- In this video we are taking some softwood cuttings from lilac branches we acquired whilst helping our brother with his new garden.
This technique is really easy and can help to quickly multiply your favourite lilac shrubs for free.

I do like a nice, simple presentation -shall be giving this a go. 🙂
Thanks so much, glad you'll be trying it. At this time of year, the stems will make great semi hardwood cuttings 😀
What gorgeous flowers. You are the King Of cuttings Paul and it'll be nice to have plants from your brother's original. I've been potting the tips that I've cut off my Cosmos thanks to you. I give loads of Cosmos to my dad and sister-in-law every year so it's good to have extra plants for free. It's been a lovely day here today which was well timed as I had a massive bedding plant delivery arrive. I've been potting them up but still have more to do as I ran out of compost. The family can't believe that I've used up my stash and have been pulling my leg as I normally have more bags than the garden centre but I've been trying to keep my new car clean and tidy so haven't bought any for a while. I'll have to buy some tomorrow. Take care. xxx
You know how I love to propagate Wendy 😁. Even cut flowers are not safe with me around! You can literally double your plants by growing on the tips of cosmos and they also root really quickly in water too. It's so frustrating when the compost runs out in the middle of potting up, but there is the consolation of another garden centre visit 😁. Take care xxxx
Oh you're gonna be happy with lilac in your garden ! This ones has beautiful flowers :) I bought another variety called Miss Kim this year to keep in a container; it might be a bit young to try and take cuttings already.
It's such a great shrub with an amazing scent isn't it 😍 Miss Kim looks like a lovely compact variety, great for a pot. We have a standard lilac in the front garden too which smells divine. You can never have too many lilacs! 😀
Thankyou so much for sharing your videos
You're welcome Maria, thank you for watching.
I've noticed you bag the stem cutting pots but I don't think you covered your Eryngium tray, Would I benefit from covering my Eryngium tray? Different methods for stems and root cuttings? Thanks in advance, Richy 😀👍
Yeah, the stem cuttings do better if they are bagged to prevent moisture loss. The root cuttings don't need it. I'd leave the eryngiums you've done as they are otherwise there could be a tendency to rot. 😁👍
Hi, can you keep lilac as a shrub rather than a tree?
Yes, just prune it to the size you want after flowering. If left un-pruned it will take on a tree-like shape.
Great video!
How many years would it take for the cutting to actually produce flowers?
@mienkedezoete2146 Probably at least 3 years. The cuttings have to do a lot of growing before they will flower. Thanks for watching 👍
