    Just terrific stuff. I've watched several times (and even paused it multiple times during the presentation) in order to fully obsorb the information. The students at BYU are very lucky to have this man. In a world where lots of experts disagree, Dr. Bikman is the expert I trust.

    Thank you for finally stating what I've suspected. The more carbs you eat, the more fiber you should eat with it. If you're not eating carbs, you don't need as much (or any) fiber. This nuance doesn't get enough attention.

    This knowledge and info you share is valuable and crucial to learning and relearning. I wish I had these knowledge tools 15yrs ago. I have been frantic over the years trying to do better because I saw my dad go thru a multiple bypass. The information out there back then did me no good so here I am respecting the magnificence of this human body more than ever and relearning. Thank you for the tools.

    While my personal behavior is already altered to zero plants in the diet, the roles of fructose degrading bonds was startling. The other instance being the aid to the immune sequestration by LDL. Outstanding overview

    Brilliant simplified explanation of the importance of the microbiome, well done Dr.Bikman, wish you were my teacher at medical school over 40 years ago!     Excellent lecture.
    I now have more reasons not to eat seed oils or most vegetables and fruits and more reason to keep taking a small amount of allulose.

    Oh Dr. Ben - I was studiously listening to your lecture, but actually laughed out loud when you said, "There is nothing about me that is a hippie." Your serious demeanor helps me focus during these deep talks about science.
    I also appreciate that you dive right in with the science lingo. Even though I'm an MBA not an MD or PhD...your concise and accurate word choice makes understanding these complex topics much easier.

    Thank you for the technical and basic breakdown of the MOA. The gram negative LPS explanation helped me cross reference how seudomonas aeruginosa creates cis-2-decenoic acid that disperses some types of biofilm.

    It’s my crazy high triglycerides that I am so worried about. Oof 😓 Eating avocados, avoiding carbs and don’t drink anything with sugar. Also in the process of healing my gut. Thank you Dr. Bikman for sharing your vast knowledge with us all!

    27:13 "Just to really put a fine point on it. The corn oil compromised it. It promoted intestinal inflammation and weakened the tight junctions. Saturated fats did the exact opposite. These fats from dairy. Now Dairy has a lot of different fats and I'm an advocate of all of them. I think dairy fat is one of the most overlooked, beneficial things we can eat . The saturated fats from dairy fat were found to recover or heal the gut and tighten the tight junction ." Saturated fats

      OMG/ This is Huge! 28:57 "People with the lowest LDL levels actually die more, including dying from sepsis and infections."
      "The person with the lowest LDL appears to have a very weak immune system and that is generally part of what's going to kill them. In contrast people with the highest LDL levels not only tend to live longer but they also have much less fear of infections let alone something as severe as a septic shock or sepsis and that is because of what LDL does."
      "This is why I suggest that rather than being viewed as a villain of the cardiovascular system, which I don't think is fair at all, it should be viewed as a hero of the immune system. LDL has on it these areas called LPS binding domains, where it literally can sense. It can scavenge LPS from the blood. Let's say that you've had a certain amount of LPS come in from your intestines which is where it comes from. LDL will bind it . Take it to the liver, and dump it into the liver for the liver to then dump it into the intestines back into the colon where it can be dumped ultimately get out of the body actually the liver would put it into the small intestine then it'll go to the colon and then out of the body through the bile duct on the front end. So LDL cholesterol, far from being this problematic molecule, when it comes to LPS at least, is very beneficial. "
      "Again this could explain why the correlational evidence suggests people with higher LDL have much lower risk of infections and inflammation because LDL is literally binding, Scavenging! It's searching for and binding to the LPS saying 'LPS you naughty little child. I'm not going to let you wreak havoc.in the body. I'm going to ground you. I'm going to put you in timeout' ." Wow!

    EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! Thank you so much for this educational video. I suspect I have Leaky Gut due to the over consumption of sugar and of course since it’s Summer, I have been consuming more alcohol than my usual. I am for sure ELIMINATING my sugar and alcohol intake. Can Leaky gut cause bloating due to the inflammation? Just been feeling unmotivated and fatigued. Hoping to heal my gut and improve my mood and health by following your advice!

