Perhaps what she said was the order of the DLC? The first DLC was Curse of Osiris and we know Osiris is now the master of the Infinite Forest. "The first, an hourglass counting down with infinite patience." The second DLC was Warmind. Rasputin is one of the most powerful human weapons in the Sol system and he had been mostly offline for centuries, until recently when the Guardian helped bring him back to full power. "The second, a forgotten blade sharpened anew." The third DLC was Forsaken and that's where the Drifter was introduced. He is obviously the third person she now refers to.
I like this because this implies that these beings have moved beyond the struggle between Light and Dark. Osiris guards against the Vex, no longer involving himself in the troubles of the City and it's enemies. And he doesn't do this by killing Vex- he has become like them, using his reflections to alter simulations. He fights Vex like a Vex. Rasputin has no equal, and will guard humanity (notably not the last city) on his own terms- not relying on the Traveler, and is evidently ready to turn on it if it becomes a threat. (I know the Traveler wasn't actually attacked, but I do feel that Rasputin somehow coerced it into staying when it would have abandoned us like the Eliksni) If turning on the Traveler means using Hive or Taken, I don't doubt he'd do it. EP is not just a culling, it's an experiment, not unlike the Trials or the Reckoning.
I think the blade sharpened anew might be Nokris, the forgotten son of Oryx. Blade being a reference to the sword logic, of course. And he transcends his design by mastering Necromancy and resurrection, which is in direct violation of the sword logic, which states that everything weak must die. But you may also be right with Rasputin
As a keen astronomer and Destiny player here's my take on what we know about the Universe already. Dark matter is estimated to make up ~27% of the Universe. Dark energy is ~62% and the stuff we and every thing we see is estimated to be only ~5%. Dark Matter and Dark Energy are NOT the same thing! The only thing they have in common is that we can not see (detect) them yet. Dark Matter It is believed that Dark Matter does not interact with light or more precisely, it does not interact with the electromagnectic force; this is why astronomers have labelled it dark. However scientists do believe Dark Matter intereacts with gravity and therefore it has mass. Basically, stars in the outer parts of the Milky Way were observed to be moving so fast that they should be able to escape our galaxy and fly away into intergalactic space. However they do not, they orbit the Mily Way just like our Sun does. This led astronomers to conclude that there must be something stopping the stars from escaping. They hypothesised that this something is extra mass and because there's extra mass, there's extra gravity keeping the stars in position. Astronomers call this extra mass Dark Matter. Dark Energy On the other hand, Dark Energy was introduced to explain observations that indicate that the Universe's expansion, from the time of the Big Bang, is speeding up. We don't know why the Universe's expansion is getting faster but astronomers have labelled the cause Dark Energy. Its super cool that Destiny lore is now delving into this unknown in astronomy. The fact that Dark Matter and a theoritical subset of it, Cold Dark Matter (CDM), are the Nine is really left field and something that I would have never have considered.
Exactly we have only speculation of dark forces in our universe it may exist it may not it may but remain hidden forget it may not but we continue to believe it does
Worth noting for clarification that even though photons have no mass, light follows the curvature of space time, so by warping space time via gravity, dark matter does have an effect on light, and this is in fact the strongest evidence we have for it. See: gravitational lensing around the bullet cluster that exceeds what we’d expect from the observable matter therein.
Couldnt the hourglass and the sword be Osiris and Toland? Both of the light but use dark techniques. Both like the drifter, heretics in their own time.

When I first heard the emissary describe the "forgotten blade forged anew" I immediately thought of Mara Sov. She was perceived to be dead but was plotting from the ascendant realm and has returned to seek revenge. Not only that, but she was visited by an emissary in her court. That alone led me to believe she is one of the three. Plus being an Awoken, forged from both the Darkness and the Light, she would be the closest to an "elemental balance" than many other possible choices. Correct me if I'm wrong but that was my first impression.
I’m thinking it’s Xivu Arath, Oryx’s sister. In the hive pantheon. She’s the knight or the blade in the pantheon with Oryx as the king and Savathûn as the mother. She left the affairs of Oryx and Savathûn after she felt Oryx was constraining her, making her “forgotten.” After Oryx’s death, she had been getting involved again and her forces are briefly seen in the dreaming city. She’s also messing with taken, trying to control them. If she obtained the ability to take or at least control them, she could be “forged anew” with new powers. Has anyone considered that Gambit Prime, the reason three guardians are permanently dead, is a test of might for the oncoming war between the Traveler and the Darkness. The guardians are not as powerful as the Traveler and even the Traveler was severely injured by the battle.

