I use this skill often, from gap closing to evading the afflicted monster mega explosion (anomaly burst) and jumping back into the fight quickly. In my opinion it's significantly better than twin vine. I find twin vine too clunky to use reliably.
I started using sheathing retreat the moment I unlocked it. Partially because I just hated twin vine and didn't know about the buffs it got, but I've always noticed it's potential for repositioning. Sheathing retreat is great for getting around to a monster's head if it got knocked down away from you, and i use it exclusively for violet mizu, who moves so far away so often twin vine just breaks all the time.
I first started trying Sheathing Retreat when I was grinding base Thunder Serpent Narwa (I have been going all elemental, so Narwa weapons were a must) and specifically when Narwa falls down normally I'd have to sheath and then run up to where her abdomen is to hit it (as breaking it gives you a good chance of getting her Gem) but now when she falls I just use Sheathing Retreat and then I'm within attacking range of her abdomen... while I haven't used it much aside from that... just for reference; my main Lance playstyle is to go all elemental and spam the Guard Dash multi-hit attack with the occasional Anchor Rage... you'd be surprised how effective it is!
Sheathing Retreat can roll over when in mid air that's very useful for adapt your combo and no need to add guard up for anomaly burst or evade Espinas rare species's charged burst.
Been using it exactly as you shown... My only problem is that, they should've make the cooldown faster. If only the CD is faster, I'll definitely choose it over twin vine

just a little correction; Flaming Espinas is a subspecies not a rare species

Lance hop actually does put out fire. 4-5 hops max.
Yep, that's correct! In this case, being able to roll just does it a bit faster!
Lbg has a similar move yet I fail on every level to pull it off cause I end up thinking I have vault and I have counter equipped and I get blasted...
