  • These are the monster Challenger 2 tanks blasting the Russian invaders in Ukraine.
The Sun gained world-first access as crews unleashed the British-made tank’s devastating 120mm main gun.
Soldiers hailed the world-beating tank as a 64-ton “sniper” that regularly hits Russian targets up to 4.5km away - nearly three miles.
We joined the troops at a secret location close to the front line as they blasted shells down-range.
One tank fired on the move with its gun pointing sideways - destroying a target the size of a dinner plate from more than a mile away.
Green-tinged flames burst from the barrel as a visible blast-wave pulsed over the earth, lifting a veil of dust.

Getting stuck in mud has always been a problem with big heavy tanks! The trick is to avoid low lying areas which means you either know the ground ahead of you or you send out recon units first. This incident was an excellent training moment on how to get unstuck and why you don't send tanks out by themselves without back up.

You see the reeds beside the stuck tank? They’re indicative of a permanent wet patch, an area that a tank, any tank should avoid. That’s a crew failure not a vehicle issue.
The C2 was facing parts availability problems long before the tanks were gifted to Ukraine. With stored tanks being used as the only reliable source of specialty bits. The C2 is an old, end of life vehicle.

it's just tall grass, no one will look around if they are under fire, and visibility in the tank is limited, I think it was too heavy for this terrain, just like the German tigers during World War II, they had a problem with this land, when it was wet after the winter, and the fact that the C2 is old does not matter, much older tanks are fighting there

Even the Brits didn't have any real good use for this Challenger Behemoth. So that's why they got rid of them by donating them to the Ukrainians. Very generous of the Brits I'm sure but they are as obsolete as battleships. That's why the Ukrainian Army has focused on the Bradley, the "little old tank that could". The Ukrainians are not fighting the war as per "western tactics" because this war is very different from previous conflicts.

I'm not upset at the instructor firing an AK to simulate battlefield conditions, I get that. I can even understand using live ammo because if I remember correctly, I once heard that live ammo and blanks sound distinctively different from one another? Correct me if I'm wrong, please. But what is absolutely unacceptable is not only how close he was firing towards their heads, but what is severely egregious is the fact that he waved it around single handedly like that. I understand it's war time, but how do you explain accidentally executing 3 soldiers during training because you were sloppy and lost your footing?

50% of bridges in Ukraine are impassable for 50 ton vehicles. especially in rural areas. Western tanks spent more time breaking down on the road than fighting. this is the reason why the t64, t72 , t80 and t90 only weigh 38-46 tons. while challenge 2 weighs 75 tons.

For those saying it’s a bad tank, it’s to heavy, it’s underpowered, bla bla bla. No.
Challenger is a good tank. It just wasn’t build for heavy mud. There’s no tank in the world that’s immune to this issue. Russian tanks, German tanks and American tanks all have also faced this issue in the past.
Challenger was built in a different age for a different battlefield. She did well in the desert sands where she didn’t have to deal with mud. She does well on roads where she doesn’t have to worry about getting bogged down by terrain.
All tanks have weaknesses and strengths. Challenger is just in an area where its weaknesses show. There’s no such thing as an immortal tank. The only ones to claim so are the ones currently waging war against freedom.
Do yourselfs all a favor and those whi wish to be properly educated on tanks and armored warfare please visit the tank museum.

Before the ukrainian counteroffensive all western tanks where gamechangers!! But after meeting with the real world "western tanks are not build for bad road" and drive very good on paved road!! 🤣🤣
Maybe thats the reason when the leopards get destroyed the americans say that their tanks must not be used in "dangerous zones"!!!!
So maybe better keep all that heavy metal and send it by mail to the Crimean beach!! So you are sure it will arrived!!
Better stop this killing!! Or why you not let the people from crimea luhansk and donbass not voting for what they want!?
And if you really want the ukrainian governement wins, they have volunteer brigades!!! So buy a ticket and go look to this war!! I give you on a paper!! "One month and you are back home crying about nightmarries or dead"!!
Believe me the west is a joke!! Look around and tell me what you see!! We are less like one percent from what grandfathers fought in the same type of war 110 years ago!!
And thats exact the reason why the ukrainians fight to hard! Because the Russians and ukrainians they had the same "WAY OF LIFE"!!
And as a 52 years old belgium guy and married for years with my Russian wife, so yes, i understand little more their way of life!
We westners we must stop thinking other countries must live like we live!! It is their problem! And if we not sponsered this war it was over after max 2-3 months even after 14 days if Boris johnson not went to Turkey!
And yes!! ukraine get (back) a pro russia governement!! But now it is a pro western!! so maybe it was not so bad to split after 8 years fighting for donbass!!

I taught armor Cav and anti-tank systems in the US Army reserve my crews I taught all raw active-duty recruits never had a track thrown or break even with badly worn tracks as I taught them make small corrections to avoid mud build up, look for hard ground and small gaps in creek banks and use enough speed to get across in one go. All the other instructors had thrown or broken tracks from over aggressive movements. Dealing with it in training is good as it instills caution needed for combat.

In close range sure, but if a challenger is operated by a competent crew, they’ll never find themselves in range of enemy tanks and can pick them off from distance. Equally the challie can - and was proven to - survive a direct hit from a t-72. A tank is only as good as its crew.

It's a 60+ tonne machine! You can't expect to take it to the same places as old T72's which weigh half as much!

    • @stephenmuir5030
      @stephenmuir5030 2 місяці тому

Surely, the pressure the tank exerts on the ground matters more than the absolute weight of the tank? Pressure = Force (the "weight" of the tank) divided by track area in contact with the ground I've noticed Russian armoured vehicles tend to have quite narrow tracks, so, for an equivalent weight and assuming a similar length of track in contact with the ground, will exert more pressure and, therefore, sink deeper into mud. If, as you say, the T72 is half the weight, it probably exerts less pressure, so will have an advantage in deep mud.
The Scorpion light tank (I thought the UK had donated its entire stock to Ukraine?) is reputed to exert less ground pressure than a soldier. There are stories of soldiers jumping off Scorpions and sinking deep into mud the Scorpion itself drove straight over.

    • @_Pyrophoric_
      @_Pyrophoric_ 2 місяці тому +2

With the ground in question here, any tank would get stuck, including much lighter ones like T-72 etc. The reason is partly to do with ground pressure but mainly to do with the mud being extremely soft and, more importantly, deep enough to make the hull bottom out, regardless of the vehicle weight. Unless a tank is effectively on stilts, to the point that the hull doesn't bottom out before the ground becomes firm enough, it would get stuck there... I watched a T-84 in Poland litterally dissappear under water in a ditch after the chally went through it... why because the driver slowed down and didn't fully commit because of the depth of the mud and water... Training is key and thats the time to make mistakes and learn as to not repeat it again... 1st rule: Avoid ... 2nd rule: If you must then momentum is key, go hard or get stuck

the log is thrown under the tracks perpendicular to the movement of the tank in front or behind - depending on where it is more convenient to move - and secured with special cables. The car is started, the tracks climb onto the log and pull the armored vehicles out of the quagmire.
Already in World War II, Soviet troops used logs everywhere. They were secured with chains and carried with them always.
A tree trunk cleared of branches and attached to the tank body was called a “self-pulling log.” This device, ingenious in its simplicity, allowed the tank crew to quickly overcome impassable swamps,