I'd imagine the IX truly are Dark Matter, but they 'take', so-to-speak, things to represent them, in groups of nine (9 Awoken, 9 Ghosts, 9 Jovians etc.).
Question: I’m not super versed in the lore, so I could be totally off base, but could Osiris and Rasputin be the two the Emissary spoke of? “Infinite patience” reminds me of Osiris’s dedication to the Infinite Forest, and Rasputin is very much an old knife sharpened anew. Rasputin definitely outgrew his original programming to help humanity in his own way (much like Drifter), and it could be argued that Osiris is the same, I think. Would love to hear thoughts on this.

hmm, _an hourglass counting down with infinite patience_ ...the use of infinite and reference to time in general makes me think this is talking about Osiris? I'm almost positive that there are lore cards which talk about Osiris, Mara Sov and Eris meeting with the Nine on multiple occasions. Who knows maybe it actually refers to Mara Sov given we've physically seen Orin interact with her. All three of these characters do not rely on the light or darkness solely. _a forgotten blade sharpened anew_ and the title "Quria Blade Transform" seem synonymous to me. Would they make it this obvious? I have no clue but to me a Vex Hydra who gets taken and then forced against its own will to orchestrate a curse in the Dreaming City through the help of a Hive God is pretty compelling stuff - an "anomaly" per say? Especially, since this character is trying to break free from Savathun to begin with by communicating that with us Guardians. All of this is super interesting!! I hope this all gets answered.
My personal guesses on the two mentioned is Mara Sov (her final words to the Emissary were that she has shown ample Patience, that can't be an accidental line) And second, Mithrax the Forsaken. He's a Taken captain striving to overcome the past of his race, and become more than anyone he has ever known could have become.
What better way to hide your meaning then to in conversation spoken in metaphors to say something literal. What if the sword that transcended it's design it very literally a sword. More specifically the Taken King's sword we took and purified. Now if I remember the lore correctly, even though we purified it, it still had some dark properties. It still had teeth. And what if the hourglass keeping infinite time is just the infinite forest. Used as a weapon by the vex to simulate, learn and conquer. It's now being used by us and Osiris to impede their plans.
WE'RE FINALLY GETTING ANSWERS. Also, it seems like truly embracing your opposite is how one transcends. A guardian who follows the sword logic while fighting for the light, for example.
I think the 9 are the 9 members of the Exodus Green that never showed up in the Distillery with the Awoken. The hourglass is probably the Vex and the blade is probably Savathun.
Kabir is the hour glass, creating a shield of light to destroy the Vex, and the Iron Lord is the sharpened sword who shaped the crucible, destroyed Siva, and became the last warlord alive.

I think "the shadow" is a part of the trial, perhaps a plant by The Nine to see how the Drifter will respond under pressure; will he return to the dark or stay in the middle. The forgotten blade I believe to be Uldron, still considering who the hourglass is...
In terms of the Nine depending on material life in the universe/sol system to “live”, I think that a neat story Idea would be to have the Nine be able to, in a way, tie their existence to certain beings/species/systems. The Nine would have invested themselves in the sol system because it is where the light and dark are sort of converging (drifter, shadows of yor, awoken, etc.)

I actually lean towards the theory that Livinia was bamboozled by Dul Incara (or however you spell it) and she's not interacting with the Nine at all. As far as the hour glass... There's many options there. Mara Sov, Osiris, The Exo Stranger... The forgotten blade sharpened anew could be Rasputin but it could also be Uldren Sov or someone/something we haven't encountered yet. Who knows, maybe Saint-14 is secretly waging war somewhere and waiting for the time to pounce. I'll be honest though. Drifter may have been the one the Nine are highlighting, but they could be speaking about Shin/Vale. And they are using the Drifter to possibly siphon off guardians light into their own realm to assist in their plans to break free. I freaking love all this new lore. It's just great. I feel the figure of infinite patience is Mara, and the Blade sharpened anew is uldren. Both are awoken (light and dark mixed) and Mara always talks about her many plans, and uldren just got reborn as a guardiann
The first is most likely Osiris, with how he's overcome the Vex in the Infinite Forest. The second one could be Oryx, because he did overcome the hardships during his life as a proto Hive. He did not let the Traveler extinct his species, instead, he turned to the Worm Gods and Darkness for power. In that sense, he "sharpened anew". Sure it isn't balance, but he later did look to overthrow Akka, who fed off his symbiotic worm. He killed him, and went directly to the Darkness for answers, as he's the only one we know of to commune directly with the Darkness. Also, we know Calus is supposed to be a master in both Light and Dark, so he may be the blade, though we don't fully know his struggle in obtaining that knowledge (unless it's already mentioned, I haven't read/listened to his lore yet)
If all you ever played was year one destiny 1, you'd never have guessed this universe had so much of a story to tell. I love how much they found their voice.
I think you're misinterpreting what they mean by "design" drifter is a Guardian who uses the darkness and the light and that's against the design of a guardian. It's not that merely using both is some sort of inherent trancendence but moreso that he shook off the shackles of what he was "designed" to do. To the point of who the other two are, I think we should look at the most recent dlcs prior to forsaken. The hourglass is Osiris, he's been in the infinite forest for what... a few thousand millenia? That requires an INFINITE amount of patience eh? And the sword? Xol. He became The Whisper of the Worm through a method deemed as heresy to the hive, by giving in to the strength of the Guardians and letting death take him, defying the sword logic, or at least reinterpreting it in order to transcend. Pretty cut and dry to me.

