Decentraland: The virtual land selling for millions - BBC Stories
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2018
- Investors are spending real money to buy land in a new city that only exists in virtual reality. Buyers can build whatever they want on their plots in Decentraland. Many hope to make a profit trading goods and services in the virtual world's own crypto currency. But will Decentraland be an online utopia or a cyber slum?

This whole era feels like a fever dream looking back on it
I'm here because my .22 cent MANA coins rose over $1 today. I'm officially a believer with the latest developments

I remember when I just got into crypto back in 2019 but later in 2020 I ended up selling it because I was dumb and I didn't understand it. I studied and learned and now I know how it works. Got back into crypto early in 2023 with 10k and I’m up with 128k in a short period of time.
I'm new to cryptocurrency and don't understand how it really works. how Can someone know the right approach to investing and making good profits from cryptocurrency investments?
I have lost a lot when I acted alone and without a guide. It was a bumpy ride for me. Who is your mentor please? How can I get in contact with you? I really need help in this market now?
As a beginner investor, all you have to do is to have a mentor to keep you accountable.
How can someone know a professional account manager that is trustworthy and legit they are hard to find this days.
Sincerely speaking. I will continue to trade and stick to Reynold Felicia daily signals and guides as long as it works well for me.
I love the idea but decentraland just isn't there yet. We need the same thing with graphics more like Grand theft auto.
so do you want to be when at peak? surely not - you are not gonna be pioneer
When it is on the peak , you got zero chance to touch it , maybe but how much ?
this video is 3 years old. the graphics look much better now. Also, the GTA of crypto games will be PolkaCity. check it out!
The idea is for the platform to be open to as many people as possible. Putting GTA style graphics will kill performance, making it possibly unplayable in browser and on most older computer systems.
This is a pretty interesting thing. You have a bunch of people running to a virtual decentralized matrix while existing in an actual centralized matrix. This is virtual sedation right here. "We control you but we'll let you live in a virtual world where you have an illusion of control. So you won't actually do anything about the control we have you under." 🤷🏿♂️
truth
Nicely put.
All these fools who are going crazy about "decentralised" this or decentralised that don't tell people that none of it will work if centralised systems in the real world do not provide electricity for them!
Lately there's a lot of noise about decentralised websites '.crypto' domains and decentralised currencies, apparently because your precious digital horse pooh can't be controlled by the government. But there are so many examples of the gov simply disabling ALL internet access in certain cities/countries when they don't want any protests. Only few months ago Indian gov did that to the people of Kashmir for months.
After that, it doesn't matter what system you have, there's nothing you can do. How can you operate your decentralised money/land/domain when you have no electricity, no wifi, no internet access in the whole country or city?
Also, all those tech geniuses who are trying to destroy fiat currency by creating all these fancy cryptocurrencies, but when you buy any of those cryptos i.e. Eth, Bitcoin, Mana, XRP, guess the one important item they want from you deposited into their bank accounts? Yep, you guessed it: fiat currency! Hahahaha...
Well though out!

This is literally for people in the future that wont be able to handle the reality of the real world living in a fantasy reality to escape. It is very sad but I could see it being widely brought to people in the future
Probably augmented reality, real and virtual lands combined. Facebook with project Aria is coming very close.
I feel people already turn to vices to escape reality... I think this presents a better option than what some people use now.

Second Life was before in time and during 15 years we have been able to do what is popular today in "VR", I never seen Second Life as a game but rather a combination of a social platform and a virtual world that give you more mobility and options, it do not replace "reality" but rather extend it. Second Life do not demand users to have any expensive VR tools and Linden Lab (the creators of Second Life) have great experience with policing content and handling bad elements inside the virtual world, so this video was not really "news" for me, but I can understand the appeal if it.
Some say that Second Life look bad, but that is for most creators is not professional game developers, some 3D buildings is made by people that is around 70 years old and never worked with 3D before, other may be handicapped so they only can use the chin to control a joystick to build and interact with other users, when you start to look around in Second Life you will soon see and learn how amazing that world is.
Btw, Virtual Worlds is a great tool for handicapped people, I do not like when they just talk about the money and not how Virtual Worlds can help and improve life for folk with different sorts of disabilities.
Second life wasn't based on a blockchain were all assets are written to the ledger and can never be removed even by the creators or a government body. In this way you actually own everything you buy and nothing can take it away and you can use it in the game however you want.
@Hexapoda I’d never thought of it that way. Thanks for this

