Congratulations ladies! You have just "stumbled upon" the greatest band ever created. Their catalogue is vast and you have just scratched the surface. Pick almost anything from 1970 through mid 80's and you can't go wrong. The Close to the Edge album (all three tracks), "Close to the Edge", "And You and I" and Siberian Khatru". "Awaken" ...featuring keyboardist Rick Wakeman on Cathedral Pipe Organ, "Starship Trooper", "Roundabout", "Ritual", "I've Seen All Good People/Your Move". I could go on, but...just check-em-out, you'll be impressed.

ᎩᏋᎦ! Totally agree. Though it’s a long track, “Close to the Edge”, has blown the mind of just about every reaction channel that has covered it. With at least one that I have followed for years calling it “maybe the best song he ever heard”. And before he started his reaction channel, he was mostly a hip-hop and R&B guy.
Extraordinary song from an extraordinary band full of musical mastery.
One of the greatest performing bands it has ever been my pleasure to see in concert, four times. This particular version of YES is Steve Howe-Guitar, Jon Anderson-Vocals, Chris Squire-Bass, Rick Wakeman-Keyboards and Bill Bruford-Drums. Their most famous song is probably "Roundabout". These gents are from England.
It's actually Alan White on the drums here. Bruford had already left to join King Crimson.
Okay, I couldn't tell because there was no good shot of him. Mr. White is pretty damn good himself. Thanks for the info.

No worries,YW. Bruford actually is still in the band on a couple of tracks that made it onto the Yessongs triple live album...Perpetual Change and Long Distance Runaround/The Fish. Which are actually easily the best quality audio recordings on the entire album,much clearer sounding than the muddy audio on the rest. IMO,Perpetual Change is the best cut on all of Yessongs. Highly recommend if you've never heard it.
As I said in my original comment, I've seen YES four times, three with Trevor Rabin on Guitar instead of Steve Howe, Oh well, Trevor is pretty good too. Always great and well played, seen them in Worcester, Mass, Bethlehem, Pa, Camden, N.J. and Philly. YYYYEEEESSSS!!!!

Not the one song that I would have started off on, but still a good song. I would have started with "Roundabout" or "Long distance runaround". YES, has a lot of GREAT songs, and is a very deep rabbit hole! Thank you ladies!

Yes is the king of progressive rock. Probably the greatest band of rock musicians ever assembled. You've probably heard "Roundabout" and/or "Owner of a Lonely Heart". Their catalog is extremely deep and inspiring. Have fun diving into it. I would recommend "And You And I" or "Starship Trooper" as a good next step before jumping into their epics.
Heart of the Sunrise from live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2003. Much better video and audio quality. The technology caught up to Yes by that time.

Like so many out there, have been a fan and seen them many many times since 1971.
But like the guys, getting old now, we’ve lost Chris and Alan sadly.
It’s good to see the next generation appreciating what the guys were doing all those years ago.

The keyboard player is Rick Wakeman and he is a superb musician. He is quite a humorous guy. I have his first book which very funny, but also serious too as he had a heavy heart attack in his late 20s in the late 70s. He was a very big drinker and just gave it up with no problem.
He is playing up to May this year and retiring from live work due to his age.
Check out his R'n'R Hall of Fame acceptance speech (for the band). He had the audience rolling in the aisles. Best acceptance speech ever,
@@alancritchley5901 Yea, I did see it. I just love Rick because he is so down to earth. If I remember rightly when recording Tormato, he was throwing peanuts at the other band members. Not their finest moment. Some good songs, but well below par.

Live versions for first time listens are not optimal,ladies. The studio version of most songs are whewre you get the intent of what the band laid down on record. Then after you've heard the actual song--it can be interesting to hear how they interpreted things live. Just a suggestion for future reference. Especially in a case like Yes,who alter the actual song greatly when playing live. Cheers, T

This is from their third album, The Yes Album recorded by original members songer Jon Anderson, bassist extraordinaire Chris Squire (RIP, the only member on every album recorded while he was alive), drummer Bill Bruford (later a member of several other bands, now retired), and keyboardist Tony Kaye. Guitarist Steve Howe joined shortly after the 2nd album appearing in video for songs he didn't record. The keyboardist here is Richard Wakeman, who replaced Tony Kaye.
The song itself doesn't start until the whole band comes together for the staccato chords "duh dude du dun duh...." The guitar solo section is dramatically different from the album, but most of the song stays true. Yes, Yes can play.
They chose the name Yes because they wanted to make a positive statement.
Chris Squire is my favorite bassist. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after he died. My second favorite bassist, Geddy Lee of Rush, subbed fir him on one sing. Guitarist Steve Howe played bass for a song from when he wasn't in the band.

