      Hello I am looking for a medium sized bird. Budget around $700-800 max range for the bird only. The cage etc... is separate from that budget. What would you guys recommend? Thanks!

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 років тому +1

      Hi, price should not determine what kind of bird to get. Research the species that you are interested in and go from there. Each species is different.
      You have to consider what noise level you can deal with. Do you want a potential cuddly bird or more independent bird or one that can be both. Do you want a hands off bird such as a canary or grasskeet. You have to think of their diet and cage size but each species of bird deserves a huge cage with plenty of time out of the cage.
      Some medium sized birds are Conures, Cockatiels, Senegal's, Meyers and the Ringneck. They are all different with noise level and cuddly ability.

    I have a little bourke parakeet named Flapster. He was not born with any siblings, so the lady we got him from decided to just let us have him as a baby. It is the cutest thing to see how different he is from other birds, because he thinks he is human, and he even adopted a few of my traits. Stubborn, needs some alone time every now and then, and is very calm, much like how I am. I have never clipped his wings, but I don't have to because we prefers walking because I walk. He eats breakfast, lunch and dinner with me when I eat, and it is great to have his company. He tries to communicate with me, which I know all birds do, but it is almost as if he is trying to just have a chat. He responds to me when I talk, and never interrupts. He is such a legendary bird, and I am so happy that the 'bird lady' gave him to me. I would personally recommend a bourke simply because they are so intelligent and social, but not pushy.

    I saw these in another one of your videos and thought they were very pretty so I decided to look more into them, and now I have realized that this is definitely going to be my choice of getting a bird. I convinced my parents to finally get me a bird after awhile and I'm currently saving up money. I've switched choices from doves, pigeons, parrotlets, cockatiels, and now these beautiful bourkes. Hopefully I don't change any more because I'm almost at my goal of $300 and I can't switch once I have it.

    Am in the 2nd month of having my male, year and a half old, his partner passed away he was so scared. I spent the next few weeks sitting by his cage talking softly. He would not have much interest in things. I got an av light and the reaction was amazing he has come out of his shell remarkably, he will take food from my hand, loves a bath. At present doing the step up thing (2nd day). I was told by the seller he was a plumhead, I knew nothing about birds but read lots, I had a feeling his temperament was different. My pet shop were wonderful made phone calls, and apparently I have a bourke. Not out of cage yet, am getting a wider cage as you suggested. I am with him all day, he is certainly not lacking interaction. You are so right about the nibble.

    My first beautiful Bourke was a rescue called Mr. Pinks.... m y bird breeder friend said they just sit there, they're boring .... Mr Pinks was my companion for 14 years He was such a gentle soul and communicated in whistles , he would sit on the TV and complain loudly if it was too loud.... I also 'acquired' another male who was mainly grey with a sunset painted on his belly 'Skybird'.... he loved jumping up and down on a sweet tin...like a tap dancer and a mainly yellow and white Bourke called lemon Popsicle... who knew how lovely she was.... sadly they all flew away over the years.... I now have 3 Love birds ( also rescue)

    I just got one and she was hand fed and she's also very skittish anyway, she has her moments until I brought her home :")) she's very protective of her cage, but I think that's because she had a super small one in the store and despite being hand fed, she wasn't handled after she was old enough to find a home.

    I had one Rosey Bourk then eventually we got a budgie they lived in the same cage. At first they fought, but then they learned to get along and would follow each other around. The budgie, Cloudy, did like to chase Rainbow around a bit and I can see now Rainbow might not have liked that but it did keep her active. They both had a "trick routine" they'd do with me every night before dinner. It consisted of them giving me kisses when I asked "gi-me kiss gi-me kiss" and stepping up. It was so sweet. I didn't let them out all day because the door gets open alot, but they came out for family time almost every night. It was great for them to get sunshine so sometimes I would sit outside with their cage on the porch and eat breakfast there (all cage latches firmly secured!). Eventually Cloudy passed away and Rainbow was alone again. Even after the morning piriod, she would get really lonely. At first she would chirp very loudly and if nobody came, she would start whistling "swing low sweet chariot" and if still nobody came she would stop making noise and go sit in the corner of the cage and not do her tricks that evening. This broke my heart because I couldn't just be next to the cage all day. Eventually I learned that I could just bring her cage around with me. So if I went to work at the desk, she'd be on a chair next to me. Or at a table, or at a gathering at the house, she'd be right there- and she'd call for me if she wasn't. This with coming out for family time most nights, she was a happy little bird. Then around 9 she did eventually get a respiratory cold or something. She got better, than after a few months, got wores again. This happened for a while. I would give her more leafy greens, sunshine and even a little bit of vinegar in her water and that seemed to nurture her back to health. But then after a while she'd get sick again and it gradually got more intense. And one weekend we were away on a camping trip and someone else came to feed her. I guess the lonleyness was too much combined with the a relapse of the cold and we came home to find her passed. She was nine near ten when this happened. It was heartbreaking. But it's been a while and now we are considering another bird and reserching more about everything. That's my experience with Bouks. Thanks for the great video! It was so sweet hearing little Bourk chirps again!