I like that this project is gaining momentum.
30 active users LMAOOOO LLLLL
That sounds good.
Amazon could buy a fat chunk and build a virtual shopping mall!
Nooooo
What would be the use for an online virtual store, when it already has it's own website?
this aged well :D
Having played games like Decentraland and being into crypto, I am skeptical. The world should not have been made so finite as a start. Why make it so that it is expensive to get in and own a chunk? That discourages new users. What good does that do for the game? And that is just the start of the problem. It would honestly be more interesting as a centralized project. And I know that is very antithetical to the way that most crypto is and the way I look at it too. But the truth is that it would be more interesting with a Clear Vision and development behind it. Really, what would you rather play, this? Or, Grand Theft Auto with cryptocurrency like features and an Open Marketplace? I think this is a great start, and I think a lot of work went in, but do I think these will take off and be the the biggest things of tomorrow? No I think they are a hype train, just like another crypto bubble that we are in.
How do you feel now about it?
@@Ethan2Tone yeah

@@Ethan2Tone he's still right. Decentraland looks terrible to start with, and it being controlled by users will make it look awful, like a mish mash of random crappola. The money aspect to it is another bubble. If you want something like this to be good, you need it to be centralized.
This is a big and good idea, but it is still growing and not the thing that we expect.
I don’t think decentraland success would be a video game. It would be a secure afterlife world.
How could you possibly believe when you die, your ghost will be roaming in a video game. The key is spend your money in this reality. You only live once. 👏

Sam clare says "he only sells when the market price for the piece of land reaches 10mio". I think it is kinda hard to sell land on such a price class. Because a digital world
is always extensible with enough computing power and efficient software for back and front end. I mean no price rising when the supply likewise rises.
Unless some influencers or big companies are moving in the near of him.
the idea is the new servers have fewer users so they aren't as valuable.

Wow this was 3 years ago. MANA is $4.71 right now
Decentraland will be the kingdom community of the world
Future next-generation gaming is gonna be really expensive. I just wanna back to ps2 era when Harvest Moon is a cool thing
ive been exploring this, as I am a 3d Designer. but There is a downside of this. The question is, "would you pay 10 million for nothing", except for something that exists in cyberspace. On the upside, content is protected by the blockchain security, so your guaranteed it to be unique. But I would never pay 10 million for vapor. People are crazy.
It's like 10 years ago: Second Life and the Lindens (Linden dollars). But now you can change MANA for real dollars. Someone knows what happened with Second Life?
they still make 100m revenue annualy
You could change Linden to dollars. I had a mafia and we sold poker machines to the casinos. We had land, a big mansion and an arsenal of hacks/greefers. One was a nuke that could crash the computer of anyone caught in it. I stopped playing it because it got ridiculously laggy. This decentraland is more or less a rip off of second life. Shame I can't transfer my mansion and sell it 😂
This is not a dumb idea at all.. TBH I asked little kids why they watch other people play video games rather than playing it themselves, hey it works. This will too work.
This will work too.
Things are changing at high speed in a sense that makes it hard for many people to catch up! Very scary!!
Ok this idea is cool might buy some

Can't wait for Virtua, first cross chain metaverse. Great vid! 🔥
oh hey! welcome back ;)
Dam... this was done first by "Second life" i believe.
This is a first because the assets and land are stored the same way Bitcoin is, meaning it can't be erased or removed by the company or a government and eventually rules will be governed by the users themselves.