Ozilus and the whole splinter group thing explains all the bad stuff we hear about the shadows in the Annor cards. Those were the bad guys my boi shin is hunting, his shadows are a lot smaller and a lot more pure than those filthy darkness worshipers. I wouldn’t mind puttin a thorn into one of them skulls.
Yeah, it makes the most sense. Aunor said that the only way a guardian can be killed is with a devourer bullet and the only reason shin seems to be able to kill guardians is because maybe he has the original thorn? Idk.
Theory: Queen Mara Sov is the time glass. She desires nothing and knows what needs to come will come in due time. We encountered her during an interaction with the emissary which could’ve been right after her “trial”. Prince Uldren is the hidden sword (this is much more a shot in the dark). Uldren has been deep in the darkness as we experienced in forsaken and is now resurrected as a guardian, empowered by the light from the traveler. This would qualify with your theory of transcending their being or whatever. No one knows where he may be, thus “hidden” and he often did the queens dirty work making him the “sword” This is just my two-cents in a prediction. Rebuttal as you will or may this spark ideas.
Xur feels like he's the hourglass. Hourglass tracks a shorter span of time. Like, an hour. When it fully empties, you flip it to count down again. Xur's entire purpose is to count down time between his appearances. He was the nine's "first experiment"
I've honestly burnt out from playing, but Byf, you still keep me connected, because the story, as fractured as it is in the gameplay, is still the reason I play. You do an outstanding job just bringing it to the forefront and that is why I watch. Thank you!
It's so great to see everyone so excited about this new lore. I'm loving the fact that we don't have answers yet, and get to hypothesize. I believe the two that have transcended their designs would be Osiris as it discusses time. Then Oryx as it mentions swords.
Good point! And why I'm assuming the entire "Arena" aspect of gambit exists. He is, after all, looking out for number 1 and his personal safety. It's sort of a Taken Jurassic Park and he is John Hammond. We all know what happens there!

Silent dust slowly spinning into the cores of worlds, plus the fact that there's nine of them, makes me think the lore card could be an analogy for the formation of the planets. Or at least related somehow

I’ve personally got a feel that each of the “transcended” are lightbearers similar to the drifter. It would make sense that the those the nine like are earthlings, they seem to rely on our existence to further their own. Drifter may not be a guardian but he is still touched by the traveler. Therefore I present my two theories: Osiris and Toland. Osiris personally seems to fit due to the reference to the infinite, Osiris uses that which is interpreted as “darkness” through the vex tech of the Infinite Forest, therefore making that balance. Toland to me makes sense because of how he preaches on the sword logic and has entirely ascended himself. We see him throughout the ascendant plane, a place he could only get through the sword logic which sharpened him anew. He seems now to work either for the ascendants or for the darkness, seemingly betraying his calling to light in favor of the inherent balance the sword logic requires.
Hi Byf ! I'm fairly new to the Destiny community, but going down the rabbit hole was too easy, and with the Season of the Worthy lore coming out in the trials I was shown your content. My god there is a ton of stuff to watch and understand. Love it. I wanted to submit my own theory. The Hourglass counting down with infinite patience : To me, the very subject of time brings two possibilities: Osiris or the Vex. Osiris would be tough to justify, but the Vex are far more simple to explain. The hourglass, just like any goblin, is and isnt what we see. The hourglass is the instrument made of two round ends with sand going from one to the other to know that a specific amount of time has passed, but the symbolic part of it is the time inside the instrument. The sand is, symbolically, the flow of time. The vex share the same treatment. Where we see a goblin, a minotaur or even a harpy, what we are looking at is only a body of silica. The real vex is the radiolarian fluid inside, like the sand for the hourglass. The forgotten Blade sharpened anew: As you mentioned in this video, when we think of a blade, we think of the Hive. However, it is more literal to me. Not that it is a literal blade, but an ancient weapon. A weapon forgotten after the wars it fought and that is now returning. Sharpened anew to fight again, or sharpened anew for its role in the events to come has totally changed. An AI, man-made superweapon, that would have been forgotten by those who never seen more to it than its potential for destruction, never more than a weapon, never more than a blade. When I heard that description for the first time I immediately remembered this now-famous speech : "The Bray family shaped me to be an all-seeing savior... while your vanguard sought to wield me as a PRIMITIVE WEAPON... but today that ends... and I DEFINE THE REALITY of my own existence... My sight will stretch to the edge of this system and beyond... Never again will a threat go unseen... From this day forward I will defend humanity on my own terms... I am Rasputin... guardian of all I survey... I have no equal." So, my theory is that the Vex and Rasputin elevated themselves above their first design.
Hourglass with infinite patience could be Osiris and the Blade could refer to Calus given his history and the next season is depicted with a blade. Really rough guesses but just thinking.
The two parties who transcended the design are the Traveler and the Darkness? The Traveler is the hourglass and the Darkness is the blade? That's what I got out of it anyway, fairly descriptive of them I thought.
That was my first thought too. I even felt the hourglass analogy somewhat literal in that Ghosts could be considered the sands of the traveler. Having said that.. I would wonder if Uldrin is supposed to be represented by one of these ideas instead.
Fun fact the emissary is also Karliah the nightingale out of Skyrim and in case u were wondering the voice actors called Moria Quirk don’t know about u but this blew my mind when I figured it out 🤯🤯