      @@Loveofpets Aw! Happy early hatch day! Yes that is her. She was so sweet. She wouldn't let me pick her up, but she would often take turns sitting on all the family members. She liked picking at our socks and pulling my pencil away while I was drawing. Are all Bourks so interactive or was it a unique relationship because she was just one?

  • @Mapmoyle
    @Mapmoyle 3 роки тому +2

    Hi from Downunder. Nice video. I used to breed them and they are quiet-natured and good to house with finches. They like to pick the seeds from grasses and millet seed heads etc. A tray of coarse (clean) sand is also good for them to forage in if you sprinkle shell grit and seeds in.
    In Oz we just call them Bourkes (pronounced berk like in twerk not bork)

    I have 2 Rosey Bourkes, both males. I got the 2nd as a young bird and chose by coloring instead of DNA (not reliable). They are lovely, easy going birds. During the warm months here (WV) I have a large outdoor aviary, open on 3 sides and with a roof but when it starts coming into fall (as now) I move them all inside. I have 2 large cages and a smaller one. The Bourkes are housed with 4 Society Finches and two male Lady Gouldians. They all get along well outside. I try to match the birds up when they are inside by temperament. So, the Zebra Finches and the Owl Finches go in the other large cage. My Canaries are in a large cube cage. About the end of April/first of May they will be back outside in the 4x12 aviary. I enjoy your videos.

    We have our bourke with budgies, but it depends a lot on the individual birds.
    We used to have a female budgie that would chase him him around, but then we changed things around and he's for the most part with a playful but nice budgie, and he's slowly learned that he can put his feet down and let budgies know when he wants to be left alone.
    But I think if there's too much commotion, they never get the opportunity and time they need to learn this.
    We have a pair of budgies visiting now, and he absolutely loves them, keeps flying over to them, watching them and talking to them.

    That's an excellent video both for newcomers and longtime Bourke keepers as there are no books on them (at least not here in Germany) so thanks a lot! I've got four, started off with just a pair which I paired up with my late budgies. They did accept each other, however the budgies did stir trouble and cause fights every now and then, stressing the bourkes, so I wouldn't do that mistake twice. After the budgies were gone the male of the first pair suddenly grew a lot more colourful (blue and pink interchanging, he looks like a rainbow), that's all the proof I need to keep them among themselves. Said male also picked up a whistling melody from his breeder and taught it to the other bourkes, mimicking it makes him display courtship behaviour, which is quite adorable :3 I also find it fascinating how varied they are both in size and colours, that male I mentioned is pretty large while the smallest one, a female, is almost tiny as a budgie. Very sweet birdies and I wouldn't want to trade them for any other kind.

    I have an 8 year old R. Bourke named Rory; I got him when I was very young and didn't really understand birds. I have to agree that they are a very good beginner's bird although Rory is not nearly as quiet and likes to destroy toys a lot.
    I am learning a lot about Bourkes as or right now, because I am old enough that he is now my financial responsibility, and honestly this video helped so much with understanding why he does what he does. I was always worried something was wrong when he was waddling around on the floor of his cage, and why he liked being on the floor in general. The rest of my family always treated him like a budgie, and I feel relived to know that being 'cold' with regards to cuddling and physical contact isn't something I've done wrong.
    Overall, wonderful video, and I will be making some changes to his cage because of this (mainly moving his food dishes down to the bottom)

    Great series of videos you have and most informative too. Well done. Only one small comment if I may. As an Aussie, where the Bourke parakeet originated from (named after Sir Richard Bourke, who was an early Governor of NSW, Aust), the correct pronunciation is 'Burk' not 'Bork'. This is not by any means intended to be a criticism of your presentation, just trying to help out.

