One of the reasons ps1 and ps2 don't have such high selling individual games is they had such a hugh variety of games. Nintendo had a lot of restrictions for games made for their systems.

@@tntbigshow4826 I guarantee that the ONLY reason Nintendo got the foothold it did in North America is because European gamers were perfectly happy with their 8 & 16 bit micros and cheaper games on Cassette & Disk with far more variety at a lower cost. Nintendo struggled over here until the SNES was released. That's why SEGA dominated in Europe. Because they managed to sell the Master System at a good price when gamers could see the writing was on the wall for the C64 and Spectrum so players bought those in droves so as not to be left behind. You just keep telling yourself that America was the bigger market for gaming when Europe and Asia went unaffected. You just keep telling yourself that the crash of 1983 was like a gaming Nuclear bomb that wiped it out in every corner of the globe apart from Asia. You might actually convince yourself otherwise.

From my perspective as a gal being raised in New Zealand.
I didn't even know Nintendo home consoles existed here. We were a Sony stronghold. The PS1 and PS2 were what I grew up with and I didn't even know that the N64 or GameCube were a thing that existed because they didn't even really have any shelf space at my local EBGames.
Nintendo only really got presence in the home console market here in NZ with the Wii. Before that they were getting bodied. The PS1 went nuts here but the PS2 went absolutely GANGBUSTERS.
Outside of handhelds, Nintendo were a non player here, and this roughly extended to other parts of Oceania and Europe as well.
For me, well, I was there, I lived it, the PS1 and PS2 dominated. When they were relevant, all my friends had a PS1 or PS2. A few had an Xbox.
Not a single one had an N64 or GameCube.
I think it speaks for itself really

And basically all the video comes down to is Sony sold better with more games, and Nintendo had a few games that sold better. And I do think that is story of Nintendo's life since n64 and onward. N64 and GameCube didn't have nearly as many good games as ps1/ps2, but it did have a few games that sold better. It really comes off that this guy despises Sony and is a Nintendo fan boy, such an emotional standpoint is unnecessary. They're both companies that brought great games. AFAIK, the Genesis was sold for thin margins. Same with the Atari Jaguar. The 3DO had a huge price cut because it wasn't selling at all prior to the price cut. Nintendo never put a system out at a loss. The 3DS's price was reduced because they couldn't move units at the launch price. Only Sony and Microsoft did this because they had the money to do it and because they had to be disruptive as newcomers to the market.

The PS1 especially had seismic impact on a cultural level, it was the first adult experience for games, they dominated in a market that was cornered by giants, why? Because the games were brilliant, Resident Evil , Tomb Raider, MGS, FF, Crash, Twisted Metal...could go on and on, the Nintendo was viewed as KIDDY CONSOLE in comparison

I think the (positive) problem is that Sony did not have that those IPs like Mario that everyone buys regardless. I say this is positive because it allowed them to experiment a lot more. If they had something like Mario back then, I'm sure the PS1 and PS2 would have far less diverse libraries. Hell, we had 3 mascot platformers on the PS2 that are superb to play, even to this day.
The same could be said about Xbox, the console has a bunch of quirky titles, some are meh but others are very underrated like Crimson Skies or JSRF.
None of these games were ever popular but that doesn't contribute to the fun anyway. Pokemon today is a giant but the games are laughable, it's not a sign of quality. Modern Sony unfortunately ressembles Nintendo too much, focusing hard on the "system sellers" like GoW, Spiderman and TLOU. I think what made everyone enjoy the PS1 and PS2 was that they were a hub of video games, gigantic libraries for everyone's tastes... and that backwards compatibility was great too.

