I think his best speech is still SAG acceptance where he said these about Adam Driver "I’m just so moved by you. You were so devastating in this film (Marriage Story), and you should be here." Yes, it should have been Driver, everyone knows that including Phoenix.
Mr Blaze I thought Adam was amazing too. He is. But after watching Joker, it changed my mind. Joaquin deserved it more than any of the others who were nominated. There should be a documentary made just about this speech. The Phoenixs are first generation Hollywood, they were poor, radical liberals and already vegan by the late 1970s, which was rare. If you ever happen to google early interviews with River as he broke through, and his family, you see he was the driving force for himself and his siblings becoming 'performers' to instigate social and environmental change. River wanted to write songs like John Lennon and be a musician with a message. The kids landed a talent agent and acting was where the money came from. As River developed a love of acting he realised he could utilise his fame for speaking out on causes he believed in (which is what he did consistanty) and use his money to fund environmental and community projects. He was the winner of one of PETAs first humanitarian of the year awards in 1990. The family have always used their famous surname to promote charities and causes. River continued making music, buying acres of first growth rainforrest and donating to social justice causes. For decades Joaquin has followed the same path, narrating environmental documentaries, serving on boards of charity organisations, using his name as a means to activism. The Phoenix family now run the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, which focusses on restorative justice. Its so touching that Joaquin chose to come full circle by ending his recieving Hollywoods highest accolade (for which both he and River have previously been nominated) with a lyric written by a young River Phoenix, ensuring his message he carried from a little boy was shared with the largest platform imaginable.

Mr Blaze I think it’s kind of unfair to compare joker to a movie like the avengers, joker is not really a comic book film just uses a character from a comic but like taxi driver and that other movie people compare it to, you don’t need a famous super villain to make the movie work whereas the avengers you need super heroes doing super things not just a policeman if that makes any sense. I probably didn’t explain very well
@sirdigbychickencaesar9482 because people like you. You have given up. I don't know your story and you may have plenty of reason to not have any hope. But the evil people in this world win when we feel the fight is hopeless. I am also guilty. I have no hope either. But it doesn't mean it is not true. It's just that not enough people are up for the fight. It's way easier to do wrong and we are a lazy selfish species that is destined to kill ourselves. But if we all stood up and actually cared enough about the human race then good would outweigh the evil, but it will never happen.
2016:Leonardo DiCaprio speaks of global warming in his first victory in 20 years. 2020:Joaquin Phoenix talks about animal welfare in his first victory in 20 years.
Licken Hunstman What makes you say they’re mediocre? If they were, how come they’ve been nominated many times over the years and then finally won an Oscar? We shouldn’t compare anyone to anyone, and we always should do our best to help and support each other, just like what Joaquin said in his speech. A-list actors are in their own class. DiCaprio, Bale, Phoenix and all other A-list actors are equally amazing, talented and unique in their own way. If you think they’re “mediocre” compared to Joaquin, that’s your opinion. But I encourage you to look up each of the “mediocre” actors’ performances that you’ve mentioned in a variety of movies in a variety of genres, and you’ll see how uniquely talented each of them are. E.g. DiCaprio in Basketball Diaries, or his role as Arnie Grape? Priceless. Raw acting right there. They’ve been in this industry for years, decades even. They’ve spent countless hours with so much blood, sweat and tears in their acting, molding, cultivating and making each of their character in each of their film come to life for our entertainment, that many of their movies reached international success and made global phenomenon time and time again, and their names will be remembered for generations to come. Not only did they win the Oscars, but DiCaprio voices his support for the environment, for the indigenous people and the voiceless people who have been drowned out by greed and politics, while Phoenix voices his support for animals’ welfare, how everyone deserves a second chance, and how we should do our best to help each other grow, instead of bringing each other down. That’s courage and bravery right there. They’re using their voice to support the common good, and they’re putting action behind it. Nothing about these guys are mediocre. These guys are all deserving of the Oscars from their longtime success and perseverance, to them using their voice as a platform for meaningful, relevant purpose, for a good cause and for the common good. Instead of comparing, we should be congratulating each and every one of them for a job well done. Hollywood is never the same without these guys, and we owe it to them for making such timeless, amazing contributions to the world, to the film industry, to the worldwide cultural phenomenon, and to humanity.

He said that River looked really pale and he tried following him but he lost him in the crowd. Also I just want to add another thing: River was actually meant to take Leo's biggest role as Jack in Titanic, or at least that's what James Cameron wanted. But sadly River passed away 3 years before the movie started filming, so Leo was the best 'replacement' for River. I recommend you go check out River because he was one talented guy! I agree with you though. His speech was something else. I never heard anything like that

The Joker is the second character ever to win the oscar twice being played by two different actors (Joaquin and Heath Ledger), the first one was Vito Corleone (played by Marlon Brando and Robert DeNiro), Joaquin should be proud.
I am not saying Heath is bad or overrated. But Academy would never give a shit about action or comedy film and he wouldn't have won if not for untimely death.

Yep, it reminds me of my fathers brother (my uncle duh) who died in a motorcylce accident 15 years ago. My aunt in law still visits my grandma and celebrates christmas with us.
No one can forget a death like that i know i wouldn't.
I'm not sure what video it is but i saw a woman talking about grief. She said that you can never move on and the grief never stops. You would forget that the person is gone for some time but the moment you remember again that he is gone, the grief comes back like it's just yesterday. And i fucking agree.

Should've introduced him as Joker
As he requested
Mr Blaze I think it’s kind of unfair to compare joker to a movie like the avengers, joker is not really a comic book film just uses a character from a comic but like taxi driver and that other movie people compare it to, you don’t need a famous super villain to make the movie work whereas the avengers you need super heroes doing super things not just a policeman if that makes any sense. I probably didn’t explain very well

Nice quote, but it's not true.
Oh how I would have loved to seen River progress in his career. Joaquin he is smiling on you and he could not have done a better job.

Joaquin Phoenix > Christian Bale and DiCaprio.

@@lickenhuntsman5338 in fact,Joaquin lost 14 kg for the role of Joker, given that he is already a vegan.
@The Abcool I love tom cruise so much but bale and Leo are something else
@@blaircomptons148 agree with everything you said.
I am just not a big fan of Bale.
