- Repairing a roof leak is not always difficult. Sometimes just knowing exactly where to put the roofing cement is half of it. This video walks through repairing a roof leak if protruding nails are the problem. This is 3 different situations with the same general theme. All three nails are in different locations.
This is a common roof leak that is very easy to repair, especially on asphalt shingles. Over time the nails will work themselves up and will need to be repaired.
Judging from the curling shingle corners and the massive degrenulation of the roof lifting nails my guess is it needs venting ... And a new roof those shingles are toast !
This roof should have been replaced several years ago. Just getting the water to stop coming in for the moment as a new roof was not in the owner's plan in the near future.

How would one go about this fiasco....
Roof leaks during mid-to-heavy rains. It is dripping down through the wood decking along a few specific nails (visible from the attic side).
I know roof needs replacement (actually overdue to be honest) along with the wood (rotten looking in places due to the leaking).
Its also leaking between the exterior wall and soffit, ridge vent, and ceiling above window (this is just from leaking areas "expanding').
This home is in Florida so no ice dams or snow melt.
Forgot to add - nails where water dripping into attic space are not visible or popped through roof shingle surface. The water is not necessarily wind-driven (just a good straight rain without winds causes the leaks)
Really just need to lift the shingles and see if there are loose or crooked nails. Also, if there is decking or 1x6 sheathing, if there is a row of shingles where the nail ends up in between, those nails may leak. They are just dangling and are not set into any wood to seal them. Water does get under the shingles in some places especially in lams if there is a bump in the right place.
1. Good idea about spreading some of the asphalt from the gutter. I never thought all that erosion could be recycled.
2. It's 2017 now. How's the repair holding up? I have similar scenario with nails. Would like to extend the life of roof for 5 years before going to Tesla roof that would be cheaper 5 years from now.
3. Looks like a lot of places, you did not re-nail so looks like solution would be to use cement in lieu of nails. So would using cement be as good as nails keeping shingles in place?
1 - what came out of the gutter was granules that had come off of the shingles over time and I used them to cover the roofing cement so it would be protected from the sun and not so unsightly.
2 - Holding up fine. Where I put the roofing cement is going to last a while.
3 - better to use nails, but not going to matter if it is sealed underneath, but I would err on the side of using nails (that is nailing where you would normally nail the shingles)
Finally found my chalk after searching for a week. I got 6 spots where nails are exposed so look forward to marking and repairing them methodically.
i have put a short screw with a wide tappered head and roofing cement i place of a popping nail
It is a good idea but I would make sure the screw is long enough. Roofing nails are only 1 1/4" so that is still pretty short.
Should you have replaced the nail at 5:20 ? Is it acceptable to simply cement down the shingles, or did you forget?
+DukeLaCrosse20 Looking back, it could have gone either way, but no matter what roofing cement was needed to seal the hole. The roofing cement under the shingle (or under the shingle that was missing the nail) will adhere it down similar to a nail, and the roofing cement on top adheres the tabs above from blowing up. This roof needs to be replaced so this repair is more of a get-by until reroof. Thank you!
WHAT happens when the weather changes and that same nail pops again, i remove the nail and fill the hole with roofing cement/black tar. the nail is popping because the wood sheathing is expanding and contracting
That can work too. I think I may have done that a few of the times.
