- Every now and then you got to do a little generator maintenance. when you change the oil it doesn't take long to just look at the air filter, spark plug and even take a peek at the carburetor. You can do all this while the oil is draining. kind of multitasking. lol

I created this video with the UA-cam Video Editor ( / editor
This is one of the best videos I have seen for any kind of instruction! You do an amazing job of explaining and showing every detail. Great camera work. Thank you
Your video is still helping people. Helped me today! My ten year old Champion would not start yesterday. I have not started it in two years. After viewing your video, I took the carburetor apart and it looked terrible. I always drain the tank but had not drained the carburetor bowl. After cleaning (with Gumout)and blowing out with compressed air, I put everything back together. I also changed the spark plug which was fouled. After three pulls, it started and stayed running for ten minutes when I shut it down. I'm ready for the next storm which we get plenty of this time of year. Thank you much!
sweet. gas is so useful but just clogs everything up too. lol
go get some tru fuel or go to the local airport and ask if you can get some non ethanol fuel before you store it for the season let it run for 30 min with the non ethanol fuel
I just did exactly what you explained from the video and guest what... I got it ran after 3 hrs. working on my generator.... finally after 9 years sat in my garage. Thank you so much.
lol saved you from buying another generator or paying someone to fix it. . nice.
@@ArizonaHotHomestead where is the oil sensor on that model
@@joed8842 got me. no idea.
@@joed8842 no idea. maybe somewhere inside with the oil.
Stumbled on in researching tomorrow’s spark plug project. And if I can keep from losing everything and take lots of pics, I just might check out my air filter and carb while I’m at it, lol. I used this video for my first ever oil change last maintenance, thanks so much for this confidence boosting video, glad I found it again!
awesome.
Thank you so much for making this. I never disassembled a carburetor before, but following your directions I did so, cleaned out the crud, re-assembled it without parts left over, and she turned over just fine.
sweet.
Thank you for this! I was overwhelmed this morning when my generator was sputtering. I will do the maintenance and watch your video again step by step.
glad it was helpful.
This is absolutely the best detailed information on how to maintain not only this generator but generators in all... I really messed up my last generator cleaning the carburetor watching UA-cam videos that not one single one went over the importance of the Governor spring and rod.. also mentioning of taking pictures prior to disassembling is a key point!!
glad it was helpful. have a great day
Finally a video that actually shows what to do instead of 20 minutes of talking. Thanks for the video. I have a Champion generator that just decided not to start. Will be cleaning it next weekend. I live in NY and it's been cold. Luckily I haven't needed the generator in awhile, but my bad for not cleaning it before storing. Thanks for the information.
you are welcome. stay warm.
It's easier to drain the oil completely if you warm up the genny, remove the dipstick, and then drain the oil. It allows air into the crankcase to assist in the oil removal. Thanks for the video.
thanks. never thought of that.
Great instructional - brought it into a well-known business and they said they don't really service Champion generators, as parts come from overseas and that their last customer with the exact same generator was disappointed by the bill she was given after they serviced her generator. Thank you for your video.
you are welcome. i found out the oil sensor has a tendency stick so from time to time you might need to reset. all you have to do is the wire connecting it just disconnect it and start the generator, let it run for a few minutes. reconnect the sensor . done.
My gen could not start, suspected d spark plug but didn't know how to remove it until I checked ur video. I just cleaned it wit a screw.. Started working immediately.. Thanks
thats super cool. nice. glad the video helped you out.
2024 found an old champion in the trash, used this as my guide it’s running now. Spent 20 bucks for parts. Side note you may also have a bad oil sensor. You can unplug it to test but make sure it has oil.
nicely done. glad the video was helpful. i will have to look into the oil sensor. have a great day
I'm in the middle of changing the oil and checking the plug on my machine for the first time (to use for my cotton candy machine for 4th ot July fireworks) . Thank you immensly for posting this. It seems to get choked off when I slide the lever to run, and I have to keep it on choke for it to run. I think I'm going to have to call the company. Mine came with a remote starter, which is kind of nice, except it only works sometimes. Now if only I could find a safe way to put a box over the generator to make it quieter. It's pretty quiet, but when you're at the beach, fairly quiet isn't always good enough
nice. i wonder if the choke needs to be adjusted some have little screw adjustments, some the spring breaks, others i dont know. lol. good luck with a to make it quiet. on the beach you want the people noise to draw into you not annoying generator . lol
Thanks for a great video. I decided to put a new carburetor on my Champion 3500 generator just like yours. It was running rough and the carb bowl had been etched by the alcohol in the gas. Carbs for the generators are on Amazon and Ebay for around $12 shipped. Just be sure to order the right one as they came with a couple of different carbs on the same model number. Anyway you helped to make the carb change a 15 minute job, it now purrs like a kitten. Thanks.
nicely done. glad the vid was helpful.
