  • In this video, Alan provides many different types of output examples to provide better understanding of how the Pearl Mimic Pro realistically “mimics” basic mixing techniques in both studio & live environments for the acoustic drummer. You’ll be able to apply ideas from the examples to your recording, gigging, and UA-cam-creating life.

    Good to know what we can do with the Mimic's direct outs. I have a suggestion if you permit that, of course. A suggestion will be a Part 2 for this video, showing how did you configure the DAW comparing with Miimic, for example Comp and EQ. Nothing explaining how compressor works of course. Just showing in simple words and in video, it will be a great help. The KIT FX channel configuration it will be a great idea too. Again, just a quick view. Great video, thank you!

      I will be doing a pseudo part two... more about routing. I'll discuss the w/ w/o module comp/eq option. I actually just recorded tracks for a client last night, providing him multiple versions... one completely raw, one with module comp/eq, and one with DAW comp/eq. It really does show the diversity of the Mimic, and would be a great tutorial. I will definitely add that to the to-do list. Thank you for the comment!

    I think you should spend some time on explaining how to route separate drum sounds to an analogue mixing desk,, not all of us want to use daw, I’ve spent an extra two grand to have this facility and the people at Pearl have done their damned hardest to make it as hard as possible,, the main point of having an electronic kit is for recording without all the mics and spill over of a real kit,, most of the outs have cymbals as well as the drum sounds, would it not have been easier just to have an out for each pad,, I know it sounds crazy doesn’t it. I have managed to get round it but I could have done that for two grand less. It’s a great module, let down by user friendliness and ridiculous routing,,,,remember we are drummers not technology students.

    • @billbradleymusic
      @billbradleymusic Рік тому

      You obviously do not understand that they are making it easy, actually showing you the way to do it. Their master is what you do with separate dry tracks. The only reason to send out dry tracks is because you want to treat the audio differently. They gave you the option.

    • @billbradleymusic
      @billbradleymusic Рік тому

      And... Routing is exactly the same. In fact they call it audio on the output section. I'm still learning this. Haven't even received my unit yet. Any day now. The concept is general though.

    Hey Alan! I just got my Pearl Mimic Pro a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been watching your videos. I really appreciate the time you’ve put into explaining how this module works. It’s helped me gain more understanding of it, so thank you for the great content! I use my mimic pro with a Roland e-kit to play out live with a small band. Our PA is a Bose L1 system, with a QSC Touch mix 8 digital mixer. We have to send everything to the Bose in mono, basically panned hard left in the mixer on all channels as that is where we have the master out cable to the Bose plugged in on the mixer. I only have one channel available on the mixer for my drums and would like to utilize the master outs to obtain all of the kit fx. My question to you is, if I select “Force Master Out To Mono” in the module, should I essentially be able to just plug the ML output in on the module or will I still need both the ML and MR outputs to achieve the full signal of the kit? I ask because I have been hooking it up with just the ML output but I seem to lose the punch and clarity of most of the kit and more specifically the right side of the kit, when compared to what it sounds like in headphones. I will mention that I do have “Headphone Mix Set To Master Out” enabled as well. I haven’t been able to test it with both ML and MR outputs because we don’t have any available channels on the mixer, so any help and guidance you can suggest is greatly appreciated!

      @@VExpressionsLTD ok, cool. I did in fact drop the room mics and any reverb on the kit. Still not sure why I’m losing the punch and clarity of the kit overall. Guess I’ll try some different cables and see what happens. Thanks for the reply!

    • @DomCiaccia
      @DomCiaccia Рік тому

      Just circling back here for anyone else having the same issue as me…I found that you have to actually disable “Headphone Mix To Master Out” if you’re trying to run the kit in mono. Even with the “Force Master Out To Mono” option enabled, It seems to be overridden by the stereo headphone mix. Once I did that the kits in the Bose PA became noticeably fuller and punchier.

