    I think it's worth giving a big ol' shoutout to the changes to Insta Block in sunbreak. The window is every so slightly larger now (still tighter than offensive guard), which doesn't seem like much, but it makes a *world* of difference in how usable it is. That plus the change where the riposting Cross Sweep attack deals tons more damage *and* you can instead combo into switch skills from insta block makes it my favorite part of the Lance toolkit

    • @songoku6067

      @@songoku6067 what reason do you have to not take it, when you have all the benefits that come from instablock (extremely fast actions out of it, cross sweep being strong+comboable etc) while you have guard dash/shield tackle for sticking on the monster? To use the Normal guard would require you to stop attacking briefly too no? But why do that when Guard Dash Back blocks everything, done out of your combos, and gives you positioning, all while allowing for an instant follow up punish. (Lunging thrust)
      Im sure logistically I may be sinplifying it and I expect a reply citing all the exact guard strengths behind the different blocks, but as far as I can tell guard dash has worked like a dream as my split second defense, while allowing me to keep the versatility (and style) of instablock and gather some really cool clips.
      TLDR why even use normal Guard when Guard Dash exist

  • @jethrolarson

    Biggest thing about Shield Tackle for me is being able to use it reorient, since you can use it to do a 180 and small gap close. So money, especially when you're learning a new monster

  • @SunsetSonota

    Do wanna mention that having instablock with Guard tackle gives you activation frames at the start of the animation and begins near the end of the tackle. this is fairly useful agaisnt those MR monsters with delayed attacks or practice for insta blocking.
    Dont Sleep on Guard Advance however! The distance it can cover is nothing to scoff at and access to leaping thrust that lets you do a back advance into leaping thrust combo perfect for status and/or part breaking.

      I've been generally downplaying guard advance for a while now do to the stanima cost, but that is a very valid point about status buildup being better for it because you get the leaping thrust and the ability to generally control your position easier without getting turned around like you might with Guard Tackle.

      Plus the dmg uptime of Leaping Thrust is pretty nuts after the buffs and it conserves sharpness as its only ever counter as 1 hit.

    Been playing lance exclusively in pc mhr (was a ig main in switch), the direction sunbreak went for lance is amazing. Instead of giving flashy new moves and ignoring the bad toolkit, they straight up fixed the moveset instead which imo made lance play how it was meant to be played more effectively.
    1. Twin vine now costs 1 wirebug instead of 2 and gives a guard buff... omg this move went from useless and expensive to a great utility tool.
    2. Anchor rage now has longer guard time and gives buff according to dmg of the move block instead of knockback, making a good move even better.
    3. Instaguard now does not require street fighter 3 precision to parry, its now very usable and genuinely a strong option. (Pre sunbreak i couldnt even consistently parry the toadversary it was that hard)
    Thx capcom for not just ignoring a minority of your playerbase, we lance players are more than happy :D

    Sheathing Retreat is actually pretty nice to have as you can evade an attack, I mostly use this to get away from unblockables, and during the animation you can hold the block button down to go straight into a charge to either get further away or get right back in to the fight, all-round worth taking over Twin Vine which is still janky.

Was hitting a total of 2k damage if not more on Narwa and if I fully went in for damage, I can see that rising to upwards of 3k if you get a good spot (Or if they are knocked down and you time it right, since for the final boss I get similar effects and timing it then normally nets me another 1-2 hits)

My GF runs Horn so I know she's doing most of the KO buildup, plus I have a Palico with KO King that's helping, but the actual KO values on the Shield Charge initial hit and bash must be crazy high because I feel like even incidentally I'm the one that actually triggers the KO about 50% of the time.
    Also with the changes to Twin Vine making it actually fucking worth using now, dropping that on any monster on top of having Diversion in my set makes me feel super useful to any hunt by keeping the heat off of others and keeping the monster in a central, static location as much as possible. My girl favors horns with heals, too, so we always feel like a damn MMO party just jumping into people's hunts as an actual Tank and Healer. It's great.
    If you make sure to slot in some Stamina management skills and use your abilities correctly, Lance is lowkey mobile as hell and you can be very pointy, painful gum stuck to the bottom of any monster's shoe that they just cannot shake.

    I've been a lance main since I started in 3U, but recent entries have made it less and less practical for actually doing damage, so this video makes me feel so happy that I can use the lance again and not feel like I'm just being carried by my team. No matter how good I was in World with lance, I just had to sink too many armor skills into guard and there were very few flashy damaging moves in the arsenal. This is just so good.

    P.S. you can wirebug hang mid sheathing retreat then jump out of the hang to go even further AND change directions which was not showcased here!

  • @gabrielesquaratti5709
    @gabrielesquaratti5709 2 роки тому +1

    sheating retreat is essential if you refuse to use guard up. you can avoid unblockable attacks and while airborne you can initiate a shield charge to go right back at the monster doing fine damage (25+40 mv) and decent ko (10+30) or a charge attack ideally landing the twin thrust finisher (35+60 motion values)

  • @SanganY
    @SanganY 2 роки тому +6

    Shearing retreat is anime lance incarnate, you can searching and still wire but in the air I often use it when the monster creates a lot of space to instantly wire bug closer and attack mid air, or just to reposition, dodge to avoid the attack but midair wirebug and attack to get back in. With wirebug whisperer you can zip around with ease and safety using seathing, you can also face away from the monster to sheathe toward it and attack mid air to engage, it’s great stuff.

