Excellent job and awesome tutorial. My husband just finished out build yesterday! Thank you for your guidance!
Thank you very much! I'm glad I could help!
What a lovely touch to include the old handles. Really well done and explained nicely, thank you.
Thank you very much! :)
This is without a doubt the nicest result I've seen for a diy headboard from a door . It's really beautiful. I've been wanting to do this for years. Thank you for making the video instructions so straightforward. I think I can do this!
Thanks so much 😊
Thanks for your great tutorial. Found an old door at a resale store and followed along with your video. Now have a new beautiful new headboard.

Wow! Was scrolling looking for headboard ideas...glad I found your video! I've had a door like this in my barn for years! Lol. Going to start this asap...Thanks!
You are so welcome!
Hi! I want to thank you for your video! I was able to follow your steps to create one for a client. I am a furniture refinisher/painter, not a woodworker, but I did it! Thanks again!
Right on Gina! I love hearing this and congratulations!
Brilliant....I am going to give this a go !!
It was a lot of fun! @lisa griffiths

Thx for this tutorial. Great job!!! I have an old door that I want to make a headboard out of. Your video is going to be so helpful.
You are so welcome!
Very creative luv it! Foe continuity of the big picture, i would love to see you take this headboard to the next step and attach it to the bed/mattress/box spring frame.
Thank you! Will do!
Beautiful! Fingers crossed that I can get one made. Thanks for your tutorial.
Thanks Mila!
You guys do what my husband and I do. I find stuff I want made and get the info and dimensions. We build it together. Nothing like it, well almost. Lol. We’re both retired and we have the time. Love woodworking. Thanks for the video.
Teamwork makes it all worth while!
I am taking on the job of helping 2 great great nephews learn how to use power tools, and do some woodwork and refinishing of furniture. I'd like to take this project with the reclaimed door and teach them how to make this headboard. It may end up in one of my spare bedrooms. I do really like the tutorial you did, with the fast forward -- yet showing all the steps. Great video and I love the workshop you have. I can imagine the many things you have created in that shop! My objective is to create some space in my garage so I can have a 'space' for woodworking -- still have to put my truck in there though -- hopefully that transition happens this year so I can really enjoy working in there and creating projects to share with my family. BTW, I"m 67 -- and just picking up this hobby. My DH who passed almost 10 years ago was a great woodworker -- unfortunately I never had him teach me how to use the tools, so I am teaching myself now. I'd really like to learn how to use a router .... again, you and your wife did a marvelous job. I imagine your inlays loved the finished project. the old door handles on the sides was a great accent -- very unique!
What a great comment! Thank you very much. I will be 50 very soon and I am just learning about repairing plastics and working on motorcycles so I can totally relate to the thrill of learning something new! We are never too old to learn and try new things! Using a router is fairly simple and they are probably one of the more "safer" tools in the workshop. Congratulations on picking up your new hobby! If you get stuck or need help you can reach out to me on Facebook or Instagram. Cheers :)
Great tutorial!! I will be referring back to this when I get ready to make my door headboard!! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Thank you very much for the kind words! Enjoy your project :)
Love this one! I’m getting a door farmhouse headboard!

Thank you! :)
Beautiful!! I SOOOO want to do this!! I just need a door!! LOL I thought about making from a new door and using molding, but I really want an old door, something with character, something you know is old.
I love the doorknobs!! Would have never thought of that!!
Thank you for sharing! What a wonderful, thoughtful gift! Lucky parents! ;o)
Thank you very much! :)
This would be an awesome DIY project.
It's a lot of fun for sure!
Wow very fancy
Thanks Lori!
That door knob at the end is off the top awesome! Thank you for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much Janice!
Timely for my search. Looking forward to trying to replicate your build.
Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!
Thankyou for this video! Just saved extra old doors from our home to make a headboard! Very detailed instructions too! :)
Awesome Nancy! I love when things get re-used. Thanks for your kind words!
Nice job as usual, I always struggle with crown moulding etc on corners as I don't do much of it. Good trick with the door handles.
Same here Jaques...I don't cut crown molding often so it takes me a little bit to "orient" everything in my mind before I make the cut. Fortunately I did not waste anything on this project. Thanks again buddy and Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays
Beautiful, yal do excellent work!
Thank you very much!
For your pro tip, another thing you can do is change your miter saw bevel to a few degrees to make that same cut instead of using the little piece of wood chip. Great idea using an old door for this project!
Thanks man! The wood chip trick is more for production work because changing a bevel takes a lot longer than dropping a 1/32" shim. At the end of the day all those bevel changes add up to a lot of additional time, and in production, time is money. I've just carried that tip into my regular cutting because its quick and you dont need a compound miter saw to make it work.
Impresionante 😲 😲
Thank you!
Awesome I am going to make my self one lv it thanks u for showing me how to make one 🤗🤗🤗
You’re welcome 😊 Have fun @Marlene D
Nice!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!

Dude that's awesome!
Down Time thank you!
Is this a queen or a king size headboard? Absolutely love it!!
