Beautiful 138 year old Once Grand Abandoned Burkhardt Mansion in Ohio

- Built in 1886 by prominent Cincinnati businessman A.E. Burkhardt. Lots more history can be found online if your interested as well as pictures of the home from back in the day. Was added too the NRHP sometime in the 1980’s. Over the years the home was sold and became apartments as well as a senior nursing home in its final years. Last used in any capacity in the early 90’s, and has sat vacant since. Now it’s set too be torn down for a new apartment complex or atleast that’s what the sign out front reads.Thanks for watching hope you enjoy!

This house was very prominent in it's day and it disgusts me to see how young kids can annihilate a structure like they did to this one. The blatant disrespect, is truly staring you in the face with every corner turned and in every room shown. Put on the historic record of Historic houses on March 3,1980 only to end up like this.
Edgewood was listed for sale in 1902, but after no buyer came through, it was sold at a sheriff’s sale for half of its value to Joseph. Joseph died in 1904 but the home remained with his wife until 1919 when their son Arthur Joseph took ownership. Arthur and his wife Florence lived in the residence until 1936 when it was acquired by Robert H. Gibson
The mammoth building was then converted into the Queen City Rest Home, a residence for the aged, by Grace Jones in 1946. It later became the Queen City Nursing Home and remained in operation with 37 beds until 2004. It was acquired for $250,000 in 2005, with the goal of converting the building into office space. The Burkhardt residence was proposed for demolition in 2014 for an assisted-living facility.
It's questionable about demolition since is was registered as historical sometime in the mid 80's, but who knows.

Wow, that house would be absolutely beautiful restored.
So many of these gilded age mansions didn’t last very long. The owners were older when they built them and as they were sold the upkeep was incredibly expensive. They are fascinating and this one was def a beauty. I love the eye shaped window. Thanks Ruby for getting us the video from the attic. Take care and stay safe.

it is all about money,right? no funds for preservation of the heritage in most of modern times...people are supposed to live in cheaper glass/aluminum/plywood/plastic lately dwellings...full of allergens?

Referred to as Edgewood, the residence contained 33 rooms with ten bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and approximately 8,000 square feet of living space. Thank you for the explore. You always find such nice locations.
Too big. Who would need a house this size. It could only be used as a hotel. It must be why so many of these houses became derelict.
The staircase was enclosed some time after the house was built. The third floor staircase gives us an idea of how grand it once was. What a shame that salvage wasn't begun years ago on this place. I hope there is serious salvage done before it's demolished. I'm so glad you had Ruby with you to stop you from stepping into that third floor hole. There is still so much beauty left in that house. What a shame it would be if it's all destroyed. Thank you for saving the beauty with your camera. I wish I could put my arms around this place and give it a final hug.

I kinda wish more people would "steal" stuff from these amazing homes so they would live on forever. Because the beauty of the work they used to do isn't as practiced now. And it could be enjoyed by us !

I'm thinking that when this was converted in 1946, they took out the original front staircase, which would've had that keyhole window at the top of the 2nd floor. Even with all the butchering, it was still a grand house, thanks so much for focusing on the original architecture instead of the garbage on the floor. As always, a great video Kappy & Ruby!

What a house! Would have loved to see the downstairs banister before it was taken out and walled in. Especially when the one on the 3rd floor was so ornate! Pretty fancy servant's quarters! Loved the ladies cooling porch with the curved bench! Knew some Burkhardts when I lived there. I wonder...! Thanks Kappy and Ruby- you two take care! 💗

Wow, what an ostentatious display of wealth this house was. I've read a little about the original owners (thanks for providing the name, I love the history of these places), and Mrs. Burkhardt was quite the hostess, there are newspaper clippings describing her parties and the decor in some rooms. I'm surprised none of their children kept the house but maybe they couldn't afford it. Then the Depression hit and for sure no one could afford it.
Love the eye-shaped window, the third story turret room with the fireplace and ornate bench was a highlight for me. I would literally live in that room and never come out. Did you notice the heat pipes running under the bench to keep their tooshies warm? :) Say hi to Ruby and have a great weekend!
After my grandma passed away,we found among her things a newspaper clipping for my Dad’s fifth birthday party and who attended. This would have been in 1932. They were far from wealth. It was a different time and many type of notices were published in the paper. I just got a kick out of it and wished they had a pic of him at that age.

The burkhart Mansion in Ohio was once used as a nursing home ,,it houses many older people ,,it was a beautiful house in it,s time ,,my sister and bher husband used to paint the outside of these types of houses it was a lot of work but the pay was good ,,our aunt once Pender a southern style Mansion ,,spent a lot of time there when we was kid,s ,, later it too was demolished for apartments and we cried and cried ,, my house today is 85years old and I love it ,,thanks for showing this one ,, Happy house hunting

Wow that poor house has certainly been chopped and changed a lot. It must have been incredibly beautiful in its original state and its a travesty not to save it. Sadly no one seems to care about preserving historical places any more. The outside is magnificent if a bit spooky!!! Gill 🇬🇧

This house is not quite as old as our Victorian era house. Thankfully ours was maintained throughout the years. The home next door to us was empty for years and was finally bought by a couple who have invested well over a million dollars in restoration. These homes are expensive to maintain but worth it if you have the time and money and a love of the history of the period.

