these guys were 3 years too early. if they would have hit north america in '93 they would have been much more popular. they deserve so much recognition for their influences. one of my favourite bands ever.... and that says a lot for a band who only released ONE album.
Their song was released in '93 as theme music for "So I Married an Axe Murderer". Fun film with great scenic shots of San Francisco before the city was overwhelmed with ugly buildings.

My friend was their AandR man. I saw them at the Riverside in Newcastle in 1988 at a time everyone wanted to play there. And they were arguing onstage then. But brilliant. Imagine they'd met a George Martin about then. They could have been anything. Next to Darlene Love's first appearance, this is the most I've seen Letterman's band having an absolute blast. It's all very impressive.

When you hear the radio release, it sounds like a 90s cover of a 60s song that still sounds perfectly fresh and musically relevant ...when it's actually an 80s song that didn't sound much like any other music of that moment. Such a fascinating, simple, beautiful little gem. Verses that are their own refrain? Just fantastic. So brief and perfect that I can never listen to it just once!
@Natanael Garcia auto tracking was when the tape of vhs etc would slip off the heads a bit and you either had auto tracking that would re-aline the tape onto the heads or you could sometimes fix it by tapping up or down on the channel selector button on a remote lol It was a fucing nightmare 😂 happened a lot when you recorded (pirated) one vhs to another onto cheap market stall blank tapes. .....well that's what I always assumed it was when we had to do it but I could be totally wrong mechanically

@carig121 The La's, based on that album and that "barely released one single studio album" helped them become one of the most influential bands in British rock and help set forth Madchester, Britpop, The Libertines, etc, etc. They are underrated as a band because their influence is much further reaching than most might think.
I have found that out lately Stephen. Can't get enough. Endless and Lee's vocal sound effects are just... superhuman. If they reform again I'm flying to England, no question.

'Scouse' is the widely used nickname for their regional/city accent (therefore a person can be called 'Scouse' OR 'a Scouser'. Some people in nearby outlying city areas don't like the tag even though the accent sounds the same (but softer) to an outsider. 'Scouse' is also a simple but famous local food recipe (best google/wikki it all, not much space here). ;-)
Actually, this was often the case with Letterman. The show insisted that the in-house band play with the groups. If the band was from out-of-town, they were only allowed to bring a few "key" members to appear on the show--to save on expenses, I'm guessing. I'm sure there were exceptions. I heard this from a musician friend at the time who thought it was shitty that all band members didn't get to have their big TV moment. The band was having so much fun here.

Actually, this was often the case with Letterman. The show insisted that the in-house band play with the groups. If the band was from out-of-town, they were only allowed to bring a few "key" members to appear on the show--to save on expenses, I'm guessing. I'm sure there were exceptions. I heard this from a musician friend at the time who thought it was shitty that all band members didn't get to have their big TV moment. The band was having so much fun here.