Nah. I'm in my 40s and was there as a young guy with a job and lots of friends. PS1 was basically the only console anyone in the West cared about. Saturn was dead on arrival, and N64 didn't matter to most gamers (just small kids) until after Golden Eye and Ocarina of Time in late 1998 not long before Dreamcast released in Japan and the next Gen started. The N64 was a secondary console that played Zelda and 007.
When the PS2 launched, that was it. Xbox and GameCube was a distant race. Dreamcast had a chance to compete, but was retired early. And GC (like N64) was on the worst console failures in Nintendo history.
As for the Xbox. It launched later in that gen, and want around for more than a few years. It only sold decently in North America at that. But after Halo CE, purely because of LAN parties and early live when Halo 2 hit - the XBOX ended up being peoples secondary platform for North American teenagers and adults who could afford to buy it (it cost more than PS2) as a secondary Halo system.

From my experience at the time, when I was a wee lass, other kids around me had PS1s, but I knew of the N64, it got ample coverage in the one single gaming magazine issue I had, and both my cousin and my neighbour at one point borrowed an N64 for their school holidays, presumably because whoever they borrowed it from had gotten a shiny new 6th gen console, I never went to see them though, cuz since my cousin had borrowed an N64, that meant I could borrow his Super Nintendo, and I was FAR too busy playing Killer Instinct! The ONLY GAME included with the borrowed SNES xD (Bloody good game though!)
The PlayStation went on to become my first proper console, after the PS2 was already out, and I knew it was already out, but I was majorly put-off by the PS2's library, as every game I saw on the system was edgy and violent and umm... Yeah no, I knew the PS1 actually had games for kids, and I was, well, a kid, besides it was being sold as the budget alternative at the time, with the smaller rounder PSone, the one I'll always be nostalgic for~
During that time however, slowly everyone around me was picking up PS2s, and I had no idea what Nintendo was up to, I thought the N64 was still current for the longest time, it wasn't until later that a friend of mine told me: "My cousin has a Game Cube, and it has a fighting game in it with every character! Even Mario!"
And that caught me off-guard, because like umm... Daf@#% is a Game Cube? And also, What Game Is That?!?! And I'd still never actually see one, much like how I hadn't really seen an N64... Well, not until MUCH later... And I actually went on to buy an used N64 circa 2008!
It wasn't until after the Wii was already out, and my mind was utterly blown by it, that I found out what the heck a Game Cube actually was, the funnier thing is, though I'd actually heard of the Game Cube *Exactly Once* years prior, I'd NEVER heard of an "Xbox" until Months Later, when a classmate told me he wanted an Xbox 360, which I was, once again, taken aback, Daf@#% is an Xbox?!?! I may or may not have seen an advert for an Xbox in a magazine before that point, and thought it was made up, that it wasn't real, but I'm not sure if it really was an Xbox or if it was somethine else entirely lol
Long story short, the PS1 and PS2 were the consoles people around me (and in the case of the former, myself) actually had, and the N64 and to a MUCH Lesser extent, Game Cube, were consoles I'd only heard of, but not actually really seen at the time, so like, yeah, they were *Quite Dominant* I'd say, at least outside of America and Japan where Nintendo had much less of a market presence...

Also actually, the PS2 *did* make Sony a crap ton of money. Yes, there isn't one *singular* PS2 game that maybe outsold the best-selling N64 or Gamecube game (tho I'd think there are PS2 games that have outsold vast majority of best-selling Gamecube ones), Sony got WAY more in third-party royalties than Nintendo ever did.
So the 100K, 500K, 1 million etc. copies each game on PS2 did sell, added up when they had like 10x (if not more) the number of games than Gamecube AND Sony were getting royalties off the sale of EVERY third-party game on the system in addition to the money they got from first-party sales.
And yeah that's even with piracy factored in, which wasn't as bad as Dreamcast's and was only really a thing in some of the Middle East, African & South American countries the system wasn't even really distributed in. Since PS2 wasn't legally sold in a lot of those small markets, people there had no choice but to pirate. But they weren't the big money buyers at all, so that didn't cut into a lot of revenue for third-party sales in the official markets.

