It's stunning how far being humble and self deprecating can go. If Brendan was just as atrocious of a comedian as he is now, but he was humble about it and went along with the joke of how terrible he is, laughed about it and didn't take it serious, I bet he could have a real fanbase. Lots of times personality is just as important, or even more important than the actual content that someone makes. In my experience nearly all comics are self deprecating and when they’re directly mocked, they pile on at their own expense, with the exception of hecklers. In the simplest of terms, it’s called having a sense of humor. That is a key ingredient in the formula for comedy. If you’re going to mock and critique society as a comic, you have to be willing to mock yourself. Personally every comic can’t be great, but between being a habitual liar, and the kind of friend that would sleep with your girlfriend, he’s got no character left to stand on.
Also, if you got bullied or picked own as a young person, sometimes the only thing that will make it stop is owning it. When people begin to laugh at you over whatever, it can be a good defense mechanism to just go with it. Be even harsher in yourself than they are. They lose all power over you, in that context.
Then there is the east coast guys who pile on each other and not themselves....makes them x10 funnier. NY scene > Cali scene and it's not even close. The west coast guys are decent on podcasts and shooting the sh*t in a room, but they are all trash as comedians. Rogan, Bobby Lee, Theo Von, Callen, Chris, ect ect....all terrible at stand-up.
Charlie is a great example for comedians starting off. Everyone knew Charlie was funny. He was great in Chappelle, acting wise, writing skits, telling stories. But he wasnt a stand up. I wasnt aware of that. Youd assume from Chappelle show he was. And when he started, he struggled, but he got better, and found his way.
I used to think Brendan wasn't truly committed to comedy, like his heart wasn't truly in it... But, in order to get stage time, the guy said he is willing to scrub the floor for FIVE whole minutes. Nobody in comedy is as committed to the art as Brendan is.
He would scrub it in exchange for 5 mins on stage. I believe he works hard but the fact that he thinks hes good just shows he lacks the ability to actually become good. A normal person would realise how unfunny they are and openly express it.

You're exactly right and that's exactly why Schaub is on his last leg with EVERYTHING. I think a comedy special has changed over the years from a milestone of accomplishment and recognition as a seasoned comedian that is offered after proven success to something you can do on your own as a representation of your current work and style to help promote your existence as an artist, much like an independent band’s first demo or extended play. The growth of an artist doesn’t have to go undocumented.
That's why I only watch the biggest ones Chapelle, Ricky Gervais, Bill Burr. I found Kevin Hart funny too but his comedy is really for the masses and to cinema, doesn't really have a message.

You're exactly right and that's exactly why Schaub is on his last leg with EVERYTHING. He's had a harder road than most because it's obvious to everybody that Schaub is a product made by Joe rogan and because of that, he SHOULD BE THAT MUCH BETTER than other comedians to make up for that fact and the truth is, Schaub just isn't good...at any of this. He's got maybe a year before it all comes crashing down in my honest opinion. He's just not a likeable guy at the end of the day and it was different years ago when he was playing the gentle giant on tfatk with callen and being self depreciating, but not he's acting like a big shot and having his own "studio". He's just gotten too big for his britches and people are about done with him and his ticket sales are showing that.

Joe has distanced himself from Brendan manly b/c he lives in Texas now, Brendan did so many earlier Rogan podcasts b/c they literally lived in the same city. Don’t get me wrong Schaub is not a good comedian and is annoying at times, but Joe genuinely likes him for the most part.
I think a comedy special has changed over the years from a milestone of accomplishment and recognition as a seasoned comedian that is offered after proven success to something you can do on your own as a representation of your current work and style to help promote your existence as an artist, much like an independent band’s first demo or extended play. The growth of an artist doesn’t have to go undocumented.

I think in Joe's mind, being a stand up comic takes 10+ plus years to be considered average. Joe secretly knows brendan needs improvements, but it's part of the process
