- Using magnets and tiles with metal nuts placed at 2 inch intervals, I create a modular wall system for interior encounters. I love this project. It turned out amazing and I'm excited to share it with you.

I'm going to give your technique a try. I would like to make a suggestion. Instead of playing with "nuts" use roofing nails. They are cheaper, the broad head give you plenty of surface area for magnets.
When I try this, I'm going to try using the nails on the nails and glue the magnets in the floor. This will use less magnets.

If for some ungodly reason you can't find the components for your homemade black wash, any hobby-shop that carries Army Painter products carries washes by the large-capacity screw-top can rather than their usual dropper-bottles or those Citadel-style pots. Strong Tone, I believe, is what they call their black wash... Nuln Oil, by the reckoning of the Citadel range.
I just picked up some Army Painter Plate Mail Silver. Works a treat as a substitute for Iron Hands Steel, and I can see why some hobbyists/makers prefer the dropper-bottles. I also love my Army Painter detail-brush and pin-vice.
It's nice to have options. People have been asking for a wash recipe for a while now so I'm hoping to use this opportunity to pin one down. If it all goes south, the Army painter here I come.

Instead if nuts use round washers.
Pit the black wash in a small spray bottle and use a paper towel to dab it. Might save you time.
That finished scene is really cool. The broken walls looks great too.
Washers would work well too. That would add a neat circular pattern to the tiles.

I’ve been following the page a long time and watched you go from being hard on yourself and disappointed with building wagons, etc., to building some beautiful full-size walls that look vastly superior to the WizKids Dungeon Tiles line. You should try and streamline the building process and then launch a kickstarter for this stuff! Have you seen any paper/cardboard pop up terrain recently?! Might be able to help you save resources, time, and money
It might make the vertical stiles easier if you put the magnets on last. Cut the notch as indicated which gives you the ability to use your flush cutters to trim the stiles to length after you glue them in place.

Man,if we weren't all in one Archon Studio's Dungeons and Lasers kickstarters for the last couple of years we would be all over this.

I tried hot gluing thumbtacks instead of using the hex nuts. Seems to work just fine and took a bit less time. Also I painted the walls before putting the wood trim on.

I do something similar with my walls, but I use nickel strips under the foam, I like how thin your walls are! Subbed!
Good idea.
Double the ready board, now you can hide the magnet under the wood. I'm working on something like this but not using nuts, instead I'm going to use pins, steel sewing pins, easy to hide and works like a charm. Also way cheaper than the nuts.
Edited to add:
This also removes the "need" for any exterior walls and works as a locking system for the tiles.
It can also be used with way smaller walls, think the Wyloch walls, just to hint at the wall being there.

... considering modifying your method and using flat thumbtacks in place of the metal nuts. they should still anchor the wall magnets ok and would be easy to install just push them in.

I wonder if using the magnets in the board instead of nuts, then using pins or something in the wall may have been a better way to go? Though magnets in the wall pieces does allow for using them on various other metallic boards (or have them attached to air ducts for storage. 🤣).
Interesting to think about. My earlier crafts dictated this one. Though maybe magnetic sheets glued down with walls using pins would work better. 🤔

The main focus of the channel tends to be fantasy, but I do scifi on occasion. I think my scifi walls turned out well. They go great with the scifi foldable table top. I hope you like them.
Maybe instead of nuts every square could the bottom be all metal? Glue very thin foam on top of sheet metal.
Someone suggested dollar store cookie sheets. The canvas works well, but foam might hinder the magnets to much. It would need to be very thin. The benefits of foam, would mean you could actually texture it.

I think if you made a stone brick or cobblestone floor and used similar shaped pieces of metal you could disguise the floor really well !

