      Awesome! You're in for a treat with these new presets - I would guess it won't come with them installed with it being such a recent update, so you might need to check that! Hope you enjoy it!

    All right roland. Dont make regret buying the td50 over the mimic. Get a td50 update out! Need more uh and rides! Need trigger setting for your new acoustic design drum triggers

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      I don't think you should regret the TD-50, it's very capable! It is a shame about the lack of rides though. Ultimately, we should only base our purchases on what a module can do at the time of buying it as there's no guarantee of any updates, but it's certainly nice to have!
      I think they'll end up adding those trigger settings, they've updated other modules for new triggers in the past - BT-1 and RT-30 triggers spring to mind. So hopefully that remains a trend!

    The Drum preset updates sound great! Do you know if there is a way to eq out the harshness of the SS5 crash cymbals? They sound unnatural and don't mesh with the rest of the kit. I've monitored with DT 770 pros, Sennheiser 280 pros, and Shure 535 in ears and they all give me the same results with those cymbals (except the hi hats).

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Hi John! This isn't something I've ever noticed myself, I personally think the SSD5 cymbals fit alongside the kits better than the SSD4 ones which, to me, sound a bit dull and often need brightening up.
      However, generally speaking, it depends exactly which frequency you're finding harsh sounding. I'd probably start by using the high shelf EQ (EQ band 5 on the module) and bringing the top end down from about 8kHz and see if that's taming what you're hearing. If not, I'd go down a bit further slowly and gradually, eventually to about 3kHz. If you find that the harshness is going, then that's great. If you find the harshness has gone but also you've lost brightness, then the problem frequency is probably somewhere in between the very top end and where you've EQ'd down to, so I'd swap to using one of the other bands (2-4) at the same kind of frequency range as they will just drop the frequencies around the one you've selected rather than everything above it.
      If that doesn't work, an alternative approach is using those bands 2-4 the opposite way, boosting a frequency and then "sweeping" across the frequency range until you hear the harshness become even more prominent, then pull the band down from that point - this should remove it.
      Those are the two approaches I use most when it comes to EQ. Hope one of them helps!

    This is exactly why I put the Mimic Pro over any Roland Module. The toms are super realistic. You can even perceive the tips of the sticks hitting the heads as in a real drum. The machine gunning is Roland´s curse on its DMs.
    BTW , I got stuck with the worst possible Roland Module , the TD25...I hope one day I can sell it and get this beauty once and for all. In the meantime Im running SD3 and Slate Drums but the experience is never the same as when you are triggering directly from a module.

    Hey Luke. Nice demo bud! I’m planning on buying the Pearl Mimic Pro soon. I’m currently using the Roland TD-25 module which is a joke in my opinion. Fake, cheesy sounds. I wish I never would’ve bought the thing to be honest. I was considering upgrading to their TD-27 or TD-50, but I feel like it might just be more of the same with somewhat better sounds. I’m also not impressed at all with their customer service.
    The new presets on the Mimic Pro sound pretty bad ass to me! I’m just wondering if it’s worth the cost. I’m using Superior Drummer 3 currently since the sounds in the TD-25 are not usable for serious recordings. I’ll obviously always have more control overall using SD3, but I just want a module I can turn on and get REAL good drum sounds without always having to fire up the laptop and wait for the SD3 samples to load.
    What are your thoughts on this? I really like that you can layer snares on the Mimic Pro like you can in SD3. That’s an awesome feature for sure. I’ve read that the velocity settings on this module are better too. Do you think it’s worth the price?
    Thanks man!
    Josh

      Hey Josh! Thanks!
      Personally, I think if your ultimate goal is to have great in-module sounds, then it is worth it to me. As you say, you can get brilliant results out of a Roland module with a VST, their triggering is some of the best for that application. In that area, a TD-27/50 are a great prospect as the digital pads are fantastic to play on. But as you fear, the internal sounds are still very "Roland" - definitely different to the last generation, but still not "acoustic" quality so I would imagine you'd still end up tethered to your computer if you got one of those.
      It's a huge investment to get a Mimic so I always steer clear of telling people to 100% go for it - you need to weigh up if that cost is something you're happy to pay to get what you want. But the in-box experience is great, the module has been really well supported with updates (as you can see) and the trigger engine is up there with the best. Takes some getting used to coming from Roland but there's some things that you can tweak on the Mimic that aren't available on Roland modules. Personalised dynamics curves and hi-hat open/close curves are really powerful tools.
      In terms of flexibility vs something like SD3, you do get a good amount of control of mics and routing in the Mimic but if you need more specifically for a recording, it still performs well with VSTs too. The MIDI mapping isn't as plug and play but that can be remedied and I hear people have had great results, though I don't use VSTs so much myself.
      Hope that helps, good luck with your decision!

