Hey friends! I hope you enjoy this one! I didn't clarify a lot with my mistake on the finish. I used a foam brush and put it on too thick. That was most of my problem. I would recommend Polycrylic instead of what I used. I'll link it below. What would you recommend using? Comment below to help others out.
My husband and I have been working on this project for a couple days. We don't have good tools so made do with what we have. We used some bead board for the central part and we shortened the overall height. Here are the things we struggled with. 1. The slats were not exactly the measure we wanted and required trimming. 2. The brads we had didn't hold things together so we switched to some U-shaped brads - better. 3. We had little gaps in several places but the trim covered that. 4. We were afraid of the French cleat but it worked out. 5. We had a really lame pocket hole jig that we fought with - need lots more practice. 6. Shortening ours kind of threw off the proportions and the overall look. We plan to use a watery white paint to get the washed look and then seal it. Yours came out a lot better than ours of course, but all in all, we like what we made and enjoyed doing the project together. Thanks for sharing it.
I've been looking at a lot of farmhouse bed build videos to get ideas for my own and I have found this video to be the best so far. I will be incorporating many of your ideas into my own final build. Thanks!
I downloaded his plans and made this last year... it turned out perfect. I used a dark oak stain, then diluted white paint and applied it to the desired look. super easy and fun. thnx for the plans.
Great work! i've been looking around trying to decide if i wanna build a headboard using pallets or just some store bought wood. Well after watching your video i don't think i wanna use pallets. I really like the way your headboard turned out! THANKS FOR THE IDEAS AND INSPIRATION
Just watched a handful of your videos and subscribed, you've got a great presence on camera. Very easy to watch, keep us informed throughout the process, just good content overall. I hope to get into woodworking someday when I feel like I have more time to dedicate to learning a new hobby. For now I'll settle for watching people like yourself create things. Keep up the good work!
I just love this headboard. I’ve watched your video twice now, once 6 mos ago, because I’d love to have this headboard...but I don’t have any experience with saws. Your design has given me some design ideas though! :)
I just ruined a project using a polyurethane stain ..so I had to laugh or cry when you Had problems with yours! Your headboard is beautiful… You gave me a lot of great ideas for mine… I hope I could do the trim work like you did! Beautiful.. just beautiful!
Good stuff bud!! I've always stained the first coat with a darker stain, let dry, then paint over it with white paint and sand lightly to weather the paint. Finished with a light coat of laquer and boom. Super quick and simple. Stinks that happened with that one coat stuff! I'll make note of that and never touch it! Haha!
2 coats of shellac to seal in the pitch since pine was used then milk paint over top. BLO over top that. Just like they did farm house finishes before modern finishes.
i know this is really old but.....by using the french cleat the way you did, didnt the top of headboard stick out farther from the wall than the bottom?? thx
Also, I researched polyurethanes amongst all the pros who use it over their painted furniture..and they all suggested Varathane Ultimate polyurethane satin finish ...and that’s all I use now on everything...you can even paint or glaze over the first coat if you make a mistake and then put several coats over that..I have to order it online from Home Depot..they don’t carry on the shelves in the store...I think it comes in a 2 quart set.
nice build, sorry about the finishing issue but it turned out real nice. my heart broke when the trim split, been there done that, time to pull out the 18 gauge trim nailer. anyhow, nice build.
Question: Did you use a 1x2 board that you ripped for the French cleat as described in the separate video? The headboard is heavy so I thought you may have used something bigger than that.
Made by Mitch found this as I’m searching for ideas for my headboard and this is my fav as I want to add trim! Could this all be done with a hammer and nails if I don’t have a nail gun? Can nail guns be rented from Home Depot?
Lauren. Yes you could do this with hammer and nails. It would be tough in my opinion but possible. Home Depot does rent air nailers and air compressors. Harbor Freight does have a Brad nailer air compressors that are cheap. I wouldn't recommend there stuff if you use it all the time because the quality isn't the greatest, however if you it is something you use on occasion it is worth it. Plus if it breaks they will replace it. I hope this helps. Good luck!
Hey Mitchell I used that one One Coat Polyurethane also on a quilt rack I built my grandma. It did the same thing but I was putting it over danish oil. I wasnt sure if it was me or the polyurethane.
Hmm that's interesting. For mine I was assuming it was user error more so than product. I put it on a bit too thick. I typically use polycrylic. That is what I should have used.
Hey Mitch, Your headboard turned out beautiful however I wanted to give you a tip on how to prevent bleed through or yellowing when you use white stain or paint. The polyurethane will always turn white yellow every time so to prevent that you can use kills blocker as a primer before you paint or Zinsser shellac as a primer & it will block out any stain or yellowing when using white paint. What’s even better is you can use oil or water based anything over it & get amazing results! if you’re using stain, instead of using poly urethane or poly acrylic use a wax and just wax the piece. I use wax from dixibelle or go to your local DIY store where they sell chalk paints or mineral paints & they always have wax available.
@@befmx31 YES!! That's exactly what I was talking about.. And thanks for the advice to get the K5 version.. i'll check it out.. and hopefully you can purchase this from Home Depot??
Looks great I really like the design and finish. Polyurethane always gives me a problem... Wood putty and I have become good friends - angles and I don't seem to see eye-to-eye and those darn wood splits on thin trim -- ugghh
Hey Mitch, great video, been thinking about building this with my wife, I am new to building with wood and i cant tell how long you made each piece that makes the inside of the frame? How long are they? and cant wait to see more of your videos, as far you give out great detail.
Great job! The headboard is just what I'm searching for, but unfortunately after checking prices on all the materials you list, not including stain or screws, it's exceeded the price of a store-bought headboard by about 70 dollars so far, and I'd have to pay someone to do it. :(
Watching you push the wood over the blade using your hands made me cringe. One slip and you could lose your whole hand. You should always use something like a pusher block to push the wood.
The nailing is weak. You should be using small brad nails/glue on the trim. That way you don't get horrible splits that make you look foolish in the video.

