Pearl Mimic Pro - Overview of Library and Firmware Update June 2020

  • This is a quick overview of the updates recently made to the Mimic Pro, including a run through of a selection of the default kits - which have been re-engineered as part of the library update. Please use headphones or good speakers.
    The firmware update includes a set of presets specifically designed for all ATV cymbals, in particular the hi hat.
    The library update includes articulations for bow sounds on all crash and splash cymbals; and it includes a new set of DW toms.
    The default kits have been re-engineered by the Steven Slate team and have a whole new life to them.
    I have used default mixer settings here, and recorded straight to internal recorder.
    I'm proud to say that on behalf of ATV, I was a key tester for the new ATV presets, and helped the Mimic Developer during the initial stages of designing the ATV presets. The hi hat was certainly a lot of work!! It's been great to see that these presets have been so well received by everyone.
    The Mimic was already great. Somehow, they made it even better :)

    Fantastic playing! And, I may be a little bit biased, but updated kits sound absolutely gorgeous!

      Ha! Ha! This is a comment I may need to screen shot, print out, and put on my wall in my drum room! 😂 I'm humbled and honoured that you enjoyed the video and liked my playing so much. Yes, you may be a tad biased (!) but I think most of us agree with you anyway - the factory kits really do sound great after this library update. Many thanks Mr Slate! 😊😊😊😊😊

    Fantastic playing, and these samples sound great! I found your video after watching some Roland TD50X videos and I have to say this completely blows the Roland out of the water, especially the toms.

    Great job on the demo!! Great for hearing all the subtle differences. And thanks for being a tester for the ATV presets. Can't wait to get my hands/sticks on them especially the hi hat!

      You are very kind, thank you 😊 It's been a real honour to be so closely involved with the Mimic Developer and ATV - both companies are very forward thinking and realise the advantage of talking to each other and getting the equipment to be as responsive and compatible as possible. I'm so happy that the overwhelming response to the new presets, especially the hi hat, is so positive. To be honest, I'm mighty relieved!!!

      Ha! Ha! That's very kind of you, and an interesting comment about the windows and acoustics. For sure, the sounds that you can get out of the Mimic are superb. I've just finished recording an album for a Shadows Band, and listening to the finished band mix, you would not know it was edrums. Awesome 😊

    Great video! I have a video with some examples before/after the update, this can be helpful too. Great playing! I am wondering who are recording this video, my wife needs to learn how to do that! Lol. Btw, which video equipment do you use? Maybe a camera with a gimbal? Which ones? Thanks!

      Thank you! Yes, I watched your video - you beat me to it by 24 hours 😂😂 Very good, my friend. The video was recorded by my 18 year old daughter! She now records all my videos for me. A moving camera is so much better. And I stopped using camcorders recently, once I realised my iPhone 11 was way, way better. I can't believe the quality of these videos. As for the gimbal 😂 You just made my daughter's day! It's all hand held, no gimbal involved.

    How do you find the Drum-Tek bass drum in terms of its dynamic range? Can you play very soft notes and is it accurate? Kind regards from Sydney, Australia 😊

    • @jouxplan
      @jouxplan  2 роки тому +1

      So sorry for the late reply - I have been away from UA-cam for a few months. Th kick drum is one of the best things about this kit. There is a real 'give' in the mesh head and I can really feel the beater, in a way I never could with my Roland KD20. The Roland was very hard and actually caused me ankle strain - it was like playing against a piece of wood, in comparison. My bass drum technique improved tremendously once I got the 20" drum-tec kick. Yes, there is great dynamic range - but don't forget, that parameter really is down to the way you set up the module, and what module it is. In theory, there is no reason to think that a Roland module paired with the drum-tec kick will not work as well as I now have on my Mimic. In fact, for the first few months of my drum-tec ownership, I had the kit paired with a Roland TD30 module. The kick drum worked beautifully :)

  • @edrumsense

    What an amazing setup. what is the budget to get one drum like that? mine is more or less the same setup but all DIY and very cheap

    • @jouxplan
      @jouxplan  4 роки тому +1

      It's fair to say this does not come cheap. However I built it up over about 3 years, so in a sense it crept up on me. And I gradually sold off my previous Roland TD20/30 equipment, which helped cash flow and calmed my wife (a little).
      I got the Drum-Tec shells first in early 2017 (around £3800 retail price), then the Mimic in autumn 2017 (first one in UK I am told) - that was about £2300 retail. I began adding the ATV cymbals once they came out in Europe, in early 2018 I think. Hat, ride and a crash to start. Then months later another crash, a splash and the china. And most recently, another splash and a second 16" crash. I've lost track of the cost of the cymbals, but to get all this in one go at retail is circa £2400 I think. I gig with my kit all the time, and I've never had a problem - this includes playing in UK and Germany 😊

      @@jouxplan amazing. Thank you very much. I think I can go with some entry level drum shells and drum module to save money but I really love the ATV cymbal's look, and the reviews are amazing.

