Stunning Grand Forgotten 150 year old Doctors Mansion Up North in New Jersey

- Beautiful Italianate Mansion built in the late 1800’s around 1865-1870 towards the end of the Civil War. The house has lived many lives and was actually a funeral home in the early 1900’s then eventually became a doctors office which closed its doors around 2007. Sadly this house has some major roof damage and will most likely end up torn down. Sad fate for a beautiful house. Glad to have documented it on film and pictures so it can live on in some way. 2007 isn't very long ago. It's amazing how quickly the house has deteriorated.

My Doctor when I was a kid had an office in a old house. It was a big beautiful Victorian.

Poor house, water in the basement is a death knell. The grey stuff on the upstairs floor where the ceiling collapsed is old insulation. Great video, hi Ruby!

There is somèthing unsettlling about seeing floorboards CURVING & then taking a dive towards the basement floor.

I have a feeling this Doctor was an OBGYN. Back in the day people had to pay out of pocket. I get a feeling he did everything there. Explains all the rooms and bathrooms. It must have been a beautiful family home before it was redone. Stay safe.
Nope, it was a funeral home. Surprised they didn't find anything coffins inside 😅
Kappy & Ruby, I am afraid the black mold, fungus, fetid water, and blackish grey asbestos would have left me in severe anaphylactic shock. Beautiful bones, but man that house is headed straight for eventual destruction. Honestly it reminds me of a Spanish Revival Medical Clinic I went to when I was between the ages of 6 to 17 in Long Beach, California. It was built sometime around 1910 to 1925, and was torn down decades ago. It had areally primitve intercom system, and eletrical system, but it was a cool old place. When I was around 6 we used to go to this huge mansion in Buena Park, Calfornia that was called Murray Manor, where the enire mansion and grounds were converted from a sprawling mansion near Beach Blvd, into a showcase furniture store. It was insane how beautiful that place must have been when it was built sometime around 1910 in the middle of the orange groves and dairy farms that existed prior to 1959. Some may not like it, but I love it when old houses are used for doctors’ offices. My old doctor’s was one. Just enough changed to be functional. The waiting room was in the front parlor with a fireplace. The kitchen was actually their lab. The bathroom was 1940s still with the tub. Old creaky hardwood floors. It was awesome. He passed but the building is still being used. Prob from 1880s or 90s. Check your DM. ❤
My doctors office was the same way. I always loved it. The original den was the waiting room. There were large pillars and built ins between the living room and the den. I still remember the stairs creaking as they went up and down from the offices upstairs.

That must have been a beautiful home! I have heard that homes on the coast that would have those towers, they were called widows peaks. After the wife’s husband went to sea, she would go there and watch for his return! Thanks Ruby and Kappy!

It's such a shame to see a beautiful house go to waste it was still active in 2007 why didn't they keep up the maintenance it's a beautiful house it could have became a beautiful apartment building or somebody is nice mansion beautiful

That was some scarey infrastructure in that basement (and elsewhere). Says it all why that once beautiful old house was abandoned. The cost of retrofitting a house that large, plus the maintenance, would be staggering. Shame though, before it was butchered, then neglected, it must've been a grand place. Thanks for the tour. Imagine turning a house like that into a funeral home! It was an odd sensation to get caught up in the beauty of the remaining features and then look out of the windows to see modern life right next door. Didn't seem to fit. Nice of you all to be concerned about the cat! 😺

I can tell you from experience that it will take a VERY LARGE pile of money to fix that house. The house we bought was not in that bad of shape but it has taken lots of money to fix it AND we bought the old stuff to fix it the way it was. We couldn't afford to pay someone so it has been 13 years and we are still not done. Good job on finding this one Kappy !!!!

What a great old house. I always loved houses with cupolas ever since I read a story about one as a child, although technically that is not a cupola as they are round in form. I wouldn't want the heating bill but with that much space and glamour the mansions surely could have been transformed into some really cool apartments. Great video!!

Wow. What a beauty! I’d love to know the history. I can just imagine back in the day when it probably was the grandest home in the county. Wouldn’t it be something if somebody sent photos to you of this mansion in her original state. My imagination goes wild. How wonderful it wasn’t tagged & destroyed either. Those fireplaces😮. That’s a wonderful old house. I’ve seen far worse get restored but it’s going to take someone with the mindset that they’re restoring it because it’s worthy and not as an investment. I hope that happens for this house. Thanks again for another fun house tour !!
Oh man, black mold and flooded basements are no joke. That caved in floor was super scary too. I know you guys know this, but please be careful. I would at least consider wearing masks in structures this bad with black mold. This house is so open to the elements, it's really just beyond repair now. It's such a shame it wasn't preserved. It's so unique and beautiful. The light plays out nicely throughout the house, really lovely. I'm glad at least it was utilized as a doctor's office even if that wasn't the original design. I can't help but be sad for this house, I know that sounds ridiculous, but, I love old houses and prefer to see them preserved if possible. You can still see how lovely she must have been in her prime. What an interesting life it has had; built from the ashes of the Civil War, ushering the dead on their journey as a funeral home, and restoring the sick (hopefully) to health again. A "circle of life" kind of place. Truly beautiful and bittersweet. Thanks for sharing, and be careful as you explore, guys! 🏚👟🎥

