I’ve been slowly losing weight over the last year. Im down 30 lbs! I used to have such a negative view on food and weight loss. I constantly thought about what I had to cut out and give up. My secret now is that I think of what to ADD to my diet. Add veggies to every meal, add some fresh fruit to desert, add nutrition, add fiber, add all that good stuff, and you’ll see the difference ❤️

Congrats on your weight loss! Yep, totally agree. I've lost 3.5 stone (49lbs) over this past year, and when I started doing that, I made a deal with myself that the only changes I would make to my diet were ones I was prepared to stick to *for the rest of my life.* So, controlling my portions of starches like rice, pasta and potatoes (i.e. actually weighing them and sticking to the recommended amounts, rather than just throwing in an amount my hungry-eyes thought looked 'reasonable') was something I could commit to forever, but "okay, I have to completely give up eating chocolate from this day forward..." nope, no way, not happening! (I do eat way LESS chocolate than I did before, but it's now a proper treat, rather than just a thing I reach for to finish off a day.)

Cutting calories too much actually hurts long term weight loss.
One of the advantages of a plant-based diet isn't so much that it's low calorie as much as the abundance of nutrients in the diet, particularly fiber, which helps with long term weight regulation.

    1. Not eating enough
    2. Not eating enough starches
    3. Focusing on diets without understanding them
    4. Exercising too much
    5 focus on improvements

Ooh wow! That’s so my problem. I eat clean and healthy Monday through Friday, and then I eat whatever I want on the weekends, and also over eat bad bad foods as well. 😢 Thanks for the eye opener.

"Make your goal improvement, not perfection." That is the most helpful thing I have heard in regard to change! Thank you. I have made all the mistakes you mentioned. Now I just think about it like keeping a car in the lane. The lane is what I know is healthy for me. Sometimes I veer off, but I just correct and if I, overall, stay in the lane I will be healthy. No "dieting". No forbidden foods. Weighing only at my doctors, so I don't focus on the numbers.

I started watching you 3 weeks ago and I've lost 8lbs. I eat oatmeal with fruit in the morning. I still have my coffee with 2 tbsp creamer. When I'm at work at 5pm before I leave to go home I eat a potato. By the time I get home I'm still full and I have a small dinner. My sugar cravings are gone. No, I'm not working out yet.

I agree with a lot of what you say but, even though exercise doesn’t contribute a lot to weight loss, it’s really important for health. It will make you happier and stronger. But also plays an important role In both lowering chronic disease, and rising HDL. Second, other than eating good food, you also need balance. Fats, carbs, protein, and fruit/veg should all be part of your daily diet. And lastly WATER. Drinking at least 32-64 oz will greatly benefit you and reduce appetite. The only thing you need to have in mind is, going from drinking little to a lot of water will make you gain weight at first, but then it’ll help the weight drop faster.

Exercise has more benefits than just losing some weight. Actually you can exercise all you want but if you don’t change how you eat you won’t lose weight.

I was detoxing for a job drug test and chugging water. That alone helped me lose 5lbs in a week! Last time I went keto, I lost 10lbs in 7 days!!! It's possible. I hate working out but I'll go on a good hike. Find things that work for you and your body. It shouldn't be anything extreme

@bina nocht do you have any idea what ur talking about lmao? Athletes have SOOO much muscle and that muscle needs so much food. Muscle eats most of the calories because muscle weighs more than fat. You absolutely don't have the right diet if dieting didn't work for you. I work out every day only because I'm maintaining a calorie deficit. If u exercise and don't watch what you eat, you will not lose weight

I've just lost 60 lbs after being diagnosed with PCOS last year and I feel the thing that most helped satiety was trying to keep my protein intake as high as possible while maintaining a calorie deficit. Minimizing sugar can also cut down on cravings in a major way.
The main takeaway should be that one diet or lifestyle will not fit everyone. Experiment to see what works best for you as an individual. 🤗