    I’m really enjoying your lecture series and I’m learning so much about cell biology, hormones, nutrition, health and wellness, etc.
    I have been eating a Proper Human Diet for 586 days (started keto, then ketovore and now 90-95% carnivore for the past 500+ days)…
    Here is my question…
    Although I consider myself as a carnivore, I do sometimes eat fresh fruit (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cantaloupe).
    You had mentioned that fructose weakens the proteins that hold the epithelial cells in your gut, so..
    what negative (or positive?) effects am I getting by occasionally consuming some fresh fruit in my diet?
    Should I stop eating any fresh fruit? I do not drink fruit juices btw…

    So, sounds like I’m good to go if I I eat my berries every morning with my 2% milk fat yogurt containing 17 grams of protein per 10 oz then everything is good, since the dairy offsets, and the protein offsets. Glad I listened to another one of your videos😀

      Wow have you ever watched your blood sugar after eating that? How’s your A1C? Get it checked. Should be 5.6 or lower. If it’s higher exchange that terrible breakfast for some eggs and bacon. No bread.

How is some highly nutrient dense fruit going to harm me in that situation. Sorry if you you are unhealthy, I’m not. PS, I eat eggs, I don’t eat processed flour or any other processed foods, except dairy.

    Thanks for giving me information about this topic. I am still looking for info on the possibility of tight junction compromise by physical stretching, as from excess gas from gut bacteria or from cpap aerophagy. If you have any idea of where to look, let me know. This seems like a real obvious compromise of epithilial membrane that is being ignored by clinicians, but I can't find anything on that.

      Gas - eating plants gave me the worst gas. I thought it was cheese lol. Nope. Plants. Once I went carnivore (still eat cheese without problem) I stopped the explosive gas and poops don’t smell and ZERO constipation. Nice to not have rotting waste inside me. Plants aren’t human food. They just overwork your intestines trying to get something/anything useful from that ingested non-food. Eat the fat, beef and eggs. Skip the overpriced produce aisle.

      Maybe, the doc could explain my really weird cholesterol numbers. Total 8.28, tgl 0.73, LDL 4.61 and HDL 2.77. I got 3 exclamation marks next to the total and LDL. This mainly 10% fat Greek yogurt, and cream cheese pushing the LDL so high. Had another test two weeks later only for LDL and total. LDL 3.88 and total 6.7 as cutting down drastically on dairy. The higher cholesterol also pushed my Hba1c to 36 from 35 in a year. I felt really good eating dairy also kefir. Now, stuffing my face with mainly Avocados and a tiny bit of cream cheese and cheese 😊

    it seems rather obvious that tight junctions in the Gut (or the BBB) will deteriorate with age. The discussion of butyrate was of interest and reminds me of discussions i have heard about Inositol.

    Why does dairy make my face puffy? Also, even a tiny bit of ANY type of dairy to include but not limited to kefir, yogurt (plain) liquid milk, heavy cream, sour cream, cheese (no added colors or anything else) fancy imported cheeses, whatever literally ANY form of dairy at all makes me constipated. Yes, I've had raw milk. Same thing (though less bad). I know about the casomorphines, but why do I get puffy eyes when eating dairy?

    This is one of the most interesting video from Dr Bikman. This explains a lot of things about gut disease, inflammation and, indirectly auto immune disease etc
    I'll have to watch it more than once
    No wonder that a carnivore diet resolves so many illnesses : no fructose, no seed oils, plenty of saturated fat, including dairy fat and higher LDL is the recipe for healing the gut and the rest of the body.

    Fascinating lecture! I’m trying now to imagine the process by which a fast would heal the gut now that I have been introduced to some of the proteins and cellular structures, etc. How long does it take to heal the gut via fasting I wonder?

    Skin is actually pretty good at keeping unwanted chemicals out. If you've ever worked with the solvent dimethyl sulfoxide, the biggest danger of that solvent is that it dissolves poisons in it and carries them through the skin, turning what would've been safe to handle into a contact poison.

