That’s what I thought immediately after listening to this interview, and that’s exactly what’s missing from the albums that don’t have Phil Rudd. No one comes close to Rudd when it comes to how to make a rock beat swing and have an irresistable groove.
Slade had great swing when he was playing live with the band back in the early 90s. Not so much on his latter run with them, though. Maybe he wouldn't have got the gig again were Malcolm still at the helm.

Interesting definition of rock and roll. The name is used to describe everything from Bill Haley and his Comets, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, and Danny & the Juniors, through to AC/DC, Motorhead, and the Rolling Stones. There isn't a one size fits all definition. I even once heard McCartney refer to Wings as a "rock n roll band! However, I agree AC/DC are one of the greatest rock n roll bands. If you agree that "rock n roll" (rather than rock) applies to music after the golden era of the 1950s, then it includes Motorhead and Status Quo.
Lol look I love ac/dc and Malcolm is awesome. I agree with his overall point about ac/dc having a swing other bands lack and that they are more of a rock and roll band. But his two hi hat examples are just the same thing with different sound effects he was making. Feel free to tell me how ignorant I am and give your fake drum credentials.
well instead of trolling, try this: listen to any AC/DC song, live preferrably, then look up someone coverring it, or a tribute band. typically, they can play half-decent, but the drummer just plays 4/4 and thinks he's doing it
@@ImperialRadioYT I don't see how you think that's a troll considering I admitted that I think AC/DC has a certain swing to them and a rock and roll feeling that other bands lack. All I'm saying is that hi-hat rhythm he was doing is exactly the same both times he did it, he just did different sound effects for it. I agree with his overall point, just not with the way he explained it. Why don't you just stop meat riding?
Malcolm was the man! My interpretation of what he's saying is that you could drop Chuck Berry into either of Rolling Stones or AC/DC, and he'd know exactly what to play, but if you plopped him into a typical AOR / Metal band etc, he would feel like a fish out of water.
He’s not wrong. In fact he’s exactly correct. Which is why Steven Tyler needs to be taped to a chair to watch this over and over until he repents . Because in inducting AC/DC into the rock and roll hall of fame, called them ( and Back in Black) “ Heavy Metal”. 😬🙄
Malcolm and Angus, they've worked hard to learn what they're most knowledgeable of since they were kids. They use no effects pedals, their sound is strictly from what they know what works, and how far from being abusive to push it's limit!
You always knew/know what you are getting with AC/DC. They never tried to sneak a ballad in on you or write and play songs for a more diverse fan base and radio play. It was never wavering straight and pure high octane blistering Rock & Roll. A good example is say when someone has a radio station or is playing music in a store, restaurant or other public place. It has cringe worthy music playing song after song until a AC/DC song would come on. Another one would be Huey Lewis & The News. They just perk you up and get you going. IMO "cringe worthy" would be at least 75% of modern "sad cry in your beer" Country music, Hip Hop, Rap and Dubstep. Makes you long for the intro to The Rolling Stones "Satisfaction" or The Who "Can't Explain". Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" or ZZ Top "Tush". I can't tolerate subpar bad music and poor taste.
I could listen to AC/DC all day long regardless if it is music or listening to them talk, the crew of AC/DC has some of the finest voices in the world. Everyone knows that AC/DC is the best band in the world whether he or she likes it or not!
I love AC/DC, and he's right to identify swing as the most clear stylistic distinction between what was originally called "Rock 'n' Roll" and what later came to be called "rock music", but if there's one thing I DON'T associate with AC/DC, it's swing. Seriously, which famous AC/DC songs swing? Their whole thing is straight ahead 4/4 rock. That's what people love about it.
Is there really a difference? It started out with blues rock that basically all sounded the same.. and then to evolve into a more progressive style when bands like The Kinks, Beatles, Stones, The Who etc came along and advanced from E-A-H. I really don`t see anything else than a genre that evolved in the 60s and became a different beast than the polished, simple songs. If the bands in the 60s didn`t experiment with the genre, rock and roll would have died off anyway, as there was very much a conservative music genre that didn`t progress much.
One of the best rhythm guitarist on the planet right there. Humble, simple but straightforward in your face with his amazing tempo.
I agree. He's very humble but was as important as Angus in the AC/DC trademark
The man’s a legend, but he wasn’t exactly being humble in this clip.
You couldn't be more incorrect. The band called him "Riff Master" because he created most of those iconic AC/DC hit song guitar riffs.
This man was a genius - one of my favorite guitarists.
That is indeed the perfect way to describe the difference. The swing.
Also AC/DC understand when not to play. Giving it space. Back in black a great example. Subtle but very effective
