    My little guy is 8.5 years old and has been part of our family for 8 of those years. He has been out of his cage interacting with humans for about 80% of his days and spending time in an oversized cage outside of that, so he is VERY social new people, will become visibly attracted to people upon mtg them for the first time (is seemingly attracted to females and males alike. He will show love by whistling and making special sounds and will regurgitate his food to them when very excited. He craves constant attention, however will crave his in-cage time to nap or rest in between. I have never seen him use his feet to eat and have never seen another female, so not sure about the color of them compared to a female

    Hi! I'm a bit late to the party but I wanted to confirm most of your observations. My wife and I are the happy owners of a male and female superb parrots: Glitch is male 2 year and a half old, Patch is female, one year younger. I can confirm that females usually have lighter feet, and also considering a friend of ours who has a female, one year older than Glitch, they seem to get lighter with age. Another way to tell males and females apart before the colored feathers appear is the way they keep their head feathers: females seem to keep them "tighter", males "fluffier", making the head seem bigger most of the time. We brought Patch home at 1 1/2 months old and we were pretty sure she was female because of the shape of her head, which was different than Glitch's. Also, the behavior is very telling: Glitch started making noises different from his "flock call" and walking around "parading" as early as 3-4 months old, Patch somewhat enriched her vocabulary significantly later, and sometimes goes "on parade", but slightly differently, and much less often. Glitch grew his first yellow feathers at 8 months old and was fully colored by 1 year and 2 months old. We used to call him "leoparrot" in the months in between. 😀
    What's fascinating is that despite being the same species, they're almost night and day in character. Both are adorable, but each in their own way: Glitch isn't much of a talker or singer like Malibu (perhaps because both my wife and I are pretty quiet people) but he's always muttering something, always vigilant, always calculating his every move with the utmost precision. He also used to be very clingy in regards to his humans, also pretty rebellious in the period between march and may, so that's why we decided to get him some bird company.
    Patch is about the opposite: she's sweet, trusting, obedient, but also carefree and sometimes totally reckless. As much as Glitch is attracted and has his attention absorbed by humans (he seems to adore strangers and almost always goes to greet them immediately), Patch doesn't seem to care all that much about humans (although she's curious and fearless as well) but she seems to make friends immediately with other birds. Our friends' Barraband female is pretty shy and mistrusting of strangers, but within the day we spent together with our friends and their parrot, we could see Patch approach the newcomer and invite her to fly together... that was very sweet. Glitch on the other hand stuck to the human newcomers all the time and didn't consider the female parrots.
    Glitch and Patch started off pretty antagonist, with him often bullying her (it was perhaps our mistake to make them meet out of the cage on day one, with her being a baby and barely able to walk - although she already was an excellent flyer) but in a few months she learned to hold her ground, and in these last months, after one year living together, they're finally getting along... mostly. Glitch has an interesing "older brother" behavior: he's constantly watching over Patch, and even came looking for my help a couple times when she got in trouble... because she gets in trouble pretty often. 😀
    All in all, having these two as pets is a joyful experience, I think I can speak for every member of our 2-bird and 2-human flock. 🙂

      Thank you so much. Glad to hear from another Superb owner and hearing about their personalities and behaviors. It's very interesting about the foot color. So now we know that males have darker feet. I haven't found any information about foot color and now we have it, it's so exciting and interesting.
      I have noticed Malibu and his head feathers. He raises them when excited.
      Do your Superbs use their feet often to hold food?

    • @WizardOfDarklands
      @WizardOfDarklands Рік тому

      @@Loveofpets I forgot to respond on that one (and also wanted to share many other things but my comment was already pretty long 😅) - no, neither of our parrots use their feet to manipulate things very much, but they sometimes do, more for playing than for eating. Every time they lose a long feather, both can't help playing with it as if they were smoking a cigar, it's pretty funny.
      What I wanted to point out about the head feathers is that the resting position is different beween males and females: I think the head is the same shape because it looks similar when they keep their feathers tight, but normally the male's head *looks* bigger and makes a more "cylindrical" shape with the body. The female on the other hand seems to keep her head feathers tighter but her body feathers more relaxed, making her look... somewhat chubbier. 😁 Patch also weighs 20 grams more than Glitch although she looks a little smaller. That being said, both have their weird behaviors: sometimes Patch puffs up her head feathers assuming more or less Glitch's general shape, starts tweeting like crazy, to which Glitch often responds by hiding and even turning his yellow patch away from her and against the wall. On the other hand, Glitch usually goes totally berserk when he sees you manipulating whatever bright yellow object.
      Both are *very* quick learners: Glitch has more experience and is more interested in human things, and although we're only teaching him simple tricks for the time being, we only need 4-5 tries before he understands what we want him to do. Lately we're inviting him to grab his toys with his feet. Patch doesn't care much about tricks (because she plays a lot on her own) but we're teaching her to respond with a tweet when we call her, because she often hides in high and narrow places and she caused us more than a scare by not giving a damn when we call her for minutes.
      So, there goes "volume 2" of my observations. 🤣 Do you have any suggestions about teaching a superb parrot to talk? Glitch says his name (all day long), also "pirati!" (that's how we call him to our shoulders) and "al gabbio!" (italian slang for "go to jail!", we tell him to go to his cage in that manner because he's a little green criminal) but other than that he mostly talks like a Minion from Despicable Me. Which is funny, but we'd like him to pick up a few more words as well.

