One of the best rock bass players? I would argue the greatest electric bass guitar player of all time in any genre. Squire said this is the lead instrument too, paving the way for Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius to reimagine jazz bass.
All their music between 1971 to 1976 was absolutely epic. The calibre of musicianship is unmatched -- it's been said that they were aliens from another world. But seriously, their music was so intricate, so unique, so progressive and yet so accessible. Only they could do that. If you want to experience the progression in their amazing creative development, start with their 71 album The Yes Album and go forward from there. It's a journey you'll never forget.
Their first two albums were chock full of their legendary instrumental and arrangement skill but the engineering didn’t fully capture their sound as Eddie Offord did.
I cant believe you are just now getting to Yes. I predict they will quickly become your favorite band. Its like Obi-Wan said to Luke, "You have just taken your first step into a much larger world".
Welcome Bro in the Yes World ! These magicians are more than musicians ! They are messenger angels who will change your life. It's been over 50 years for me !!
Steve Howe played guitar on this, Peter Banks was already gone. Yes has had a LOT of different members. Knowing their history is like walking through a maze. There is still a version of the band out touring.
Besides the late Keith Emerson who was the keyboardist and genius of the British progressive super group 'E.L.P.', keyboardist Rick Wakeman of the progressive rock band 'Yes' also from the U.K. in the early 1970's was also a masterful musician.💫🎤🎸🎹🎹🥁🔊🔥☮🎧
6:25 Your instincts are correct 💯 This IS THE definition of Progressive Rock. They kind of invented the genre. Shout out to Bill Bruford best drummer of his era.🎶🎶🎵🎶🔥💯✌️
Yes still tours with Steve Howe, the guitarist since 1970. Jon Anderson the original vocalist just finished a tour with the Band Geeks, playing Yes music, and just released a NEW album of original music! Rick Wakeman the keys player on this track - their 2nd keys player - still has the occasional solo concert. All well into their 70's. Ignore the lyrics till you've heard each song at least 17 times. Best band ever IMO. Best prog band ever in almost everyone's opinion. Still unsurpassed 53 years later. Try Close to the Edge, Awaken, And You and I, Siberian Khatru, Heart of the Sunrise, and many more.
The bass sound was the late Chris Squire playing an 8-string bass. Like a 12-string guitar, it's played like a 4-string bass, except each "string" is actually two strings tuned an octave apart. Chris was a monster of a player!
Anderson, Squire and Bruford are fouinding members. Keyboardist Rick Wakeman joined for this album; Steve Howe joined for the previous album, he also wrote this song.
The line up you read of the members of Yes was correct for the original. The members changed and for this album, the guitarist is Steve Howe and the keyboardist is Rick Wakeman. This, to me is the best lineup of the group. Fantastic reaction!
Just landed here and subscribed immediately to witness your journey down prog rock rabbit holes, which run very deep and are twisted with countless warrens of many flavors, so we may be here for awhile. One thing about Yes is to not get too wrapped up with a lot of the lyrics, which are fantastic and critical to the Yes sound. Jon's voice is an instrument, and his lyrics are often cryptic; trying to figure them out at first listens can be tough. Yes was my favorite band to see live. Enjoy! I'm off to see what you have heard already.
YES!! One of my most favorite songs as a teen. Definitely one of my favorite I've grown up with😊 "I found you".. Soooo glad to see you react to the BEST music😊
YES is the greatest progressive rock band in my opinion. I just subscribed. I subscribe to anyone who reacts to them as will many other YES fans so keep them coming. Loads of greats including "Awaken", "The Gates of Delirium", "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", "Turn of the Century", "Starship Trooper", "Perpetual Change", "The Revealing Science of God", lots more.
Great review and critique of Yes! I really enjoyed seeing you grooving to all the different parts of the song. I’ll definitely check out your other reactions. Keep on making the awesome vids my friend. Thanks!
Starship Trooper, Yours is No Disgrace, I've Seen All Good People, Long Distance Runaround, Heart of The Sunrise, And You And I, Siberian Khatru, South Side Of The Sky.
Heard yes for the first time in 1974 I was 14 years old and since then is my favorite band, something about they music that blew my mind, now my kids listen yes and also my grandkids are into it, previous explanations of the experience, cause is out of this world
I was soooo lucky to see them in concert. The lead guitar player Peter Banks played Classical Gas by Mason Williams on acoustic guitar, AWESOME!! R.I.P. Peter!
This was a great choice for your first song by YES. Although it is their biggest "hit", hits, of course, are not the measure of greatness in prog rock. The real measure is what other musicians say about them and their music. Geddy Lee of Rush said that If not for YES, there would be no Rush. You could say that about dozens of great bands that followed. Their most respected work is probably "Close to the Edge". Many think it is the single greatest song in prog. Thanks for doing this one.
The crazy thing is they have 100 other songs just as good or better, depending on your mood and taste. You mentioned it sounding like the band Asia for a second, the guitarist of Asia's first few albums is the same lead guitarist in Yes, Steve Howe. Yes is still together and touring with Steve, but a few original members died, some were replaced etc. The singer is touring now with The Band Geeks doing all Yes stuff, they are amazing.
Yes without Jon Anderson, definitely isn't Yes. Not taking anything away from Steve Howe and the other excellent musicians capable of playing Yes music.
Try "Sound chaser" by Yes, , Firth of Fifth by Genesis ,"Proclamation" of Gentle Giant, "Echoes" (in Pompeï) of Pink Floyd, Tarkus of ELP or "De Futura" of Magma (Be careful, this one clears the sinuses)
Glad you enjoyed this song! There are plenty of other YES songs worth listening to, but I'm sure you'll get to them at some point. Many of their best songs are quite long, so you'll have to prepare yourself for that. From that same 1971 album "Fragile" you might want to check out "Heart of the Sunrise" and "South Side of the Sky." Other amazing and brain-twisting songs by them are "Perpetual Change," "Yours Is No Disgrace," "I've Seen All Good People," "Close to the Edge" (considered a true masterpiece and one of the highest rated "prog rock songs,") "And You And I," "Ritual (Nous Sommes du Soliel,)" "Sound Chaser," "Turn of the Century," "Awaken," and "Machine Messiah." That's just a short list of my personal favorites. The band is still going, though there are no original members left in the group. The original bass player passed away a few years ago, as did the original guitar player. The classic lineup (the one that recorded Roundabout) isn't the only lineup worth listening to. The lead singer is now touring with another band and "Yes," having the guitar player from the Roundabout era is still touring and they are working on a new album. They are all making wonderful art.
There are three original members still living but the drummer has retired and the singer, Jon Anderson, plus another member are doing other stuff due to a dispute with other newer recruits unfortunately. Jon Anderson is 80 in a few months but his voice is still strong and most of the band members DID play together at their Induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The bassist, Chris Squire, actually influenced Geddy Lee of Rush and many other rock bassists. They have many long ‘epic’ songs but to introduce you slowly I would recommend Siberian Khatru, Yours is No Disgrace and Parallels before their pinnacle song Close To The Edge. These songs are from their seventies but their biggest seller, a US number one single, is Owner of A Lonely Heart but it’s VERY different from the 70’s music so I would hold back from that at the moment .
Although Yes are a great live band I would start to listen to the albums first to get the full complex sounds recorded in the studio. Their best relatively recent concerts are from Montreux 2003 after you’ve listened to the albums.
Peter Banks was their original lead guitarist on their first two albums, but he then left and was replaced by Steve Howe who is playing on this recording. I first saw them live performing their third album, ‘The Yes Album’, and they were outstanding. I saw them again promoting the ‘Fragile’ album, which thus track is from. They were a superb live band.
FYI: YES were formed by the singer & bassist in 68 to became the QUINTESSENTIAL 'definitive" Progressive Rock band of all time from 1970 -1979 with their second guitarist (70), keyboardist (71) & drummer (73) during which time they created some of the most adventurously groundbreaking music of any band within that entire decade!!!! Through the 80's, drastic lineup changes took place with new & ex-members coming and going. Eventually the primary classic lineup rejoined in the 90's & toured until 2004. The band reunited with a different singer in 2008 who was again replaced a few years later. Today, this original voice of YES, Jon Anderson has been touring & recording the best version of this music with an excellent younger group while the guitarist here, Steve Howe continues as YES backed by no members from the 70's as well. NOTE: Like YES there were many originators of the genre from Europe who began in the late 60's and were also very influentially unique during the early 70's such as the great KING CRIMSON, GENESIS, ELP, GENTLE GIANT, PFM, JETHRO TULL and more... Since you mentioned them, IMHO, the more Hardrock influenced Canadian band RUSH were fans of YES but were not "pure" ProgRock. ROUNDABOUT was there first big 1971 hit but YES were by no means a commercially mainstream band & this song is just a small taste of their amazing creativity and imaginative virtuosity to come. Your journey deep into this EXTROADINARY YES rabbit hole has just begun.............................................more YES suggestions > STARSHIP TROOPER, HEART of the SUNRISE, PERPECTUAL CHANGE, SEEN ALL GOOD PEOPLE, YOURS is no DISGRACE then once you are absolutely ready, the entire "mind-blowing" CLOSE TO THE EDGE album