Very easy to operate, started on the first pull.Only wish a wheel kit was available as an option to add with this model choice. But, not a deal breaker as you can see with this improvised addition.
sweet. i like mine. in fact i did upgrade mine to a dual fuel. i like the idea of using either fuels.
Great video, well explained even for someone that might have no clue what so ever!
thanks. have a great day
You're SO appreciated right now. Thanks for showing each step, and explaining things as uou go. I get so frustrated with videos ,often from the manufacturer, that seem to assume we know it all already! If we did ,wouldn't need the instruction, right? Thanks again!
your welcome.
You did an amazing job making this easy for a non knowing person like myself. That had no idea how to get my generator back up and going. Tks
thanks. just started looking at it. i have rebuilt an old Nissan engine before so i guess i knew the basics.
Yup, a good generator. Fixt the exact same one 4 a lady friend, biggest issue is leaving gas on
after use. gr8 idea about taking pics. I've worked on a few Briggs that have more linkages an
springs than the space shuttle!.
thanks. you are a good person helping out others. nicely done.
@@ArizonaHotHomestead Ur very welcome, I do run a business, but I have
gotten some good help on the net, so if i can help others, that works. just got
a 9HP cast iron Briggs &Stratton going, should be good for 4500 watts.
I have had excellent results with champion, PowerHorse and Briggs& TroyBilt.
ur Champion puts out 7.5 volts or so from the avr that half-moon shaped
thing, may have ribs and be silver or just black. that 7.5 volts is D.C. I have not done this yet but I think if I put a 6 volt tail- lite lamp in series with the brushes, keeping the + on the + brushholder, and a 12 volt battery that could work, just
in case the avr died and you needed power. I gave this thought as Mr. Murphy
and his law of stuff dying at the wrong time came to mind. Keep that air filter clean. it DOES matter. Got a 91Harley Sporty 1200 could not get over 85, even
w good compression. cleaned air filter, got speed up to a 110 mph. So I know
a properly serviced filter is as important as everything else, it all works
together. always keep extra oil plugs and at least an extra air filter in stock if
u run a few days at a time. seafoam is good for the gas and always let engine
cool down and then shut off gas and let engine run out or let cool and with
the gas OFF drain carb. good luck!
i have a firman fpg 3800 and it is so much like this champion in almost all the details
thank you so much for this useful video
sweet. glad it was helpful. have a great day
Having trouble starting this same generator. This video went over everything clearly, sounded great, and in great detail. Thank you for your efforts!
you are welcome. hope you are able to get the generator started.
I got that sucker running in 5 mins bro! Stupid oil was low...I'm such a moron...but now I know!
There is a jet under the black plastic screw at the top of the carburetor. You take the screw out and then lift the jet out from the top. Many people don't know its there. Honestly, Champion and others sell replacement carburetors for as little as $12-15. I just replace them when they are that cheap.
lol but its more fun to tear it apart and try to put it back together to see if it works. lol. but i guess replacing the carb you still have to tear some of it apart. lol..... thanks for the input.
absolutely the easiest and most user friendly video of its sort. thank you Jeff, you really made a good one! Thank you.
thank you. i do try to makes things simple for others. lol and myself.
Thanks for the clear, no BS video. I'm having to service the low oil plug on this particular model. Have you done a video for that?
have not. i do understand the low oil sensor sticks a lot. i think you can reset it by disconnecting it, starting the gen for a few minutes then connect it again.
Your generator is exactly the same one I have. My problem is that mine had no wheel kit. Which I recently had to get one from champion for this generator which is obsolete since generator is the older one. For which it had to have a rod for the wheels. Now after everything is installed along with the front bumpers it is lower in the front. Do you have any suggestions.