You come across EXCELLENT on camera, great voice!
I like the imperfect look. Makes it look aged. great job.
Thank you Michael!

LOVE your idea to sand inside edges of boards. Great look.Thanks.
Thanks Bluebonnet!
I’m so late to your channel.. but this is AWESOME and will now be our weekend project. Thank you!! 🤗
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing stings more than a new product boo boo. But it really looks nice and I enjoyed the video !!! Thank you
Thank you very much Cheryl!
I love it... happy mistake and all !!!!

You are very welcome Daniel. I'm glad it was helpful 👍
Love the headboard! Next time, it would be helpful to start out listing all the materials you needed with amounts. Also what tools you needed.
I like this video sometimes thing happen that are unexpected but the end result is a beautiful headboard.

Beautiful
I just binged several of your videos. Easy subscribe!
Haha. Thanks man I appreciate it
We are just doing one following your instructions. We made it wide as ours is a king size.

Oh no!! Sorry your project was ruined. I know the feeling lol. Thank you for the kind words.
I really liked the look of that weathered oak. I'm going to be making some coffins for Halloween decorations with some rough cut wood.
That is really cool. That will look good with the rough cut!
Awesome build! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for information and inspiration. Your headboard looks amazing.
Thank you Fay!
Beautiful job
Thank you!
Wow that was Amazing!! 🤩