    • @Jessie12N
      @Jessie12N 2 роки тому +2

You are so right. I was also diagnosed with that two years ago. I went on keto and lost a lot of weight but I had no energy to workout, I lost so much muscle mass and eventually gained all the weight back. Now I focus on gaining muscle and strength while keeping a moderate calorie deficit like she talks about in the video. I have not lost any weight yet but I have lost inches! and my PCOS symtoms have improved greatly. I also focus on high protein and minimizing processed sugar. I do eat fruit and complex carbs which help me in my intense workouts and cut cravings. Also with the new muscles I have built, I feel like I am able to enjoy fast food on nights out without sugar crashing (falling asleep) due to PCOS like I did before. I am happy to hear you are doing well too, PCOS can be scary but it is totally reversible without the need of medication :)

@@jdashlovela calorie deficit essentially. In my case, I used a lot of fasting. One meal a day and one day a week of just fasting. But I had to lose weight very quickly because of my condition. Now, im up to 2 meals a day. I've still got 15 lbs to get back to my base weight, but I'm happy to lose it slowly since I'm a healthy weight now.

I used to do calorie counting and always "fall off the wagon" by the time afternoon rolled around. And, then, it was a free-for-all! It was a huge revelation to me that I could not exercise away a bad diet when I started this permanent lifestyle shift nearly ten years ago. I also would often compare myself to others and say things like, "At least I am not that obese." I compete only with my best self these days. I use intermittent fasting to help me stay in a calorie deficit for the day as I can easily overdo healthy foods and put myself into a calorie surplus. I wish I knew with each eating opportunity is a chance to turn things around. Also, I was under the impression it is super hard work to stay at a healthy weight but the moment I let that programming go, I was able to reach and remain at my healthy weight. And, he I have been for nearly 10 years!

Your hair is on point today. So true about the weekend binge. My trick is to add up the calories in my app on binge days. It makes you realise how much damage you can do in a day. But if you do it during the day it shows you it’s not too late to slow down to at least stay in maintenance.

I'm loving your videos so much! I've eaten wfpb (99% oil-free and refined sugar-free) for years, but I've always eaten a little more fat than is recommended by Dr. McDougall. But man, it keeps me so much more happy and satiated! I'm at a good weight - suppose I could be skinnier, but I'd rather have an extra 5 pounds and absolutely love my food and be less tempted to "cheat" since I don't feel deprived.

Uhhhh thank you so much for this video. I’ve been vegan for over a year and I have tried to stick to the starch solution but have struggled recently with adding too much fats in so I have gained some weight. I was literally telling my self almost all the things you listed here… and this video called me out good! I am so over bingeing and having food rule over me. Got a big bag of potatoes so I’m set for the week! I feel like this video was made especially for me! Thanks for taking the time to make it.

    • @vilonflagle
      @vilonflagle 2 роки тому

If you struggle with sticking to eating the starches because you find you're adding in too much fat maybe a better solution for you would be to go with what you naturally seek out. Some people feel satiated by carbohydrates and others don't. For me personally, starches don't trigger satiety for me, protein and fat do. So maybe reducing your carbs so you can prioritize protein and fat would be something that you're happier sticking to and it would be easier for you. Or maybe you could do something like carb cycling? It seems like you're tracking and pinpointed yourself that you may be wanting more fat in your diet but sometimes we don't recognize that we've found our answers in our own data :)

Thank you for sharing your experience with weight loss. Could almost be my story.
We get so confused about all of doe’s many many diet plans.
What I learned is we should more listening to our stomach. Stopp eating when you feel not hungry anymore or also eat when you’re hungry. So our body tells as exactly what he needs, as well as we have to go to the toilet….but often we eat not because of hunger, we eat because of our emotions. We get boring we eat, we are stressed so we eat, angry we need food etc….
It must be a good balance between the deficit of calories and also back to a better togheter with what our body really need to work well with a healthy food. I’m plant based too since many years and I’m absolutely happy with that decision👍🏻
I enjoyed your video! Looking forward to dive into your channel 😍 thank you for sharing your stories💜 greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭

I'm glad I watched this Chelsea. I have been following the Starch Solution for two years and I have had great success I am down 150lbs. I still have 15-25 lbs to lose and I felt like my weight had slowed down so of course I did more research and learned more about the raw vegan diet and I thought this might help. Honestly, I've done it for one week and it's expensive and difficult. I missed my rice, potatoes, and oatmeal. I also liked hearing about over-exercising. I have been exercising 6 days a week and it might be too much. I love your videos and the knowledge that you share. I hope you and your family are enjoying your trip.