A piece of wire from ten gage stranded copper is great for running thru the holes in the jet or emulsion tube.
good idea.
Appreciate the video. We were just given one of these generators for the right price.... free :) nice to have an idea what to do with thei thing. All I’ve done so far is drain the old gas.
i like free.
Great, simple, easy to follow, step by step instructional video. Thanks
gee thanks. have a great day
thanks for the imfo hopefully i will give my generator a tune up and it will run again
get it ready for the long winter nights.
im just not a great mechanic.. but i am a licensed pilot :o there are things we are good at, and things we are not.. thanks a lot for the video! i have the same generator with only a few hours on it.. this is good to know! ill watch this video again as im doing maintenance.
awesome. glad the video will be helpful.
Good stuff-very good instruction. One question: how did you clean the spark arrester?
air hose and brush and knock it on the table. lol...
Awsome it's just what I been wondering about and you made it very easy to understand. Just 1 question. Mine had a fuel filter on it a and yours didn't. Do I have to have one on mine?
i am sure mine doesnt have a fuel filter becus its a cheap one. i would assume a fuel filter would be helpful
Thanks a lot! I just got a generator for my home and this was a handy tutorial!
sweet. just remember maintenance is important but easy to forget.
Thanks for the great video. I have one of these units that was just used for the first time. I needed to know how to change the oil after the 5 hour break in period. I'm not great mechanically but this looks simple enough.
hope this vid helped. it is simple.
.The instructions don't tell you to set it on blocks. Try using an aluminum pie plate or even a couple Styrofoam meat trays, I find tipping is important for draining and for filling otherwise you take a long time for the oil to dribble out and in and have it at the top. These engines are a joke.
Very informative video......just picked one up from a friend for 100 dollars... only used one time...but has bad gas in it....going to do all the things you did.. ..thanks for the information
awesome deal.
You missed cleaning the pilot jet on the outside and top of the carb, and cleaning the float needle and seal inside but above the float.
i may have just looked through them. if not oops.
You commented exactly what I was going to comment...Just as important as anything else!!!
I think that's what the Carb cleaner is for
Everyone really needs to watch this video about generator safety ua-cam.com/video/I1jT3ANENvI/v-deo.html you all should agree with this. I’m not trying to force everyone to watch this video. Generator Safety is just important for everyone who use portable generators. Hope you all agree with this. Thank you.
great video, thank you so much for making it! i have a different champion generator (1500 watt) but the maintenance process seems pretty similar.
i bet your right there shouldnt be much difference. maybe the capacity of oil and the exact spark plug. you are welcome i am glad you like the video
I had a Champion 400 /3500 watt generator. it started first or second pull, EVERYTIME. I sold it cause I didn't like keep gas in my garage. I bought two champion 2500 dial fuel and a parallel kit. now I have 4 propane tanks instead of gas.
i like propane so much better than gas. the best part is the fuel doesnt go bad and i can use a larger propane tank if i need longer use.
My PowerIt brand looks identical and the oil fill is not complicated..full is at the top of the stick, soooooooooo, fill til it flows out the hole, simple!.. good vid
thanks. amazing how lots of generators look the exact same maybe they are just different labeling. lol
Overall, good tips here ArizonaHotHemestead... You did mention tipping the unit to the side at the beginning of the video to drain any excess old oil out, but not sure if you actually did do that, in either case, it would be wise to remove the blocks beneath the unit 1st! Personally, I would use a automotive spark plug socket, 3/8" drive with the appropriate ext. Towards the end of the video, I see you did have some Gumout spray carb cleaner on hand. Before removing the carb & choke lever, I would cover the throttle opening [ butterfly ] with a clean rag, spray the dirt debris off it's exterior, now remove it. Since it is now in your hand, I would spray the throttle body as well as the main jet in your hand. This cuts that clear varnish the human eye dose not necessarily always see...
Reassemble it & attach the lever & spring... This is also a good procedure for storing the Genny away assuming the fuel tank is drained out as well. One final note, I believe the foam air filter should be first be washed out with warm soapy water, dried & soaked in clean motor oil, squeezed out thoroughly & reattached to it's housing that should also be wiped out with a damp cloth in advance... Sorry, I am not trying to discredit what you have done a good job of here, just a slightly different approach to it...
