      Works great and if you have gutters there is probably granular material you can scoop up and place along that sealant line to blend it back in .

    Just read in another article about this, to go look in the gutter and find some of the asphalt granules. Sprinkle it on the roof cement when your done and it will blend in better.

      Sift the granules from the gutter first through a sieve, then in a 5 gallon bucket, pour in clear water, stir well, and slowly pour off the clay back through the sieve. Repeat that till the water is clear, and the aggregate is free of debris, then let that dry in a hot sun. When dry, lay down the aggregate over fresh roofing cement, and pat it in. You can also use roofing repair fabric that is already impregnated with bitumen, and lay aggregate over the top of that, and pat it in.

    I would just take the three bad tabs out by carefully prying the shingles above loose, removing the nails from the next two courses above; that are going through the bad shingles, and cutting the bad shingles straight up with roofing shears if needed, and pulling them out. I always order 10% over on shingles, and I have plenty of spares, but if I don't; I can take one to the store, and match it up. If all you can get is roll roofing or a starter strip in that color, you can build a hillbilly architectural shingle by running the strip under until it is 1 inch above the gaps in the next course, nailing it in, then cementing all the way across the top of that to the next course above, and pat it down. Where I pulled the nails out in the second course above, I'll run a wide strip of athletic tape, and nail back through the tape and shingle, then skip strip the roofing cement, and dapping it back down. Skip stripping, or putting down dime sized daps will hold the shingle bottoms down, while still letting water drip out if a leak develops later above the repair, which will happen before one of my repairs ever fails. Running continuous beads can trap water, and cause blisters under the repair, which will crack the shingle. Shingles are a water shedding component, not a waterproofing component.

      Interesting comment! Love all the details, definitely is more work your way. I have never had an issue or a leak simply gluing down the existing tab. Takes about 60 seconds vs replacing the whole tab then your new tab don't match and sticks out like a sore thumb. When I glue them down you can't even tell it's been repaired.

      @@DrDemp It is getting harder to find any three tab shingle that will match. Worse case, you can get hip and ridge shingles that match, and replace a tab at a time. I have always ordered 10 percent over, and now they are worth a mint. You can't find these shingles anymore. The purpose of the adhedive, is to keep the shingle from bending up and down in the wind, and breaking off; not for water proofing. With a three tab, it is easy enough to loosen the adjacent tabs, and removing the nails in the shingle you want to replace in its own course, and the one above, if you have replacement shingles. If not, I would run a starter strip under, adhere the broken shingle like you did to it, and dap the starter strip under the course above. This is the construction used in architectural shingles. The problem with them, is if you get one damaged shingle, you have to tear the whole roof off, and redo the section on that whole side. You can't whittle those shingles apart once they have consolidated, without damaging the adjacent shingles to one degree or another.

    Why you didn't want to replace the whole shingle?

    • @DrDemp
      @DrDemp  3 роки тому +1

      Replacement of an entire shingle for only a tab being broken?

    • @lesio333
      @lesio333 3 роки тому +1

      @@DrDemp I understand the way you think but the tab is one unit with its base. Once it's cracked the water will get in and to seal it correctly you would have to put roof cement all over under the tab, especially broken line. No?

      💯 correct. Replace full shingles is the only acceptable repair method.

      I gennerally prefer to use asphalt roof repair. Home depot or lowes sell similar products.
      Polyurethane roof sealant works as well.

    Folks - if this an HGTV watcher’s DIY homeowner quick fix - okay. If you want this type of issue fixed correctly, you have to contact a professional ASAP after doing this. These are 100% incorrect repair techniques and will lead to further issues. Like your cousins fixing his plumbing problems with duct tape.
    Also - almost GUARANTEED there are additional severe damages to this roof that would call for a full roof replacement - hopefully insured and will be covered by insurance claim. You’ll only have to pay your deductible.

      There is no damage and no leaks from this single repair that I preformed 2 years ago. Be sure to use quality asphalt roof repair some of this is guaranteed to last 15 years as noted on the container.
      Everyone may not have the same results, as I was documenting my experience to share with the youtube community that is not traditional.

    This is not the 100% proper way to repair.. you should pull whole shingle and replace it. However the cost of roof repairs we all just do what we can, just using tar is a temp fix and it will work.. I've read questions in here can you do this while wet ? YES you can, Just use wet patch tar.. get a few tubes or a gallon of wet patch and a plastic putty knife and you'll be fine.. just put a little tar on outside of the crack to be sure its sealed... this will work for few years... and to get the tar off your hands, alcohol or gas works great..