He transended his original design of a guardian by learning how to use the Vex's own tech against them. Also he ascended past his role of the Vanguard Warlock Leader in the process. "A forgotten blade sharpened anew" Prehaps to be taken in the literal sense (since she just out right calls Drifter by his old prefix with no riddle). Could be talking about Oryx's Sword "WillBreaker" its been awhile since that so it could be considered forgotten. And we forged a new blade for it changing it's original purpose of fulfilling the Sword Logic for the darkness to a weapon to be wielded for the light. -Just my thoughts :)
I think Atheon is the hourglass counting down infinitely that transcended it’s design. Here’s why: Atheon was a vex machine/creature, but it defied all of the beliefs and values of the Vex, and so it was “exiled” in a way. It transcended it’s design by being and believing what no Vex was ever meant to, and becoming something different and unique. Just my thoughts, feel free to tell me if I made some mistakes or just to add on to my thoughts.

Returning to this now that Witch Queen is on the way. Could the old blade sharpened anew be Savathun now that we know that Savathun is weilding both light and dark and that has been her aim from the beginning? Maybe even figuring it out as early as the Warmind expansion when she learns necromancy from Nokris and is possibly using that to revive dead ghosts? She is old and a hive god so that fits the "old blade" description, and the "sharpened anew" could refer to her shifting attitude toward the sword logic and darkness since the death of Oryx being what "sharpens her anew."
Definitely agree with the Hourglass being Savathun due to her crazy blackhole power generator experiment with the dreaming city. However, I think the Blade Sharpened Anew, is Quria, Blade Transformed, as they have been playing an interesting part by pretending to be other characters so they can slip us intelligence about what Savathun is doing and may play an integral part in taking her down and freeing the dreaming city from the time loop before Savathun becomes to powerful.

Byf. I think you might be overthinking this one. The hourglass fits Mara(has had many interactions with the Nine) and the Blade sharpened anew fits Eris( She was forgotten in the Hellmouth but made it out and began the process of becoming something else other than a Guardian... and just like Mara, has directly conversated with the Nine). Do I know this as fact? No but it's the best lead out there by far. P.S for those saying Osiris I could get behind that as he has technically transcended his design by embracing the use of Vex methods and making them his own. If it is Osiris, I'd then say the Blade is Toland.
I love this lore, but I always remember the Yang Liwei generational ship during the collapse ,and lore that said all went to the distributary to become awoken. All crew were accounted for, except for nine individuals who did not become awoken. I guess they took a side?
Infinite patience hourglass reminds me of Mara, she had no (or limited) desires because she knew she would get what she wanted eventually. The Nine did release Skolas to cripple the Reef and bring the Awoken and earth-life/guardians closer together. Perhaps they are attempting the same thing with the Drifter. Less certain about the sword annewly sharpened. Perhaps Xol? Despite being ‘of the dark’ he now assists guardians by being a terribly broken heavy weapon... I will agree, ‘sword’ really forces the Hive character. Also side note, the Drifter blatantly says, don’t trust the Nine. So, there’s that too. Regardless, Xur bring weekly lore! in addition to more relevant exotics is great. Hopefully I’ll finally get that Cerberus+1 auto.
th3 Sosa Praedyth didn’t have this independence from light or darkness as the Drifter seems to have. (I would argue Mara/awoken are also independent/equal concerning light/darkness) Also I’m pretty certain there was a mission in D1 where we freed his spirit or something. Also infinite patience doesn’t strike me as someone who got stuck somewhere. Regardless the way it is said by the Emissary makes me think these two transcendors are still alive/transcending.
So, after binging all your videos, then doing it again, I have a theory as to who one of the Nine are talking about- and it makes sense in reference to a few lorebooks brought up. I believe that one is Mara Sov. "An hourglass with infinite patience counting down." - Allows herself to die just to wait an untold amount of time. - Becomes aware of the Bomb Logic (The 'counting down' part clued me to this.) - Continues to work against the darkness while applying said logic. Since it's just a theory take it as you will, but Mara makes the most sense to me. As for the Sword Sharpened Anew it would be neat if it involved Taox. At one point in the Splicer campaign Mithrax states something close to the line of "Perhaps we could have peace amongst all races... even Hive." Which makes me wonder if he's actually more aware of the history of the Hive from all his time spent Titan.
I mean, was it though? Do we really know what the Void is? maybe Void power is the energy of the dark space that the Nine exist in, and the effects of Dark Matter are just mass-shadows of the Void on normal space.
The number "9" is the last number in a "base 10" system which is the last and limit of all that is. Nine is a number which has many interesting qualities that other number do not have and has been used to hold a hidden code that affects every being. It is encoded into the construction of our universe... @Conor Vienneau elsie bray (AKA the stranger) didn't show up for almost 3 years before she became relevant again rasputin was just fully reactivated, and it seens he has some interesting views on how to accomplish his goals, a machine that can effectively make a choice, that can be considered transcendence from it's design i do think rasputin is one of the weaker candidates though as for quria, it hasn't been talked about enough and thus we need to talk about it, if we get a savathun expasion after penumbra then i'm 100% certain quria would factor in and thus we need to know more about it and a smaller scale expasion such as joker's wild would be a good starting point for that
If we narrow the “transcend their design” definition a little bit, Drifter was designed to be a guardian of the Light, yet found balance through an opposing force, in this case the taken. There are two other guardians who may fit this. First is Osiris, with the Vex (the infinite hourglass). The second would be Toland, with the hive (sword sharpened anew, which also works because he himself was destroyed and brought back anew as the TolandBall). The only other theory I have is that the first could be Praedyth