I remember about when this came out. I was in high school and I heard it on an our high school radio station KVHS in Concord. You got it right about being progressive rock. This song was a little too long for alot of AM stations at the time. It was a great couple of decades as far as Rock and Roll music goes. The best part was the Concerts. I Saw Pink Floyd in '94', amazing band, amazing music and laser light show. Shedmen
You've just been introduced to the best progressive rock band to ever grace this planet. And just so you know, you've not yet heard their MORE progressive songs. Yes is life changing music. Thanks!!! for the reaction and looking forward to your journey.
The line up is the classic Yes line up Jon Anderson the greatest voice in music, Steve Howe on guitar, Chris Squire on bass, Bill Bruford on drums and Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Welcome to the greatest band that has graced this planet.
As you obviously enjoy all the different phases and changes in this song, so try ‘One Word’ from the ‘Birds of Fire’ album by the Mahavishnu Orchestra; I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Have fun.
Amazing reaction, and perceptive! Believe it or not, they have an even loftier song, (better or not is relative), called 'Awakening'. It will blow you away even more!
Having seen Yes in concert 4 times, I can honestly say that you float out the arena after a masterful performance! Listen to "And You and I" next. Then you will be ready for "Close to the Edge" and "Siberian Khatru."
Nearly every reactor discovering YES for the first time, quickly becomes a huge fan. I suggest a deep dive into the YES rabbit hole. Btw- the guitarist Steve Howe years later joined Asia- probably why it reminds you of them
steve howe is guitarist and rick wakeman on keyboards on this song....strap in, the journey gets even better....church organ, harp and harpsichord...they play anything and they can do it all live
Chris Squire played a re-worked Rickenbacker bass that was a stereo bass guitar. The treble pickup came out of one channel nd the bass pickup came out of the other channel. 2 amps could be used on stage. He also played with a pick not his fingers most of the time. Gave it bite. The other sound is a mini-moog synth. One of the best bands of all time. This song is a masterpiece with genius musicians.
Bro, continue this album with South side of the sky, Long Distance & The Fish, Mood for a Day, Heart of the Sunrise ! And keep your strength because it's only just beginning !!💗🙏
There is a band that gets very little playing time that I fell in love with that's just as talented & creative as ANY of the the more popular ones & that is Theocracy! Pick any of their songs it doesn't matter but Matt Smith is a musical genius! The first song I ever heard from them I was blown away with! I could say anything but masterpiece! I grew up in the 70's the very Pinnacle of music creativity! THAT was my norm! The song I refer to was " Mirror of Souls "! You can just close your eyes & visualize the story as it's being told!

