I've said this before and I'll say it again, there was a time a few years ago when I was a lot more emotionally unstable where my channel was the target of a dislike attack, and 40 of my most recent videos had a like/dislike ratio of 20:80. How did it make me feel? I didn't care, because the fact that it was from a dislike attack invalidates the entire negative emotional impact of the dislikes. Now I understand that not everyone as insensitive to dislikes as I am, but I believe (and I know people disagree with this) if you tie your emotions far too much within your numbers, and dislikes really make you feel bad even if they aren't "real", content creation is not the right hobby for you

It isn't just used to hurt a crators feelings. It's used to push a false narrative. There was a dislike campaign against trailers for Captain Marvel because of its woke star saying lots of dumb shit. Content creators on the anti-woke side of the culture war used the dislike ratios on the trailers as proof that everyone hated this movie and it would flop. The movie was a smash hit that made tons of money and is getting a sequel. Most actual moviegoers don't care that Brie Larson is annoying. It's like how on Twitter a few hundred people can get a hashtag to artificially trend. Dislike ratios are easy to falsely manipulate.

I love how they said that a lot of small and new creators were getting targeted by dislike attacks without going over the metric that most of them were channels that just aggregate and regurgitate web articles. I'm sure there are definitely some legitimate small channels going through actual targeted attacks, but a lot of them are just briefly hopping on a trend and people know that and want channels with actual heart, time and effort to rise to the top of the algorithm so that they can get the attention they deserve.

the fact that UA-cam straight up lies about it being for the creator, when in the comments of their announcement you see hundreds of creators voicing their disapprovement with thousands of consumers voicing their outrage, just shows they don't give a crap.
Now, I have given their supposed joke of a liaison a lot of shit for defending it, and he he has responded a few times. the issue is that one of those replies explained perfectly why UA-cam doubles down on this. They had already made their decision and it didn't need to go through their Liaison to ask the community what they thought.
UA-cam knows that there's not a single site, not one on the entire internet, with the same polish and features as UA-cam. even if the biggest UA-camrs cried out and talked directly to UA-cam, what are they gonna do? Go to another platform? There's none that gives them the same exposure, or even a salary for their troubles. UA-cam is effectively a monopoly, and they know it damn well.
UA-cam is no longer UA-cam and even though we know it, we continue to use it because there's simply no other sites out there that offer the same quality. UA-cam is a company, companies need to make money, and UA-cam goes about it in the most disgusting way possible, lying and spitting in the faces of the people who made them who they are today. UA-cam, is an absolute disgrace

It's the big companies that wanted this. They wanted to hide all the dislikes which for example, modern shitty triple A game studios get these days when they try milk money from people by releasing shitty products. Or when movie launch turns out to be a flop. Etc.
It's bad rep and bad for their business to have visible dislikes, people start asking "so why the downvotes"? And these exploitative big companies hate that- as that leads to further embarrassment and harder to sell their products.
Make no mistake. Google lives by ads. When Google aquired UA-cam, that's when UA-cam turned into corporate whorism machine number one. UA-cam doesn't give a fuck about the content you create, they care whether they can show ads and the more they get visibility, the more money they get.
Hence the needs for these big companies like EA games, Blizzard, it's for their profit to hide dislikes and of course UA-cam will bend, because it's always more money for them the more commercial they can make this platform.

I agreed with everything you said up until 8:20 or so. I fundamentally disagree with the idea that being an online content creator necessarily means "selling your mental health". No, you are selling your videos, and maybe a personality you've cultivated around yourself. The problem isn't that there are people who are just too fragile to be on UA-cam, but that UA-cam is deliberately draining their creators' mental (and sometimes physical) health. To go back to your warehouse metaphor, it's not that we're trying to get people who can't lift 50lbs to work in a warehouse, it's that the people running the warehouse are pushing people to overextend themselves, and all the workers have broken backs and collapsed discs in their spine because of it.
"Removing dislikes to prevent dislike attacks" is sort of like if the people running the warehouse claimed that the workers' back problems are from running to their break room too fast, so they're just going to get rid of the break room. There might be a hint of truth in there somewhere, but the solution is specifically chosen to absolve UA-cam of any responsibility for their creators. The problem isn't people just inherently being fragile snowflakes. The problem is that UA-cam puts chronic stress on their creators, via things like demonetization, false Content ID claims, and the algorithm selecting for daily content churn.

Thank you for making this. I’m disappointed, as I was hoping that they would reverse the decision because of all the backlash. Anyone who has engaged with YT for a meaningful period of time knows that crappy videos made by crappy people exist everywhere. Scams, dishonesty-its impossible to get away from.
And yeah you can’t rely on comments since the creator can monitor the comments. Which is good-if people are spreading negativity, scams, or inappropriate/unrelated messages, the creator should be allowed to remove their comments. But people with bad intentions take advantage of this.
UA-cam pays people like Shane Dawson, Dhar Man, and alpha male podcasts, while screwing small creators. They profit off outrage culture and know it.
Some of the best commentary videos, music videos, and podcasts I’ve ever experienced in my life are made by people with less than 100k subscribers and like a thousand or two likes per video. Whenever I need help with something, or want a deep dive into a topic of interest, I come here. I will keep coming here either way, and YT knows that, and since it makes no difference to them, they don’t care.

It's crazy to me that she calls the decision "controversial" controversy implies there are people on both sides.
In reality, the only people I've seen speak in favor of the removal are youtube employees. Not one single other person. That is not a "controversial" decision, that is a near universally disliked decision.
Also, I AM a handyman, and youtube is _amazing_ for saving time looking up parts and processes I've never used before.

I'm not a youtube employee and I'm neutral-to-favorable on it. The justifications make some rational sense. The counter arguments also make sense. Removing dislikes it is still pointless. If it's to "protect smaller channels", those small channels can still look at the video metrics and see what the true count is. On top of that, if there's a "dislike" mob trying to use the button, I doubt they will care if the public number is there or not, they'll still press dislike and move on. Hell they might be more inclined to press dislike since they don't know what the number is, might as well keep pressing it to make sure the creator sees how much it got disliked. Emporor Lemon made a great video about removing dislikes before they officially did it a while ago.

I totally agree with the opinion mentioned about how-to/repair videos. In order to learn how to fix something we need to watch a video, then we need the like/dislike numbers to determine whether the video will be helpful or not in the first place. I definitely dislike these vids if they are not helpful after all, or are dangerous, or don't show what's advertised. This saves a lot of time, especially when you're in a hurry to fix something. And those vids that show people working on those microwave capacitors can get people killed. I've seen a couple that offer bad bad advice, and I'm surprised they're still up, let alone that they're among the top videos after a search. The like/dislike thing in this regard may actually stop people getting hurt. It's no joke.