Perhaps what she said was the order of the DLC? The first DLC was Curse of Osiris and we know Osiris is now the master of the Infinite Forest.

The second DLC was Warmind. Rasputin is one of the most powerful human weapons in the Sol system and he had been mostly offline for centuries, until recently when the Guardian helped bring him back to full power.

The third DLC was Forsaken and that's where the Drifter was introduced. He is obviously the third person she now refers to.
I thought the first was referencing the vex's power over time and the second referencing the hive and their sword logic
I like this because this implies that these beings have moved beyond the struggle between Light and Dark. Osiris guards against the Vex, no longer involving himself in the troubles of the City and it's enemies. And he doesn't do this by killing Vex- he has become like them, using his reflections to alter simulations. He fights Vex like a Vex.
Rasputin has no equal, and will guard humanity (notably not the last city) on his own terms- not relying on the Traveler, and is evidently ready to turn on it if it becomes a threat. (I know the Traveler wasn't actually attacked, but I do feel that Rasputin somehow coerced it into staying when it would have abandoned us like the Eliksni) If turning on the Traveler means using Hive or Taken, I don't doubt he'd do it. EP is not just a culling, it's an experiment, not unlike the Trials or the Reckoning.

I think the blade sharpened anew might be Nokris, the forgotten son of Oryx. Blade being a reference to the sword logic, of course. And he transcends his design by mastering Necromancy and resurrection, which is in direct violation of the sword logic, which states that everything weak must die. But you may also be right with Rasputin

As a keen astronomer and Destiny player here's my take on what we know about the Universe already.
Dark matter is estimated to make up ~27% of the Universe. Dark energy is ~62% and the stuff we and every thing we see is estimated to be only ~5%. Dark Matter and Dark Energy are NOT the same thing! The only thing they have in common is that we can not see (detect) them yet.
Dark Matter
It is believed that Dark Matter does not interact with light or more precisely, it does not interact with the electromagnectic force; this is why astronomers have labelled it dark. However scientists do believe Dark Matter intereacts with gravity and therefore it has mass. Basically, stars in the outer parts of the Milky Way were observed to be moving so fast that they should be able to escape our galaxy and fly away into intergalactic space. However they do not, they orbit the Mily Way just like our Sun does. This led astronomers to conclude that there must be something stopping the stars from escaping. They hypothesised that this something is extra mass and because there's extra mass, there's extra gravity keeping the stars in position. Astronomers call this extra mass Dark Matter.
Dark Energy
On the other hand, Dark Energy was introduced to explain observations that indicate that the Universe's expansion, from the time of the Big Bang, is speeding up. We don't know why the Universe's expansion is getting faster but astronomers have labelled the cause Dark Energy.
Its super cool that Destiny lore is now delving into this unknown in astronomy. The fact that Dark Matter and a theoritical subset of it, Cold Dark Matter (CDM), are the Nine is really left field and something that I would have never have considered.

When I first heard the emissary describe the "forgotten blade forged anew" I immediately thought of Mara Sov.
She was perceived to be dead but was plotting from the ascendant realm and has returned to seek revenge.
Not only that, but she was visited by an emissary in her court. That alone led me to believe she is one of the three.
Plus being an Awoken, forged from both the Darkness and the Light, she would be the closest to an "elemental balance" than many other possible choices.

I’m thinking it’s Xivu Arath, Oryx’s sister. In the hive pantheon. She’s the knight or the blade in the pantheon with Oryx as the king and Savathûn as the mother. She left the affairs of Oryx and Savathûn after she felt Oryx was constraining her, making her “forgotten.” After Oryx’s death, she had been getting involved again and her forces are briefly seen in the dreaming city. She’s also messing with taken, trying to control them. If she obtained the ability to take or at least control them, she could be “forged anew” with new powers.

Has anyone considered that Gambit Prime, the reason three guardians are permanently dead, is a test of might for the oncoming war between the Traveler and the Darkness. The guardians are not as powerful as the Traveler and even the Traveler was severely injured by the battle.