Thank you for sharing this.
Bill Farr... :>)
thanks. I appreciate any feedback. good points you bring up. I used cold soapy water for the filter.

Great video, how often should this maintenance be done ? I guess after how many hours of constant use? thanks
not sure. i think it says on the generator after so many hours of use. depending on how you use it i think maybe once or twice a year is good.
@@ArizonaHotHomestead thanks
thanks for a great and detailed service video. I have a Loncin to power my well water pump and when it works for some time the plug which is connected get too hot and the pump cuts off power. I usually remove the plug and wait it to get cold and reset the on switch again for it to work. Any idea what might causes that?
not sure... i wonder if the pump has some type of auto shutoff to protect it from to many volts. i would look at the pump and what causes it to shut off.
Thanks for your reply,. i think the pump has an auto shut off if it work dry or when there is an excess voltage. i did a good service on the generator just to be sure since it has not been serviced for some time. I noticed that the cable that is connected to the generator gets a bit hot. I guess i will have to check and replace the wiring.
Thank you so much, I feel very comfortable following your step by step process.
awesome. your welcome
I have a Generator on my wish list! Good information to know about & I suppose that different brands might not be the same to do maintenance on. But the concept I'm sure is the same pretty much. But I've never had one so I don't really know. Seems a lot what you do with a car. Thank you Jeff 👍👍👍
+MAE HAY you got it. Concept is the same just the details may be different. . I will send you good wishes. Maybe some day your wish comes true and you get a generator. Lol.
ArizonaHotHomestead thank you me too!😀
Thank you for your assistance Jeff! I can now go and do it!
awesome. do it ,,, do it,,,,, do it..... did you do it yet? lol.......
I guess everyone here and on other similar pages is getting to know how satisfying it is to
get a generator or other gas engine tool and get her going! If U yes YOU are wrkg on
generators, there is a website 'generator guru' where u can buy parts for just about any gen
out there, they also have educational vidz like how to check ur brushes or brushless generator.
Champion id gr8 for cust. svc. I buy a lot of parts from them. don't forget the push button
circuit breakers don't last for ever, nor do the ones in ur house. and remember amperes is the
electrical equivalent of torque and voltage is the electrical equivalent of speed. U need to have
electrical pressure to push amps thru the resistance of a load, and when amps flow there is
power being used. those amps turn all the poles in the stator into magnets and those magnets
are trying to grab the rotor, that is why the engine slows a bit under load. during a short, there
is so much current that the stator turns into an even more powerful magnet and stalls the engine
or trips a breaker.
You don't want a load on the gen when it is running out of fuel, that can mess up the avr
or voltage regulator, starting is to same, let her warm up first.
.
Thank you so much for this. My Champion is running like a , well, champion now...
super nice. feels good when things go well.
Great tips on how to maintain your generator
thanks.
Oil selection - As a small engine mechanic in south Florida I winced heavily at the conventional 5W30 oil choice. Ouch (for my climate). We definitely don't want to use that down here. We use our generators here in the summer when its 95 degrees. You northern folks that use it during ice storms, conventional 5W30 would work fine, but most small engine manuals warn that conventional 5W30 should not be used above 40 degrees F. When looking for a generator oil, try to find a heavy duty engine oil. Delo, Rotella, John Deere, Kawasaki, etc. are all heavy duty engine oils. They are thicker and shear less than run of the mill car oil. If you want to use car oil, try to find one that meets the spec of ACEA A3. This is a very robust spec. For my southern climate, and most likely use in the summer, I recommend synthetic 0W40, synthetic 5W40, SAE30, 15W40, and John Deere or Delo 10W30
what about synthetic. ?
One of the best how to videos ever.
one of the best? well ok i will take the compliment. lol. thanks glad you liked it.
Thanks for the video. I have the same generator. My instructions say for the air filter, once it’s cleaned, to soak it with motor oil and squeeze excess oil with a piece of cloth. Is that correct?
yes. i didnt go that far i just put a little bit of oil. i thought that process would make to much of a mess. lol.
How often do ya start your generators up? I hear something about keeping the magneto charged up?
you should start the generator every few months. i am not good at it. not sure about the magneto thing but by starting it up you can get the gas to flow and helps to clean out the ports.
