Thank you for this beautiful tour of our Orchid House. It's always great to see Greg light up with enthusiasm when he shares orchid stories with other passionate plant people. You really captured some great information about our orchid collection, our greenhouses, and all the amazing stories about the world of orchids. We look forward to hosting you again!
Awesome tarp doors! They remind me of the Star Wars doors - they sound similar to some of the doors in KotOR (@32:45). I Would love to see a 30ft Sobralia! (@44:10) Looking forward to Orchids being adapted/selected to epiphytically grow on every plant/surface in Longwood! :D ⸘Y'all have given me an excellent reason to come visit out east with the family, thank you‽
This is one of my FAVORITE videos that you have made on these field trips. What a knowledgeable, friendly, and driven interviewee - thank you Greg! The varieties that were shown were absolutely gorgeous and seeing the passion in his eyes with Longwood releasing their own hybrids. Summer, you are one of a kind. Thank you for bringing this amazing content to us.
Greg Griffis is extremely knowledgeable! I had the pleasure of having a personal tour by him back around 2017 at Longwood. He had great ideas and grew orchids well going forward. He also does great talks on orchids! He is definitely an asset to Longwood and the orchid community as a whole! Glad to see this feature.
As someone who's killed so many orchids, I'm always in awe of people who can grow a collection of them. They're such fascinating plants. Also, it kind of makes me feel better that even Longwood has to have a specialist take care of them haha.
This is paradise for me! If I could turn back time, go back to being 12, when I got my first division and attached it to a tree in my garden, I would take a totally different career park and dedicated my life to doing something like this! Wow! I now grow my orchids in pots in S'ern Spain with many many challenges to overcome! Everything about growing orchids is special! Come and check out what is going on in my collection ❤ bienvenido a España 🥰
I've become obsessed with orchids and I love growing them. Such an interesting challenge. I was already thinking I needed to take a trip to Longwood but now I MUST GO ASAP. Thanks for this vid. ETA: I love this guy! His knowledge and enthusiasm is fantastic. I could listen to him tell me about orchids for HOURS.
A couple of things; when i was in high school i would skip school but not to go hang out at the mall or at home, i did what my friends called "educational trips" Longwood Gardens was one of my go to places to skip school. And it was super cheap for students to go. 5 bucks. And also i would skip school to go the baltimore aquarium.
I was always bummed about the fact that you usually don't pay attention to orchids every time you make a garden tour so I was really happy watching this video. orchids are amazing and my favorite plant category. Thank you ❤
Hi Summer Rayne, THANK YOU SO MUCH for dedicating an entire video the my favorite plant!! Orchids are my first love plant and I enjoy caring for them and watching them grow and bloom, (if I'm lucky). They have taught me the art of being patient and being rewarded with their extremely beautiful blooms.
I went to Rutgers Univ (NJ) 1972-1976. My friends and I went to Longwood Gardens several times sometimes invited behind the scenes. I know we went to the original orchid house. This is a fun video. Love the work you’re doing there. More videos like this please. 🥰🌷
Please please write a book! You are just awesome with all your orchid tales and how you tell them... When you are gone no one will care as much as you do about those people and stories. Please write ✍️
Loved this tour! Orchids are so diverse and colorful! Enjoyed the behind the scenes part of the video, too. The whole process from back room to display area and some of the cultural difficulties are important to know.
Last summer, I found a brilliant orange fringed terrestrial orchid growing in N. Georgia on an undeveloped lot along a dirt road. Other orchids in Georgia persist by being less flashy. All are unique & to be appreciated & conserved.
I carried a single giant white cattleya orchid flower as my wedding bouquet. It was the largest I had ever seen. It brought back great memories of my wedding day 50 years ago. Thank you for the tour! 💚
From choral to floral conductor! With fabulous facial hair to boot. Loved the behind the scenes. So many little trade secrets / tips that are useful for anyone.
THanks for sharing this beautiful Orchids garden collection tour.Orchids are really fascinating and also reminds me of my dear mother who passed away three years ago.She loved growing orchids.
Thank you very much for this Tour of Orchids at Longwood Garden. I see other posts mentioning Andy's Orchids on a Stick in Encinitas, Calif. Andy Phelps is the main authority collector, propagator and vendor of orchid species in North America. Please look into Andy's background and visit his greenhouses. You and We will be unlighted.
ROLL TIDE ,BLACK PEARL ORCHID...so so lovely.. I would love to be a bee in there...ty for this great series on LONGWOOD GARDENS...went there 40years ago...alot.. Summer love from alabama♡
i love the enthusiam of plant people, Greg was super entertaining to listen to. honestly i've spent so long looking over orchids as a group, though i do favor epidendrum (me internally yelling when you guys were standing next to one lmao), i really didn't know the visual variety they have, like i know orchids are a huge family but still.
I am booking a trip to PA now that I have seen this place. I watched the extra conversation at the end. Summer makes genuine friends every where she goes.
I love Longwood Gardens! Our family was members for many years. Well worth it! One of my personal favorite orchid--a very unusual specimen-- was in the old alcove in a square lattice basket suspended from the ceiling. The tiny blooms were on the ends of threadlike tendrils, much like a spider plant when viewed from a distance it had up-right like grassy leaves and the hanging down blossoms were enchanting. Thank you for this wonderful tour!
WOW! What an absolutely divine collection! These orchids definitely deserved their own special episode, thank you so much for taking us along behind the scenes. One day I'm gonna travel all over and go to all the greenhouses and collections I can, to see it all in person myself - until then, I'll live vicariously through you and these videos ☺❤
12:55 Dendrochilum are from parts of Malaysia, the Phillipines and Kalimantan, cool growing orchids that flower in cloud forests, very few survive the tropical lowlands
Your tours are the best. We are gardeners, we are plant lovers, we are Orchid fanboys and this share is special. Thank you for your extensive behind the scene peaks. And your host is such a knowledgeable passionate plant angel. And as for you Summer, you are a walking plant encyclopedia!
Great interview! It would be awesome to see a tour like this with the North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC) to see more about our local orchids and conservation efforts
Hi Summer, I just love plants, and Orchids were some of my first plants I collected as an adult, and I'll tell you something, seeing this video made me fall in love with orchids all over again, like seriously. 🥰🥰
Such a great in depth overview, you packed so much in 49 minutes lol! Though I believe the orchid at 14:14 is in the vanda genus not phalaenopsis. Longwood is now of my must visit list! 😍
Would love it if you would check out my collection in Spain. I have certain challenges to overcome, but am learning a lot through these issues and sharing what I am.dealing with, on my channel. Hope your day is fabulous 😃
It looks like this video may have been taken sometime after April. I'm trying to figure when is the best time to go to see a variety of orchids in bloom. A lot of fun facts about orchids from Greg in this video. ☺️👍
What a place! I haven’t seen any Dracula or Lepanthes (actually any miniature), which is interesting and kind of explains their conditions hard to keep in a greenhouse