    • @jouxplan
      @jouxplan  4 роки тому

      You will not regret spending on ATV cymbals. They feel so much better under the stick compared to others (I used to have Roland CY14 and CY15) and they trigger beautifully. Of course, they look stunning too - the different sizes really bring a kit to life, aesthetically. Enjoy!

      Ha! Ha! I can't recall, we got it somewhere online here in UK. It is very kind of you to refer to my drumming as 'beautiful' 😊😊 I felt very awkward, trying to quickly cover all bases in 45 seconds (and always going nearer 60 seconds), with a basic groove, a couple fills, some cymbal bow articulations and make sure to get the tom sounds in. And some dynamics. And hat, and ride. And china. And splashes.......aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh! 😂😂😂😂

      jouxplan I love that “pre-surf music” the Shadows did. So great to drum along to, sounds simple, but isn’t right? Growing up in Southern California in the 60’s I am envious of playing in a band doing that style of music.

    • @jouxplan
      @jouxplan  4 роки тому +1

      It's very deceptive stuff to play, for sure. I would say it is amongst the most difficult stuff I've ever had to play, particularly live - there is no room for error in instrumentals like this and the band has to play it just right. I find it technically challenging, and a huge memory challenge too. So much crammed into 2 and.bit minutes. Stops, starts, changes in feel. It's fantastic. I will be posting more videos from this session over the coming weeks 😊

      Hello. The Drum-Tec shells can be purchased direct from Drum-Tec in Germany and exported to USA, I believe - I suggest you contact them. They are very responsive on email and speak better English than you or I 😂 The Pearl Mimic is available in USA, and I understand the ATV cymbals are now available in USA again, after a period where you could only import them from elsewhere (Europe or Japan). Hope this helps, and good luck!

    Does it allow import of multi samples sounds? Waiting for them to catch up to 2Box

    • @jouxplan
      @jouxplan  2 роки тому

      No, only single shot imports. I do not think import of multi sample sounds is on the Mimic radar particularly - it is not especially necessary, as the module and sounds and editing capability are so far advanced of pretty much everything else on the market today. Most of us with Mimics do not particularly yearn for multi sample imports, but I appreciate the point you make and can understand why some people want this facility.

    • @DivisionStreetDrums
      @DivisionStreetDrums 2 роки тому

      @@jouxplan you just answered my question and shot down your statement. How can it be that much advanced if it cannot do what the 2 Box can do. I know the Mimi doesnt have a 6" tom and yet I can import any multi layered sample I want into my Drumit as well as almost any pad.
      I guess it does have a color screen and that is a nice feature.
      Hoping someday the 2 box can catch up to the Mimic and add a big color screen.

  • @bobbycampbell3097

    Great vid, as usual! What is your preferred way of handling the fifth tom? Most of the Mimic kits, and even the Vex kits, are limited to four toms, so I’m wondering how you easily add the fifth one in while keeping it in the same character as the other four.

    • @jouxplan
      @jouxplan  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you! My 8" pad is an Aux 1 trigger. My 10" pad is 'Tom 1' and so on, until 2nd floor tom, which is 'Tom 4'. So, I usually simply copy the highest sounding tom in the kit (this will be 'Tom 1'), and put it onto my fifth tom (my 8" pad - Aux 1). I then go to the Mod tab in Mimic Mixer and simply tune it up higher, until it sounds right. With the new library, and the new DW toms, the first tom in the default kits tends to be the 10" DW CLT. In that case I can simply grab the available 8" DW CLT in the library, and place it onto my 8" pad. The 'character' of the toms / kit is kept by making g sure that when you copy the tom into the kit, you keep the instruments settings (it is an option at time of loading the instrument (tom) into the pad you want it to go to. Hope this makes sense - it sounds more complicated than it actually is!