Guys i’m a longterm investor and bought mana at .09. This project is the one of the best crypto projects out there for gaming and nft’s. People are trying to play game in different ways and this is a hit and soon epic, ea, activision, apple will use mana. According to mana circulation this would worth at-least 100 dollars in next 2-3 years.
Your analysis wason point how much mana you have rightnow
This aged well. How far can this go ?
for the people that *just dont get it* think money.... candy crush had people paying 10k a month for those .99 cent extra spins, world of warcraft had 15 million people in it at one time, and games like league of legends can afford to give awau 1 million dollar prizes from a technically free to play game from people buying skins and thouseands of other business models like that are out there. This or another like it will surely make lots of money, this will work.
Looking at 2020, this looks like a good idea
Facts can't even leave the house
Well mana holders are doing well so far
craaaazzzzyyyy
you can make educational content on top of LAND i suppose, like assemble/dissamble mechnical parts, etc. with VR it would be great, no need real parts to understand the concept. And why decentraland? because it is decentralize, whatever content u have, no third party involving in monetization. VR not only about game
This is gonna be huge. This is the future of the internet. We're shifting from 2D internet to a new 3D internet. The merge of gaming for fun and/or business. Virtual schools. Virtual jobs. Virtual entertainement. Virtual shopping. Virtual sprots. Virtual las vegas and casinos. Virtual social media. Virtual websites. Interactive movies....the possibilities are limitless. I'm hodling to the moon. MANA & Virutal Land. Most people already buy virtual property if they have ever paid to create a website, that's why it's called website address. It's just 2D, but we're moving to 3D but digital 3D is like 4D & 5D.
Hi all, I just noticed the influx of comments since this was released and thought I'd answer some of the questions you all had as well as an update.
Do you still have the land.
No, I am a fine art collector and unfortunately Decentraland doesn't display my collection very well so I have moved to other platforms that are higher fidelity. They have also not implemented VR yet which is unfortunate.
Did you watch Ready Player One.
Yes, my decision was heavily influenced by the movie.
So I am in the process of setting up an NFT onboarding/gallery business. I have over 2000 NFTs spread over 5+ blockchains. I have art displayed in 3 metaverse projects so far (Somnium Space (3068, for now), Oncyber and Hyaliko).
I am planning on getting properties in new and exciting metaverse projects as and when they pop up.

It would be cool if in this crypto world if there were real-world things such as...
-Courts (a justice system).
-Jails, prisons, and micro-sentencing - for certain crimes or violations.
-The ability to, say, interview (any get paid for) for and hold a virtual-job...with even the ability to get fired.
-The ability to collect unemployment (crypto).
Modeling it as much as possible like the real world, IMO, would make it much more interesting.
Seriously, why would anyone pay money - and it costs real money - to stay a part of a virtual world where you would have to interview for a virtual job and get fired? Or to be unemployed. I mean that's what they've got in the real world.
A virtual world that exactly mirrors the real world, including all the negatives and downside, isn't something people would regularly pay for.

All this really blew up recently because of Facebook and metaverse. If this VR stuff does become big, the next thing to predict would be to see which VR world people actually use. Agreed
I agree but at the same time how can we complain when we have not created our own? It's just like people complaining about the government. Why complain? Do something about it. Pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and come up with a solution!
Decentraland is still developing! The crazy part is that this is far from the final product. Adding a layer of eyecandy and textures is the easy part. It gets in the way of developing certain things though

It is HIGHLY unlikely that "trolls" would intentionally ruin Decentraland. They are users and investors themselves. The vast majority of users will be trying their best to increase the value of Decentraland in general, and whatever aspect of it they own in particular. Only fearmongers and naysayers are going to be worried about trolls.
It is highly likely that if there are ever any trolls then there will be a community who would be opposing them. Maybe the virtual land will become another planet or a country where there will be a ruling government, a party, elections going on, and the possibilities are infinite.