    Thanks a million for all your AMAZING bird videos. Your passion for birds always inspires me. It was a dream to have an aviary in my garden & I became a bird daddy to budgies, cockatiels, zebra finches & turquoisine parakeets in July 2020. A fantastically gorgeous Bourke will add a touch of pink to my aviary next week. (After sexing it, I will obviously find a mate for it). Your Bourke video was so completely informative. Hello, I am a nurse and I work nights and have for 14 yrs now. As a teenager and early young adult I lived in a household with a African Gray and multiple Cockatiels. I always loved and cared for the birds even though they actually belonged to my father and he was the main caregiver of them. I am now 44 and all of my adult life I have wanted a pet bird, and greatly missed having them in my household, because as a young adult my parents household, because I associate them with "home". I have always refrained from getting a bird though, because those birds were more loud and active during the day, and I have to sleep from about 930AM till around 4PM at least 3 days a week ( I work 12's so I only work 3 days a week). Recently in the past 3 years however I have gotten engaged and my fiance and I live together now. He works 2nd shift from 3PM- 11PM, so he sleeps also during the early mornings until around noon. All this said I have been searching for a species of bird that could possibly fit into our lifestyle without it being unfair to the bird, or the bird just completely making sleep during the day impossible for us. I had almost given up on the idea, but to be honest with u that was making me SUPER SAD! I just really want a household with a similar "feel" to the one I grew up with, where birds lived in the home, and there was that companionship and at least a little chirping in the background.. When I saw you're video talking about Bourke's Parakeets and how they are more active in the early morning and late evening a light came on in my brain and I began to think there may be some hope still for me to find a species of bird that we could live with and love on! I guess what I'm asking u is if u think Bourke's would work for us if I cared for and interacted with them for 45 mins to an hour every morning when i got home from work, and then again around 5PM after i woke up. My fiance would also be up and around from about noon until 330pm and then again around midnight, and I would be up around 5PM- 10pm and then again in the early morning from around 730am till around 930am when I went to bed... Do u think that between the 2 of us we would be home and awake enough at the right times, and do u think if they were on the other end of the house in a dinning room with to big windows and plenty of indirect light that they would let me sleep from around 930AM until around 430PM at least? What are you're thoughts about this working out for us, becauseif these birds couldbe the rightbird for us I would be so happy!???

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 роки тому

      Hi, birds make noise all day and won't be quiet if you are sleeping. They need 10 to 12 hours of uniterupted sleep. Bourke's are more active in the morning and evening but do make some noise during the day. They are not loud though but if you are a light sleeper the noise may bother you.
      I find their noise relaxing and can sleep through it.
      If you decide to get a Bourke two is better so they can keep each other company

    This was an informative video! We don’t have any experience with birds but want to adopt two (while young) in the future. Just not sure which one to pick. Budgies seem awesome, but Bourkes and Catharina parakeets seem great for beginners aswell. Which one would you recommend? We do like having some sound in the background, and they will be able to fly for a few hours every day, but it would also be nice if they could entertain themselves here or there, especially when we’re on a holiday (of course they’d get visits from a pet sitter or family). We’d prefer to have them tamed, but mostly we love seeing them interact with eachother too

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  2 місяці тому

      They are all nice birds but completely different from each other in respect to activity, noise level and diet. Its hard to choose for you as I don't know much about your lifestyle. I suggest research each bird in depth and then decide. Bourke are the quietest, Linnies have huge droppings and budgies are always chattering and hardly stay still. Bourkes do not like to be touched at all, do not like to cuddle. Linneis and budgies may like it but some do not like it at all. Budgies are the most active out of the three species. Hope this helps.

I bought it quickly because after watching several videos, they have a calm character and they will not conflict with my finches. I also watched your videos and saw how cute they sit on your finger and trust you. My birds are wild. and I don't know how to work with them. During these 2 days, I saw that one of the birds is more calm and is not very afraid of me, but the other bird (I think it is a boy) is afraid of me! what should I do? I have had my Bourke about 6 months now. We got her from a local family owned pet store and she is hand tame. Lately though, she has been growling occasionally when getting her in and out of her cage. Mostly she growls at the dogs (we keep them separate of course) but she doesn't like them around the base of her cage. Has anyone else experienced this? It makes me feel bad, like she doesnt enjoy being around us. She is otherwise acting normal, eating drinking and making her normal chirpy sounds. She is very sweet and never bites. I have had budgies my entire life but this my first Bourke so this little growling sound is new to me lol

Budgies, love birds, gauldians, canneries, banglens, and zebra finches, two kinds. But thy are all pairs.