Hello Kappy, yes this beautiful old mansion was a nursing home in the 1980s. I was a young nurse and was working through an agency. I went there 2 nights for midnight shifts. It was the creepiest, scariest place I ever worked. There were patients all the way up to the 3rd floor. It was me and 2 Nurses Aids. It was called Queen City Nursing Home. The staircases are covered up with drywall. The one was just being closed in when I went there. It was a grand place in it's hay day. It was winter and that steam heat hissed and popped. The second your video came on I recognized it. The more you explored the more I recalled it. Oh Wow!!! Thank you for this video it brought back some fun memories. I have lived in Cincinnati my entire life. Cincinnati is so bad about tearing down it's history. How ironic you would video tape this mansion. And yes before anyone ask; the patients that slept on the top floors were able to ambulate on their own. Thank you so much Kappy!! Stay Safe out there! ☺️

Kappy I goggled some information on this beauty,complete with pictures and all the history of the home.Itvwas built in 1887,on 16 acres of land purchased by Mr.Burkhardt for 36,000 dollars.Mr.Burkhardt was born in Germany and was working for a furrier,and eventually wound up buying and owning the company he worked for,fabulous pictures and history in on goggle,and you can see the rooms you showed ,like the window seat that wraps around the window area in a turquoise color!
Once again, Ruby saves the day! I love how you are able to pick out the original details to the house, such as the mosaic floor in the entry and the details in the remaining woodwork. That also had to be the sketchiest looking fire escape I have ever seen. Thanks for another fantastic explore!

This is really a beautiful house. The detail in the woodwork and the Mosaic floors in the entrance. This is craftsmanship that you won't see when you buy a new home nowadays. It would be nice if this house could be saved.

Fortunate that you were able to film this before it was torn down (in October 2022). I found an article (link below) with a description of a gala celebration held there when the home was new and before times turned bad for the owner. Often sad that time moves on and so many things are lost. Thanks for all of these interesting videos.

Burkhardt, and in all the annals of Cincinnati’s social history, no reception has excelled in sumptuous appointment the one she gave yesterday to meet her niece, Miss Clara Erkenbrecher. The house of stone is built on the edge of one of the most picturesque woods in the Ohio valley and has a far-away view from every outlook.
The interior is of royal magnificence, with its rare painting and statuary pieces from the A. T. Stewart collection, bric-a-brac picked up at intervals in Europe, and an abundant wealth of the floral world filled the house with delicious perfume and added to the general gorgeous effect. The drawing-room, furnished in white and gold, was lavishly decorated with bowls of pink and white roses. The hall was gorgeous in red: halfway upstairs beneath a superb stained-glass window was a floral window seat in yellow tulips. The library across from the drawing-room was a picture in yellow. The high shelves of the mantel were heaped with the golden flowers of spring and across the top of the long book-case were massed the same lovely flowers in riotous profusion. The rooms above the stairs were greatly admired, especially the Moorish room, and Mr. Albert Erkenbrecher’s bachelor quarters on the third floor. A full orchestra was stationed near the stairs and discoursed the brightest and latest of operatic and dance music. But the prettiest place in all the house was the dining room, a dream in green and white, and everybody was lost in admiration. The mantel was banked high in white Roman hyacinths, tulips and maiden-hair hyacinths and maiden-hair ferns."

I remember when it was still occupied. My great grandparents lived down the street in 1900.

So glad to find this video. Stuck at home ill with covid at the moment & very bored. I think what makes the plaster mouldings so beautifull in these old buildings is that they are based on natural shapes from sea-shells, flowers & foliage. Same with some of the wood & metalwork.

I'm sure the original main floor staircase was closed in to meet code for a rest home. I'd love to see what's behind those walls? I just used my imagination throughout and this place is one of the most stunning places you have found. Great work Kappy!

It's an amazing house, but with all the modifications it's hard to tell the original layout. The plaster work is rich and tasteful, the wood carving beautiful. I'm thinking the top floor was originally servant's quarters, a nursery, and possibly a schoolroom. I guess it was turned into a nursing home/assisted living facility? Was there a kitchen? Great find guys! 👏 🙂

Another wonderful record of a very fine house. THANKS very, very much. It is incredible site. It is an outrage that Cincinnati has allowed this home to rot. It will be salvageable for perhaps another year, but the damage is so serious, the work will be a challenge for anyone who does not have pots of money to pay for it.

Cool explore of this old house👍🏻. Such a shame that it’s going to be torn down to make way for condos☹️. There was definitely a lot of old woodwork in this house that is worth saving but I’m not sure that’s going to happen☹️. I did like the wood paneling on some of the walls and the stair wood work was pretty amazing too👍🏻. I think that this Cincinnati historic commission really should have stepped in to help SAVE this ancient home. Good video as always and see you in the next one✌🏻.

At 1:29 the date on the house reads 1886. I hope they salvage what's left like the fireplaces, the huge round window and some of the trim before they demolish it. Thanks for sharing this gem!
They were built well , that’s why this beauty is still standing. All she needed was maintenance along the way.
Such a shame to see these beautiful heritage homes left to go like this. I understand that they are so expensive to renovate and the up keep is so expensive. I hope that whom ever demolishes it will at least saves all the best parts of it to put into other beautiful homes that are saved and renovated. What a great find. it does look like the staircase was grand but for whatever reason it looks like its been walled up. I don't thing the walls connected to the banister is original at all. Love it!
The stairs were enclosed to meet fire safety standards when it became a nursing home, along with the sprinkler system and the outside fire escapes.