      Thank you so much for the information. We can all learn from each other.
      Malibu loves to sit close to my face and listen to me. He learns so fast to mimic. I also pair words/ sentences with actions, such as do you want a shower and once he is in the shower I repeat take a shower.
      Also when I take him outside I say want to go outside and once outside I repeat go outside or I am outside.
      He also asks for a cookie. When I give my birds a treat I say do you want a cookie And then repeat the word cookie yummy once they are eating it. My King Parrot is best at asking for a cookie, lol
      He knows lunch time is cookie time. It's not an actual cookie though, I give them pine nuts, almonds, walnuts or a nutiberrie.
      Here is a video of Malibu listening to me to absorb the words

    Thank you for highlighting the Superb Parrot. I've kept a Barraband as a pet for over a year now, his plumage is very distinct and he certainly is a character. Nozzy seems to contradict some of your observations whilst cementing others. He only wants to be touched or ''stroked'' on his terms, otherwise you get a forceful and painful peck. He did try your chop recipe (and various fruits) for a few days but then got, seemingly, bored and was more than happy to go back to his diet of dried seed of various sorts. Chewing? He will not stop and his latest thrill is the one wall we have papered. Wallpaper and any cardboard is fair game apparently. He is fine with guests, even over-inquisitive, except for my 3 year old grandson who he appears to be exceptionally jealous of. You cannot have him out of his cage when cooking or eating, he steals the food off your fork and eats both wet dog and cat food. Licking cat biscuits and throwing them on the floor is a very annoying habit.
    My wife and I are fairly certain that he knows two words which I will refrain from assaulting you with but I get the blame (so what's new lol).He plays with my dogs, has the 3 cats terrified but otherwise has the run of the whole downstairs. Believe you me, he gets plenty of exercise as he is out of his cage more than in it.

      Thank you for contributing information about the Superb. Nozzy seems like quite the character. My plum headed parakeet eats the dogs food wet and dry but Malibu hasn't tried it yet, lol

      It could just be that, the more freedom he has, the more inquisitive he becomes. His little brain must be working overtime 🙂

    I used to have a big flock of cockatiels, but lost them all but one within a few month. I was devastated, as Sam, the only surviver, was. He stopped eating and talking, so I got another tiel as his companion. They are pretty happy now. I have a question for you: these two boys are daddy's boys, and I miss my bird companionship. Which bird would you recommend for me to take in? My tiels are out of the cage all day and only go in the cage at sleep time, but our apartment is big enough to keep two species separated. Would you suggest a caique as a bird For me? Or there is another species who would adapt better? Maybe a conure? I don't want a larger bird,,Malibu's size is the maximum i would want. Or maybe a ringneck? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    • @Sofia-eq9rl
      @Sofia-eq9rl Рік тому +2

      Green cheek conures tend to get really attached to their owners and are known to be cuddly and active, however they are a bit on the noisy side. If you want something a little smaller and quieter parrotlets are good too. Lastly if you want something on the small side that isn’t so active and loud, linneolated parakeets are another great option. Those options are my top 3, try looking into them and see if any are a fit!

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  Рік тому

      Its hard for me to recommend you on which species is best for you as they are many variables that you have to consider and many questions that I would have to ask. Make a list of each species that you are interested in and list the pros and cons of each one. Then when you narrow it down do lots of research on each bird. I have a variety of birds on my species spotlight videos that you can watch.

    Hello, I have been thinking about getting a baby lovebird but the bird seller said they have to check to see if any friendly baby lovebirds are available. They said they may have baby lovebirds that they call "biters", birds that are more aggressive and bite but, which I suppose wouldn't be suitable. I'm a little confused, can lovebirds be born either friendly or aggressive? I thought lovebirds could be trained and tamed when they are babies if they bite. Do you have any advice about this? Thanks!

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  Рік тому +1

      Hi, if raised by the parent birds and not handled much by humans then it's normal for them to be frightened of humans and their defense is biting.
      Hand fed and hand raised birds are more friendly. Some that were hand raised may turn out to be biters, especially the females.
      It's best to get a just weaned baby that was handled often.
      Baby Lovebirds due nip though, however it's most likely they are playing or testing their boundaries.
      My lovebird was like that when he was a baby, however he is a sweety now

    • @eaglebjjhjk

      @@Loveofpets Ohhh okay that makes sense! Mine just got his colors. Pet store said he's hand fed. At home he's very docile, but chirps along daily when sun is out. Problem is hes scared to death when approached. Ive tried my best to be slow and soft with him, but he freaks out if in cage and flies away when out of it. How does one tame a bird that won't let you close? Oh, he will relax when i take and replace his cage water bowl. What can I do? One last thing, WHY does he poop in his water all the time? Thank you for any help. Best wishes.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  18 днів тому +1

      Some birds that are hand fed don't necessarily mean they are tame. It would depend on how often the bird was handled and socialized. Some hand fed birds revert to being wild/ not tame after learning to eat on there own.
      It can take a while for him to get used to you. If he has his colors then he is over 18 months.
      He poops in his water because he likes to sit there. Move his water bowl to somewhere else in the cage, preferably lower as birds like to sit higher in the cage. Put a perch where the water bowl was.
      Find out what his best treat is. Mine love pine nuts, wanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, safflower seeds and almonds. Avoid placing favorite treats in the cage in their food bowl and only use them for taming and training. Start by offering the treat through the cage bars and then let him out and offer while out. Call your bird while holding the treat and he will eventually come to you and trust you.

      Hi, Malibu doesn't bite and they are not for being nippy like a conure, however any bird can bite.

    Gabriel does not like hands. I can get very close to him but my hands must be behind my back, UNLESS I have a walnut or pecan pinched between my fingers😂.

      Hi, the breeders are in Ontario, Canada. It's difficult to bring birds over border, especially with avian flu