They enter the gaming market simply so they could get back at Nintendo and Sega. They had no passion for gaming and if there comes a time when gaming gets old for them or if they lose interest then it's likely they too will see their way out, same with Microsoft. Nintendo enter the gaming market cause it works for them and then they had people who work for them that also are passionate about making games, not just consoles but games and innovation for those games. Sega is enter the gaming market cause they too want a piece of what Nintendo had and they are the challengers that once believe only them could stood up to Nintendo. Atari on the other hand are the originator of gaming but being the originator doesn't mean they are anything special. Atari's mistake was that they know how to start but they don't know how to evolve and by not evolving they remain irrelevant and had fallen from the top never to be where the big three are nowadays. The rest (3DO, NeoGeo, CD-i, Amiga, Turbo Grafx-16, etc.) aren't even trying or they tried but failed and never came back.

But in that statement, I just want to say that the PlayStation one was absolutely phenomenal going from two dimensional graphics the year prior to all of a sudden three dimensional worlds where you could travel in any direction, was truly mind-boggling at the time!!
The Sega Saturn, I never had always wanted .. The Dreamcast is one of my favorites of all time...
I had the PS2 and nowadays of course I have a PS five and an Xbox ... I never purchased the Wii.. I did get to play on one and I thought it was great, but I got burnt out really quick on motion controls? I have Nintendo 3DS I think that is amazing?? my favorite handheld might just be the PS Vita? It certainly did things that I loved...
Overall, I think it's been a good run and I wish Microsoft could've kept up the steam that they had with the Xbox 360 because they were dominating! if not for the red rings, that put a Hilt their steps, they might be on top today?
    Edit:

This is what you get when someone who isn't natively educated in videogames history, researched Wikipedia as a source, and uses blebs and numbers to craft a biased (inaccurate) narrative in 2024 about things that happened 20 and 30 years ago. 🤦‍♂️
I'm in my 40s and was there too. During much of the PS1 gen I was in HS and when N64 released I had a part-time job at Funcoland (a game store), a car and had spending money to buy games and sub to every magazine.
And in 2003, due to some unbelievable luck, I was employed at Ziff Davis as a very young contributing editor at EGN Magazine, Gamenow and later PTOM.. I was entrenched in the daily numbers and trends at that time.
In the West, no gaming companies had more money for advertising in the 90s and early 2000s than Nintendo - this angle simply doesn't work.
I remember that time well as a young man Both the N64 and GameCube were HUGE flops. And the only reason Wii surpassed PS3 and XB360 was the MASSIVE price gulf. It's not "strange". At launch people where wanting $600-$800 (in 2006 money) for the PS3, and XB360 was Red Ring of Deathing at that time like a mofo. Wii was half the price, cheaper games and cashing a trend of motion controls.
This video takes sales numbers and wraps it in a false narrative. I lost count how many things you just pulled outta ya butt. For example when you said Sony had no history in gaming prior to releasing PS1.
Sony produced gaming software in the late 80s, and were involved in producing Japanese gaming PCs and supporting Nintendo hardware development.
It also wasn't advertising that killed the dreamcast - it's initial launch was actually very successful! The console was safely already doomed (literally) before the first units shipped because Sega had run out of money to function. It was mismanagement and miscommunication in Sega US and Japan that had been systemic since the Sega Genesis 32X.
PlayStation had less to do with Dreamcasts demise, than events that snowballed when Sega Japan launched the Saturn early without telling Sega US just weeks after they launch their own attachment.
Sony dominated both those gens because Sega and Nintendo fundamentally made historically terrible decisions under bad management. Sony capitalized on superior product and Brilliant management from Ken Kutaragi!
And it wasn't even close! Most people had a PS1 or PS2.. N64 and GameCube were the "golden eye" and "Zelda" machines people with extra cash bought for themselves as a secondary platform, or for their kids.
This video is just SO FULL of inaccuracies. I could just go on and on...🤷‍♂️

And now both of them have just completely to the ground to a halt in the console space with the current generation. Nintendo had learned that lesson already. The ponies are BIG MAD over this video. My challenge to the ponies:
If you just disagree with the video, that's perfectly fine. If you believe the video is in error, make a video refuting the points I made in this presentation. No Ad hominem, no gaslighting, no deflections. Just a logical and factual refutation of the points made.