I haven't run reg gas (yet) staying on propane.
We use ours pretty nonstop. After how many hours would you recommend a lil maintenance oil change ECT ?
i dont remember exact maintenance schedule but on the generator sometimes they put a chart but you can also find it by just looking it up online. i would think once a year clean everything out including the spark plug and change oil based on use. you should have a low oil shut off. i have been changing the oil about every 4 times it went low when i was using it daily. now i barely use the gen so i change every year with everything else. to me its easier to remember time of year than how many hours.
Awesome video, thank you very much.
you are welcome. have a great day
Excellent and very detailed instructions even down to the size wrenches needed A+.
gee thanks. have a great day
Today's ethanol gasoline is very hard on small engines so routine maintenance is more important than ever.
good point.
Theorey, when a generator is running let us say a champion, the rotor is a spinning field
wound with magnet wire whose ends connect to 2 slip rings. This rotor has a slight
magnetic field to it, not enough to generate any real power.
Inside the stator are a number of windings or coils, some have coils for both 120/240
volts maybe a battery charge coil and definitely an exciter coil. This coil furnishes a low
amount of a.c. voltage and goes to the AVR or autovoltage regulator. there is a tap off the
power winding that goes to the avr also.
the AVR 's electronics compares the amount of field needed to make 120 volts from the
exciter coil. lets say that for every volt of excitation voltage to the rotor field gives 15 volts
to the 120 volt ckt. the avr is set to put out 120 volts and sends from the exciter coil thru
the avr, 8 volts, the avr turns 8 volts a.c. into 8 volts d.c. and 8 v.d.c. goes to the brushes.
now with a light load, you could have 125 to 130 volts, the avr see's this and drops a volt
and the stator voltage goes to around 115, then during a heavier load, the avr puts out 8
volts to maintain that 120 volts
thanks for the detail info
10W30 Next time buddy 👍🇨🇦
my winters get down to -10 still use 10w30?
@@ArizonaHotHomestead that's what is recommended
Thank you.
thanks Jeff, I followed your video and all went well my generator now runs great excellent video!
nice. glad it was helpful.
If your not going to use the generator for a long time will it still run .... Or maybe i just turn it on to heat up ..once a week
its recommended that you at least start it monthly. one thing i found out was as it sits settlement in the gas settles in the small injection ports and clogs it up.
Do you find the 5w30 works better than the recommended 10w30?
dont know i only have used 5w30 . my temps here during the winter gets below 0 so the 5w is better for lower temps.
Instructions say put 10w30. Might be a dumb question but I have sae10w30. Is that ok to use? Thanks in advance
yes. i use 5w20 just becus it gets so cold here.
What size is the fuel tank and how long does it run at 1/3-1/2 load? My 5500watt continuous generator runs at least 10hrs on a tank of fuel. 5gak tank, 10hp engine. For low-demand situations, would you recommend a super efficient inverter generator from say Harbor Freight or the Harbor Freight 2-cycle 700watt ir so generator? Main use woulf be running a battery charger until I get solar panels.
the predator generator looks like a nice unit, but those 2 strokes are junk.
fliping720 One guy on UA-cam has over 400hrs on his 2cycle generator. It would be ok for someone just starting out that doesn't have much for funds but needs to run a battery charger and a few small items.
get the warranty then :)
Am more inclined to get the Predator 1600/2000watt genetator.
+Jeffrey Beyer nice. I like my viewers communicating. Helping each other is awesome. Each gen gives the size of tank, number of hours it runs based on 1/2 load. For the most part most gens seem similar. Good luck to you
Sir, i have a question. The rated output of my Honda gasoline generator is 0.75kva .How much mileage it would give , if i put half load (50%) on it . Can you tell?
i have know idea. i run it until it stops get more fuel and run more if i need to.
@@ArizonaHotHomestead Thanks👍

just look it up . i didnt replace the carb so i have no idea. look up the model and see if there are carb model numbers and look them up.

Please my generator oil gets drained really quickly. I use it for about 8hrs and its finished. Please do you have solutions for me?
wow. something is wrong. no idea why.
