Honor MagicBook Pro unboxing: Pro or no?

- The Honor MagicBook Pro is here, but is it really a pro-level device? With a 16.1in display and Ryzen 5 4600H it looks the part - but no GPU, no Thunderbolt, and some bog-standard screen specs make this a great option for a big screen on a budget, but not for serious creative work or gaming.

Not all of us need 4k and OLED, so please stop making it as if it's a must :)
What you say is true but to be fair to the reviewer he said that at this price point not having those things was fine. His review is based on Honor's decision to market this as a 'Pro' grade laptop ie. potentially having 4k or OLED which is why he talked about that. He's trying to help consumers! :)
For me as an Senior IT professional this machine is a perfect (mobile) desktop replacement for any kind of IT related stuff. The 6c/12t Ryzen CPU has enough power for daily tasks like programming, imaging etc. Moreover the system keeps cool caused by a double fan cooling concept. The Tech Advisor review does not cover important facts like cooling, battery performance under various conditons. The Honor Magic Book Pro is a well-balanced mobile system which covers the most daily challenges regarding IT assignments. And keep in mind the price/value ratio. You get 16 GB RAM, 512 NVme, 6c/12t CPU and a 300 nits IPS display with 100% sRGB for 799 € (preorder price, later 899 €) - I disagree with the verdict and conclusions of Tech Advisor.
I think a lot of this makes sense! Perhaps I focussed too much on how Honor was positioning the laptop - they're pitching it for creators, where it's not obviously a good buy. But as I think I said, it's got a lot else to like about it that will make it great for a lot of other people, just not the people Honor is marketing it for. If you don't need a GPU and just need raw CPU/RAM power with a big screen, it's very solid value - Dom
@@TechAdvisor The system is an excellent choice regarding a "workhorse" and indeed not a gaming machine. Honor/Huaweis marketing department fails regarding the positioning ;-) - I moved from a Thinkpad E590 (20 years experience with Thinkpads) to this machine without any regret. The integrated PC-Manager is much better/smarter than the crappy Lenovo Vantage maintenance app with an ugly UI. We will see how reliable this piece of hardware is :-)
Hi Ronald, looking to buy this laptop as a student but slightly concerned about privacy/data harvesting due to the origins of the Honor company. As a Senior IT Professional, what are your thoughts on this? Thanks
@@hughmcgrane8954 Data harversting (followed by personalized ads) is a quite annoying point but it has more to do with the OS (operating system) - in this case WIndows (home) - and the set of application onto your device. M$, Google, FB etc. are much more interested in your data than hardware manufacure companies. Of course some information like technical related telemetry data will be send by services running in the background. The Honor Magic Book Pro do not preinstall any bloatware or unnecessary services. Only the PC Manager - which can be deactived or closed - is running as a native Huawei application. This program manages the device driver (security) updates and some useful settings for the keyboard etc.
In Germany the notebook is on a high rank (pos. 14) compared to other current machines - For a better understanding pls use the in-built Google translation tool ;-) or drop your comments here :-)

what you have missed, in my opinion:
there is a niche, a segment in personal computers, which is exists everywhere from top to bottom, from phones to desktops to workstations. but not in laptops.
the segment is called "powerful cpu+whatever gpu"
this segment is actually very big. but laptop marketing tells me that powerful cpu mean that i am either a gamer or i desperately need a professional gpu. which is a total bullshit as you might think and you are right.
so, this laptop is unique. it delivers exactly what many people need-powerful cpu+whatever gpu. this is the main advantage. 45w cpu with integrated.
Yup, I think that's totally fair. I think a lot of people will get a lot of use out of this, but I don't think it's the people Honor says it's targeting with it. So it's maybe a case of poor messaging on their part - Dom
Exactly my thoughts.
Nicely done! Can it run Adobe illustrator efficiently?
I just bought one week ago. I am a student and in this situation i believe we are in video conference every single day, but trust me it doesn't really matters to you later on when you get used to it. As i told am student so i have to really do office stuff some of the literature read up and some time data analysis and sometimes multimedia usage. Okay coming to the fact what leads me to the decision to buy that according to my budget.
1. A usb type c charging port supporting out of the box fast charging in this price category. A decent mounted hdmi port.
