      Ahhhh the quintessential Neil Degrasse Tyson comment. I knew I'd find the resentment. It's on every comment section. Not "I want to go back to school because of Tyson". Rather "I would have done better in school because of Tyson" Appreciate the teachers you had, and find someone that inspires you to move forward, rather than resent the past. I suggest Elon Musk

Those people usually are never good at math. Cause they think knowing is smart and don’t want to be labels dumb so in reality they become dumb. People that are smart never know it all and always ask questions till they understand something. Those people are smart cause they go looking for the right answers and aren’t afraid to look dumb by asking a question.

      Yes, because we as humans have agreed on having calendars and have taken time zones into account, so what's the big deal ? A "year", "month", "minutes", "seconds" are all terms that are man-made. So hence to what we call a "year", it is ending or starting differently depending on which time zone (also man made) you're in.

      CJV842 That’s actually the flaw for someone like Dawkins. He speaks with a certainty, a kind of, this is 100% true as if there is no chance he could be wrong. The we don’t know what stuff we don’t know is a profound philosophical statement. We didn’t know about weather systems until we “discovered” them.
      It means that someone like Dawkins can say there is no god, but the truth is that no one can say with 100% certainty that there is or there isn’t
      So he can’t label you as deluded if you say there is because he can’t prove his point.
      Proper, honest scientists like Tyson will admit there is stuff we don’t know, and that we don’t realise we don’t know it.
      Others are just playing at science.

      @pixarboy02 6 років тому +22

      TheSquirrelyGhost If I remember it from English I think it’s an analogy for describing things you don’t know with things you do. I think there’s a story where three blind men find an elephant, and one touches its leg and thinks it’s a tree trunk, and the other touches it’s tail and thinks it’s a broom or something, and they all try to describe what the elephant is only using their past knowledge of what it feels like. Apparently in the story the men begin to fight over which person is right, and I guess the moral of the story is to understand that you may only have partial information, and to accept that others may be able to broaden your own partial knowledge with their partial knowledge.

    That's one of the greatest things i've ever heard Neil Degrasse Tyson say. I love thinking about the universe and theories on how it works. I've also thought there are many things we can't see beyond the observable universe, picturing something like Dr. Strange's multiple dimensions as an extreme example. We're so small, it's unlikely that everything we see, i.e galaxies, is all there is in the universe. I pictured it this way, it's very simple: asteroids revolve around planets, planets around stars, stars around black holes that form galaxies, and then what. What comes next... what are galaxies revolving around? There's a good chance every galaxy we see, the observable universe, is all but a small sliver of a bigger galaxy ring that revolves something... many many times more massive than black holes. And whatever that thing is must be what is the providing the majority of force, "gravity", that is missing from the equation of dark matter and energy. And I suspect it keeps going and going, more round things revolving around bigger round things. It might also make sense that we cannot see these massive objects, because they act much like black holes upon light. It's somewhat scary to think about, that everything in our observable universe is only but what our star is to the milk way. But I think it's very likely. When Neil says that astrophysicist don't know the source of gravity, that 80% of it is unaccounted for.. That's interesting to hear, because I was skeptical of celestial body cores being the only source of gravity too. The true universe is an infinite piece puzzle, and we're only 3 pieces in starting somewhere in the middle.

Two black holes collided and bent space 3mm. Black holes are not worm holes theyre just a lot of mass, infinitely compressed and if you went in one youd just die lol. And probably the proof of all this is that aliens have never visited us. So even if we somehow miraculously found alien life. Theres just no way to get there in a timely/efficient way. Im sure there are aliens out there that have existed long before us, are way smarter, way technologically advanced and guess what... they havnt made the trip. Or even found us. I love this guy. He makes me want to run out and buy a telescope because his enthusiasm for his field and science in general is infectious. I swear the government should create a new department just for him called "The Ministry of Mind Blowing Shit" and give him his own television station. It seems the interest in the physical sciences these days is lacking beyond what it takes to create a new social app.

      There are very good telescopes you can rent (or just join an astronomy club, hang out, and share with that one rich guy that just HAS to own the best haha), and go where there is minimal light "pollution". I like the Sierra's, and try Death Valley in California. Happy Stargazing!

      But other galaxies aren't accelerating away from us so fast that the next generation won't be able to see them.... it will be millions of years (and humanity will be long extinct) before the milky way is the only galaxy detectable from Earth. I don't know why he voiced this thought.

    • @batintheattic7293
      @batintheattic7293 6 років тому +4

      "No person will ever know everything." Ah, but Josh, this is what collective knowledge is for! We have to hope that our library burning days are over and then we can enjoy a kind of 'hive mind'. If the human race can survive our current tribulations - we are on the verge of an exponential explosion of comprehension. Just as the known universe is speeding up in it's expansion - so is our ability to find ways to understand the nature of existence.
      Which brings me to my criticism of what Neil deGrasse Tyson says is troubling him. When he says, "..beyond our horizon" is he talking about our observable range? If he is - then that's not set in stone. We've got ways of 'observing' things more distant than we would have ever thought possible fifty years ago. All we need to do is have our science keep pace with the rate of expansion.
      Josh, I agree that we will never know everything (singly or collectively). That's the nature of infinity. Yet, we will always have the opportunity to know 'more'. Isn't being a sophisticated life form, on a Goldilocks zone planet, wonderful?!!!

    • @XIII_Vanitas
      @XIII_Vanitas 6 років тому +23

      timbits187 That wasn't his point. He's saying that, just like eventually no other galaxy will be observable from Earth, maybe there was a point in time where an observer on Earth was able to gather more information about the universe that we can now. He's losing sleep over the fact that we'll never be able to know for sure whether there is any information that's forever lost to us.

      Probably it was such a long time ago that there was no life at all in this planet, I take maybe our solar system was being formed. Maybe it was then when there were alien life and there just wasn't anything to look for in this system. And as time passed and everything evolved into the present, the force of the dark energy incresased the entropy in our universe in such a way that by now, those civilizations were ripped apart from our glimpse of the observable universe. I bet that not only the light from those systems can reach our planet today, but most likely 5-6 billion years ago we could have detected E.T life/signals if we could have been there. I mean just apply what this astrophysicist said in this talkshow but implement it on the past and that might just explain the Fermi-paradox.

    I was thinking exactly same what he said, in-fact I can feel and think all his talks I have listened so far(not much) and those talks makes very much sense. And I got so much relived and kind of proud that I can grasp all those ideas and philosophy related to science easily by own. He is one of the few persons who can think all conclusions and possibilities philosophically very accurate(don't getting the word) about science or any other topic also. And almost all ideas and talks of him makes lot of sense and are very right.