I got a newer version and there are two now screws and an electrical cord on the bottom of the carborator that are too tight to take off and are stripped now. Any recommendations
that sucks. they make a drill bit that helps to back out a stripped screw. not sure what its called but you can try that. other wise a small engine repair shop can fix it. in my area ACE hardware is awesome. good lucky

you bet. it was easier than i thought it would be
I picked one up at a yard sale for 50 bucks but it seems to have a problem it revs up and down but stays running. Would you have any idea? The volts stay constant.
no idea but check the throttle. there should be a spring and a return spring. i have a 2nd generator that i bought used that was missing a return throttle spring. the gen would only run but couldnt handle loads. does now. outside of that not sure. good luck to you.
Very very helpful video! Thank you
you are welcome
I have a Champion 4000 that's at least 8 years old (it's 2022 as I write). I have nowhere near the clearance shown for getting at my spark plug. It's near impossible to reach.
might need to rig up something. . wait... mine is about that old ... is there something you can remove to get better access? otherwise rig something up. maybe champion has special wrenches?
How about a video on adjusting the valves. I believe Champion asks that that be done every 100 hours. Thanks!
never done so. i am afraid to tackle that job.
very informative and well presented, thanks Jeff, just subscribed
welcome aboard. i was hoping the video was informative and basic
By the way Jeff what do think about using Marvel Mystery oil for maintenance?
never heard of it. i just use wants on sale or the cheapest without being a generic brand like walmart.
I always use marvel mystery oil in the gas .helps keep the carb clean from buildup.
Thanks. I have a generator that i just worked on and now it wont run. It ran prior to me working on it. I watched your video and i did just what you did.
That's not good. I wonder if in the process of cleaning some debris come loose and stuck in the carb ports. Maybe clean carb again.
Same exact generator here. I'm going to remove the carb and clean it. It runs, but it has to be choked a little.
there is also a way to adjust the choke maybe it vibrated loose . cleaning the carb can only be a good thing.
Could you guys tell me how much oil this particular model takes
You should've checked your top idle jet while you were doing the clean out.
now you tell me.
Thanks for all the info. Now I can do this myself.
good luck to you. glad it was helpful
THANKS FOR SHARING.. LEARNED FROM YOU.... THANKS AGAIN.
awesome. glad it was helpful
Is it possible to clean the jets without taking out the carb.
you can remove the air filter and spray a carb cleaner but keep in mind that wont remove any solids only help break down carbon and gunk.
So hosess much oil did it take?
no idea not much. i just poor in until it overflowed. lol
Greetings, filter should be changed as oil?
the air filter being that its foam can just be cleaned but needs some oil back into. it has something to do with the size and type of engine. if you want to look at the air filter when changing the oil you can do so but so far i have learned its not needed.
My generator will run only on an inch close choke but when i put it to full choke off it surges and dies. Whats the problem with it?
i am no expect. sounds to me maybe something is cutting off the fuel to the carb with the choke is open. did you try and clean out the carb injectors? otherwise not sure.
Should I drain gas before I storage power generator?
yes. gas goes bad. even if you use a stabilizer drain it into a container you can use it right away. even putting into your car works.
Dumb question but is it possible to overfill the oil
oh yea and i have. lol i just tip the machine or stick a screw driver in the help force some oil out.
Very good presentation. You're the man.
thanks so much.
Hey Thank you all the way from Sainte-Adele Quebec Canada,,,, mine has an electric start and the batterie is dead and I wont pay $100 + for a new one,,i'll have to figure out a cheap AC to 12 Volts DC converter with enough amperage to connect to it
they have converters available be sure to pay attention to the volts and amps rating.
Great hack for draining the oil on the garage floor. Use a paint pan!
thanks
that was no hack, because that pan was intended for that purpose.
Old video but excellent.
thanks. have a great day
Is there a website where I can find spark plugs? Ive been searching for hours and I still haven't found one
to find a specific plug your generator? I would look for the online manual for your gen first to get the information for the plug and search amazon or ebay or google by the info you get from the manual.
ArizonaHotHomestead thanks :)
hector from ajax Ontario, thanks very helpful
welcome and hello. glad the vid was helpful
I guess adding oil to spark plug socket & working the cylinder a bit is strictly for storage purposes
sounds good
Excellent thank you