Great looking project, Mitch! I'm sure they loved it!
Thanks Bruce!
This is cool... Such a simple design but looks great! I should make one.
Mitch are you going to WBC? I'm going.. hoping to meet others that I follow.
Thanks so much man! Yes I will be there!
Wowww...so pretty!!! 😍😍
I'm so doing this! Hanging it to the wall seems intimidating though. How can I put legs on it like traditional headboards?
Hey Mitch! Great plans. Just purchased a download. Please note your cut list above should probably have 4 1x6x8's not 3.
The headboard looks great, Mitch! That’s so frustrating when you’re at the final stages and it messes up.
Thanks Bruce. Yea it is frustrating. I guess it's all a part of the learning process.
Looks great, man. Another great video.
Thanks so much! 👍
i know this is really old but.....by using the french cleat the way you did, didnt the top of headboard stick out farther from the wall than the bottom?? thx
This is a super cool build!!
Thanks so much!
Dude, try a pin nailer for the smaller wood, I saw you split 2 pieces of wood trying to shoot an 18-gauge through it.
Lo ame!!! Lo hace ver tan fácil!!!

I will definitely have to give this a try. Thank you for suggesting this Lisa. I appreciate it!

Your welcome!👍
This is awesome!! I definitely want to try out this designs. Is this for a king? Looks like it but can’t tell for sure..?
Thanks Raul. Yes it is for a king!

I might have put it on too thick also. I ended up sanding a lot of it off.
What size nails did you use in your nailer?
You're rolling along with great videos! What do you think caused the finish problem?
Thanks Tony! I think I put it on a little too thick. I used a foam brush and probably should have used something different.
love it!!!!!!!
Looks good!!
Thanks so much!

Beautiful! Love ❤️ it!!
Thank you so much!
What size does the headboard you made fit...King? or Queen?
It is for a King size.
Where did you get that blue deep set angled screw hole thing? Sorry, have seen those before and wanted to get one for hubby for Christmas?!
Lisa - if you have not gotten an answer yet I think you are talking about the Kreg Pocket Hole jig.
He actually has a link to it in the Show More section. He links to the K4 version of the tool. Personally, I would get the K5 version.
@@befmx31 YES!! That's exactly what I was talking about.. And thanks for the advice to get the K5 version.. i'll check it out.. and hopefully you can purchase this from Home Depot??
Hi Lisa! Yes hope depot and I believe Lowe's carries it as well. Sorry for the late response. Thanks @befmx31 for jumping in!

Thanks Nancy! I'm right there with you. Wood putty saves the day. Especially for the trim splits.
Would love to know approx how much the whole project cost you.
Is this material for a Queen or a King Sized bed?
By the way! This video is great and very informative!
Thank you very much. This is for a King sized bed.
Where's the materials list? I could have sworn you said there would be a list at the end of the video.
Hey Tom, the materials is in the video description below the video.
know what came to mind, something you need to build - an air hockey table...
Hey Mitch, great video, been thinking about building this with my wife, I am new to building with wood and i cant tell how long you made each piece that makes the inside of the frame? How long are they? and cant wait to see more of your videos, as far you give out great detail.
Thanks!! The inside boards are 30 inches long. If you want the headboard smaller, you can adjust the size of this.
How much did this project cost?
I can't remember the exact amount, but i believe it was around $80.
Made by Mitch It looks really nice, thinking about making it! Thanks 😀
Just go to WoodPrix if you want to know how to make it yourself.
It was the hat that messed it up
Hmmm. Pocket holes..
bro I think I just found my design for my new Headboard
Great job! The headboard is just what I'm searching for, but unfortunately after checking prices on all the materials you list, not including stain or screws, it's exceeded the price of a store-bought headboard by about 70 dollars so far, and I'd have to pay someone to do it. :(
I know you can find solutions to this problem in the Woodprix plans.
You can use woodprix to build it in the cheapest way.
I've heard good feedback about the Woodglut plans.
ur a cutie!
I think you can learn more about it on Stodoys.
Watching you push the wood over the blade using your hands made me cringe. One slip and you could lose your whole hand. You should always use something like a pusher block to push the wood.
You skip that inner first trim so thumb down for this video
The nailing is weak. You should be using small brad nails/glue on the trim. That way you don't get horrible splits that make you look foolish in the video.
