Escalator phenomenon at McCormick Place in Chicago during the 2012 Midwinter Meeting

- Two escalators go up, but for some reason nearly everyone takes the same one, leaving the second one empty. I'm sure there's an "official" psychological term for this crowding, but I just call it the "escalator phenomenon." This video was taken on the second day of the 2012 Midwinter Meeting, but I've been seeing the same thing happen since the event started. Video by Simon A. Thalmann.
This is an example of herd mentality, when people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items.
Like swarm theory :)
No, it's just more comfortable having a distance from the oncoming escalator.
Fucking idiot.
FreddoX1 really, do you think that beofre they went up the escalator they stop too think about that? OR they just followed natural human instincts?
@BoomerE30- that is right. it is more true about marketing and shopping. people buy some items just because others bought the same, regardless of thinking whether they really need it or not.
it gets worst if you come and visit far east countries. stereotypical behavior is first thing that may surprise you.
THANKS THERE
Well that escalated slowly.
not even at all
The two people who escalated in the middle are actually sociopaths.
Then what of the guy who took the stairs?
James Spicer A fitness expert!
There is no single black or jewish person in this video, this should make you think.
That's an insanely stupid claim to make. jewish people look white.
Also, that black women does seem to be single.
Yea, makes me think how fucking stupid you are
There are no dragons either. WERR MA DURGUNS?!
its2in0the1numbers1 it's ok little guy I'm sure someone will help you get back to the short bus
In such cases I'd take the empty one because I like my space.
I got stuck on a escalator, it was so scary :(
One of the best Films I've seen this year! Quality Documenting of this most bizarre phenomenon. It's worth noting that if I were at that mall, no doubt you would have seen me take the middle escalator. Most likely, this is because I'm a man likes to set himself apart from the pack; a Trailblazer, a Leader. I can understand that some of you may see this as a contrived effort but you'd be wrong. I just naturally seem to take the road less traveled, got a lifetime of unique experiences to prove it. Women love a unique man. Ciao.
Your fedora just said all that, didn't it?
Following the crowd, often stupid, but back when we were primitive, it was ingrained as a survival mechanism. If a bunch of people are going a certain way, it's been proven that that way is safe. Thus, the others instinctively follow the proven safe way. If something's being avoided, then maybe there's something wrong with it.
The more people you see avoiding something, the more you figure that must be the case.
Thinking for yourself is best, but instinctively most don't want to take chances.
The middle one is used by people who are alone, the right one is used by people who are with others. When I am talking to someone I don't pay that much of attention to how fast I'll be somewhere.
I've seen similar on the other side of town at Ogilvie Transportation Center. It seems like locals and regular commuters fall into patterns and tourists and out-of-towners timidly follow the crowds.
Number of hours Americans work compared to almost any other first world country except for Japan proves we're not lazy. Maybe "Sedentary" though.
I'm sure most of them don't even notice the middle one. They just see someone going up on the right one and stop looking after that.
Or could just be people who aren't in a hurry take the right escalator, leaving the middle one open for people who choose to walk up the moving escalator. That would be my thought if approaching either escalator.
I mean, I get that herd mentality might come into play a bit here, especially with that group at the very end, but to be fair, nearly everyone who got onto the escalator came from the right of the camera. They were just taking the closest option, which is logical since both go the same speed and by the time you took the steps and got onto the middle one, the right one would already be clear for you to step onto. Of course, there's also those that just took the stairs and those that took the middle escalator because they were empty so they could walk upwards at their own pace and/or be carried slightly faster than the right. It's not really a phenomenon, just coincidence.
Heavy machinary are threats, being in the middle escalator, being in between the other two machines, looks, and is, more dangerous.
Maybe they WANT to get on the crowded one so that they have an excuse to not walk up the escalator.
It's social conformity, look at all those chickens.. I mean sheep.

Is there a benefit to getting on an empty escalator? If you're just going to stand there and let it carry you to the top it wouldn't really matter if it was empty or not.
i know why. cause who the hell wants to ride the lonely escalator????
Most of the people going up are coming from the right, so it's simply the closest.
Did you even watch the video? thats not true at all
4 people come to it in a straight line and 7-8 come from the right side. Did you even watch the video?
Habits, to do with traffic like car lanes.
Baaaaaa! Humans like to follow the crowd, don't you know? :)
You just wasted 4 seconds of your life reading this comment
They are so racist to middle Escalator
Perhaps they're leaving the middle free one for those who are in a rush / want to walk up the escalator? That + herd mentality.
Stairs to the right
Nope I'm a fast reader. I only wasted 2.
Passive mob mentality?
Herd mentality. Usually doesn't hurt.
Right, I mean the people on the right
