I bought this album in 1971 when I was 15 years old. Back then it sounded like magical music from the future....it still does...and I still have the vinyl album over 50 years on. It is wonderful to see young people enjoying it so much today.

Me too. I have most of their albums and still play them. They are timeless. Their music has everything from the driving bass to acoustic to the amazing keyboards. I saw them live in 1973 on their world tour promoting Close to the Edge. What you get on record is what you get on stage. To have seen Rick Wakeman lost in his multiple setup of keyboards was worth the admission. Oh the sound!!!! I still love Yessongs though.

The Yes band is progressive rock (prog rock). These musicians are usually formally trained and well established in their understanding of music theory with appreciation of classical music such as Bach and Beethoven. Bands like Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Genesis, Dream Theater, and Kansas are all brilliant musicians who understand the depths of music theory and can transform that understanding into soulful creative compositions. It’s never sloppy or whimsical or just thrown together. It’s melodic and inviting and pleasant to the ear. It’s the exercise of a God given gift of creativity combined with the hard work of the study of their craft. The original Yes drummer, Alan White just passed away last week on May 26th 2022 at age 72.

The only formally trained Yes men were the keyboardists, until Trevor Rabin. But they all loved classical music and were determined to figure out how to be a rock orchestra.

    • @michaelmaxey8583

The point was that they had an appreciation for music theory and I doubt that Rick Wakeman would be interested in playing with someone who didn’t have that appreciation or had no clue of the difference between Dorian and mixolydian.

@@Kenny-ty6ts Bill played on CTTE and left at the beginning of the tour to support the album. He plays on three of the tracks of Yessongs. When Alan White joined, he had three days to learn the music. I'd say he did a remarkable job, considering he spent the next 50 years with the band! Sadly, he passed away on my birthday. Bittersweet to the extreme.

Both Chris Squire on Bass-guitar, and Jon Anderson on Vocals had NO FORMAL MUSICAL TRAINING. They were both self-taught. Such God-given talent is exceedingly rare! They both formed YES in London in 1968, when I was in the 2nd grade!

Anyone who grew up in the 70’s could pretty much recommend ANY band to you from that era, put all those names on a giant dart board, blindfold you and have you throw a dart, and you will hit a song that was probably great.
In the mid-70s, this was our reality. There were basically 4 supergroups, and then loads of amazing bands below them:
    1) Led Zeppelin
    2) …about a mile lower down on the mountain top below Zep, but still standing miles above the 3rd band was..
    Pink Floyd
    3) YES
    4) Jethro Tull
A couple of American Elite bands were: Steely Dan & The Doobie Brothers
When real musicians get off work, they listen to Steely Dan.

Zay & Zel, your appreciation for YES's artistry makes me so happy!!! You mentioned that you'd been receiving a lot of requests for a YES reaction video. That's probably because two days before you premiered this video YES's long-time drummer, Alan White, passed away. Alan lived near me. I had the pleasure of speaking with him on many occasions about his appreciation for artists from many different musical genres. He was a big supporter of young musicians. I wish Alan could have seen your reaction video, he would have been absolutely tickled by your comments. Alan was one of the sweetest men I've ever known. I am comforted by the notion that Alan's spirit is enjoying a pint of Stella and collaborating with his best friend, YES bassist Chris Squire, who passed away in 2015.
As previous commenters noted, Alan was not YES's original drummer. He replaced Bill Bruford in July 1972 and it's Bill you hear playing on "Roundabout" (1971). YES is one of the greatest progressive rock bands of the 1970s. They enjoyed additional success in the 1980s with a more commercial & pop-oriented sound on their "90125" and "Big Generator" albums, which came out when I was a teenager. You seem to enjoy the YES sound, so I hope you gentlemen will give some of YES's other works a listen. You will not be disappointed, I promise.

This album is mothers milk to me. Almost literally, since it was surely playing when I was on the teet. But that track is what I remember from my very young childhood. I remember lying in the dark with my head in my Dad’s armpit and listening. The glow of the display lamp from his turntable barely lighting the room. Being engrossed in the story. We moved from that house when I was three. My favorite song ever. Especially after recreating the scene with my two boys. We live decades for those moments.

