I think the drifter will play a huge part in the war against The darkness. I think d3 will kick off with the major conflict between the guardians and the darkness. It seems like everything since curse of osiris has been us gathering allies that will be crucially necessary in the coming conflict, Osiris, rasputin, the weapons of the black armory, Mara sov, the drifter, perhaps going forward Calus and even Mithrax/the fallen and the nine and the darkness itself going into y3 of d2. Super exciting stuff thats been happening with the lore season. Thanks for the great videos Byf!
Steve Nuckles As long as drifter and his commentary remain and I get the option to kill Zavala’s annoying ass and go full on corrupted/Dark guardian consider this an insta-purchase.
Except Calus worships the darkness and he only revels so much so his people can celebrate before their eventual annihilation. And d3 probably won’t happen in a long time. I know this comment was from over a year ago, but I wanted to share my thoughts nonetheless.
I noticed something small in the tower card invitation. The music that plays in the background is an old destiny 1 song called 'departure'. I'm not sure if it was used intentionally since Orin is leaving the Drifter, or something. Edit: Was that byf clearing his throat at 3:59? lol
That departure thing surprisingly enough also played at the Spire social space back when Trials was a thing. It's now a random Unknown Space track that can randomly play between Reckoning runs and Invitation visits with the Huge Emissary.
Aidan Nash cause the ships being revealed to more and more people spell out doom for the people who will be immediately effected by them (namely us) and I feel that there is a reason why the ships have been revealed to the now three people (cayde, Mara, and the drifter.) because cayde died and he had the ships revealed to him, I believe that this foreshadows the inevitable death of the city, the vanguard, and the ways of the city that the vanguard so desperately tries to protect. And the fact that Mara and the drifter have been shown the ships spells two possible eventualities: 1 with Mara teaches, because she is an awoken, that we will need to walk the line between light and dark and try our best to embody the balance between light and dark that she has physically been incarnated as. And for the drifter, this represents the dead orbit style of eventuality: in which we leave the solar system behind and abandon the light and the dark as well, for the sake of survival.
Didn't we also have a vision when we fell from Ghaul's ship? You mentioned Drifter, Mara and Cayde had them but not us? We saw the pyramid ships and the people all crawling up in the dark water (like dying/ struggling) plus the eagle and the shard Does that mean we had these visions too?
Martyrs die for what they believe in. What does the Drifter believe in? The Drifter has made it abundantly clear that he does not trust the light. That he sees it as just as dangerous and horrifying as the darkness. The obvious assumption with his martyrdom is that he will die fighting the darkness, but what if that's not it at all? What if his death reveals the dangers of the Light?
I find it very interesting that the drifter might actually care about people I always saw him as a morally gray manipulative kinda guy without feelings
Biracial Hunter he’s kinda that ‘I care about nobody and nothing but me’ guy outwardly just to keep himself safe, no enemies of allies sorta deal, but actually does have a side.
Love the thumbnail pic. You have no idea how happy I was to see those ships. I went back in many times to take pics. I cannot wait for The End. The second Collapse is going to be absolute hell and many people are going to have to sacrifice their ways of life in order to save their species. We aren't ready. The Cabal struck us hard but normal people and Lightless Guardians were able to fight back because the Cabal don't have paracausal powers. Unlike the Cabal, the Darkness can only be stopped by two things, the Light and itself... At least I think we can kill Dark with Dark. IDK
“But if you already know [the future], how can I make a choice?” “Because you aren’t here to make the choice - you’ve already made it. You’re here to understand why you’ve made it.”
The drifter is such an interesting character. I really hope they don’t kill the Drifter, but if they do, they better do it the right way. Cayde is a perfect example, a character that is beloved but killed off in a respectful and right way. Regardless of drifter’s fate, I look forward to next week’s invitation. These invitations have been so interesting.
Dude please make more vids i love them and you inspire me to become a lore master and i have watched almost all of your videos and i still love the ones that i have already watched so thank you for giving me something to become and i hope that your channel becomes the greatest
Friend but man were they getting close and closer to almost lovers. Heart breaking for both of them, seeing how lonely they both are. Hence why The Drifter is all up on our dicks now, dude just wants a friend that isn't scared of the darkness.
