  • Malcolm Young wasn't just one of the founding members of the legendary rock band AC/DC, he was also the band's leader. From their earliest days as a small Australian cult band with lead singer Bon Scott, to their time as the biggest, baddest, and loudest rock band in the world with lead singer Brian Johnson, Malcolm Young was behind the scenes directing it all, while also playing rhythm guitar alongside his brother, lead guitarist Angus Young.
    Tragically, though, Malcolm Young passed away in 2017 from dementia at the age of 64. But the mastermind behind music like "Back in Black" and "Thunderstruck" left an unmatched legacy. Here's a look at what the last 12 months of Malcolm Young's life were like.

    I always loved Malcolm because he was the silent genius behind AC/DC. He never demanded the spotlight but his signature gyration always made him stand out in his own way. I miss that guy.

      Me too, I also loved Mal. There were so many things I loved about AC/DC. The Young Boys were mega stars, even surpassing Jagger and Richard's. Nevertheless, they never lost that "hey, we're your buddies from next door attitude."

    I've been a hardcore AC/DC fan since I was 11 years old (now 46) From going to the first show Monsters of Rock (Gentofte '91) Dressed in my homemade (mom-made) schoolboy uniform. To the point of having a huge tattoo of their logo on my underarm. AC/DC has been in my life for so long and mean the world to me. The loss of Malcolm was hard, even more so as he died on my birthday. So needless to say, that day is not so happy for me anymore. Thank you so much for it all Malcolm and especially for "Down Payment Blues" 😢

    The men of AC/DC are all brothers to me. They are my family. I know that sounds stupid but I don't care. We have laughed and loved and raised hell together, through their music, for almost five decades now and they just keep coming with the magic. Thank you, my brothers, here and gone, but never forgotten. For those about to rock, we appreciate you. AC/DC Forever.

    Without the Easybeats, there would never have been The Beast, Malcolm's favorite guitar. The instrument was given to Malcolm by Harry Vanda, George Young's bandmate and co-producer. It was originally finished in red (briefly seen in this video), but Malcolm never left the guitar alone and was always modifying it. The guitar is a Gretsch Jet Firebird, and Gretsch made (and may still make) a Malcolm Young Signature Edition. It features the same bare wood finish, and was the first guitar Gretsch made without paint or stain. This guitar, along with Lemmy's personal Rickenbacker 4004LK, is my favorite instrument.

    • @catjudo1
      @catjudo1 2 роки тому +1

      @Sasha Taylor Interesting. I've read multiple sources, including on Gretsch's own site (detailing the Malcolm Young Signature Jet Firebird) that they had never released a natural wood finish prior to the MY Signature. I'll have to look at some Easybeats vids to see though. Whatever the color was, that was a damn fine guitar stock or when Malcolm made it his own. Thanks for sharing!

    • @corneliuscrewe677
      @corneliuscrewe677 2 роки тому +2

      @Sasha Taylor That is not correct. The Beast and many Gretsch guitars at the time had a colored laminate covering glued to the top very similar to what they used on their drums. The Beast’s started peeling off, and Malcolm took it off and cleaned the glue residue off. It started life with it’s red laminate finish.
      The first run of the Malcolm Young model had a red painted option.

    I think the close relationship they had was great. Makes me feel good to see that it really isn't that hard either! I say that because I grew up watching my brothers do nothing but fight. There's not even any family pictures of us that exist past our teens. That was the one thing that broke my dad's heart. Which is why I was closer to him than any. If it werent for him exposing me to music. I wouldn't have became a musician. I'm 51 and still going.

    I think we all miss Axl singing on the Rock or Bust tour.
    But... he went on to sing for the Village People on their tour. So there's that.

      I agree with you. I saw AC/DC 9 times and the rhythm section is my favourite to watch during the concert. When the three of them Mal, Cliff and Phil are locked in the pocket there is nothing better for the ears than that.

    You know you've pretty much hit the end of the road when most of the band is having these kind of issues...it's not an insult, it's just reality & mortality hitting the equilibrium point.

    When Bon died, AC/DC was really in stride. Malcom and Angus had long been creating riffs, of pure human, instict. That's rock n roll. Playing music that touches something primal in our species. The Stones, have done so time and time again. I get the impression Keef is in tune with what Malcom and Angus had tapped into. Mick, not-so-much, Bon was lyrically and rhythmically, in tune to that primal energy.
    Brian nailed it on BIB, conspiracies aside, we can all agree, that if Bon didn't write those lyrics, Malcom, knew how to get Brian i to that space. Geordie, is nothing like AC/DC. And Can I sit Next to You Girl is fully penned by Malcom. Bon, was nothing if not deeply in tune with groove. Nothing in AC/DC's worl woukd've happened period, if Malcom wasn't there behind the scenes, giving a nod of approval. Make no mistake, I'm a career musician, every band has that guy, not always the flashiest, or most interested in being the focual point. Mal om, was a genius. AC/DC was his vision. It suffered greatly, toward his end, to some degree. Producers, room for other members, and the last success, of HTH, and BIB, along with the entire Bon catalogue, male it understandable. Everyone at some point needs air from tgeir maniacal, obsessiin. Obsesssion is what it tkaes. Unflinching, vision, and self belief. Often mistaken for arrogance. Malcom, was, and remains, a life role madel to me.