Kami, It's for a king but you could always make is smaller for a queen.
you are amazing
Thanks!
Awesome...
Thanks Laurianne Smith!
I actually love this upcycling and making your treasure out of unwated thing's 💯👌🏿🔥
#Following!!
Thanks! I appreciate your support!
Very nice. I was thinking that top board could be hinged some how for a secret storage. Hmmmm....
I like that idea! And it would be handy if there were an intruder (if you know what I mean)
@@BrandonLund exactly!😉
bravo c'est magnifique :)
Thank you very much!
Brandon, great idea and build! Do you ever run into asbestos paint on old doors and how do you deal with it. I would think a few coats of paint would seal it in and not be a danger.
Sorry, i meant lead paint.
I'm sure I probably have and when I'm in doubt, I just make sure to wear a respirator and cover it with a quality primer and paint. The thing you want to avoid is making dust by sanding. Your more likely to come across lead based paint when doing a project like this than asbestos. Some paints back then did have asbestos in them, but most were lead based. Seal it up with fresh paint and your all set...
Excellent build. Love the use of the knob. How did you mount it to the frame/wall?
I just through bolted the bed frame directly to the headboard. Its good and solid.
great video. what nail gun are you using
Thank you! It's a 16 guage bostich
Great vid Brandon! Q: how long did you make the "legs" i.e the part from the bottom of the door to the floor?
I dont exactly remember but this is how I arrived at it. I measured from the floor to the top of the mattress. Write down that measurement. Now measure the width of the door. Now just add those 2 measurements together and that's how long to cut your legs. I hope this helps :)
Nice!! How did you attach it to the wall? How is it attached to the bedframe?
It's attached to the frame at the factory location on the frames. Its not attached to the wall
@@BrandonLund Nice design and workmanship. Metal and wood. You are a man after my own heart. Mostly I am a woodworker but I also dabble in metal as needed. I have learned a lot from your channel. I recently had a defibrillator put in my chest so we shall see what that does to the arc welding. The company tells me I can weld up to 160 amps as long as it is at arms length. Oy!!!
Just be careful. I feel that a high frequency welder could be problematic. I think a transformer based welder would be safer but this is all speculation also. Thanks for watching and I wish you good health 🙏
@@BrandonLund Good point. I will do some research. Meaning, I will ask my buddy who is an electronics wizard. We are also come up with some sort of wearable Faraday cage using some copper screen. We shall see. 🤞
very very Nice I had the idea but didn't know what to do with it,,,,Looking for something coastal south,,,,got any ideas whicker maybe?
mitzi spicer gilliam thank you! You could add wicker over the raised panel areas or even a heavy fabric might look nice.
How did you notch out the board for the baseboard? Did you use a hand saw?
Yah, I just used a hand saw. We discovered we needed to do this once we got it to their house.
What did you use to fill the holes and hinge insets?? Bondo, Fixall??
Wood putty and epoxy
I wish you could make that for me. 😊
I wish I could too!
Thanks for sharing the helpful video! I found a door last weekend and bought supplies at HD yesterday but could not find 3.5" molding that was the correct thickness. Would 4" molding or a different thickness work?
Without actually mocking up the pieces to see how it would come out it is hard to say. I think it will work, but the reveal under the top piece of wood will be less. In other words, the wood on top will not protrude beyond the crown molding as far as it does here. If you go with a 4" piece of crown, you might have to go with a wider top shelf...possibly.
@@BrandonLund Thanks! Will make another trip today.
the true dimensions of 1x4x8 is 3/4 x 3.5 x 8
Hey Brandon! Such a beautiful Job. This is what we want to do. But what we don't know what to do is how to mount it to the metal bedframe! Could you show us or explain where you are bolting it to the frame ? thanks
We are mostly worried about the weight of the door and if the frame can support it :) Our frame does have the flat bits where you can drill it in.
So the "legs" on the headboard go all the way to the floor, so the actual door / headboard is actually supporting itself. In other words, if you leaned the headboard assembly against your wall then slid your bed up to it, it would look finished. But to keep it from tipping forward (onto the bed) I made sure the legs were centered left to right on the bed frame, then i just used a drill bit and drilled through the wooden legs into that flat bracket. I then fastened the wooden legs to that bracket using (4) 1/4" x 1 1/2" carriage bolts. I hope that makes sense. If not, send me a message and I will try to clarify anything you need. Thank you for your compliment!
I love it, but why didn't you center the panels?
Thats a preference. Trimming it so it was symmetrical would have made it too small. Adding to one end then trimming the other to make it symmetrical would have taken away from natural balance look of the door.
How do you mount this to the bed .?
The bedframe has a couple angle pieces that have a couple bolts that hold the wood to the frame
Brandon, just found your channel and really like the tutorial and the video step by step chronicling you did. I am NOT a carpenter, nor do I possess the kind of tools you do, BUT I do have a modest amount of creativity and a woman with a LOT of desires to have things done!!! LOL. This was GREAT! This does not look daunting, and totally feel more confident to try myself with the $15 DIY solid wood door picked up at a local Habitat Re-Store. Probably most jealous of your short cut painting equipment. I paint everything by hand. Happy Holidays to you!