2. A better big display for usual work.
3. A decent battery backup
4. Light weight
5. Off course a better performance vs my old one
6. A fingerprint sensor considering putting the passwords in front of the people when my laptop boot up
7. N the best among price category i noticed really best speakers on it. Which i never expected before going to have it. Yeah its not exactly like macbooks but i guarantee the best than competitors.
Thanks for reading. Let me know by your thoughts.
At Wht price u buy it for bhai???
I live in germany and got that for 66 euro per month
@@muhammadhumza265 can u tell me the total price of this laptop
@@m.j.washingdetailingcentre8659 in uk its £849
@@muhammadhumza265 where did you bought it bro? Which shop? Mediamarkt, Notebooksbilliger, Amazon? Right now it is 849€ on sale. Should I buy it?
1080p on a laptop is really not a negative unless it's like £1500+
Totally! I think I'm just salty over the name & way they're marketing to creators - the 1080p is one of the limits for a pro creator. But for most people it won't be an issue at all - Dom
The 512 GB NVMe (Hynix OEM model) was replaced by a 1 TB WD Blue SN 550 NVMe today. Runs like a charm. Note: Someone who needs a high professional business model with Thunderbolt support or docking station connectivity should consider manufacturer lines from Dell, Lenovo, HP etc.
this looks good for me since i need something mobile as a producer and the cpu is better then my old desktop now :DD
Do you have a release date for the refreshed Huawei matebooks with R4500u chips, they are on the Huawei website but can’t seem to find a available date ?
@@dannyh807 On amazon.de the 14 incher is available to buy 7th october, I'm still debating which to get tho, magicbook pro or new matebook.
Is this Magicbook Pro (currently £599 on sale) better than the Huawei Matebook D15 2021- i5, 8gb, 512gb (£499 on sale)?
What's the sound like?
Hello, first of all, beautiful exhaustive video, I wanted to ask if for a main use of office, autocad, streaming, youtube, a lot of multitasking and some light games like minecraft it is better AMD or intel. (If you could answer me you do me a great pleasure because I would like to buy one of the two versions before the discount ends)
I thiiiink for that you'd be best off with the AMD, as for most of that stuff you need CPU power more than GPU. Looks like Autocad is CPU-intensive (so AMD will win there) - main question is the gaming, but for stuff like Minecraft I reckon you'll be fine without a dedicated GPU - Dom
The pro not having a dedicated gpu is quite disappointing. You can buy Huawei matebook d with an nvidia mx gpu, but it is in the body of what is of what is essentially the regular magicbook and it hasn't got a ryzen option, whilst costing the same. It is sad considering the potential it has if done right.
is that display really that wobbly? i noticed around @4:51, it was rocking back and forth while typing
If u notice the camera is shaking not the lid of the laptop.
@@ahmadshafique2018 ofcourse its the laptop, what Re suggesting??
@@RomboutVersluijs dont understand what ur saying but trust me the lid is not wobbly at all. I have this laptop and another reason it isnt wobbly is you cant open this laptop with one hand therefor that indicates the hinge tesnsion is really strong s o another reason it is nit wobbly
Thunderbolt is Intel only feature right? I haven't seen any amd laptops with thunderbolt.
Yup, I should have made that clearer in the video, totally my bad. It's one of the downsides of using an AMD chip, but in that sense not Honor's fault - Dom
We are talking about Thunderbolt version 3 / USB-C - the technical specifications and the use cases can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface) - a standard or a "normal" user do not need Thunderbolt and the interface generates some more complexity and security issues and it makes the device more expensive. In one word: KISS - keep it simple and stupid and check your use case and requirements
Content of Wikipedia: Thunderbolt is the brand name of a hardware interface developed by Intel (in collaboration with Apple) that allows the connection of external peripherals to a computer. Thunderbolt 1 and 2 use the same connector as Mini DisplayPort (MDP), whereas Thunderbolt 3 re-uses the USB-C connector from USB. It was initially developed and marketed under the name Light Peak, and first sold as part of an end user product on 24 February 2011.[1]
So what about battery life on 100% video? Maybe I didn't catch it
Hi! Can it be opened with one hand like Macbook?