If you get a fitness band, you might notice that the exercise you do tends to come at the expense of non-exercise activities.
Walking is the best exercise for weight loss, because it doesn't stimulate cortisol, which is a stress hormone that causes your body to store fat and break down muscle.

  • @SoNick25

I have made all those mistakes over the years. Now at over 50, I am more focused on nurturing my body rather than torturing it. I have cut out lots of 'unhealthy' things and have added more veges, more sleep, listening to my body, less exercise, less alcohol, I enjoy what I eat and how I eat (using all my expensive dinnerware!!). I weigh close to my lowest adult weight and am maintaining it without feeling like I am denying myself. If I want to eat something I just do and enjoy every single mouthful!!!! It is more a mindset and a lifestyle. I hope everyone can find their niche!

Hey thanks for the video! I enjoyed watching and I especially like the fact that you stated not to solemnly rely on exercise to lose weight because obviously, life changes occur. However, I would like to point out at how strength training is so much better for weight (fat) loss in comparison to cardio because the body will use calories to repair those muscle tears hours post workout. With cardio however, once the workout is over, so is the calorie burning process.
So to anyone looking to workout while on their weight loss journey: STRENGTH TRAINING is the way to go! (Cardio comes 2nd).

    • @billking8843
      @billking8843 2 роки тому

Agree totally. That's what I have done and I have lost 12kg in 8 months, while building muscle. Most people don't understand the benefits of strength training, which is a pity. Strength training reduces your risks for just about every chronic disease. While so much health advice spruiks the benefits of losing fat, not enough spruiks the benefits of gaining muscle.

When I was in my teens it was all about cutting out starch. In order to lose weight you had to go hungry. Feelings of hunger equalled weight loss! Which made me feel so deprived I would go overboard. When I was at my slimmest, my stapel was high fibre starchy carbs. And I did not gain weight

I love to cook and 'experiment', but I've noticed that when I DO experiment, I either stall, or worse, gain a pound back. So, while I'm wanting to lose more, I need to keep the calorie deficit idea in the back of my mind. Though if I DO gain a pound back, so what?! That doesn't mean I need to be strict; there are SO MANY satisfying options while staying in a deficit. Just keep things in perspective. Until I found your channel Chelsea, I never would have thought I could eat this much and still lose. YOU ROCK!

@@ChelseaMae Pasta and rice are usually the culprits. I've realized that I eat mostly the experimental dish as a main, and forget to balance it with veggies. I think I watched one of your videos about 50/50. When I eat potatoes and beans, I eat equal volumes of veggies and have no gains (in fact, I lose). Also, I learned an important 'newbie' Vegan lesson: Stay away from packaged vegan foods. Just because it's 'Vegan', doesn't mean it's low-fat/calorie. CALORIE-DEFICIT is the key. Thanks Chelsea.

True, you damage your metabolism by being overweight. Nevertheless it gets better by losing weight. Also, while dieting it's important to have enough protein (because of muscle loss which contributes to a slower metabolism) and micronutrients.

What I really need to be more consistent about is putting up excess food I've made before I start eating because I have a tendency to double what I should be eating in a meal because I want more of my tasty home cooked food. If it's up, though, then it's not as easy to eat more

Hi Chelsea, if you could look through the planet, you could see me, in Germany ;-)
In my life I had ups and downs in my weight, 15 years ago I lost almost 30 kilos. My mistake was most of the time, that I thought, "the diet that worked before, will work again." That is not right. Every time I think it's time to loose weight, I have to find out, how my body will let go in the age I am currently in.
What I learned in this video is not to put pressure on myself.

