For whatever reason, this video is getting recommended a lot by the algorithm. Unfortunately its a few audio issues that the rest of my channel doesn't have, so if you like the idea but not the audio i strongly recommend you check out some of my other videos!
On that topic i've got a quasi-sequel to this video here: ua-cam.com/video/HhrLa9hiQOs/v-deo.html
and if you want to learn more about the lance maybe give this one a try: ua-cam.com/video/WOGkm7K5fck/v-deo.html

One important thing to mention here is the sharpness efficiency of a combo; while [shield tackle -> slap] is ever so slightly worse dps-wise than [slap -> poke -> slap -> shield tackle] it ends up wasting less sharpness on weak pokes that are only present to chain into another slap and builds KO damage faster (also in case anyone wasn't aware, shield tackle itself actually doesn't take any sharpness because it hits with the shield). This is actually another reason why [slap -> leaping thrust] is great, because despite hitting three times leaping thrust only consumes sharpness for the initial hit. Additionally, this combo hits exactly 4 times, which is the precise amount of hits needed to proc chain crit's big atk bonus. Overall quite an informative video, thanks for the coverage!
PS: Very nice censoring of your cart at 6:28 with the spreadsheet, I wish this could be done real-time in-game lol

It seems like everyone's using protective polish making sharpness efficiency less relevant. Not sure that's actually optimal, though, and that's a good point for anyone not using it (which includes me, lol).

glad to see someone appreciating skyward thrust, I've seen others mostly dismissing it without actually trying it out. I love skyward thrust, yes, it is situational and it is not easy to land, as you gain more experience on when to use them, landing all those hit and seeing those juicy number is satisfying af. You can also easily down a flying monster or break wings with it. When a monster is down, I rather use shield tackle > slap combo instead of spiral thrust as I often get 1 extra stun and partbreak topple to let me continue my combo.

I second the comment about this being an eye opening video. Thanks Gobul! I'm genuinely amazed by the damage numbers you're getting out of your Lance. I'd be super interested in some of your go-to builds. Looks like my usual Attack Boost + Offensive Guard (+Elemental Boosts) skill core doesn't quite cut it when compared to those numbers.

Guard dash for the win! Glad to hear it’s part of the optimal move set as I’ve fallen in love with it. Your silk-bind analysis is an eye opener. I used spiral thrust so much in base Rise that I didn’t really use anchor rage. Gonna swat up on that now and try some more skyward thrusting.

  • @kevs94

I acknowledge that it's Lance's best move right now, but as someone that's played Lance for a long time, I just refuse to use the charged sweep. It just breaks the flow of my triple poke zen. That said, I didn't realize leaping thrust was so powerful, I've been enjoying the new shield tackle to complement me swapping to insta-block since I'm so used to being able to guard from an attack.

    Something of note,
Shield Tackle can quickly transition to Counter Thrust -> Power Guard,
which can go into Leaping Thrust or Counter Thrust's attack.
So if you do have Shield Tackle you would still have access to Leaping Thrust if you wanted.

    • @MrKrizix

For future content idea , may be really interesting to see the difference in clear time while using the "best" build possible while using the most efficient combos VS a good build using good combo , or something along those lines . Pick the monster you're most consistent against and give it a try . I did something similar in world and the result were shockingly close ; just to give people an average idea of what it meant to be playing in the most efficient way possible versus a more relaxed hunt . To put thing in perspectives to newcomers and even vets to not feel that pressure to always play " the best way possible " or get discouraged if they cannot do it .

Thanks for the breakdown. I only have one thing to add that I haven't seen other people bring up (yet). You can insta-block immediately after shield tackle. This means that if you aren't facing the right way after an attack or over-commit, you can tackle in place of hop to re-adjust your facing for insta-block. Combined with the lower stamina cost, the execution feels easier in most situations where you're right in the monster's face.

I've used a lot of the thrust attacks and started to use shield dash and I love it so much. It let you be soooo relentless en continue your onslaught on the monster. Most of the time when I am not playing sweaty gamer mode, I am in de middle in a combo when the monster attacks so I can't use insta block because it has a really long animation till you can use it, BUT shield dash is instant and can activate Offensive Guard really easily. This let me gain and sustain 15% damage from OG and continue my poke game :)
Ooh and I use spiral thrust, because I like those damn angles!