Yes... The group... Has the greatest keyboard player alive according to many. He and Keith Emerson (who you saw in concert playing 2 keyboards across from each other and that drum solo by Carl) were friends. Both at the top of polls as #1 at any given time.
RIP Keith Emerson & Greg Lake. They died 7 months apart. Keith in March 2016, Greg in December 2016

Found a couple of good ones but Keith was a leader and showman and many other things which put him above almost anybody else. I did say almost. There are other greats that deserve to be up there but these 2 I found may not be #1 but they are fascinating.

Yeah, I was wondering what was going on the first thirty or so seconds - it wasn't quite instrument-tuning, but it certainly was chaotic beyond the 'usual' '5 soloists playing together'

Here's a rundown of the band: Jon Anderson (angelic sounding lead vocals and tambourine); Steve Howe (Lead Guitar); Chris Squire ( Tall Bass guitarist with wings!); Rick Wakeman (Keyboard wizard with the cape), and Alan White on drums whom you heard but didn't see much of in this video. There is Soooo much of their music you should hear. Please continue to check them out! They have been my favorite band since 1975. And Jon Anderson will ALWAYS be my favorite singer! I can go with that. But you really have to put it into categories. Like where do the Stones fit in? The Beatles, Yes, Rush, and a band you may have heard of, Band-Maid. They have over 130 songs, mostly awesome hard rock (progy in some cases) songs. And about 20 other bands would have to be posted on the "best" list, too! 🤘😂

YES weren't a radio band because they were very experimental, mixing together Rock, Classical, Folk, Jazz, Atmospheric styles with atypical poetic esoteric lyrics. Hi Kathy, Lulu, and Donna, I fell in love with Yes' music when I was on the verge of being a teenager in the 1980s. They had come back with a big hit then, "Owner of a Lonely Heart," which led me to exploring their music from the 1970s, and that music blew me away. I think what they accomplished from about 1971-1977 is some of the most powerful, enduring, transcendent music of all time--loved it back then as a teenager, and love it now in my 50s.
Yes were formed in the U.K., though they've also had band members from the U.S., Switzerland, South Africa, and Russia pass through their ranks (and, had the famous composer Vangelis joined them, which he almost did, Greece). At one point, the two members of The Buggles (known for "Video Killed the Radio Star," the 80s hit that was the first ever video played on MTV) joined Yes (and the resulting album, "Drama," is also pretty great). Not too many popular music bands can say all that about their history!
Guitarist Steve Howe is unique in that he plays mostly country & Western guitars like the Gibson ES-175 here and also plays a Fender slide guitar on other tracks. Still one of the fastest guitarists I've seen in concert way before it became the trend in rock music.

Man oh man, you guys just stepped into a time machine and landed in the early seventies. The blurriness in the video, that's how three quarters of the audience was seeing the band. I was a sophomore in high school in 73 on Long Island. We take a train into Madison square garden on the Long Island railroad. the train would stop at each town and more concert goers we get on at each stop. It got to the point where the train conductor wouldn't even try to collect money. Whole train cars of long-haired crazy teenagers smoking pot, drinking beer, and other mind-altering drugs. When you got to Manhattan, the train stopped at Penn station and Madison square garden was built right on top of the station. You wouldn't even have to go out on the street to get into the garden, just up a few flights of stairs. For yes concerts, with their type of music, it was less beer add more psychedelics. There is no way to fully describe a train ride into the garden for a concert. This video was yes and the psychedelic early seventies at the height of their powers. Back in those days, music companies allowed the musicians plenty of freedom to be creative. Yes was one of the bands that was best at taking full advantage of expressing their creativity... And during that period they oozed creativity, legendary music just flowed out of them. I must admit, I did chuckle when I saw you had never heard of yes and picked a live version from 1973. Now that's diving into the early seventies head first.

With early YES, it is probably better to listen to the studio, the live stuff is basically proof that they can actually play this in concert.

My all-time favorite band. But why would someone suggest an old analog recording to introduce y’all to this music? Stick with the amazing studio recordings until you can appreciate the complex mastery that Yes is.
They changed their style to a more pop-rock sound in the 80s and had a huge hit with “Owner of a Lonely Heart”. Donna would likely recognize that.
I was 14 in 1988 when I started high school and despite loving modern rock at the time it’s also when I got into 70s classic rock and progressive rock like Yes as well.
They really are one of those bands that every member is exceptional at their craft!

Absolutely brilliant choice . Geddy Lee of Rush said Yes were the only band he would stand in line to see. I've seen them live countless times here in the UK and this track, especially Steve's solo, was always a highlight. This is the classic line up with Rick Wakeman on keyboards so you can't go wrong. They always sounded like they had about 10 musicians playing. Rick Wakeman still performs Starship Trooper from the same album.