I agree with everything you said.
I've lost 77lbs and my tips are if you live a sedentary lifestyle, try intermittent fasting (skip a meal). Drink a TON of water so your body stops holding onto water and keeps your system running smooth. And for those that aren't vegan, stop eating dairy. I still eat high quality butter, but no other dairy. Dairy is high in calories, for example 1 slice of cheese can add upwards of 115 calories. And my bloating went down tremendously without dairy, because dairy is an inflammatory. It's hard to break the addiction, but it can be done, I promise

Oh and lower your refined sugar intake. Sugar craves sugar, so that donut in the morning will make you want more sugar throughout the day. Sugar that comes naturally in foods is not a problem. It's the processed, refined sugars that'll have you craving. If I have 1 off day, it'll take me 4 days to get back on track because I just want more and more sugary foods.

i feel this. i started just setting eating more like the daily dozen (i'm not dogmatic abt it, but i use it as a guide to help me decide what i should choose) by dr greger as a goal over a yr ago. i went really slow and just each month added in another aspect into my goals so i could get used to it and make it more of a habit and slowly change my eating habits. i didn't really start losing weight until i added in beans in december, and since then (5 months) i've lost 40 lbs. i don't restrict or count calories, i only workout 4 days a week for an hr each (half cardio half weight training), and i have a rule that if i REALLY want smth, i'll let myself have a little. like if i want some like crisps or smth i'll have a small handful and then evaluate if i really am hungry bc then i'll have to make food, but usually it's just i wanted that, and so having a little bit without fighting myself means satisfying a craving so i don't binge. and i eat just so many fruits, veg, legumes, grains, etc that i don't really have..... a bunch of space in my stomach for super unhealthy food.
ooh i also love "healtifying" my food. so if i want fried noodles, i'll have some, but i'll add legumes and grains and veg and greens and all that. i don't deny what i want, i just /add/ my healthy food to it.

When I was pregnant my doctor told me that here in Japan (I am Australian) we encourage you to 'have them small and bring them up big' meaning, don't eat for two, keep your weight increase less than one kg per month and that sets you up for a smaller increase during pregnancy. I just ate per normal and didn't give in to crazy cravings so I gained about 6-7kgs per pregnancy. My kids were 3.3 and 3.5 at birth and both times I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight after one to two weeks postpartum (I still had a tummy tho). In Western countries 10kg gains seem to be them norm?? but you hear so many stories..I can't lose the weight, whereas here everyone goes back to being slim. Food for thought!!

Im on a diet right now and about 3 weeks in im progressing very good. As a big guy (1,95m, 115kg) i also need to be extra aware of my protein intake and muscle-training. Props to people on a vegan diet... i would be a goner in a couple of days because im really looking forward to my meals with meat and especially with fish. But maybe its just a lack of knowledge and good recipes.

Your statement about following rules rather than understanding principles in spot on. It is not only true for weight loss, but elsewhere in reality as well. If people understood the principles rather than blindly following/playing with the rules, COVID-19 would have been a lot less deadly than it has been (and still is).

Can you talk more about fruit vs starch weight gain?
I’m raw vegan low fat fruit based since many years and when I add starches without adding actually more calories I gain weight and fat 🤔 can’t we eat starches when eating high fruit? At the same time??? I’ve seen that a lot with my clients too 🤔
What do you think about that?
There are also people eating vegan very low calorie 1000 to 1500 and still gaining fat - they can’t eat less !

hello, i have been losing 35 lbs around last 9 months (yeah i m slow). I understand you tell your experience, i just doubt that all of them are correct. For example about exercising. Exercising is not about only burning kalories. When you exercise regularly, your muscles grows so they also burn more calories. So you do that exercise and burn 200 calories per day but after a month your body burns more calories even if you stop exercise for a week. Think it like if you have to take at most 1500 calories to lose 1kg per week because lets say your body is burning 1600 or 1700 normally (without doing any exercise), when you re doing exercise 1) your burn more (which helps) 2) you lose fat but gain more muscle (which not helps because you expect to see losing more weight but instead there is a transformation in your body fat=muscle, so you get thinner but you dont lose weight for some time) 3) with every muscle you gain, you burn much calories per day. So making exercise helps you 2 way, not helps you in one way (thats why the exercise is not recommended when you currently start a diet because you might not see a big difference as weight) but still makes you look thinner. Also gaining muscle is related with with what you eat a lot (proteins). So in conclusion you dont have to over-exercise but its recommended to do from 30 minutes to hour per day to lose weight. It will definetly help and make you look fit. By the way what i mean by exercise is full body exercise. Not only running. But i can agree with your other 4 suggestion/mistakes.
