- In February, Russia captured the strategic town of Avdiivka, in the Donetsk region.
Since then, the invaders have advanced further west, and taken several villages.
Ukraine says its forces are "holding on". But Russian troops are now attacking in five areas along the 1,100km (700 mile) front line.
Over 1.2 million people - or two thirds of the population - have left the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk region since Russia's full scale invasion two years ago.

If you must know, 2 largest invasions occured on the west of russia most recent of which was thru hitler when the center force of invading nazi army penetrated kiev which was then part of soviet russia in order to enter moscow. long story short, majority of rusdia lives on the western side west of the ural mountains and hence nato expansion there is a big concern for russia than on the east, history has shown the enemies always invade the west of russias open flat plain, and that by having ukraine on natos side, it would undermine russias national security to the advantage of the west despite having no direct conflict with russia just because they like it. its good to remember that before the invasion, one standing diplomatic protest from russia is that they wanted ukraine to be not part of nato at the very least and the west decline to have such assurance and hence russia strike first. now if u ask, why would ukraines security be of an issue with russia?,ukraine is a sovereign nation indeed, but the outstanding conflict with the east of ukraine would then be up for interpretation by nato if ever ukraine suddenly got admitted to the bloc,in the end, you have a nato narrative of protecting ukraine and thereby russia could be at a larger war with nato than with just ukraine, all the western alliance have been taunting russia with aggressive actions and political movements in ukraine even before the crimean annexation began. 🤷♂️ I wouldnt even doubt that Russia just wants a neutral ukraine as a buffer state, but i doubt the west do indeed have the best intention at admitting ukraine as member of nato. 👌 at best, its more of a yet another proxy war to me to weaken russia by using ukranians a pawn in their greater narrarive of democracy and freedom which is great, but only if used properly and not in a deceitful or propaganda like way to strenthen the west war support narrative.
