  • Antonio Esfandiari does battle once again with the tricky businessman Bill Perkins. The hand starts innocently enough with a standard raise and some callers. However, Perkins springs a big raise on the turn and bombs the river, prompting the 3-time bracelet winner to give a speech. What on earth should he do here?

@@joshwillett13 when he said "donation" and acted like he was throwing the chips in, then pulled back.
It's debatable if it's a real angle. Players like Ivey used to always do things like cut out the calling chips. Move them around, etc. and look for reactions. This is much less prevalent now as people have learned live tells aren't very reliable mostly.
Personally, it's whatever. I consider an "angle" to be something of ill intent. Something like this, trying to get a reaction, or needling a friend (these guys are all friends and play together often).....don't bother me.

Hi Doug, Thank you for all of these videos. I watch it a lot, here on UA-cam, on Twitch, trying to learn as much as I can. However, there are all these advice from pros, which hands to open, how to play pre flop generally, how to play post flop, when to bet, book from this guy, book from that guy, Jennifear openning charts and everything seems straight forward. So if you are doing what you are told you should be profitable. But then I see for example Lex Vildhuis opening some crazy hands from early positions or making these weird plays post flop and often ending up busted while generally being profitable. It’s not just him, that is only an example, I see that very often. When I try to implement some of that play I am a “donk”, a “fish”, throwing my chips away and in often I end up busted as well. Or these allin bluffs with garbage hands in late tournament phases (I am talking mostly about online tournaments) when you pray no one is going to call you. When I play my usual game which is a bit tighter (and more by the book in my opinion) I end up deeper in tournaments bur rarely reach the final phase. Usually I end up min cashing or something. What do you think about this? Could you please give me some piece of advice? Sorry for a long comment and thank you. Cheers

How do you balance a situation where your hand is either a good hand to bluff raise/barrel with on the turn but not on the river? When you raise the turn with a good hand to raise i.e. 67 no clubs and the river comes a club, your hand is no longer a great hand to bet with on the river (since you want at least one club). And the flipside. If you raised with KJcc and the river bricks out, barreling with a busted flush draw isn't a good idea because you block the missed clubs of your opponent. Which hands are better for double barrelling when you completely miss both the turn and the river?

    I have two questions:
First: Why no comment about Antonio's light angleshooting?
Second: Would Perkins bet a flush for value after the board pairs? Would he bet trips for value if he was bluffing with a 6 on the turn? Or does he only have full houses in his range, and maybe a nut flush, but not any of the non-nut flushes? (okay, this one is a multi-part question I guess)

    • @nitzhogoa3926

Doug, there's one thing about the logic about having a club or not.. on the turn we want to call without a club and fold with a club, but then on this river we don't have hands with a club in them, cant perkins just barrel every time and we now have to fold because we don't have hands with clubs in them as those folded turn? (Besides boats, how can we call without club hands?)
You say to fold K♧Tx on turn but call with no club, but then say to fold this hand with no club on river and call with A♧Ax but that K♧Tx is better on the turn to call but that's getting folded... lol
So we call/raise with T8 and boats...
Some of the logic is conflicting on the turn vs river

Perkins is being ackward by blinking, making eye contact but... he tried to not to let that little smirk out. It's a micro expression and everything else he was doing at the table screams. [*starts staring* "I want to know if you believe my lie." *blinks a lot* "I would be so happy if I got away with this." *Shows contempt half smile* he's not folding I can't smile yet!*] and we all know these actions as poker players could all be fake and the exact opposite but I've never thought twice after picking up a micro expression like that knowing my hand is good. Unless the villain had any history of a good Hollywood or knew I looked for specific scenarios like this I'm almost able to snap call!

I think the overbet hurt perky here, yes ppl do that sometimes 2 think like there bluffing and actually have it so they get called but would you bet that much if it have a flush? He's not raising 20k on turn with a 6. Would he raise 20 k with kj clubs on turn? Possible but unlikely in my opinion. While it's no an easy call I think it's a call...

I know it’s a somewhat friendly game and I love Antonio, but I really don’t like all the pump faking with the chips before he calls. Sets a bad precedent going forward and someone would be well within their rights to really take issue with it.

Question. When Antonio says "Donation cuz I love u" and kind of half throws out his chips for a read.. is it an angle to say "Yep, I got it" or something.. What do u think? Cuz Antonio is pretending like he's going to call for a reaction .. so is giving him a reaction an angle?
I think this reaction goes a long way cuz esfandiari and perki have a long history and often times when you take a big pot off a "friend" you tend to show a little more sympathy. So if Antonio goes "Donation cuz I love u" and almost throws in his chips, if bill can say it with a straight face like "ya i got it i got it" show a little empathy for taking the pot off his "friend" I think antonio would or should insta muck. Do you think you should do that?

Amazing read and call but disgusting angle shoot. One really wonders why such a successful player feels he has to resort to such base tactics.

Just a question why exactly would it be better for Antonio to have a King with a spade then a club, because my reasoning would be that a king with a club would be blocking his flush draw bluffs?

    • @Cowtymsmiesznego
      @Cowtymsmiesznego 6 років тому

That's what Doug said, yes. You want your opponent to be bluffing with a king of clubs, if you're calling on the turn.