Thanks Mark for all your compliments! This is a fairly simple project using a minimal amount of tools. If your from the U.S. you can have a paint setup like mine for cheap but you need an air compressor. I use it for EVERYTHING. Metal and wood. Harbor Freight has HVLP sprayers. Mine is just an inexpensive one made by Husky from Home Depot. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you!
Brandon,
How would you adjust your plan if planning to make a similar foot board. would you use 4x4 posts instead of 1x4 pine boards?
I would probably just build it the same...scaling down the height of coarse.
@@BrandonLund Thank you
Is this a queen or a king size headboard?
King. But you could cut it for a queen.
Is this for a king size bed?
Yes 👍
What did you mix our paint with to spray the headboard? Did you use latex or oil based?
I used latex paint and then added a "latex modifier". It allows most latex paints to be sprayed. If you go to your local paint store or big box store and tell them you need a latex modifier so you can spray latex paint, they will hook you up :)
What size boards are the end that goes to the floor? 1x4 or 1x6 You nailed 2 together to make the end post.
Hey Janet, I have a complete material list in the video description
What is the length of the end post.?
It's been so long I don't remember. I'm sorry
What finish was applied to it.. Like a clear coat or what exactly ?
I was just spraying regular latex primer and paint that you would use on interior trim in your house. Its thick, so you have to thin it down with latex modifier. It's what allows latex paint to be sprayed through a paint gun
@@BrandonLund Thanks bub.
Anytime brother!
I am building one just like yours did you know you can tell your age with a tape measure ?
I did not know that...?
@@BrandonLund you take a tape measure and fol it double and take end down to 124” inch mark take year you were on in turn it over and it will show you your age
@markdantzler6187 very cool! I will have to try it. Thanks for sharing!
What size is board you put on the top?
@markdantzler6187 Materials list:
1 Salvaged wood door
6 1x4x8 #2 pine boards (legs and horizontal pieces)
1 1x8x8 #2 pine board (top shelf)
8 feet of 3/4 x 3 1/2" crown molding
You will also need some Glue, 1 1/2" nails, 120 and 220 grit sandpaper, primer, paint and a way to apply the finish.
Is your bed actually going to mount onto that thing or is that purely for aesthetics? I purchased a bed frame from some dude on the street for a hella cheap price. 40 bucks for a king wood frame with pull out storage boxes. The problem is that it only included the sides and front so now I have to make the back part where the sides will hang up on.
@Eddie Arcega it's basically for aesthetics however it keeps the pillows from falling between the bed and wall. The headboard sits on the floor and the flanges on the metal bed frame attach to the headboard legs.
@@BrandonLund ic. Thanks. Well done job m8
Thank you :)
Hello! Is there a way to make this so it doesn’t attach to the bed frame, but keep the legs? Also you didn’t show the part when you cut notches out of the bottom of the legs, what are those for?
Hey Melissa. You could easily make this so it attaches to the wall similar to a picture frame but the weight is still being held up by the legs. An easy method do do what you mentioned would be to use a "french cleat". You can buy them in metal at most big box stores. The cutout you saw was an after thought. My mother and father in-law have baseboard molding that sticks out from the wall. I notched out the legs so the headboard would fit over the baseboards and slide right up tight to the wall.
Thank you for you quick response! Could you give an approximate list of supply’s need? Lumber only!
@@melissamonroy4155 There is a material list included in the video description :)
Thank you! I had to have my husband show me where the list was 😆
@@melissamonroy4155 Your welcome and thank you for your support!
Nice, what length did you cut the 1 X 4 X 8
Thank you. The length will vary depending on the door. It just needs to fit tight between the 2 upright pieces which are the legs.
what length are the legs
I understand it depends on the door but I quess what im asking is how tall should a standard be compared to the matress
Hey Brandon, very nice work. Did you mention the overall width of this headboard? Queen size?
Dave Gardner Thank you! The door measures 6'-6" and it was not cut. On a king size bed it was just a little wider than the metal bed frame.
I would have been more impressed if you had stripped the paint off that old door so that the sprayed finish would have been uniform. And I would have liked to see a molding at the bottom of the panel.
It wasn't built to impress you. It was built for the person who wanted it built this way.
@@BrandonLund - I love your reply to this complainer.
😁 thanks man! 😉 those type of negative comments remind me that there are people in this world that could win the lottery and still complain about having to pay taxes on the money LOL
Great work man! For the height of the headboard, you're just going off the dimensions of your bed frame?
Justin Lipscomb yes. I went just a little wider than the frame so I was sure to have enough material to attach the bed frame to.
7:37 you were holding the piece with your left hand, big no no no no!
And i still have 10 fingers and toes. Work within your skillset and comfort level.
Beautiful work!
Thank you very much!
How do you attach this to a bed? What hardware to use?
Hotrod Hog Most bed frames have a flat spot on them to attach a headboard. Drill it out and throw some carriage bolts through it and your done.
Frame for bed ??
It attached to a basic metal frame. Nothing fancy