Oh man, when the band kicks in with that groove, your faces were PRICELESS! Ha! This is definitely their best groove song, although "South Side Of The Sky" and "Heart Of The Sunrise" (from the same album) have some great stuff too. The drummer Bill Bruford, he just had a great sound, he knew how to hit the drums! (he left Yes to join King Crimson after their next album). Yes could disappear up it's own ass sometimes, but the "Fragile" album is pretty perfect. (I much prefer it to the one that came after, which everyone is recommending to you, lol)

I love this video! You guys reacted exactly like I did when I heard this as a kid when it came out. We were so spoiled in the 70s with deep talent and creativity. The Beatles started the ball rolling with experimentation in the late 60s and many other, mostly British, bands ran with it in the early 70s. It was the most exciting time for rock music, as there was still so much new ground to break and the genre of progressive rock was spawned. If you guys want to be blown away again by a 70s band, check out Magnum Opus, The Pinnacle or the Wall, all by Kansas or Jose, Black Cow or The Royal Scam by Steely Dan. You’ll thank me, no doubt. ✌🏼

Are there more bands like this? Try Emerson, Lake and Palmer, for one. (They get really wild with their instrumentation, especially their keyboardist, Keith Emerson.) For a more gentle sound, but just as much complexity, you can't go wrong with the Moody Blues. (But it can be hard to isolate a single track, since many of their albums cross-fade from one song to another.) And of course, there's Jethro Tull, featuring Ian Anderson, the world's most energetic flautist!

And for longer pieces--warning, there are a lot of them!--try Fanfare For The Common Man (another Copland cover - be sure you get the full 9 minute album version); Trilogy; Tarkus (it takes up an entire album side, but there's not a dull measure to be found); Karn Evil 9 (part of one side, all of another--the version from the boxed set _Return Of The Manticore_ leaves the 1st Impression in one piece, rather than splitting it between album sides); Take A Pebble (I prefer the studio version, but the live track from _Welcome Back My Friends..._ has some fun surprises on it); The Endless Enigma; and Pirates (this is an actual rock-musical epic story about pirates; you may not like it as much).
This is probably way more than you wanted to know, but happy hunting. I would definitely sample a couple of the shorter songs before diving into the longer "deep end" of ELP!

Anything from Peter Gabriel’s ‘Security’ album or his first two solo albums as well as anything from ‘So’ are great examples of the evolution of the kind of music that Yes, Genesis and others spawned in the 70s.

The 70's was the decade of what was known as Progressive or Prog Rock bands. Prog rock was characterized by these sudden shifts or "change-ups" in the music and tempos within the same song but somehow it all works together. This song was prog rock on steroids! I would highly recommend Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas. Everything about it is first rate!

I enjoyed seeing your reactions to this awesome tune, guys... Three more Yes tunes to try: I've Seen All Good People, Owner of a Lonely Heart, & Long-Distance Runaround. On top of that, check out Yes doing this song (Roundabout) at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2017 induction ceremony right here on You Tube... BTW, that was 46 years after the original Roundabout was released...

Now imagine that all of this was done before the digital age and that everything you here is played by a musician and not programmed. All recorded onto tape. Not only that but they can do this live, no backing tapes, all played live on stage.

If you had told me, in the 1970s, that, around a half-century later, I would be watching a "video" of two young black guys sitting in a car listening to "Roundabout", I would have asked you to give me a little of the wonderful hallucinogenic substance that you were obviously enjoying.

Great job guys. Yes were leaders in the prog rock genre and you seemed to enjoy what you heard. May I suggest you delve into early Genesis? One of my favorite tunes from Genesis has always been "The Musical Box", off of Nursey Cryme but you can just as easily go to "Watcher of the Skies" from Foxtrot or ""Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" from Selling England By The Pound. These are complicated yet accessible compositions that I think the two of you would appreciate.

The entirety of progressive rock so out shines regular rock in musianship and concept as to be another art form altogether. If Yes is new to you then start in 1967 with psychedelic music and play nearly everything that came after. You will be amazed.
