He's also a sell-out shill for the fake space program.
He flipped completely on the fake moon landing as he got super famous, now won't even speak of it, same way Alex Jones won't even talk about the towers now. and Joe never asks Neil ass tyson any real questions, plus admitted on video he would be a sell-out if they paid him enough. And back then, all the *real* lame-asses were doing the opposite -- only bothering to do all the hard work involved in standup in hopes of being spotted and snagging that big money sitcom gig.
I worked with Bill Hicks' Sacred Cow Prods and then with Joe when he came to SCP to produce his first standup DVD. He's no Hicks, but he is himself which is central to being a good standup. I honestly haven't seen his standup of the last decade, but I always thought he was pretty solid and certainly never saw any fatal flaw in his comedy presentation.

People are either born funny or they're not. Joe was born a super serious, driven person. Funny people aren't like that at all. Funny people don't take life too seriously and they have a specific look about them. For an example jim carry and dave chappelle were born funny. Dave chappelle and Jim carry are naturally funny even off stage but Joe isn't like that. How Joe got the idea in his head that he is funny is beyond me. He built the greatest podcast in history so he has my respect in that regard but he sucks at being funny. That's my opinion..

BTW. Logic is the foundation of joke writing. Even a silly or goofy observation must be structured using solid internal logic. Theo's a perfect example. It’s not about Rogan missing the joke, it’s about another comedian taking the shine away from Joe. You can tell that’s what’s going on there. He likes to subtly assert his dominance by shutting down their momentum. If you look at it from a psychological perspective, it seems like an ego thing. Seems like short man syndrome manifest.

Like other people have said - it's the fact that he preaches about comedy all the time and talks about it as though he is the king of comedy, that’s what makes it embarrassing.

Rogan is the definition of a dullard. As you pointed out, he doesn't seem to get jokes or be particularly well-versed on any topic besides combat sports. He has interesting guests, but his contributions to discussions are usually saying "no way", "wow", or "craaazy" and cutting off guests before they get to the meat of whatever story they're telling. I actually dread when there's a guest on whom I really want to see, because there's a good chance Rogan won't ask the right questions or let the guest talk.

From there I started watching his podcast 10 years ago and really liked it and it has gotten better. So of course I wanted to watch his comedy since Joe is always talking about his comedy craft. Joe's stand up is awful. Joe isn't a funny guy. I rarely laugh at anything he says when he is trying to be funny on the podcast. I found it funny when Louis CK stand up he was working on got leaked and Joe said it wasn't bad but that CK was still working on it. That clip of CK's raw comedy bit that CK was still working on was funnier than Joe's entire body of work as a stand up comedian.

His sense of humor and joke style is high school cafeteria level and the type of sense of humor teenage boys would have. It’s not professional comedian level like Ricky Gervais or Richard Pryor and it’s awkward to see a middle aged man making and enjoying such immature jokes…

Could not possibly agree more. He's great at a lot of things, but how he started out and remained in comedy is completely beyond me. And what is with the oversized dress shirts? The man can afford to have his shirts tailored to the length of the average 8 year olds shit. He can afford it and he should do it because the shirts may be the funniest thing about his stand up.

I'm not American so have less knowledge of American comedians but I'd never heard of Rogan before he made it as a podcaster. American stand-ups, to us, are/were (I'm 46 so missed most before the '90s) Pryor, Carlin, Steve Martin, Larry David, Seinfeld, Williams, Poundstone, Roseanne, Steven Wright, Ellen, Murphy, Chapelle, Stanhope, Burr, Louis CK, Leno, Dice Clay, Norm, L Anderson, Hicks, Kinison, Dangerfield and maybe some others. I don't like all of them (Seinfeld, Dice Clay, Ellen, Leno) but in terms of recognition they were known to me. Rogan never entered my consciousness until the podcasts came along. I don't think of him as a stand up although I'm aware he did it.

Rogan is good at interviewing because he has a curious mind and has a genuine interest on the subjects at hand. Never liked his stand up, it is very basic low grade humour. All of his close friends are just as bad or worse. Everyone worships him because of his influence and they use his podcast to sell themselves.

as someone who's a huge fan of his podcast, and has been a longtime fan of him as a UFC announcer, joes comedy is objectively terrible. i think the issue is how much sway he has in the podcast space and the influence that podcasting as whole has on the current comedy scene. comedians know he isn't funny, but they all have to maintain relationships with him, and he gets booked for shows because of how beneficial it is to align yourself with him. i also notice how he misses comedic bits or just flat out ignores jokes like you mentioned, the thing is i think a lot of the time he's aware of the joke being made but doesn't have the comedic chops to lean into it, so he defaults to trying to pivot to having a serious fact sharing conversation instead.

Oh yeah completely. I can honestly say that I’ve never laughed at his comedy and often cringe which is a feeling I hate. He does have a decent podcast and he pretty much invented the format and he can take a joke and when he laughs it’s cool to watch. Also I really respected the defense of free speech in the beginning but now I find this current martyrdom against cancel culture played out and really fucking annoying.