André Filipe it’s a reference to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure part three. They also use the tarot cards, and The Hanged Man using reflective surfaces to kill his enemies
He can't be getting his powers from the Haul because in the cutscene with the shadow of yor about to kill him he summons that Taken Captain without it.
My first impression The traveler is here to assimilate us slowly and the drifter go wise to his plan and is using anything to free humanity and maybe his old wife possibly from the traveler. He got in with the dredgens because he thought the traveler would use the guardians it already has to stop anyone against the "light". Then he realized what it is to be dredgen and it now sickens him how far he went to the dark side or how far he needed to achieve his goal.
Fell in love with the lore after watching you and myelin’s content. Bought the first anthology on Bungie store and I still can’t believe how well things are written for this game. Actually fking nuts.
I agree, I think they actually made a mistake in the beginning, started it a week early, and then had to "break things" to have the last Invitations of the Nine and the last visit to the Queens Court take place on the same week. I do wonder though, will there be a change activated by getting to these last "cycles". 9 three week cycles, that's a long time for something repeating without any really change, when we know something has to change for the curse in the Dreaming City to break. And since it's been hinted at in game that for the Awoke, then time is actually longer... I really hope we don't have to wait til the Fall, or even longer, to finally see the curse change. Wish 15, the infamous shot of a Guardian riding a sparrow across the bridge we don't yet have access to. Come on, give us the chance to move forward already.
I have a question of my own. Assuming that Light and Darkness are universal constants, can we truly say that Guardians ever had the ability to make their own fate? Think about it, while Light Bearers do have some level of paracausal power, surely it doesn't exceed that of the very entity that gave us that power, i.e. The Traveler? It would be rather naive to assume that the Traveler is purely altruistic and gave us such power to use for ourselves. If such were the case then the other races that Traveler made contact with would be just like the natives of Sol who became Risen. Hell, the Traveler outright abandoned those races when the Darkness came for them. So who is to say that the Traveler hasn't hard locked the fate of every Light Touched individual in Sol? It seems more and more evident that ANYONE who has been affected by the Traveler's Light is being dragged into the upcoming conflict with the Darkness regardless of how they personally feel about the Traveler and the Guardians. Just like Mara Sov and the Awoken and just like the Drifter now, who has spent centuries avoiding these organizations and their battles. The Light may very well be just as insidious as the Dark, and has used its very own paracausal power to influence events in such a way to gain as many pawns to fight for the Traveler in it ongoing cosmic war.
Love all of your lore videos. Even if I dont play destiny as much as I used to, I still find them very informative to keep tabs on what's happening in the game. Thank you for everything you do. Per audicia ad astra!
I think that the idea that the Drifter has a predetermined fate, is just a mind game by the Nine, the Nine have always wanted to learn how to become matter, but don't know how, so they did some underhanded tactics such as letting the Red Legion capture the Last City and the Traveler. This shows that the Nine are willing to do anything to become matter. The Nine exist only because of Life, if Life did not exist, then the Nine wouldn't not exist. The Nine threatened their own existence by letting the Red Legion capture the Traveler and almost blow up the Sun which would have ceased all Life in Sol, which would mean the Nine would die as well, as - it seems - that the Nine are tied to the planets of Sol, if they are all wiped out, so are the Nine. If the Nine are willing to do that, then they sure as hell are willing to play mind games with the Drifter and make him think that he has a predetermined fate. If you can do anything, you leave your mind open to all ideas, and if an idea plants itself into your mind, you will find yourself stuck and think your can only do one thing.
16:27 I think what the Emmisary might be implying is that whatever choice he makes leads him straight back to the same end, regardless of what the choices are.
maybe he's already made his choice w/o realizing it, which is why it seems like the emissary is implying that his fate is now sealed and he can't go back on his actions. just a thought
I am no lore pro at all, but could it be that the last invitation is not talking about the final demise of the drifter, but more the final death of his role as rogue lightbearer? If what he truly believes in is survival, then the coming war might force him to sacrifice the whole personality as the drifter and his attitude of the lone wolf and fight for the traveller. To give up his so precious freedom and fight for the travellers dogma he hates
I feel somewhat conflicted morally because I chose the vanguard over the Drifter but at the same time I would still help fight to keep him alive and in some way I do trust him. I think the main reason I didn't choose him was because he was considering abandoning humanity in its entirety to live on and as someone who would rather die fighting for the city then hide I disagreed with that.