Sony forced Nintendo to go casual, Wii and even now Switch, I say that's dominate
2:40- Forgot the part where Square begged Nintendo to not go with cartages, Nintendo ignored them and Square just went with Sony. Yea I guess you do but frame it like Sony was in the wrong
5:50- yes selling at a lost was standard at the time... its well documented companies sold HW at a lost and made that back with software
8:40- Sega was already killing themselves, many failure systems and stupid CEO decisions. At best all you can argue is that Sony was the final nail of the coffin
10:10- Wii targeted grandmothers, I hardly say it won, I say 360 won they had the marketing. Sony forced Nintendo to go after another audience as a result of their domination.
12:03- you weren't singing that tone early in this video....
12:49- so competition got you.... admits Sega mess ups still blame Sony....
I'll end with this I can Nintendo dominating in the near future being the only company with exclusives

      @Manic_Panic 2 місяці тому +6

The same could be said about Nintendo lol.
They won the generation where Sony messed up with the PS3, they won the 3rd generation because SEGA and the others were barely trying and now they will win with the Switch because Sony has barely been feeding the PS5, it will be miracle if it surpasses the PS4 by the end of it.

@@Manic_Panic I find your lack of knowledge disturbing.
-The SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive was a powerhouse and released a few years earlier and yet, in the end, the SNES still managed to outsell in the end.
-The GameGear was a great handheld and sold well, but it's size, price and battery consumption made the GameBoy the clear winner in terms of numbers.
-The XBOX 360 had a year head start and was gaming powerhouse, the équivalent of the Genesis/Mega Drive for it's generation, but it still lost to the Wii.
-The PSP is probably the best non-Nintendo handheld ever, but it couldn't make a dent in the Nintendo DS' sales.
You need to understand the difference of winning because you're good and winning because the other ones suck. When Nintendo screw-up, they screw-up big, but when they have a winner on their hand, they win every time regardless how good the competition is.

@@Waifu4Life I find your pride and lack knowledge quite amusing. The SNES is the only good example on that list, though they have been a clear winner in the portable department, nothing to argue there but that was not even my argument.
7th gen: they won because the 360 went the titanic route (kinect) and the PS3 was still playing catch up after the horrible early years.
9th gen: PS5 and Xbox Series have no games, opening the high way for Nintendo to drive through.
You need to understand that your favorite corporation can take advantage of its rivals being down to win, just like all the others. There are exceptions like the SNES vs Genesis or PSP vs DS.

@@Manic_Panic I find your lack logic sad.
1- Handhelds are part of the video games history and marketing, regardless if it goes against your narrative.
2- For the XBOX 360, the fact that they brought out the Kinect is neither here or there. Someone buying the Kinect and hated it didn't magically remove a 360 sale nor would it have prevented someone who wanted one to buy one, it was an optional accessory at the end of the day. The Wii won because it was a more appealing console for everyone and had a solid game library.
3- SONY and Microsoft went the PC route for their consoles, meaning that it's a continuation of their previous gen where you can bring your entire game library with you and they'll run better. Their biggest mistake was allowing PS4 and XBOX One titles to be published for so damn long after their new system was out.
4- Jokes on you, I'm mainly a PC gamer nowadays, Steam Deck FTW!

      1. It's not "my narrative". It just wasn't in my argument since we were talking about home consoles (and generations) specifically. Regardless, the only "real" attempt to dethrone Nintendo in the portables section was with the PSP which didn't succeed and thus is in my exception list.
      2. Hahahaha... erm guys, Microsoft messed up but they didn't alright? Kinect didn't make the console magically worse, no no no... it's not like it got less games because of it or anything, it was still a good investment, trust me, the proof is that the PS3 surpassed them at the end lol.
      3. Why are you once again pretending they didn't mess up? Bringing their games to PC while Nintendo kept theirs is a huge failure and the reason the Switch keeps flying off the shelves. On top of it, their few releases are DEI infested and no one wants to buy them.
Nintendo succeeds from the failures of others, that's fine, they all do it. Why be so defensive about it?