  • @pjherrel
    @pjherrel 5 років тому +1

    Another informative video!
    So the easiest way to keep kit fx sounds to FOH, is to use the main outs. But sound engineer loses flexibility on individual instrument volumes. Or use the direct outs, without kit fx, and the engineer has control over individual instrument volumes, and has ability to add EQ and compression at the board. So in simplest terms, is this correct?

    Very Nice , Alan. My question is how do I connect my mimic to my iMac to be able to work like this. I really like the mimic sound and I have Vex expansion so Im happy with the sounds but i need to record drums and send to my friends who will then mix with their instruments to create songs. The problem is that I send my drum files from internal recorder and the only thing they can do is adjust the master volume without being able to play around with different channels. What would be the easiest way for me to do that and send a file that they can use on their on DAW? Is it possible to record in one DAW and listen/mix in a different type of DAW?
    Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance

    • @VExpressionsLTD
      @VExpressionsLTD  4 роки тому +1

      I assume you mean you want to send stems for external mixing. First, you need an interface. Second, you'll need a DAW like Reaper or Studio One. Although all your direct outs can be captured through multiple passes by starting with the midi performance and running it back through the module for recording stems, you'll probably want at least 8 inputs, and up to 16. As little as 2 will work, but that means a lot of passes. 8 or 16 is ideal. I personally use a Roland Studio Capture to capture up to 16 at a time, but any decent interface will do. Many people just getting into recording start with the Focusrite Scarlett series. I do recommend the Roland Studio Capture for its "bang for the buck" and quality. I have a link in the description under "preferred accessories". Start your research in these interfaces and find what you think will work best for your system. It will probably come down to your budget in the end. Beyond the Roland, 16 channels jumps considerably in price. I'm very happy with the Roland Studio Capture.

    Hi Alan, I am writing this on behalf of our drummer who just got a Mimic Pro with the new firmware installed. We have a couple of questions - even after watching your great video :) We want to use the direct outs as well as the Stereo Out (1/2). What we learned is, that the Main Out / Stereo Out 1/2 will carry the Click signal as well - is that true? Can we mute the Click from the Main Out? Can we also mute other instruments from the Stereo mix (Main Out)? Is it possible to have direct outs routed for Kick, Snare, HiHat and Ride?

      The direct outs will carry the instrument EQ/Comp, but not any mastering EQ/Comp/FX. There IS a separate section for adjusting the DO output levels, but I don't remember off the top of my head how to get to it.

  • @EduTred
    @EduTred 5 років тому +1

    Hey Alan, great video as always! Quick doubt please, regarding the Outputs 1 and 2. Those outputs are supposed to carry the Master Mix. When I want to go simple to a PA for instance, when I connect Outs 1 and 2 (stereo) to a PA (mixer in fact), the sound level is much lower (as you stated in this video) and it seems not to match exactly the headphones sound (fx and sound characteristics). Note that Headphones Mixer and Main Mixer are equal, I have selected the "Reset HP/Master Mixes to Default" option. When I select "Send HP Mix to Master Out & Disable Master Mixer" option, this sends exact Headphones sound and characteristics, so its perfect to send to the PA. My question is, what Output 1 and 2 are for? I mean, if I dont use the "Send HP Mix to Master Out", I can use them for what? To send the metronome, Song Player and Click as appears in the routing screen? The best way to copy the headphones to PA is what I am doing, or try to replicate them via stereo 3 and 4 for instance? Please let me know if I am missing something, I would like to know your ideas to best send a stereo mix to the PA. (sending everything to Outs 3 and 4 is helpful somehow?) Thank you!
    Edit: I think I got it. Watching your video once more, you say that the Kit fx (comp and eq) only goes out via Masters 1 and 2. As in several places that I Make gigs doesn’t have a mixer or an engineer capable of recreating those comp and eq, in my case is better to have Masters 1 and 2 to the PA, with “Send HP mix to Master Out” enabled. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!

