It's stunning how far being humble and self deprecating can go. If Brendan was just as atrocious of a comedian as he is now, but he was humble about it and went along with the joke of how terrible he is, laughed about it and didn't take it serious, I bet he could have a real fanbase. Lots of times personality is just as important, or even more important than the actual content that someone makes. Not taking yourself too seriously is one of the most attractive traits to basically everyone.

I used to think Brendan wasn't truly committed to comedy, like his heart wasn't truly in it... But, in order to get stage time, the guy said he is willing to scrub the floor for FIVE whole minutes. Nobody in comedy is as committed to the art as Brendan is.
He would scrub it in exchange for 5 mins on stage. I believe he works hard but the fact that he thinks hes good just shows he lacks the ability to actually become good. A normal person would realise how unfunny they are and openly express it.
Charlie is a great example for comedians starting off. Everyone knew Charlie was funny. He was great in Chappelle, acting wise, writing skits, telling stories. But he wasnt a stand up. I wasnt aware of that. Youd assume from Chappelle show he was. And when he started, he struggled, but he got better, and found his way.
I give Joe a lot of respect for that statement “I talked you out of fighting and I couldn’t talk you out of taping that first special.” That’s exactly what I was thinking why Joe didn’t tell him to not tape it.

If you’re going to mock and critique society as a comic, you have to be willing to mock yourself. Personally every comic can’t be great, but between being a habitual liar, and the kind of friend that would sleep with your girlfriend, he’s got no character left to stand on.
Also, if you got bullied or picked own as a young person, sometimes the only thing that will make it stop is owning it. When people begin to laugh at you over whatever, it can be a good defense mechanism to just go with it. Be even harsher in yourself than they are. They lose all power over you, in that context.
Then there is the east coast guys who pile on each other and not themselves....makes them x10 funnier. NY scene > Cali scene and it's not even close. The west coast guys are decent on podcasts and shooting the sh*t in a room, but they are all trash as comedians. Rogan, Bobby Lee, Theo Von, Callen, Chris, ect ect....all terrible at stand-up.
You're exactly right and that's exactly why Schaub is on his last leg with EVERYTHING. I think a comedy special has changed over the years from a milestone of accomplishment and recognition as a seasoned comedian that is offered after proven success to something you can do on your own as a representation of your current work and style to help promote your existence as an artist, much like an independent band’s first demo or extended play. The growth of an artist doesn’t have to go undocumented.
That's why I only watch the biggest ones Chapelle, Ricky Gervais, Bill Burr. I found Kevin Hart funny too but his comedy is really for the masses and to cinema, doesn't really have a message.

Of course. Look at the people who Joe can surround himself with now, super successful and intelligent. Having people like Bert, Joey, Redban, Callen, Brendan etc might be funny for one of nights but he can do that when he sees them at comedy night, you don't want to spend major tome with them if you want to continue to progress like he seems to want to. Also the allegations towards Callen, his "best friend" at a time when Joe was getting the Spotify deal is bad timing and people would begin to ask questions. I think a comedy special has changed over the years from a milestone of accomplishment and recognition as a seasoned comedian that is offered after proven success to something you can do on your own as a representation of your current work and style to help promote your existence as an artist, much like an independent band’s first demo or extended play. The growth of an artist doesn’t have to go undocumented.

Of course. Look at the people who Joe can surround himself with now, super successful and intelligent. Having people like Bert, Joey, Redban, Callen, Brendan etc might be funny for one of nights but he can do that when he sees them at comedy night, you don't want to spend major tome with them if you want to continue to progress like he seems to want to.
Also the allegations towards Callen, his "best friend" at a time when Joe was getting the Spotify deal is bad timing and people would begin to ask questions. It would surprise me if he outright told them he needs to distance himself due to that and they would have to respect it. When in reality it was part of the reason the wanted to distance himself, the other being those guys are a bunch of idiots and if Joe wants to be taken seriously by some of the people he is beginning to hang around with, you cannot have Joey, Bert and Brendan at the table too.