Question: I’m not super versed in the lore, so I could be totally off base, but could Osiris and Rasputin be the two the Emissary spoke of? “Infinite patience” reminds me of Osiris’s dedication to the Infinite Forest, and Rasputin is very much an old knife sharpened anew. Rasputin definitely outgrew his original programming to help humanity in his own way (much like Drifter), and it could be argued that Osiris is the same, I think.

I'm almost positive that there are lore cards which talk about Osiris, Mara Sov and Eris meeting with the Nine on multiple occasions. Who knows maybe it actually refers to Mara Sov given we've physically seen Orin interact with her. All three of these characters do not rely on the light or darkness solely.

I have no clue but to me a Vex Hydra who gets taken and then forced against its own will to orchestrate a curse in the Dreaming City through the help of a Hive God is pretty compelling stuff - an "anomaly" per say? Especially, since this character is trying to break free from Savathun to begin with by communicating that with us Guardians.

What if the sword that transcended it's design it very literally a sword. More specifically the Taken King's sword we took and purified.
Now if I remember the lore correctly, even though we purified it, it still had some dark properties. It still had teeth.
And what if the hourglass keeping infinite time is just the infinite forest. Used as a weapon by the vex to simulate, learn and conquer. It's now being used by us and Osiris to impede their plans.

Kabir is the hour glass, creating a shield of light to destroy the Vex, and the Iron Lord is the sharpened sword who shaped the crucible, destroyed Siva, and became the last warlord alive.

Shes depicted in the lore as someone working and wavering between the light and the dark with incredible patience. Uldren has been sharpened a new in his rebirth and has held both light and dark.
Additionally in one of the visits with Mara the Emissary was there briefly.

In terms of the Nine depending on material life in the universe/sol system to “live”, I think that a neat story Idea would be to have the Nine be able to, in a way, tie their existence to certain beings/species/systems. The Nine would have invested themselves in the sol system because it is where the light and dark are sort of converging (drifter, shadows of yor, awoken, etc.)

The forgotten blade sharpened anew could be Rasputin but it could also be Uldren Sov or someone/something we haven't encountered yet. Who knows, maybe Saint-14 is secretly waging war somewhere and waiting for the time to pounce.
I'll be honest though. Drifter may have been the one the Nine are highlighting, but they could be speaking about Shin/Vale. And they are using the Drifter to possibly siphon off guardians light into their own realm to assist in their plans to break free.

The first is most likely Osiris, with how he's overcome the Vex in the Infinite Forest. The second one could be Oryx, because he did overcome the hardships during his life as a proto Hive. He did not let the Traveler extinct his species, instead, he turned to the Worm Gods and Darkness for power. In that sense, he "sharpened anew". Sure it isn't balance, but he later did look to overthrow Akka, who fed off his symbiotic worm. He killed him, and went directly to the Darkness for answers, as he's the only one we know of to commune directly with the Darkness.
Also, we know Calus is supposed to be a master in both Light and Dark, so he may be the blade, though we don't fully know his struggle in obtaining that knowledge (unless it's already mentioned, I haven't read/listened to his lore yet)

If all you ever played was year one destiny 1, you'd never have guessed this universe had so much of a story to tell. I love how much they found their voice.
I think you're misinterpreting what they mean by "design" drifter is a Guardian who uses the darkness and the light and that's against the design of a guardian. It's not that merely using both is some sort of inherent trancendence but moreso that he shook off the shackles of what he was "designed" to do. To the point of who the other two are, I think we should look at the most recent dlcs prior to forsaken. The hourglass is Osiris, he's been in the infinite forest for what... a few thousand millenia? That requires an INFINITE amount of patience eh? And the sword? Xol. He became The Whisper of the Worm through a method deemed as heresy to the hive, by giving in to the strength of the Guardians and letting death take him, defying the sword logic, or at least reinterpreting it in order to transcend. Pretty cut and dry to me.

Theory: Queen Mara Sov is the time glass. She desires nothing and knows what needs to come will come in due time. We encountered her during an interaction with the emissary which could’ve been right after her “trial”.
Prince Uldren is the hidden sword (this is much more a shot in the dark). Uldren has been deep in the darkness as we experienced in forsaken and is now resurrected as a guardian, empowered by the light from the traveler. This would qualify with your theory of transcending their being or whatever. No one knows where he may be, thus “hidden” and he often did the queens dirty work making him the “sword”

I've honestly burnt out from playing, but Byf, you still keep me connected, because the story, as fractured as it is in the gameplay, is still the reason I play. You do an outstanding job just bringing it to the forefront and that is why I watch. Thank you!
It's so great to see everyone so excited about this new lore. I'm loving the fact that we don't have answers yet, and get to hypothesize. I believe the two that have transcended their designs would be Osiris as it discusses time. Then Oryx as it mentions swords.

Good point! And why I'm assuming the entire "Arena" aspect of gambit exists. He is, after all, looking out for number 1 and his personal safety. It's sort of a Taken Jurassic Park and he is John Hammond. We all know what happens there!