    • @VExpressionsLTD
      @VExpressionsLTD  5 років тому

      Your Kit FX will go to the Master; regardless of if you're swapping to HP > Master. Here's the skinny... Masters 1/2 out are line level. Your HP jack is powered to drive headphones. They are not the same levels. This is why you never plug HP jacks into powered cabinets. You'll blow them up if you're not extremely careful. If the mixers are identical, you will still get the same "mix" (as you mentioned); it will just be much lower. (line level) This is NORMAL. Your console/FOH engineer should use "gain" to increase any level they need to bring up. This is generaly anywhere between -20 and 0. Most often it's around -10 to -6, but depends on the equipment. All this leads to a clean line level input that can be increased with that gain at the receiving mixer. So, what you've described is completely normal. Be careful about sending the HP mix to the Master. The same warnings apply; especially if you're using the 6dB HP boost. It is always best/safest to send the Master 1/2 signal and let the engineer apply gain as needed.

    Hey Alan. I’ve had the Mimic Pro for a while now and I’m just starting to try routing drums out individually. I’m a little confused by this. I see most drums default to the 3/4 output. When I tried routing the snare and layered snare to the mono 3 output it sounds like complete crap. I also can still hear all other drums even though the snare is the only drum routed to the mono 3 output. I’m sure I’m just missing something here. Should I be routing each snare to it’s own output? Any tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Josh

    • @VExpressionsLTD
      @VExpressionsLTD  2 роки тому

      Direct outs are the direct instrument channels. They carry no master effects. So, the reason you think they sound terrible when compared to the master signal is because you are bypassing the additional processing and effects. The crosstalk you hear is likely the room/overheads. You would need to turn those mics down on the snare page.

  • @jovanbunjevic1723

    In a Live/Gigging situation, would I send all 14 DOs to the board? Master LR, then all the rest 3-14. On DO Channel 13 and 14 I assume I’d send the Reverb L Reverb R, if applicable to be used for the venue and not send any Room? I figure the Room and Reverb isn’t needed usually inside but if you’re outside might want some Reverb. I’m thinking this is the correct routing because the DOs only carry eq/comp but none of the master processing - which could affect the sound quality. So, I’d have to send the Masters also to FOH. My assumption would be I’d just remove the Room and adjust Reverb to taste in the Master Mix tab on the module.
    Are there any Room/Reverb adjustments in the module I’d have to change on an instrument level that’s being sent to the Master outs? Or will that take care of itself in the Master Mix tab if I kill off the Room and Reverb level?

      Adrian Holland make sure you have correct pad selected in menu. Also run capture velocity and cross talk.
      If it still double triggers go into pad settings and raise retrigger slightly while hitting till it stops. Threshold also could be to low so it is a balancing act with those two settings.

      1/2 are my master L/R. Everything else is 3-14. On my Roland Studio Capture, that’s channels 3-16… 14 channels total. I guess you’re not counting the masters as directs. (ML, MR, BD IN, BD OUT, SN TOP, SN BTM, T1, T2, T3, T4, OHL, OHR, RML, RMR) What else do you need direct? That’s everything but reverb. If you’re running directs, reverb would usually be handled externally in the studio. You generally wouldn’t need rooms, if this is for gigging. It’s kind of one or the other.

    • @SuperBroggers

      @@VExpressionsLTD That's right, I'm not counting the masters as direct outs: I've tried to use ML , MR as direct outs but haven't been able to use them independently to get 14 direct outs total. This is because any instruments isolated to ML or MR remain assigned to one of the Direct Outs Mixer outputs (3 to 14) so it doesn't free up any of those channels for something else. I have an almost identical set up to my DAW as you've shown in the video, but have not found a way to utilise the mix outs (1 & 2) as direct outs. I don't know if I've overlooked / missed something, but If you can explain how to do this that would be much appreciated. Thanks again for your time, Regards, Mark

What else do you NEED to send? You can always record the midi performance and changes options with multiple passes. You’re literally unlimited that way. My church uses a DB25 out and have the snare and bass on its own channel then we have Tom's on two channels and cymbals including ride and hi hat on two channels and I let the sound man EQ and add compression to the channels to fit the drum sound to the band and sanctuary.
    My sound guys at first didn't understand that the cymbals are overhead and have Tom's bleed into it like a real kit but they are inexperienced and not schooled on mixing and sound. They get it now and have it dialed in nicely.