Going into the 1980's, Yes drifted apart with various members moving on to other projects but after some time, re-invented itself with some new faces including Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (The Buggles). As a result, the music had quite a different sound from the earlier albums, much to the chagrin of some hard core, old school fans. Regardless, what they have contributed to the musicscape of the last 50+ years is nothing short of epic. I'm so glad that you have had your first taste of Yes, there is so much more to enjoy. I recommend a live version of "And You And I" from the "Union" tour.
Much respect to y'all for tackling this one. It's definitely not anything close to straightforward. And it would make sense that Donna is the one who may have heard of this group. :-) (And no need to apologize, Kathy. Good on you for recognizing this!!! And Lulu has obviously been affected by Yes!)

Great band and reaction. If you really enjoyed the song, I would suggest listening to the studio recording off of the Yes Album. The live version is awesome and it's great watching these guys play, but you can hear the individual instruments better on the studio version. Just my opinion.

Nailed it ladies! Great comment, and yes, they ARE great musicians. Or rather were. Chris Squire on bass (with the cowboy boots) is no longer with us. Rick Wakeman is on keyboards and Jon Anderson on vocals (Jon and Vangelis). Steve Howe is the magical lead guitarist, Bill Bruford on drums. (think it was him or if not Alan White, who also recently passed). Lots of lovely tracks to choose from, I'm sure other subscribers can offer their choices. Keep doing it girls!

The way dude holds his guitar..Chest high, a technique I've seen used by many Classical /Spanish style players..And many of Howe's licks have that texture. Donna, Keyboardist is using that 2-tier Hammond..Love thier versatility/sound, ( So did Pink Floyd and Zepplin) but I never owned 1 'cause it takes 4 guys to move 'em! Catch more of Yes...they were the picture of what happens when rock meets art.

Welcome to the world of YES, 70's Progressive Rock personified. Definitely not for everybody, but if you're into it, these guy are pretty deep. There have been many different line-up configurations throughout the years, but this here is the probably the most popular. I was heavily into YES back in the day, and I went to eleven concerts over the years... These Guys are Pros, that's for sure!!!
Their most popular radio song was 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart' back in the 80's, and their most popular rock song would be 'Roundabout'!!!

This song is ostensibly an anti-war song (perhaps specifically about the Vietnam War), e.g. "on a sailing ship to nowhere," "lost in losing circumstances that's just where you are," "if the summer changed to winter, yours [the young soldiers drafted who had no choice to fight and suffer the war] is no disgrace."
Always liked the prog rock bands but in 1992 when Dream Theater released the album Images and Words it totally blew me away. I think you would like the song that started their career called Pull me Under but I would do the Album version as the video is cut short by about 4 minutes

Yes were a jam band that could create epic pieces of music that were challenging to play live; they have been a sort of musician's club, rotating members since their inception and debut album in 1969... They have no original members today.

Yes became acclaimed for their complex, epic arrangements and live musicianship after the release of their 1973 live album 'Yessongs'... considered one of the best live records in music history... also marking the recording debut of drummer Alan White.
Yes continued to record successful albums in the 70's like - 'Going for the one' (1977) and 'Tormato' (1978)... but internal disputes led to Yes disbanding in the early 80's after both Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman had left the band...
Asia was the band formed in the aftermath in the 80's.
In 1983, Jon Anderson (vocals) began working on a new project w/ Trevor Rabin (guitar) but soon recruited Tony Kaye (keyboards), an original Yes member... Chris Squire (bass) and Alan White (drums) signed on and they called themselves Yes... the new line-up released '90125' (their 11th album) in 1983 and it became a 3x platinum hit w/ the single 'Owner of a lonely heart'... Yes found renewed success in the 80's as they released the next album 'Big generator' in 1987 w/ the single 'Love will find a way'... But more disagreements led to more exits by the 90's after 2 more albums - 'Union' in 1991 and 'Talk' in 1994.
In 1996, the classic Yes line-up (Anderson/ Howe/ Wakeman/ Squire/ White) reunited for the 'Keys to Ascension' album & tour... followed by 'Keys to Ascension 2' in 1997... but the same internal disagreements led to both Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson leaving the band by 2004.
Yes continued to tour and record new music in the 2000's... eventually they reformed in 2011 after a hiatus w/ Steve Howe (guitar), Chris Squire (bass) and Alan White (drums) and recording 'Fly from here'... w/ Geoff Downes (keyboards) joining... Jon Davison (vocals) eventually joined Yes by 2014 for the album 'Heaven and Earth'.
In 2015, bassist Chris Squire passed away... Billy Sherwood (bass) replaced him.
Drummer Alan White had to be replaced on tour by Jay Schellen (drums) around 2016... Alan White passed away in 2022.
Yes released their latest album 'Mirror to the sky' in 2023... Former vocalist Jon Anderson often tours solo playing Yes songs in concert.
Newer Yes music, from the 80's, "Going For The One", "Don't Kill The Whales"! You might have heard these?

Rick Wakeman is a fantastic keyboardist. FYI, he plays the piano on Cat Stevens' "Morning has Broken". Hope you do some more YES
