Great advice. I like the way you care for all the creepy crawlies. I've definitely seen a decrease in the number of butterflies and bees this year. Don't know if you saw Gardeners' World last night but they had an interesting bit about plants changing colour when they've been pollinated. Beautiful day again today so I hope you've both been able to get out and about. I've just come in from planting Allium bulbs. I order all these bulbs but forget I have to plant them! Have a wonderful weekend and take care. xxx
We don't like to hurt anything, even the 'pests' are part of the wider cycle. We have seen lots of bees and wasps, but not many butterflies as you say. Even the Buddleja hasn't attracted that many that we've noticed when we've been outside. Yes, I did see that about the changing colour when pollinated, it's fascinating! We've have been spoilt this week with the lovely warm days and yesterday was lovely too so we made the most of it and got some filming done. Rain here though this morning so what we had planned today will have to wait! It soon comes around to bulb planting season doesn't it? We still have ours to plant but our best pots still have plants flowering in them so we're giving it a little longer. Have a great day Wendy, take care xxxx
My first job was to remove the old poly from the cold frame 6ft up in the air and replace with 4mm twin wall polycarbonate sheeting. I cut my liatris down and put the stems and seed pods in bags but probably wont use them. Salvias, well I go against the general rule and cut them down to about 6" (not yet but will before heavy frost) then put the pots in the shed, no light or anything, monitor and give a little water if I think they're going too dry but only water maybe 2-3 times. This tip was from a horticulturist of over 30 years experience and is successful for him. I do think this method may induce a slow start to the following season but mine are still between 3.5 ft and 4ft tall👍 He said it's not a pretty way to overwinter them but the main goal is to keep them alive within minimal space. I'm not suggesting you do it, just saying it worked for me. I only lost 2 last winter because I left them outside and they got too wet 😒I've put my salvia cuttings from July in my kitchen windowsill as backup and parents took 1 Black n Bloom off me in case I kill mine 🤣 I'm looking forward to the changes you do next year to your garden, as I myself to mine. We can't save everything but it's a time to reflect and decide what's worth keeping and what needs changing, myself is more drought tolerant plants (not all) I still need to insulate the greenhouse too. Nice vlog and tips and looking forward to the next garden tour, thank you & stay safe both of you 😀👍
Sounds like you've been busy Richy with all that remodelling. You stick with what works for you with your salvias, we're lucky to have summerhouse to put plants in but otherwise we'd be stuck. Keeping them alive is the main thing. We have some very exciting plans in the pipeline and all will be revealed very soon 😀. You have your work cut out even on rainy days because a lot of your plants are under cover. It must be so time consuming, especially after working all day. We are looking forward to filming the October tour soon when we get a dry day! Hope you have a good rest of the week and weekend. Take care 😀👍
@@MadAboutGardening That's great news 👍 However, not so for my 2 cuttings. The Magical White, it had a tiny green leaf but it fell off so I gently dug around looking for roots, there was none, just the damp cutting so I pulled it out. The Big Blue, it still only has 2 tiny leaves so I've just left it alone, not even looked for roots. It's probably the same to be honest. However (2) lol, after I dug my original Big Blue out and moved it, part of the root broke off and I thought it would die (the snapped off bit) so I just shoved it in the soil anyway and it now seems to have some new small green shoots above soil. I'm either going to just leave it alone, or lift it out with a trowel (with plenty of soil) and put in a small pot. It didn't flower this year which is why I moved it. The 2 Neptune Gold I moved and put in the planter above bins, they did lose their leaves but have since grew some new small ones so maybe they have settled in 😀👍 All my other Eryngiums are alive but some may need different places next year so will study over winter and move when dormant. The new E. Topaz, (still no info online) did nothing except leaves so, maybe it's too early and hope next year it'll flower. Maybe I should contact Elizabeth for more info but it's alive and no issues except no flower. It's staying in it's own dedicated pot. Thanks for asking, I'll check the other reply now 👍
@@MadAboutGardening Yes, been busy in house and in the yard and work. I'll probably try and give 2 large Rockin™Deep Purple plants away next year if they survive. I'm not going to over winter them but will still protect the pots under the canopy. I want to try and get another Salvia Rockin™Fuchsia (pink) again and do a cutting for my father. I got up today with yard plans, opened the back door to find everything covered in dust and a man next door up on a ladder chipping the pointing out from their wall 👀 I started to dead head and pulled some spent Verbena out and I heard a voice "You enjoying your time in your Oasis?" I replied "I was but it looks more like the Sahara Desert now!" He didn't speak again 😒 It's all over plants and green house and canopy blocking light out and all my solar light panels are coated with it. Later I heard him talking quietly to the female shop owner saying something about going to get the hose pipe and rinse down but he never did. I was going to rinse my side but don't know if he's finished or going to do more tomorrow 🤔 I was going to get more photos today but didn't happen! Yes, Andrew hinted in the tour about new plans, can't wait 😁He said something about ripping nearly everything out (family related plants stay, Rose etc) and filling it with multiple Salvias (hard and soft), Liatris Spicata (Purple and white) , Eryngiums galore and 600 grass plants of 24 types. True story 😎 I'm off until Monday now but get up at 3am then 😒 I'll try and make the most of my weekend and you both do too, enjoy your time off and relax, take care 😀👍
@martianleaderrichy1520 Glad your Neptune's Gold seem to be okay but sorry you lost some of the others. They are very prone to rotting! I lost some too, only 1 big blue left but lots of Neptune's Gold 👍. They can be temperamental with flowering, our main Neptune's Gold sulked this year after disturbing it for cuttings in the winter. Once established though, they are reliable. Thanks for the update Richy 😀👍
I've grown Sea Holly for the first time from seed and a couple of them have flowered. Should I just leave it as you said as a structure? Does it need to be protected in the winter - one is in a pot and the other has been planted in my front garden near a wall Cheers
That's amazing, you must be so pleased to have grown them yourself and see them flowering. We recommend leaving them for structure and also the seeds are a good source of food for birds. They are hardy plants so no winter protection is necessary.
What plants do you have in the large pot with multiple holes on the right at the end of the video - I just bought one it's about 24" tall am looking for ideas of what to plant into it 🌿 I'm on the northeast coast (Whitby) 🌿
It's planted with strawberries, comfrey and a lemon balm herb at the top we use in tea. These pots are great for herbs and strawberries. I've also seen other people plant trailing bedding plants in the holes and more upright plants at the top, creating a cascade of colour.
Thanks for the tip on late planting tulips to help avoid fireblight.
No problem! We're still deciding which varieties to buy 😀

Forgot to ask - how are your eryngium cuttings doing? Ours are growing on in 9cm pots nicely. 😀👍