    There is a lot to chew on and I love it (very informative), but 14 direct instrument outputs ... I.E. 1)kick in 2) kick out 3) snare top 4) snare bottom 5) hi-hat 6) ride 7) Tom 1 8) Tom 2 9) Tom 3 10) Tom 4 11) OH left 12) OH right 13) RM left 14) RM right ... I have read your responses in replies and other threads, but don’t know how you got 14 individual outputs from the Mimic for the video ... since as most people continue to say, the 1/2 channel outs are mixed and not assignable ... but it really doesn’t make too much of a difference to the points you were making ... Seems the main theme is on how to record versus a live setup (I’ll expound later) ... Question, the ‘internal track’ is usb out from the module (correct? haven’t done it and didn’t realize that a stereo track was sent via usb, but I don’t have my Mimic connected to a laptop at present... good to know) ... main outs being 1/2 and of course and the stereo head phone outs complete your three master pre’s before your comp work with direct inserts from 3-14 from the Mimic ... so a few questions, how do you approach the cymbal gain individually for the overhead mics (OH is a global setting and I have issues with the gain of 1 cymbal overtaking, bugs me sometimes and I wish the RJ45 connector could link to a router and a clone of my Master Mix could be set to FOH via Wifi so they could mix as needed) ... anyhow, if you ever do a part 2, I would love to know what you think should run to FOH ... I am using an XR18 like a stage box to run as a sub mix for the engineer ... since the line outs are raw and the mix has FX and it’s a live setup and doesn’t lend itself to extra tweaking time should I create a compressor/eq bus to try to match my master mix before a show ... again, if they would have just made the Master mix off the Mimic an app that could live on an iPad and control my Mimic I wouldn’t have to think about all of this or find work arounds ... help me Obi Wan

      ... I’m not so concerned with the outputs actually, I will probably get a TD-27 to drive Rolands digital ride and snare and I have a multipad for some effects (claps, reverse crashes, tambourines, shakers, loops, etc.) ... I also have your three Mimic packs (and thank you for your work) ... I saw the potential with eDrumming about 10 years ago and have watched as the industry slowly crawls through the technology potential we already know exists ... we get a tool ... it has potential and they make their money and move on ... meanwhile, we argue amongst ourselves .... thank you for reinforcing the basics of recording .... strangely that is one of the reasons I play electronic drums now, I want my stage sound to best represent my recorded sound ... acoustic drums at the audience level don’t sound like the plastic we strike on stage (they are processed) ... I feel I am cutting out a middleman by playing electric in some ways ... anyway, thank you

      Thanks for the kind words. When I want to multi-track, I record the midi performance first, clean up any imperfections (although I’m a purest), and then run passes back through the module to capture the maximum individual options - if I feel the need. If it were for an actual studio project, this would be the case. For UA-cam stuff, I just record the Master signal internally or to the DAW with a voiceover for camera syncing. (that’s a while other subject) This video is more about explaining how modules work regarding internal routing workflow and the difference between direct outs and master outs (sorta). It is not intended as a mixing/recording tutorial at all. In a live situation, I would be running many options in stereo pairs or mono, depending on the FOH capabilities. In a live environment I likely wouldn’t run the room or reverb. Hope that helps with some ideas.

      It's kind of impossible to achieve "true" hip-hop sounds, as they often utilize effects the Mimic does not provide. Personally, I would want to have distortion and muffle modeling available to do such mixes. I think this is better achieved on the Roland modules, as they do provide these effects and options.
