They are a little more durable than I thought (if they were recently installed). Bought a boat and the owner started it and to my shock went wide open with no water. The motor didn't seem hot and it was a good deal so I bought it. Changed the impeller and the old one was in perfect shape. It probably had enough lubricant whether H20 or whatever from the past still (maybe liquid soap from an install) in the pump and on the impeller to protect it. I run this outboard every week 1964 evinrude and it has never let me down.
The gear case wasn't cracked but the inside was messed up, fork and gears. Some one put new ones but never work the same so it skipped to often until I decided to buy this other motor
I had just been running it with the water hooked up, so the impellor would've still been wet. I had unhooked the hose to move it out front. I would never run one when dry......honest.
on 2 strokes, fouled plugs are usually either the fuel mixture being too rich (carb adjustment). Too much oil in the fuel can also cause this, but it's unlikely, unless someone measured wrong.
Hi Steve I'm the guy who bought your motor and was very happy with it until u broke the lower unit last year hitting the concrete boat ramp. I bought another motor to use the lower unit on the broken one but it was easier to get the second one running. Now the rings from the second motor got damaged loose the gear oil and it needs repair. How much you think will cost me to fix it by some one like you and would you be interested on the job? I still have the motor I bought you, might be good for parts.
Hi, Ihave the same motor, Johnson 40 HP Electramatic, What year is your motor and the model,,,mine is RKL 27...and how much are you asking for it? Thanks.
I asked 400 for mine, but I had just rebuilt the lower unit, and new water pump impeller. I settled for $300 and took a 7 horse merc with issues in trade.
Sorry, I didn't own this motor very long. The old boat it was on developed a crack in the hull, so I junked the boat and sold the motor. I have another couple series on outboard motors, but they won't help you because they're quite a bit different. The other Johnson I worked on had a completely different ignition system.
Hello Nelson, Nice to here from you. Sorry to here about the motor. I assume you cracked the gear case on the first motor. What happened to the second motor?? The motor I sold you had a new gear set in it. Do you think those parts can be saved to fix the second motor?
Well if it didn’t need a impeller before it sure as hell needs one now.
Tq, so much, we seen this as before we using so power
Yes, I traded it for $300 cash, and an 80's vintage small mercury outboard, that needs work, but I have not gotten to it yet.
so much for the water pump!

Yes, I use it with another outboard, they hold up better than the new plastic ones.

You are correct if the impeller is still wet this is not an issue at low speed.
@@wg7644 poster said he would not run it with it dry. But have video of it running then hooking up the hose.
@baqqola It is a model RDS-27M. I'd like to get $600, because of all the dough I had sunk into the rebuild of the lower unit.
No on the second motor the Bering behind the propeller got worn out and the seal from that ring burned letting the gear oil leak out
I just bought a motor like that and they say it keeps fouling plugs

What kind of control cables are those, i have the same motor but needs a new throttle & shifter cable.
matthew hamilton Mechanical, really old school evinrude/johnson I might have an extra set.
Well i need a couple at 17'. If you got them i would be happy to buy them off of you
hmm use in the salt water only? you'd go out there and no troubles ever? no need for second spare in case that one broke down? that's good to hear.
hubie1canubie lol, no I only ran it on a fresh water pond near the house. It never gave us trouble, but we were never far from land.

I may be buying a 73 mfg with(looks exactly like this) says 40hp Johnson 2 cylinder. Do you know what year the engine is? Peace. Andy
This was a few years ago, so I can't remember for sure, but it was definitely a pre 1970 model. I think it was a '64.
@@stevewatr Looks like a 1962
How much is it worth? My dad has one that was given to him,and is wondering what it's worth?

Any info on motor itself? In mist of restoration