Silent dust slowly spinning into the cores of worlds, plus the fact that there's nine of them, makes me think the lore card could be an analogy for the formation of the planets. Or at least related somehow

I’ve personally got a feel that each of the “transcended” are lightbearers similar to the drifter. It would make sense that the those the nine like are earthlings, they seem to rely on our existence to further their own. Drifter may not be a guardian but he is still touched by the traveler. Therefore I present my two theories: Osiris and Toland.
Osiris personally seems to fit due to the reference to the infinite, Osiris uses that which is interpreted as “darkness” through the vex tech of the Infinite Forest, therefore making that balance.
Toland to me makes sense because of how he preaches on the sword logic and has entirely ascended himself. We see him throughout the ascendant plane, a place he could only get through the sword logic which sharpened him anew. He seems now to work either for the ascendants or for the darkness, seemingly betraying his calling to light in favor of the inherent balance the sword logic requires.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the narrative and lore so far it's absolutely fantastic I really hope they keep this up

Hi Byf ! I'm fairly new to the Destiny community, but going down the rabbit hole was too easy, and with the Season of the Worthy lore coming out in the trials I was shown your content. My god there is a ton of stuff to watch and understand. Love it. I wanted to submit my own theory.

To me, the very subject of time brings two possibilities: Osiris or the Vex. Osiris would be tough to justify, but the Vex are far more simple to explain. The hourglass, just like any goblin, is and isnt what we see. The hourglass is the instrument made of two round ends with sand going from one to the other to know that a specific amount of time has passed, but the symbolic part of it is the time inside the instrument. The sand is, symbolically, the flow of time. The vex share the same treatment. Where we see a goblin, a minotaur or even a harpy, what we are looking at is only a body of silica. The real vex is the radiolarian fluid inside, like the sand for the hourglass.
The forgotten Blade sharpened anew:
As you mentioned in this video, when we think of a blade, we think of the Hive. However, it is more literal to me. Not that it is a literal blade, but an ancient weapon. A weapon forgotten after the wars it fought and that is now returning. Sharpened anew to fight again, or sharpened anew for its role in the events to come has totally changed. An AI, man-made superweapon, that would have been forgotten by those who never seen more to it than its potential for destruction, never more than a weapon, never more than a blade. When I heard that description for the first time I immediately remembered this now-famous speech :
"The Bray family shaped me to be an all-seeing savior... while your vanguard sought to wield me as a PRIMITIVE WEAPON... but today that ends... and I DEFINE THE REALITY of my own existence... My sight will stretch to the edge of this system and beyond... Never again will a threat go unseen... From this day forward I will defend humanity on my own terms... I am Rasputin... guardian of all I survey... I have no equal."
So, my theory is that the Vex and Rasputin elevated themselves above their first design.
Hourglass with infinite patience could be Osiris and the Blade could refer to Calus given his history and the next season is depicted with a blade. Really rough guesses but just thinking.
The two parties who transcended the design are the Traveler and the Darkness? The Traveler is the hourglass and the Darkness is the blade? That's what I got out of it anyway, fairly descriptive of them I thought.
That's really cool, though comparing Drifter to two paracausal forces is a bit of a stretch.
It is more likely that the two are agents of either side respectively.

That was my first thought too. I even felt the hourglass analogy somewhat literal in that Ghosts could be considered the sands of the traveler. Having said that.. I would wonder if Uldrin is supposed to be represented by one of these ideas instead.

by learning how to use the Vex's own tech against them. Also he ascended past his role of the Vanguard Warlock Leader in the process.

Prehaps to be taken in the literal sense (since she just out right calls Drifter by his old prefix with no riddle). Could be talking about Oryx's Sword "WillBreaker" its been awhile since that so it could be considered forgotten. And we forged a new blade for it changing it's original purpose of fulfilling the Sword Logic for the darkness to a weapon to be wielded for the light.

I think Atheon is the hourglass counting down infinitely that transcended it’s design. Here’s why:
Atheon was a vex machine/creature, but it defied all of the beliefs and values of the Vex, and so it was “exiled” in a way. It transcended it’s design by being and believing what no Vex was ever meant to, and becoming something different and unique.
Just my thoughts, feel free to tell me if I made some mistakes or just to add on to my thoughts.

Returning to this now that Witch Queen is on the way. Could the old blade sharpened anew be Savathun now that we know that Savathun is weilding both light and dark and that has been her aim from the beginning? Maybe even figuring it out as early as the Warmind expansion when she learns necromancy from Nokris and is possibly using that to revive dead ghosts? She is old and a hive god so that fits the "old blade" description, and the "sharpened anew" could refer to her shifting attitude toward the sword logic and darkness since the death of Oryx being what "sharpens her anew."