It could be that what she is implying is that he thinks he makes the decisions, but in reality he is driven by his cause, and that when the time comes, he will fight with us. He may try and act like he doesn't care, but in reality he cares more for the people of Sol then most of the characters in the whole of the Destiny Universe. I know people have been so-so about the Season of the Drifter from a gameplay stand point, but the lore we've gotten during this season has been some of the best Destiny has ever produced. I'm always so excited for Friday's now and I love it.
could the meaning of what the emissary said a while back about 3 people transcending themselves be elsie bray, eris morn, and the drifter. I dont remember the exact lines but Considering they were the ones to first use the darkness it makes me think. Also orin did mention something about an hourglass and could be referring to elsie since she can travel through time. I also wonder if the mention of the two woman could be mara and savathun. Maybe mara is in danger from her.
The Hanged Man is also indicative, when upright, that surrender or sacrifice can be a source of strength and power, that yielding can be the best way forward.
In philosophy, fate isn't a set thing. It's a cone of possibilities that becomes narrower for situations based off previous experiences. So the more experiences you have of a certain type the narrower your options are for certain situations. They're never nothing, but never completely open either
"The Gift is showing you what you must see. It is your fate." 'It' can be a bit flexible. It could be that it is the drifter's fate is to be given these visions, which made him rebel against what he sees and form Gambit and Gambit Prime, pushing him down the road he now chooses to walk.
When the Darkness ships showed up my jaw hit the floor. Week 9 is going to be something crazy and I have a feeling the coming weeks will bring some wild reveals from Bungie. This could get REALLY good folks.
Love the way the narrative is being drawn to the beginning of D3. The skills gained from Drifter could be the balance tipping in our favour or the corruption of the light. Drifter wants out he has told us to buy a deep space ship and go or join him on his planned run from the next collapse. His past experiences define his fear and cynicism of the Traveller Cult or at least that's how he sees it. The vanguard know shits gonna hit the fan too.
The bearer or bringer of light, is not always the good guy. Satan or the enemy, is the light bearer. Something to ponder. Darkness always comes first, then comes light.
About your question about free will, I belive its more about the journey than the destination, after all, we're all going to die eventually, that is our destiny, but it's our choices and experiences along the way that make us who we are, not some notion that dying is all we'll ever do
There's a saying I believe applies to Wu Ming: "One often meets their destiny on the very road they took to avoid it." I know whatever happens, he's gonna do it his way.
*I don't know if the "Formless One" is the equal of the "Traveller" but if there is a point to where our light doesn't do enough damage to the Darkness...then we may have to wield the Darkness in order to do some damage*
The heliopause literally means the point where the solar wind stops. Its the area far out beyond the kuiper belt where the light from our star reaches an ambient pressure against the interstellar gas, basically the boundary of the solar system.
Hm, well my theory on why the drifter is so important, is he's a lightbearer. Who manipulates the darkness to his will (if I recall properly) in a nonviolent way. He's a perfect bridge between light and dark, and he isn't aligned to anyone but himself, the tower, and the traveller don't have a say over him. And the darkness, and the nine (technically) don't have a say over him. Plus, in the idea that the nine have a fate set for the drifter, the nine have been wrong before right? Who's to say there right about the drifter and his fate?
I think I know why the drifter has a set fate. In a world full of being that can bend reality to thier will, what happens when their conjured reality is conflicted by another's conjured reality. If we are to view this in the ways of the hive, the stronger forces will take dominance. Another possibility is that they either cancel eachother out, or they both happen creating a form of duality of which one is decided apon the circumstances.
Hi Byf! Love your videos as always and really appreciate the time you spend on this for all of us. One question: you mention at 15:50 that the hole is where the Drifter summons his Taken forces. Forgive me if this is something I should know already but wasn’t the Drifter summoning Taken before receiving the gift? In the first Invitations meeting he summons a primeval to kill the Dregden and then the Nine give him the gift. Again my apologies if I’m way off here just wanted to run it by you. Thanks!
I just want to comment on what he said about free will and predestination. Yes, the Drifter still has free will, and predestination is also in play, this is because there are numerous future possibilities before all of, which depending on out actions may or may not happen. I would pose that the reason The Emissary said that the Drifter's fate is sealed, is not because he cannot influence his fate, and has not free will, but that she knows that even with the ability to change or influence his future like other guardians, he would still choose the path the visions are showing. And I would also say that it is precisely because of the visions he sees that she says his fate is sealed.