Hello from Scotland where there are some very interested abandoned places too. This is such an interesting former house and I think it was a Nurses Training School rather than a Doctors Office. The Helene Fuld Auxiliary is still in existence and they obviously moved out of that awkward for medical purposes use, lovely as it was. It is getting too far gone to save as it is built from wood and it already looks knackered. Enjoy your videos hugely. Keep safe.
Wow, that was quite the house. Can you imagine how big those rooms were before it was remodeled with the false walls and the staircase that goes nowhere? Can not belive some misguided soul painted those marble fireplaces, things like that make me want to cry. Love the room at the top of the house, so cool and a great view. Thank you for filming this beauty before its gone for good. You can almost see what the house may have looked like. The rooms with the small sinks looked like exam rooms. The fireplaces on the second floor I believe are art deco. The very top floor is called a widows walk. The wives would look out to sea waiting for their mariner to return. A lot of times they never made it back, hence the name widows walk. What a gem this was.
Hi there Kappy, and Miss Ruby, I love it when she’s with you. Wonder if the little town there would have old pictures of it from back in the day. Before Edison that wanted to meter the use of electricity, they had free energy before the 1800’s, the Antenna on the top was how homes received their power from the either of the planet. Great Orbs by the first Exit sign and basement.😊
This place was something special. I sure hope that it's salvaged before it gets any worse. There is still so much worth saving. The glass in that upstairs door was beautiful. I wonder what the view was like from the cupola when the house was first built. This place really was a-maze-ing.

I love those floor to ceiling windows, they let in so much natural light. Those doors with
the glass and the transom were all as you would say Kappy INCREDIBLE! My favorite
part was the tower on top so cool! Too bad the basement was flooded but it looked like
a spooky dungeon. I would have like to see this house before the remodeling. Must have
been a real beauty. It’s a dirty shame that this once beautiful house is just left to sit and
get flooded and rot away. Well both of you showed us a real Diamond in the Rough today.

There are so many people with the money to restore these beautiful houses, yet they will not donate a dime toward historic preservation. They instead build huge McMansions out of glued up wood chips, and spend on expensive cars that will be nothing but trouble.

Always so sad to see these beautiful buildings left to deteriorate. Back then they had no codes for railing heights so they really varied. I toured a Victorian mansion and was told women were to descend the stairs with rigid posture letting only their fingertips lightly graze the rail and never looking at their feet. Seems very dangerous. The were often very steep, too. This was a wonderful peek into the past. You were both very brave to venture upstairs and into the basement.
Those original details were absolutely incredible. The curved doorways and windows oh my. The fireplaces, Even the chimney was elegant. Loved the tower. I would loved to have seen it before all these poor renovations. Almost seems like there were also other businesses in there as well. Thank You as always. Hello Ruby. Stay safe

They probably blocked off rooms when made Drs office to make rooms smaller,wished could have seen original floor plan ,but still a good explore ,did Ruby get the cat some food and bring it back ,great job y'all did, the Dr made have stayed in the apartment part ,or maybe after Dr was there someone made two apartments there,great find and a good job as usual,so glad you do these old houses

They cupola on the top in an Italian term is called a belvedere if you can stand in it. The word in Italian means beautiful view.

Cool place. The more you guys walked thru it I started wondering if it may have also been a small teaching hospital at one point. The apartment like rooms upstairs could have been where the residents stayed or maybe even doctors and nurses on call. Then there was the old film reels, maybe teaching films? Lastly at the time mark 18:32, I had to go back and look again because at the ceiling it looked like there could have been a balcony area once. We have a super old hospital here that has just kept on expanding onto the original building and it has a staircase in the oldest part of the place that many don't realize because the entry point is kept locked and its in a really low traffic spot that has a stairwell that leads up to an old multipatient gjant room and a balcony that looks down into the original surgery room. From up there students could observe surgeries being performed.

Found it. I wanted to see what this home originally looked like. Old House Showcase has one titled Perfect Italianate Walkthrough. There is another one called touring 1860s Italian Villa in Tower Grove which features interior window shutters which when closed, fold up onto the sides of the windows.

Ohh please please someone buy this house and fix it up. It’s sooo beautiful.
This one is worth saving, it would take a month of gutting it down to frame, “20 dumpsters “. Then surgically cut it apart into crane size pieces. Label everything, then truck it off to a new home and reassemble this old growth forest - the lead paint and all the plumbing.

A lot of weird stuff done when they made it into a doctor's office. I just love it makes my heart ache to see it like this. This house would have beautiful when it was first built. Sadly for whatever reason it became a funeral home? That explains the basement and all the rooms down there. Then a doctors office? Where they started blocking off main features of the house. Poor thing now it just sits there abandoned and falling down. Thanks for sharing some pretty amazing features though. Have a great day

I wonder who owned the original part of the house? It’s so incredibly massive, and I love the tower (always wanted one of those)! It looks like it may have been used as a small hospital like structure, so I wonder if upstairs was where the staff stayed at night or if there was a single doctor whose family lived up there? Very intriguing to know the actual history behind this gem!
