  • In this video I show how I repaired a roof with broken asphalt shingles. This 3-tab shingle roof received some minor shingle damage in a strong wind weather event. The result was several shingles with broken and missing tabs. The roof repair process is to replace the damaged shingles with new three-tab asphalt shingles. To replace the shingle, several roofing nails must be removed that hold the damaged shingle to the roof. This requires pulling nails out of both the broken shingle a well as the shingle above it. A new roof shingle is inserted in place of the old one and nailed into the roof with a hammer. Then some roofing cement is added over the old nail holes and to help hold the shingle tabs in place.

Furthermore working on a roof can be extremely dangerous and even deadly if one were to fall. It is critical to be careful and to utilize appropriate safety gear. It is advised to check with local building authorities before working on a roof.

Even though my Dad has the prior knowledge to help me with this, I still like to watch the videos for myself. I have a larger section that needs patching, wood repair, and thankfully the old owners left behind a bunch of the shingles in the garage. Hoping for a good match afterward! Thought about getting some roof cleaner to bring the old ones back to life a little, and with a little luck, you'll never know anything was patched

WOW! My Late Dad used to DIY shingles, before he got Older.
ME?? I'm a Wuss. I don't like heights (even on a one-story, low-pitch ranch house.) But, Also, I had NO idea there was So much involved!.
I've been meaning to have a Dimensional roof put in, but the contractors ran out of time this year. Those roofs last a LONG time, and it would be a selling point for my house.

For those who aren't roofers and don't know how to walk on a roof I think you're leading down the wrong path. I believe you should at least mention harness, retractable, or rope , lockdown plate screwed to roof.