      You meant “safe.” We don’t trust what the government says is safe. They say eat whole grains as your main food base. Enough said?

      “Safe” means it won’t kill you today or a week from now. Longer than that? Maybe you get all kinds of bad stuff 5-20 years from now. No way for anyone to link the diseases with the chemical contact that way. The government officials get their payoffs and you get sick.     Hi Ben.. this was a fantastic lecture I really enjoyed listening to. One thing I was really listening out for, and curious to see if you mentioned, was the issue of lectins. Dr Stephen Gundry has made a career out of convincing people that lectins in general are a significant cause of leaky gut, and that certain lectin containing foods such as nightshades should be avoided. What's your thought on this? I was a little surprised to hear nothing about lectins in your lecture considering it's all about leaky gut

    Recently heard detergents cause gut leakage, therefore important to completely rinse dishes and make sure your dishwasher does a good job of rinsing. I wish you had covered this too. Maybe some other time?

    Doc, I'm a huge fan of your podcasts. One thing that would be a huge improvement for me is to see a visual diagram of what you are saying. Just putting your hands together is not enough for me. I may be a dumb outlier in your audience, but I have a hard time following your technical presentations when I don't have an initial background. This is one of those cases where I don't know anything about leaky gut. For me, this video was hard to follow. I would like to learn, but hearing a stream of technical words does not seem to enter my brain. I need a visual representation to go with what you are saying.

    Question for Dr. Bikman... I used corticosteroid nasal spray for 20 years. Since a known side effect of long-term topical steroid use is permanent thinning of the skin, is it possible that the long-term use of such corticosteroid nasal spray could permanently thin the gut lining causing chronic, irreversible leakier gut? I think so. I think that's a distinct possibility.

      I know of one way that can happen, antibiotics get rid of a lot of bacteria that normally keep yeasts like candida under control and fungal overgrowth causes leaky gut.

    You just missed this about diary. When the fats are good, proteins are not.
    Casein, particularly A1 β-casein, has been shown to affect intestinal permeability through both opioid and non-opioid signaling pathways. This protein can:
    Increase total gastrointestinal transit time
    Elevate colonic myeloperoxidase activity
    Modulate dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) activity
    These effects can contribute to increased intestinal permeability, also known as "leaky gut

    Very interesting information
    However, the most powerful tool I've seen to heal every health problem is fasting. And I mean a real serious prolonged fasting (minimum 72 h), not this futile concept of intermittent fasting.
    I have a lot of respect for Dr. Bikman and the useful information he continually provides. But the omission of fasting as a tool for healing gut problems, it could only be justified because the Dr himself, never has experienced the astonishing benefits of a prolonged fasting.

    Maybe, the doc could explain my really weird cholesterol numbers. Total 8.28, tgl 0.73, LDL 4.61 and HDL 2.77. I got 3 exclamation marks next to the total and LDL. This mainly 10% fat Greek yogurt, and cream cheese pushing the LDL so high. Had another test two weeks later only for LDL and total. LDL 3.88 and total 6.7 as cutting down drastically on dairy. The higher cholesterol also pushed my Hba1c to 36 from 35 in a year. I felt really good eating dairy also kefir. Now, stuffing my face with mainly Avocados and a tiny bit of cream cheese and cheese 😊

      Those numbers don’t seem right at all. An A1c that high would be deadly I think.

      Perhaps you have confused your HbA1c result with your hematocrit result?

      @lemunbalm3731 the cut off in the CR is 44. In the uk a 48 is classed as being a diabetic. The 36 equals 5.4.

      @@donnatodd4119 hahaha! Find a lovely vanilla frozen custard ice cream recipe on line. Mine has 3 c heavy cream (no milk) and 6 egg yolks (good fats), substitute sugar with allulose. I use an inexpensive Cuisinart ice cream maker. I’m so used eating nothing sweet I cut back the allulose to 1/2 c instead of 2/3 c. Have fun!

    When u say LDL acts as a scavenger. Does it mean the large buoyant LDL?