3x3 magnetic sheets glued to your foam with a coat of grout to look like stone which is then drybrushed stone colours
That's an interesting idea. Sounds promising.
Im in no way criticizing, because these tiles are amazing, but when you drybrush you should "go against the grain" so to speak to preserve the shadows within the textures better.
I have a tendency to go crazy with the dry brushing. 🤣
This is very cool. I am newly new to this... What kind of foam did you start off with? The main board
The floor tiles are made from 1/2" xps foam. You can find the material in 4'x8' sheets at home depot. It comes in 1" and 2" thicknesses as well. Fairly expensive but one sheet will make many projects. The walls are from the dollar tree. The readi board brand is well loved by crafters because the paper backing on this board peels away easily. This leaves clean sheets of xps foam to carve, trim and cut.
How sturdy are the wall sections? I'm thinking specifically of the bottom edge where it's just foamcore and no framing sticks. Maybe if half width sticks were run along the bottom as baseboards it would up the rigidity and durability? Also, why texture both sides of your sticks with woodgrain when you were hotgluing them all to the foamcore? You could have saved yourself half your texturing time by only doing one side of each stick. Either way, the result looks fantastic. A great project, thanks for sharing.
The sections are incredibly sturdy. That bottom edge would be the weak point but I see no issues with standard use. Though you could add a baseboard along the bottom as desired. I thought about that texturing of sticks thing too, but often it allowed me to flip to the side with the best texture so it was kind of worth it. 🤣

Nice video. I was wondering. I saw your video where you use a brown wash on some wooden barrels from Hobby lobby. What do you put in your brown wash?
Unfortunately I don't have a solid wash recipe yet. I'm working on it.
Why don't you paint the stone and the timbers before glueing them on? Seems it would make it far easier and yield a much nicer result as well.
You could be correct. So far this is the method I've used and am comfortable with.
question. how would heatsetting the nuts do? like you do for 3d prints, with a soldering iron?

Those angled cutters you use, what are they called? I'm not familiar with them. they look handy for crafting.
If you search for "end cutting pliers" you'll find some similar. Can't point you to the exact pair as I have not been able to find it.
Great project. You should check out Matt over at RP Archive channel. He uses a thick wire embedded in the grid lines of his tiles for magnet walls. You might find that a lot less labour intensive.

If you want to try for more floor tiles, you can get a sheet of HVAC sheet metal and use it instead of the nuts. You'll need to experiment with the covering over the metal though. Even foam core would be too thick.

@@brokenterrain I thought about just printing the floor (possibly on construction paper) and gluing it down. Not as elegant, but fast and functional.
I imagine you could save a lot of time by pressing the nuts into the foam with a hot glue gun, the glue gun would heat up the nut and melt it into the foam.
Oh man, I'll be doing that next time I make one of these floor pieces again.

Hey I didn’t scan the whole comment list of anything so forgive me if it’s been suggested. But have you thought about buying a hex key wrench and just sorta warming it up and pressing the foam and melting it at the same time. (Pretty much exactly like the stamp you showed off)

@@brokenterrain I do a lot of heat setting threaded inserts in my 3D prints. Literally the same concept just plastic instead of foam. Heck depending on the tools you have available you could just warm up the nut and press it into the foam and somehow release your grip on the nut and it’ll just need a dab of glue on top. Glad I could be a bit of inspiration 😄
why so high walls ? at the edge of the walls the miniatures will not be able to stand correct. Also the 1 inch grid will not help on the previous problem. Try 1.25 inch grid. The wood work is very good.
I recognize the issue with walls. Blocking the sight of players and limiting space for minis. That in mind, they sure do look good for staging videos and pictures of your minis. 😉
What are all the materials you used?
Craft sticks, dollar tree foam board, my texture roller, paint and a bunch of magnets.
@@brokenterrain my dollar tree sucks and didn't have the foam ... and odly hobby lobby and other craft stores in my town stopped caring it or never restocked on it because it wasn't selling fast enough so basically I got to order it online. However every sing type of foam bored is just called foam bores for the most part so iv bought 5 similar types that all ended up being rock and slightly to thick or to bridal