      Since switching to guard tackle I have less mobility without the leaping thrust, guard charge also cover less distance and use more stamina compared to dash attack, sheathing retreat gives me the mobility to quickly close distance. Since guard tackle can change direction, simply guard tackle away from monster, sheathing retreat and jump + charge cover massive distance. It also allows me to use Dust of Life much faster to save my dying friend lol

I've gone through many weapons since I'm still new to the franchise, but the Lance weapon is now something I decided to main. I just love the how aggressive you can you can be whilst being able to be on the defensive if needed. Another quick tip is that the parry switch skill is almost always better than standard guard. You can still do a standard guard but you have a quick parry animation before that gives you opportunity for huge damge

    • @Corrodias
      @Corrodias 2 роки тому

      The only reason I don't use it is that it interferes with my execution of the guard dash, which I use *all* the time for positioning. You can guard dash instead of instablock if you press the inputs together simultaneously enough, but I have a tendency to screw up that timing, it seems.

  • @ajaafive1384

    Also it has a longer window to parry and deals a lot of damage.

    A few observations on my end:
    - skyward thrust is not good on downed monsters, you're better off combo-ing or using spiral thrust, use skyward on things that have a tall vertical hitbox (think Malzeno when it stands up)
    - I don't think shield tackle is worth giving up leaping thrust as leaping thrust spam is the best DPS on the lance provided you've got the sharpness for it, there's also the gap closing utility leaping thrust has in conjunction with the regular guard advance
    - the shield charge can be swapped in for the lance charge though if you want to go for KOs
    - I haven't gotten around to using anchor rage much as I'd rather proc offensive guard over it, my basic style is to leap thrust into charge slap into shield advance and loop, leaping thrust into shield advance is short and responsive enough to attack, defend and counter in between nearly all monster attacks and combos while keeping pressure up
    - I also need to work on incorporating insta block into my gameplay but given how I'm always moving, it'll require a mental change to use it

    I miss the lance dealing either slash or impact damage to a monster depending on what was better on the part being hit (it made up for the lance not dealing as much as the gs or ls, and having such a short combo in exchange you could break and cut everything on a monster without damage dropoff)

    guard dash is still a severe contender to use due to the hop stab that hits three times, sure it doesnt have the stun and direction switch that shield tackle has, but it makes up for it with the serious level of dps it can manage to get off. using it lets me get pretty nutty damage off. i will be testing the lance more to see what other stuff i can do with it

    I think they improved the chip damage situation too. Half of Furious Rajang's moves in Iceborne rip through shields like paper; now you only need to worry about the laser, and not even that if you have Guard Up 3.
    And I use Sheathing Retreat more as a reposition than an escape. The monster falls over but the wing I'm targeting is on the opposite side of the body, I can now jump right over to it without needing to sheath first.

I look forward to discovering the world of Rise and Sunbreak, especially after watching this sweet little video of kickassery.

  • @MershedPerderders

    Sheathing Retreat is meant for those attacks that even counters/guard up can't handle, or at the very least it would be more dangerous for you if you counter/guard. It opens your window for a superman dive much earlier, as Lance has a really slow sheathing animation. Often, you get caught at the tail-end of the animation or you make a mistake trying to superman dive because you're mashing too hard.
    Situations where I can see this being perfect for are AT Velkhana's 360 breath nova in MHW:I, Narwa's transition into that one move with the circulating pillars, and Teostra nova.

  • @siaowun9418
    @siaowun9418 2 роки тому

    sheathing retreat has a lot of potential, because you can retreat towards the monster and then go into a guard dash to safely approach
    if you try to do this with a spiral thrust you have to take a detour and the shield has to go through the motions before you can move so its actually slower than sheathing retreat

    Lance was the weapon that originally got me *really* into enjoying Monster Hunter. Back in the Tri days on the Wii, I just stumbled through the game... until I picked up Lance and actually started to "get" what this series was going for. I'll always have a soft spot for the Lance because of that.
    But ever since then, I've enjoyed the Lance less and less with every new game and sometimes got the feeling it was getting a bit... left behind? Certainly felt about it like that in World & Iceborne, that's for sure.
    Maybe now I'll finally be able to pick it up again, it's been too long.

    Twin vines is really good now is my biggest thing with it. The targetting on the hop is much better and it's far more forgiving with the block animation while jumping. The real upside though is those free points in guard, yes I said points as in multiple. That with the hop and increased aggro makes it so even in group hunts repeatedly getting counter after counter becomes the norm.

    ice attack 5
    weakness exploit 3

    if you ko a rajang after you successfull block one of his strongest attacks with anchor rage, you can do the following combo at least 3 times : charged sweep back shield hop and lunging thrust.

    Skyward thrust is great for a few reasons. When a monster is toppled you can use it to slap poke slap sky thrust for good damage before it gets up. I have used it to dodge and counter a tail swing and after blocking raths tail backflip or any monster monster that stands straight up. I managed to record me using it against furious rajang only for him to jump up after me and get hit 3 or 4 times on the way down. Lance right now i feels like puts the game on easy mode. And i only played lance for rise for a bit.

  • @aubudbarca

    Shield Tackle is amazing yes. But it doesn't entirely overpowers the alternative Guard Dash.
    The Leaping Thrust attack after a Guard Dash got its MV massively buffed, and it hit 3 times with the sharpness cost of 1 hit. It is extremely good if you are running on a low purple sharpness lance, so to squeeze out all of that purple sharpness dmg multiplier. Most Lance speedrunners run with Guard Dash for Leaping Thrust if they aren't already Spiral Thusting all the time.
    And the buff to Cross Slash after Insta Guard is great too. Insta Guarding every moveset of a monster is incredibly satisfying, and then returning hits.
    Sheathing Retreat can also be used offensively as a gap closer as well. You can Sheathing Retreat into the monster's head and use Shield Charge mid air, and then Shield Bash for 2 high MV KO hits with your shield.
