let the game continue it means its fixed.
OMG, rain? Can they only play on a perfect day, sunshine, no wind, no clouds. Take up soccer.
Your ignorance of the sport is palpable.
In Louisiana, this ain't rain....
Some of the worse umpiring I’ve seen! The very first rain caused wild pitch should have rain delayed the game.
i’m just gonna say if i was a catcher and a ump came almost running toward me with his hands up i would have been thrown out for the season bc i would have messed him up
Those umpires outta be FIRED for this huge of a mistake when it was obvious what needed to be done. Absolutely inbred
Even the fights are boring.
I watch women's softball on ESPN+. If there ever was a group of players that show good sportsmanship I would say it's the softball players.
We played in the rain. Game was only called if it was lightening
A softball is impossible to control when it's wet. It's difficult with a smaller baseball but at least there's a chance. Those smaller hands trying to control a softball in the rain is not going to happen.
The umpire is trying to get the full game in and not have any further delays. He probably is in a hurry to get home. But at some point, enough is enough. I too would have pushed it if I too was the umpire.
I didn’t even know it was raining till they said it was raining
Looked like the Cal players were upset with the LA dugout all the sudden. Gee I wonder why🤔
California won the game, keep cryin
I guess they should learn how to deal with the elements.
what a clash of two totally different cultures that handle this situation in different ways
I grew up 40 miles from Berkeley. Absolutely fuck that place, you can see the entitlement in their actions. It’s disgusting.
I was thinking the same thing!
You mean the hillbillies in the stands who don’t care about player safety in an obviously fixed game. This shows how one “culture” (your racist undertone has been noted, while I’m sure plausible deniability will follow) is willing to stand by while they know they’re cheating someone, and the other culture is willing to stand up and fight. Turn the circumstances around and see what happens. I think you already know the ump would’ve stopped the game at the behest of his redneck brethren.
Their team is comprised of liberal progressive trash.
Yet California is the team who won the game
Glad to find out Cal ended up winning this game...........if the louisiana coach was any kind of coach, he wouldve met with the Cal coach and umps and agreed the game needed to be halted. shows me a lot about type of person he is too. i gotta look him up now, just so I know who the person is with no character. But with Louisiana currently at 7-8 I can see why their fans wanted the win so bad, regardless of the weather
If the field is dry and playable, you play ball. That Cal. coach has no class. Disgraceful.
Well California won so... bothered?
Why have we gotten so soft that you cannot play in rain? UL had to play (hit and pitch) in it as well. It is part of the game. There is no seeable safety issue, other than a coach inciting her players. Learn to play in adverse conditions and move on.
Baseball has never been played in the rain, you galaxy brain.
It's very difficult and potential dangerous to try to grip and rip a softball when it's very wet.
So, when you say "there is no foreseeable issue", you are talking out of your ass.
The fact that the NCAA created rules for the Assistant HC to be booted for talking about officiating is wild. Just another example of the lack of accountability regarding officiating.