I'm relatively new to Lance, but I will confess that I like Spiral Thrust a lot not particularly for the DPS, but as a repositioning tool that lets me quickly slip behind a monster if I'm after the tail, or zip back around to the face if it's gone after someone else.
It also probably hurts my DPS a bit, but hopefully I can be forgiven for often bringing both spiral thrust and sky piercer... For the Gurren Lagann references. I may bring something more optimal if I'm with others but when I'm by myself I gotta have my fun.
Thank you very much for the informative video, it should help quite a bit when I'm not being a goof XD Someday I'll be good with a Lance, and I'll still manage to make terrible decisions based entirely on "I thought it would be cool"

All I know is this video started out with a visit to the Emotional Support Owl, so I'm happy. Being a lance main I like occasionally looking for tips to increase my DPS - being a guard lancer can make it a little tough to crank those numbers at times, but I'm pretty dedicated to not dying as much possible. Skyward Thrust took some getting used to in how to time it just right, but integrating it into my fighting style has really made my whole game better. It's kind of funny, too, I was just wondering how to get to get more bladeshells, scutes, and other assorted back items from monsters that are sometimes a real pain to knock over.

If you block something and get knocked back, you can press A on xbox controller or the equivlent on whatever you use to put yourself into powerguard while not stamina efficient, can keep your posistioning up if you need it to, or even dodge a followup attack if the monster leaps behind you

  • @hennyzhi2261
    @hennyzhi2261 2 роки тому

I'm probably going to keep Spiral Thrust on the blue scroll for roars primarily whenever Skyward Thrust isn't a viable matchup option. I've already gotten some good use out of it in base Rise, so a small bit of optimization for the start of fight is there since the boost from it is flat. It'd kind of disappointing, but I think allot of people would be upset if it also got boosted and created another power creep issue. Were actually at a point where almost all the things in the kit can serve a functional purpose even if it is niche, so swapping scrolls makes sense. Now I just need to learn to do something cheeky with the sheathing retreat thing because I guess you could use it backwards as a form of gap closer, but do you get i-frames and how fast can you re-sheath is the thing that might matter there. It's not what Capcom intended, but I'll take anything to make it interesting and not just a get out of jail card.

As a lance main since 3U who dropped it since World due to the speed of the game leaving lance behind, the biggest problem for me has just been trying to switch from the "poke poke poke slide" of many past entries to the dash jump thrust charge slap stuff of Sunbreak. At the very least I have it on good math from this video on what good general combos to work towards are, and also that even if I'm not doing *the* most optimal combo, it usually isn't less than 10% less damage which is good to know. I just gotta get good at insta-block since I've also ignored that when using it in Rise since it just wasn't that great.

Probably not the intended effect of the video, but all this does is show me that the "best" way to play isn't really that much better than what I enjoy doing, so I feel less bad about not playing optimally. (love shield-tackle triple pokes, essentially)
Biggest "problem" I'm having is not using cross slash. While I did like the move when I forced myself into using it, there were just too many times where it left me open or a MR monster did one of its endless multihits or the shield wiggle just took away endless amounts of time I'd want to use to reposition. I've stood there wiggling, before being allowed to turn around and guard-dash so many times and it was really just too frustrating to keep in my rotation.
Also, noteworthy monster for skyward thrust is somna. When they rear up it works pretty nicely. Can also use it fairly well on last boss's legs, but his face is in pretty good high poke range and his follow-up's are a bit too deadly to spam it there.

followed because lance! The other thing I think kinda goes unspoken is the best dps in MP hunts vs SP hunts. You can't guarantee the monster will be next to you or attack you specifically, in which case Spiral Thrust becomes much more useful to maintain high dps. I like Spiral Thrust in MP hunts to let me move around more freely when the monster isn't on me. I also play with Diversion (the skill/decoration that increases your agro). Reverse lunge while I think pathethic and boring, has actually been really useful for me to gap close (reverse lunge) if I don't want to Spiral thrust in or didn't bring it, and I've been finding other uses for it.

Out of the three, slap is the best so the best combos are going to be about cycling back to the slap with as little loss of dps as possible.
but as it was asked for here are the %difference compared to "leap -> slap".
      leap poke slap -12%
leap slap poke -9% (its better than "leap poke slap" because the third poke does more damage than a first or second poke).

It's so funny that they gave Guard Dash a Switch Skill in the same breath that they made Guard Dash so good, it became hard to give up lmao. The other benefit of it that I prefer over Shield Tackle is that you can reposition sideways or backwards while still keeping your shield and weapon facing towards the monster. I've also realized that if you need to block multiple hitboxes as an Instablock main, Guard Dash is a much faster alternative to Counter Thrust if you want maximum guarding power, since Instablock still allows you to perform Guard Dash from a neutral stance

  • @BetaNights

Ok, this was legitimately awesome to see. Lance has always been one of my favorite weapons to play since I first began back in 3U. While I think World is still my favorite iteration of Lance just in the way the weapon FEELS, I'm having a blast with it in Sunbreak!
That said, I do really need to experiment with more sets and playstyles... I know it's crazy strong, but I've never been a fan of the Adept Guard, so I've opted to step away from Instablock and play a more classic Guard/Counter Lance style like I did in World. But after seeing the sheer numbers you're putting out here, I may swap things around and give it another chance, if not to help with other combos and whatnot.
That said, I still cannot stand the stupid Charged Slap move, and I hate that it's as strong as it is. It just feels so awkward and clunky. Even if I do swap to Instablock, I think I'll keep with Shield Bash or the Leaping Thrust combo.

