Art Therapy Exercise - Exploring Emotional Needs

  • In this video I will show you an art therapy exercise which you can do at home with only crayons and paper. Through drawing and writing, we will explore emotional needs: what they are and how to meet them.
    My website: www.iabet.fi
My online program in Jungian Art is now open for applications: www.iabet.fi/j...
    Materials I used:
    Oil pastels: amzn.to/3YryNLm
    Paper: amzn.to/3A9l7e8
Here are the example questions you can use in the writing exercise:
    Part 1
    What is your name?
    Where have you come from?
    Why have you come here?
What have you come to tell me?
Is there anything important I should know about you?
    Part 2
    What do you need?
    What do you want?
What would make you feel happier?
    What don’t you want?
Do you feel like you need to give up something to get what you want?
How might you go about meeting that need?
Is there a part of you where this need feels met?

I began dabbling in art therapy at home to manage anxiety and stress. Without books, I just looked for videos to guide me. This is very significant and enlightening. Thank you so much!

I had an unexpected result from this exercise, i even made a surprised snort after understanding what i wrote. I got kinda scolded by my drawing that i'm worrying too much and disturbing my heart (who is also the drawing), and that the heart is a "he", and that he feels quite okay under all the pressure i have in my life right now, because he is made to withstand. I was told that i'm annoying him and should laze around and look at the sceneries. This was kinda funny and weird, but my mood for sure had improved

that was so powerful!!! The way it was framed just takes your mind out of its usual confines. I am almost seeing some wisdom in my writing that I didn't know I had😂

Thanks for this exercise, it made me realize that I am actually not doing as good as I thought I was. Literally started bawling my eyes out when I had a conversation with my circle.

Thank you for sharing your resources and knowledge, but what I appreciated the most was that you shared YOUR PERSONAL thoughts, feelings and emotions with us. As horrible as it is looking vulnerable sharing your experiences and emotions , it helps me to realise that most of us, (if not all of us) have a reason to do this type of exercise.
I’m really hoping to do your exercises and I am sending you warm love and gratitude.

I enjoy layering the new drawing on top of the old one, kind of like rewriting a story. So in this case, I would take the drawing of the bubble and continue that blue over and outside the black line until it looked more like a freeform shape, and really emphasise that bright light in the centre, expand it, even off the edge of the page! Really let myself empower myself to let that part shine as that's what the feeling seems like it wants to do... just another perspective!

Hello, Thank you for your great video. At the finish, wouldn't the most important question be ' What is the black line? So you knew what needed to be removed and how to (safely) remove it? -or would that be considered going too deep too fast?

I've just heard if this therapy recently and I'm very interested to learn more about it and hopefully gain some healing from this but trying similar practices...I don't "get" any information from my body...I feel like I'm the only one experiencing this...I never hear of anyone else having the same issue. I appreciate any suggestions!

Hi! I am in my final year of Gad school for my LMHC with a focus in art therapy. Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I am curious about the quotation statement about not focusing on "good quality art". How do you address this as a facilitator when clients hit you with, "I can't do ar,. I am not an artist". That divide between expressive and fine art is chasm for some folks.

Something about it not being art for others to see, but art for them to feel? 🤔

Have you found any good resources since?
Some ideas of mine: With people who really are afraid, Zentangle is brilliantly designed to make drawing accessible. These exercises provide confidence and are also meditative. There are plenty art therapy exercises where you just scribble like a small child. It feels ridiculous but it takes the pressure off. Nobody can expect to scribble a masterpiece. Arranging pre cut, coloured shapes on a page is great because you can play around with the design before you commit to gluing it down. Again it's good for confidence. Daubing colour onto paper any old way and cutting shapes out of it is another way to free up the artistic process.

Did you intentionally draw the angel on the left of the circle or was it intuitive? Same question for the small boy with the blue cape and the people crowed on the right side of the drawing.