      Thanks for the response Luke! I’ll probably go with the Mimic Pro. It’s just crazy to me how expensive Roland’s modules are for what you get.
      They better step up their game. The competition is right on their ass now. Who knows what new modules are or will be in production to compete with the Mimic Pro. Then what?
      Take care bud!

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop This is incredibly useful advice. Wow, thank you! I was actually going to take a chance and email you, asking exactly the same question. I'm currently torn between a stock Roland TD-27KV, a Roland VAD506 (with TD-27 module), and a Drum-tec kit with Pearl Mimic Pro. My heart and ears (and eyes!) are telling me to go for Drum-tec + Pearl Mimic. My wallet says no. Lol.
      Sadly doesn't help that Roland are decently priced and well available here in South Africa, whereas Pearl has lost a lot of its market share here and can't find any word of a Pearl Mimic Pro in SA. But I'd rather know what the "right" kit is for me and then save up / take a loan out for it, than be immediately dissatisfied with a poor sounding module.
      Thanks Josh @olliebug1 for asking this question, and thanks again Luke for all the great work you do for edrummers!

    Makes me wonder what Roland's next move move will be when it comes to their flagship line. Since the mimic came along, there's no going back for high end products I don't think. The difference between vst level sounds and the td50 is night and day. I really think roland will need to respond. Still praying yamaha will come along with a 3k acoustic looking kit with a vst module and really shake things up!

    Hey Luke! So I got the Mimic Pro and I’m loving it so far. I noticed you don’t have too many pads hooked up, so you might not know the answer to this question.
    Any idea how to control the volume on pads hooked up to the AUX inputs? There are no faders for them on the mixer which is just weird. I contacted Pearl and they said to use the Perc tab to control the volume on additional pads, but this is incorrect. I have one additional cymbal pad I hooked up to AUX 1 and the Perc fader does nothing. I checked the routing and some of the AUX inputs are routed to the room and overhead mics. Am I missing something here? I don’t want to raise the volume on the overhead or room mics for one cymbal as it will affect all other pads. I’m hoping you can help me with this.
    Thanks!
    Josh

      I have 2 cymbals on aux 1 and 2 and both appear on the mixer individually, on cymbals click show and you will see their individual faders

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Hey Josh! As Kran says, you need to press on the cymbals channel (the button at the top of the channel will read "Show") on the mixer, this will expand outwards to show you all of the cymbals you have assigned individually. The same happens with anything you have multiples of - you can expand the toms fader to show all toms on different pads, if you have multiple snares, this will expand etc. Hope that helps!

    • @olliebug1
      @olliebug1 3 роки тому

      Thanks Kran and Luke! My bad. I had used the cymbal show button before, but I must have been on a preset that only had the 2 main cymbals assigned because there were only 2 faders. I didn’t think to check it again after assigning the additional pad. I appreciate your help!

    Is that the Roland digital ride with a Mimic Pro?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому +2

      It is! I'm using the Mimic via MIDI from the TD-50. The main downside is that they handle cymbal chokes differently - Roland use aftertouch whereas Mimic uses a MIDI note for choking - so you can't choke them with this method, which is a shame.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Probably just my ignorance. What's the purpose of doing it this way?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      @@caldrumr Pretty much just so I don't need to swap all of the cables around when I swap modules. I keep the TD-50 wired in then only need to hook up a MIDI cable to use the Mimic. It's nice to be able to use the digital snare with no hot spots too but the lack of chokes is a downside. Unless you happen to have all of the gear already, there's not really any big advantage or reason to do it though.

    Hey Luke and other Mimic Pro owners. I noticed an issue with mine and I’m wondering if any of you are experiencing the same thing.
    In the trigger settings under zone volume, the center volume only controls lower velocities. It does not control harder hits. The rimshot volume actually controls the center and rimshot harder hits and this seems odd to me. I’ve emailed Pearl tech support, but I haven’t heard back. Weird.
    Can anyone test this out and let me know if you have the same issue? I appreciate your help in advance.
    Thanks all!
    Josh

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Hey Josh! That does sound strange. I don't believe this is the case on mine but I will have a look next time I'm able to. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that could cause this is if your trigger settings are causing your harder head hits to actually trigger the rim shot samples. This could happen if the rim shot threshold is set too low on either the head or rim zones (I think the setting on the rim is most likely to cause it to happen). If I get chance in the next few days I'll have a mess around on my module to see if I can replicate it but I doubt I'll be on it before tomorrow.