I've really enjoyed using leaping thrust, especially after I heard it only uses 1 sharpness. I thought it felt good to use, but basically you're showing that it's way better than triple poke since it uses way less sharpness while being pretty much the same damage.

I tried Shield Tackle but after seeing Zebraquakes runs using the good old Guard Advance and Leaping Thrust and trying it out for myself I prefer it and it feels more fun and natural (I liked Guard Advance in MHW/Iceborne). With the changes to Anchor Rage I very rarely feel like I need Spiral Thrust so I might have Skyrward on the other scroll if I need it instead.

I saw someone unironically saying that because of the elemental buffs charged wide sweep was really bad now and accusing me of not playing very much lance if I thought spamming it was still optimal. I broke down the maths for him and he hit me with a "too long, didn't read." Feelycrafters infest every community...
Personally I find shield tackle incredibly useful for shortening typical hunts (as in, hunts where you're simply trying to complete it as quickly as possible in real time, eg when farming something, and not trying to get the best in-game time possible; in other words, hunts where you're not resetting for a TA time with a perfect run and perfect RNG, you're just playing the game normally), because the length of the sweep means that you often end up out-of-position afterward because the monster moves to the side, and the shield tackle lets you pivot in any direction and continue attacking. And of course you get 1-4 KOs per hunt typically when you use it. Also makes activating offensive guard braindead since if you spam it ALL of your shield frames are active frames for OG. I don't use silkbind skills at all (I flatly refuse, they drain any fun out of the game), so having 100% OG uptime without the element of luck (or for that matter skill) involved in activating it normally helps to offset the lack of anchor rage in terms of damage potential.
Of course, I also don't TA in Rise at all. It would be pointless, since I hate the optimal playstyle for every single weapon type. But I've TAed a bit in 4U and GU (never got to that point in third gen, and basically played second and first as a tourist since I started with third), so unless the praxis involved has changed drastically and people are much less serious about it now I think what I say rings true, that shield tackle IS going to be optimal in normal play and that TAs have very little in common with normal play since even speedrunners have imperfect runs more often than not.

Really good video, man. I have to be honest though- I came here knowing this stuff and expected a bunch of misinformation since it's youtube. Instead, I was very impressed by your accuracy and how you weren't afraid to say something is suboptimal, like shield tackle. I won't name names but I think videos like yours are much better than the type of surface level stuff you get on bigger channels.

What about poke, poke, guard dash > leaping thrust loop? It's probably the easiest combo to get consistent perfect positioning idk how the dmg compares though

  • @Rubikant

What about Leaping Trust->Poke2->Poke3? What’s it’s DPS? It seemed to be higher than just repeating Leaping Thrust in a quick test, maybe because the 3rd poke is more damage than 1 & 2. Bit safer and more accurate than charged slap too.

Do you use some skill for stamina, Or some Dango´s ?
Trying to get into Lance as i am a little burn out on Gunlance at MR.20.
But find my Stamina gone so fast.
All so trying to find a build, It is a bit hard, As some say use Guard, Guard up, Offensive Guard.
Some say use only 1 of them, others say 2 of them, and so on.
But when i look a speed runners (i know they good), I only see Guard up.
Dont really want to make to much gear before i made up my mind like it or not.
    Thanks kindly.

On slap leaping thrust combo, what level do you charge it to? And do you use focus skills?

    • @garmzai
      @garmzai 2 роки тому +1

I tried putting focus on my build and the difference is very small, I think you're better off putting dps skills
The slap has a uncharged, charged and overcharged state. Uncharge slap deals the same dmg with regular poke. Charged and overcharged deals the same dmg.
If you hold the button until u slap, it's the overcharged state. You need to release the button at exactly the lights go up on your lance to get the charged slap and this is the fastest way to slap.

I do wish it had a little bit of a guard/counter/hyperarmor at the start, since that's the theme of the weapon but I get that having a move where you actually have to find a safe window rather than just countering an attack adds variety to the gameplay and is probably for the best that it doesn't guard/counter. Already got the entire rest of the moveset for countering.

Im likinvi for th sake of liking it bc im aLance main since mh in ps2 onwards and.... well. for my tastes and this last fast paced iteration of the series in rise and sunbreak where you can see the dmgnumbers, its ok if u want to go meta dps or watever, but the real joy of lance for me,its not the dps cos i dont like speedruning unless is for farming lesser materials, but for the sheer doing of doing great constant dmg and cutting those danm tails bf the LS weebs or GW chads. Its a matter of filosophy and no one is better with this weapon if they do more dps or watever,is how we use it in the context of the hunts.