No
does anyone know if this can run external graphic card via the USB C port ?
Unfortunately I'm pretty sure no, because it's not Thunderbolt, as that's Intel tech. One of the big limitations here, why I wish it had its own GPU - Dom
I think you have read too much into the "pro" name. It's just like companies tagging their flagship phones as pro or plus.
Can it edit 4k video in Premiere?
Yes
Is google service supported on this laptop?
Are you trolling or just don't know what a laptop is?
Is it okay for music production?
yes!
Absolutely, i bought this laptop few days ago... comparing this to my old one with 8gb of ram and rayzen 2500u, this has 16gb of ram and rayzen 4600h, it is a beast, Fl studio runs like Bolt
I would buy if it was at least 2k display. I like the size, and the AMD 7 series is now available in Europe. So, its the display that will put me off.
Is it compatible with Linux? (dual boots)
I think the question is too advanced for this channel. AskUbuntu or Arch Forum might be a better place to ask this :)
Very Nice book
What is the ram clock speed?
2666Mhz
What i dont get, if this is target for pro users. WHy the hell do they only add 1 USB-C and that is used for charging. Hpw about extra display without using hdmi? But that's probably the price range it has
it has fast charging. so i assume they expect a quick 30min charge will be enough for users to then take out the cable and use it for transfer.
I'm assuming it can transfer data over usbc c?
Thunderbolt is intel tech so you won’t find it on an AMD based laptop and the storage is accessible but not sure about the RAM.
What even is thunderbolt 3?
USB 4 could be worth waiting for...
there is no problem installing the thunderbolt controller in an amd laptop. less than 10 dollars. what you said is a meme. afaik.
william blake there’s only a couple of AMD MB’s that have TB3 support so far and no laptops afaik hopefully that will change with TB4 now intel are opening up the tech a bit more.
Apple said its will try to add support for their AMD chips. Would be nice if other do this as well

Thats a pretty weird European key-board layout. What language or layout is that?
I think this is a German keyboard, though I'm not German so I'm not positive! It's been a good test of my touch typing. And as to the wobbly screen, I think that might actually be a wobbly table! Screen has been absolutely fine for me in that regard - Dom
Yeah, it's a German one
@@ChillaWii Ah i thought so, i saw that U and A on the right and guessed it was a German Layout. Thanks!
Ram is not removable
I think Pro means something else in China: People who go to work in fancy suits. On a different note, other reviews show only 95% of sRGB is supported.
Yeah, it may well be as simple as a cultural thing like that, or just the ongoing trend in tech to turn 'pro' into 'high-end consumer'. And just went and double-checked, and I got 99% sRGB in my test! That was using a SpyderX - Dom
Price 🤔
£850 plus a free gift
Nice
Ram is not removeable. What are you talking bro?
Going by what Honor told me! I didn't crack the thing open myself to check, but the official line from Honor is that while they don't *recommend* users open it up to swap the RAM out, there's no technical reason that users can't, i.e. it's not soldered on - Dom
Yeah, memory is soldered according on articles online
First, there is a ryzen 7 4800h option, I ordered it on aliexpress. Also silver is still available for this pro model and on taobao you can order custom models with 1TB SSD HD, or even 512GB + 1TB HDD combo. The reviewer has no idea what they're talking about. Btw it's called PRO because it's for working professionals, the reason it's 16 by 10 is so that we can read more excel spreadsheet, not for gaming/creative.
But it’s 16:9...
those are the only specs available when buying in europe
@@BriuSS I assume you mean from official resellers? I guess I haven't been buying anything from "official resellers" for while now, both amazon and aliexpress seem to carry the variations, aliexpress is quite a bit cheaper.
As I said in the video - in China there's a Ryzen 7 option, so sure you can import that, but it isn't part of the official European launch. And if Honor didn't make it for creatives, then someone should have told whoever scripted their IFA press conference announcing it! - Dom
Is anyone bothered by the German keyboard? I want to buy this laptop but I do type a lot, and don't want it to be too annoying.
I don't think you'd get a German keyboard if you bought it! That was just the model they sent me to review, I assume all their review units were European. I would expect that you should get the right keyboard for your country if you buy one - Dom
First!