I was thinking hourglass was Mara since we saw in emissary in her throne world once and since her patience is what kept riven from betraying her
I think it's too much coincidence also that we now fight the likeness of Oryx in The Reckoning.
Definitely agree with the Hourglass being Savathun due to her crazy blackhole power generator experiment with the dreaming city.
However, I think the Blade Sharpened Anew, is Quria, Blade Transformed, as they have been playing an interesting part by pretending to be other characters so they can slip us intelligence about what Savathun is doing and may play an integral part in taking her down and freeing the dreaming city from the time loop before Savathun becomes to powerful.

Byf. I think you might be overthinking this one. The hourglass fits Mara(has had many interactions with the Nine) and the Blade sharpened anew fits Eris( She was forgotten in the Hellmouth but made it out and began the process of becoming something else other than a Guardian... and just like Mara, has directly conversated with the Nine).
Do I know this as fact? No but it's the best lead out there by far.
P.S for those saying Osiris I could get behind that as he has technically transcended his design by embracing the use of Vex methods and making them his own. If it is Osiris, I'd then say the Blade is Toland.

I love this lore, but I always remember the Yang Liwei generational ship during the collapse ,and lore that said all went to the distributary to become awoken. All crew were accounted for, except for nine individuals who did not become awoken. I guess they took a side?

Infinite patience hourglass reminds me of Mara, she had no (or limited) desires because she knew she would get what she wanted eventually. The Nine did release Skolas to cripple the Reef and bring the Awoken and earth-life/guardians closer together. Perhaps they are attempting the same thing with the Drifter.
Less certain about the sword annewly sharpened. Perhaps Xol? Despite being ‘of the dark’ he now assists guardians by being a terribly broken heavy weapon... I will agree, ‘sword’ really forces the Hive character.
Also side note, the Drifter blatantly says, don’t trust the Nine.
So, there’s that too.
Regardless, Xur bring weekly lore! in addition to more relevant exotics is great. Hopefully I’ll finally get that Cerberus+1 auto.

th3 Sosa Praedyth didn’t have this independence from light or darkness as the Drifter seems to have. (I would argue Mara/awoken are also independent/equal concerning light/darkness) Also I’m pretty certain there was a mission in D1 where we freed his spirit or something. Also infinite patience doesn’t strike me as someone who got stuck somewhere.
Regardless the way it is said by the Emissary makes me think these two transcendors are still alive/transcending.
So, after binging all your videos, then doing it again, I have a theory as to who one of the Nine are talking about- and it makes sense in reference to a few lorebooks brought up.
I believe that one is Mara Sov. "An hourglass with infinite patience counting down."
- Allows herself to die just to wait an untold amount of time.
- Becomes aware of the Bomb Logic (The 'counting down' part clued me to this.)
- Continues to work against the darkness while applying said logic.
Since it's just a theory take it as you will, but Mara makes the most sense to me. As for the Sword Sharpened Anew it would be neat if it involved Taox. At one point in the Splicer campaign Mithrax states something close to the line of "Perhaps we could have peace amongst all races... even Hive." Which makes me wonder if he's actually more aware of the history of the Hive from all his time spent Titan.

I mean, was it though? Do we really know what the Void is? maybe Void power is the energy of the dark space that the Nine exist in, and the effects of Dark Matter are just mass-shadows of the Void on normal space.
The number "9" is the last number in a "base 10" system which is the last and limit of all that is. Nine is a number which has many interesting qualities that other number do not have and has been used to hold a hidden code that affects every being. It is encoded into the construction of our universe... It is called the "9 Code".
360 degrees in a circle. 360=3+6+0=9, 180=1+8+0=9, 90=9+0=9, 45=4+5=9, 22.5=2+2+5=9, 11.25=1+1+2+5=9, etc. ALL REDUCES TO 9
Make it simple. Video: 1440p=1+4+4+0=9, 1080p=1+0+8+0=9, 720p=7+2+0=9, 360p=3+6+0=9, 144p=1+4+4=9
All numbers added together can reduce to nine: 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9=36=3+6=9
Nine plus any digit returns the same digit. 9+5=14=1+4=5, 9+3=12=1+2=3
I'm done for now. It's pretty easy to see the implications. The person who wrote the lore on the Nine must have been a big fan of Vortex Mathematics.

rasputin was just fully reactivated, and it seens he has some interesting views on how to accomplish his goals, a machine that can effectively make a choice, that can be considered transcendence from it's design
i do think rasputin is one of the weaker candidates though
as for quria, it hasn't been talked about enough and thus we need to talk about it, if we get a savathun expasion after penumbra then i'm 100% certain quria would factor in and thus we need to know more about it and a smaller scale expasion such as joker's wild would be a good starting point for that

If we narrow the “transcend their design” definition a little bit, Drifter was designed to be a guardian of the Light, yet found balance through an opposing force, in this case the taken. There are two other guardians who may fit this. First is Osiris, with the Vex (the infinite hourglass). The second would be Toland, with the hive (sword sharpened anew, which also works because he himself was destroyed and brought back anew as the TolandBall). The only other theory I have is that the first could be Praedyth
I remember last night playing the reckoning, the emissary says something along the lines, about being everywhere but also being drawn back to this system.