One of the best rock bass players to ever pick up a guitar. Chris Squire.
And Keyboards thank Rick too.
Fact!
One of the best rock bass players?
I would argue the greatest electric bass guitar player of all time in any genre.
Squire said this is the lead instrument too, paving the way for Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius to reimagine jazz bass.
@@michaelbruce3871 I would not argue.
One of the greatest songs ever composed, imo.
I had the good fortune of seeing Yes in 1971 at the Whiskey. Rick Wakeman on keyboards and Steve Howe on guitar. A night I will never forget.
Chris squire is the bass player and backing vocal
Squire is phenomenal
Changed the rock bass forever.
I cannot resist watching Roundabout reactions, just for the stank face when the bass kicks in lol.

The Going for the one album of 77 and Drama of 80 were also outstanding.

Sure man !! and ... what a wonderfull Yes world !
I might get some hate, but I don't care. This song is superior to Bohemian Rhapsody, In so many ways... The epitome of Progressive Rock!😁
I have always felt Yes paved the road Queen travelled.
I agree
So obviously better. I love Queen! Especially the songwriting. But Yes!!! They can't really compare.
None of you have mentioned Gordon is a Moron by Jilted John.
Keith Emerson is another pioneer of Progressive Rock

As Jon once said, "Every time somebody got off the bus, somebody else got on"
It's mind boggling huh! This is why us old timers call today's music, garbage!
Their song, Awaken, is a life changing experience
It was progressive then……and STILL IS.!11
What an incredible reaction. Welcome to the world of Yes. Wow.

I see you have been introduced to the late but great Chris Squire. His music is eternal.
Yes that is the 70's and Rick Wakeman on the keyboard was a musical genius.
The song I refer to was
" Mirror of Souls "! You can just close your eyes & visualize the story as it's being told!
Dude. I have absolutely nothing to say about Yes though I've been listening to them for over 40 years. All I want to say is "Big Up the Gunners!".
Best band, ever. Period.
YOURS IS NO DISGRACE reaction is also uploaded on my channel
This is the song that made me decide to choose the bass as my instrument.