The Nine act kinda fatalistic. We've surprised them on occasions, mainly being if we side against Drifter. Maybe Drifter could surprise them as well. Maybe he won't turn out as a martyr/pawn and instead emerge as someone greater.
Lmao, excellent timing for the ads in this video byf. Got a good belly laugh and ROFL out of me. "And because of the gravity of this I'll just play it for you in it's entirety..... Delisio stuffed crust pizza is better than ever! Take back the crust!!!" 😂🤣🤣🍻
Hey we’re getting our last Invitation and Truth to Power lore piece on the same week due to a bug with the Xur bounty. Did Bungie cause the bug on purpose to make them line up?
The bug didn't cause them to line up. The bug didn't push any other invitations, it just caused us to not be able to finish it in its proper week. The following one went on as always intended
16:15 what if the haul is powered by taken energy? It could be that the haul is actually a remnants of oryx, maybe a part of his body or the runes that he supposedly destroyed?

He may try and act like he doesn't care, but in reality he cares more for the people of Sol then most of the characters in the whole of the Destiny Universe. I know people have been so-so about the Season of the Drifter from a gameplay stand point, but the lore we've gotten during this season has been some of the best Destiny has ever produced. I'm always so excited for Friday's now and I love it.

Me and my homie drifter on his ship promising to escape with us from the pyramid ships
ALRIGHT IMMA BOUTTA HEAD OUT
“Guardians make their own fate”
Remember that from the vault boys
Never did vault but i know that line too, bring it on
could the meaning of what the emissary said a while back about 3 people transcending themselves be elsie bray, eris morn, and the drifter. I dont remember the exact lines but Considering they were the ones to first use the darkness it makes me think. Also orin did mention something about an hourglass and could be referring to elsie since she can travel through time. I also wonder if the mention of the two woman could be mara and savathun. Maybe mara is in danger from her.
U so call “Guardians” fear the Dark, yet u all overlooked the true threat...
Diminishing returns. It is inevitable. It comes for all.
Soak it in coca cola
XXENOLOGY I’ll just go to Disney Exec and strip, only salvation from the wrath of DR

8:52 Guardians make their own fate
The Hanged Man is also indicative, when upright, that surrender or sacrifice can be a source of strength and power, that yielding can be the best way forward.
In philosophy, fate isn't a set thing. It's a cone of possibilities that becomes narrower for situations based off previous experiences. So the more experiences you have of a certain type the narrower your options are for certain situations.
They're never nothing, but never completely open either
"The Gift is showing you what you must see. It is your fate."
'It' can be a bit flexible.
My man Drifter just did the classic Nice Guy turn-around
Excellent video as always
The Drifters story is getting more and more interesting.

Byf, you looking forward to both the final entry in truth to power and 9th visit? Can't wait, loving this lore 😁😁
5:46 or maybe the calamitous event is a paracasually fueled warrior dabbing.
The mystery around those pyramids does a damn good job hyping them up, all the lore we seen about them even the small mentioned areas.
The heliopause literally means the point where the solar wind stops. Its the area far out beyond the kuiper belt where the light from our star reaches an ambient pressure against the interstellar gas, basically the boundary of the solar system.
Yes! Byf! Byf! Byf! Video lore master supreme!
I interpreted 'The Gift' as the Traveler's light personally
Same
So you know how the new enemies are theorized to be the Veil? Well the hammerhead description says "Smash through the veil"
And mother of Ada-1 gave us description of how they look like.
I think my heart skipped a beat when those Pyramids showed up again. This is getting exciting.
Thanks!
The intro from the last few videos seems very polished, did you get a new one or am I losing my mind
I love when plots become philosophical
Great vid as always❤️
How do we know that Cayde has visions from the Nine? Anybody have a video I can watch?
Are you going to do a full video on the invitation and explain them or put them in a playlist? Just curious
New video? Yes Please!

"The darkness is coming. It will strike hard and fast. We will need to be ready." But we won't be with all these nerfs!!
16:15 what if the haul is powered by taken energy? It could be that the haul is actually a remnants of oryx, maybe a part of his body or the runes that he supposedly destroyed?
