When I grew up nearby Longwood was free and we'd all go a few times a year to enjoy all its wonders across all the seasons. A magical place.

Beautiful conservatory, plant collections and grounds! Love the architecture of the conservatory ~ it reminds me of the Temperate House at Kew Gardens here in London. Looking forward to your follow-up visit to see conservatory & orchid house in more (peaceful!) detail. About 2yrs ago I had the rare experience of having the Palm House at Kew almost entirely to myself, save for the company of the prettiest songful Robin following me around...all courtesy of the serendipitous circumstances of an easing of 'lockdown' & an overcast day. It was magical.

Yes, the bronze and glass conservatories are exceptional, especially rare in the States. In fact, Longwood took great expense to build a 20th century bronze and glass edifice to replace the East Conservatory, a "modern" design reminiscent of the World's Fairs in the 1950s and 1960s. The "retro" replacement was more aligned with the classic design of the original bronze and glass architecture of duPont's first conservatories. In the Northeast we have only a few of these crystal cathedrals, notably Longwood's and of course the Enid Haupt Conservatory at New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. I was lucky enough to visit Kew some decades ago, even though the Palm House was closed for restoration. What a superb horticultural heaven.

@@giardinodialberi8751 You have some amazing & beautiful landscapes, spaces, structures & plantspeople in that part of the US. Summer has such a gift for researching, gently seeking them out, and evoking the genius loci of the places visited with her unique narration. All along with Sander of course, who has such talented singular photographic skills in showcasing them to their best. Summer & Sander are an absolute dream team for such tours!

If you liked the old orchid room, the new orchid display will overwhelm you. Debuting just weeks ago, it is much larger, and even includes a seating bench so you can enjoy a panoramic family shot of Orchidaceae, before you follow a more careful circuit to inspect each plant. Very classy.

Having gone to Longwood a couple of times, I was kinda surprised to see such a short video. You definitely need to go back, and make sure you have the whole day, it took me a whole day and I was just admiring the flowers. I haven't seen the new orchid house, so I guess I have to go back too!

Longwood Gardens was a part of my horticulture inspiration growing up. I was lucky to intern there as an arborist in 2012. I hope you get to go back and get a full tour of the grounds and conservatory. The conservatory extension project is so exciting too. They will have giant water Lillie’s year round!

You guys have all the fun. Used to... stroll through Botanical Gardens each weekend w my plant crazy Mom. She waited for her catalogs from Holland each year and filled her garden like a flower orchestra. Trees, bushes and flowers bloomed at different times. Later her garden was listed on a list of gardens to visit in her area. Lots of people spontaneously parked their cars and talked to her about her beautiful garden. She must have been so proud of her work.
Maybe that's your future too. 💐 (... or just one of your many interests)

Only once a year? You might want to go quarterly, or even monthly is best. The scenes outdoors progress through seasonal changes and the displays in the conservatories change frequently.

Hi Summer, I would like to ask why they burn down the land? They do kill this way insects and little mammals also. So why publics gardens would do that? And I also would like to ask you about your oponion in this matter. It is hard to say it is good for plants and animals that lived there. Thank you. ❤️

About the Monstera deliciosa in the duPont house at 11:23 timestamp: I happened to be there this spring when a landscape architect told me that Monstera was the oldest plant on the property. I'm guessing he meant the oldest plant in any Longwood conservatory, since the majestic trees in Pierce's Woods on the other side of the house would have predated anything that Pierre duPont established indoors. Visiting tip: avoid weekends, especially in the latter half of April when the Flower Walk explodes with color from tulips and daffodils and much more.

super inspired by the forests there, went on an absolute rampage to remove invasive today, i am literally running out of space to plant new trees but the urge to get every single native tree is unending lol. i wish i knew where to find native beech trees with a resistance to it, as i've done for chestnut and elm here, luckily there are still a few massive (like, 2' caliper trees) elms, even after losing the biggest one a couple years ago
also wow that's a beautiful conservatory
