    Honestly I really liked James and The Giant Peach because as I got older I realized it's more than just a whimsical interesting animation. In my mind at least it's a story on a boy who's running away from an abusive and/or neglectful household. The animated parts {Both stop motion and not} are the child's imagination and a way to keep him from falling apart mentally and emotionally as he runs from the only thing he knows.
    On a different note, one of my actual favorite Stop Motion movies is Kubo and The Two Strings. I already knew the original story decently well and was glad it followed what I remembered from reading the original years before the movie came out. It has little details you really only see in Laika films and Nightmare Before Christmas. Also, as an added bonus with Kubo, it won a world record.

      Try being whimsical on the toilet, Doug did it and was deemed insane.😂

  • @MinimalistTheatre333
    @MinimalistTheatre333 6 років тому +39

    Maybe James and the Giant Peach might have been a little better if it was either live-action or animated instead of a mixture of live-action and stop-motion animation. It wouldn't help the writing or singing, but it might have made it more tolerable.

    • @slashermaster28
      @slashermaster28 6 років тому +5

      I dunno, I find it kind of funny how the film points out when James becomes stop-motion and plays it completely straight. (Say what you will about The Page Master, but it at least made sense in that film. Here, it's basically a stylistic choice)

    • @poweroffriendship2.0
      @poweroffriendship2.0 6 років тому +4

      Well, it's a great movie. But why you said that the movie should have been one form instead of hybrid? It's the best choice.

    What's odd about James and Nightmare is they were both Henry Selick, Tim Burton, Denise Di Novi productions, James and the Giant Peach had Susan Sarandon and Nightmare had her ex, Chris Sarandon. One you rated as being one of the worst ever made, the other the very best ever made (and, oddly enough, having seen both, I will agree with you, Phantomic one).

      Charlie And The Chocolate Factory mixed humor and Burton's creepiness a fair bit better, IMO. I think my favorite is Coraline. I just really enjoy the story and ideas in that movie, though I agree the Nightmare before Christmas is probably technically the best if only because it is so much more memorable and more timeless. It was also the first movie that really wowed me with stop motion and dynamic camera shots. I used to to hate it seeing the super static shots in Rudolph movies(unpopular opinion I know, but I personally don’t like it, though I’m sure much hard work went into it). I love stop motion now. I think some other honorable mentions should be corpse bride for some stunning visuals and paranorman for the 2nd half and ending.

    I know that Coraline got an honorable mention but I feel like Kubo should have also gotten an honorable mention. Yeah, the story is predictable, I was able to figure it out pretty early on when I saw it in the theater at least but it's still a good story with some great visuals. Personally, I feel like it's the best thing to come from Laika, I might be a tad bias on my feelings towards Laika because I do live in Beaverton & actually do have some connections, mostly have friends of friends but still, hard to not know someone, even if they are an acquaintance, that works for Laika if you live in Beaverton. A friend of mine even got a tour of the studio because she's an artist & was looking for work, she's the friend of the friend I mentioned earlier, since her & her family knows people there, they got to hook her up with the tour & she knew about the Box Trolls before much was released to the public. She wasn't allowed to share much but she told me what she could on it & I relayed that information to a friend of mine who's studying to become an animator, he holds claymation in high regards & was excited to hear about it since he is such a Laika fanboy, he even moved closer to where their studio is. I guess Kubo & the Two Strings is just one of my personal favorites & doesn't line up with the mass majority of which is all cool, I was kinda hoping on it getting an honorable mention but oh well.

    • @pootisbear
      @pootisbear 6 років тому +17

      For the record I think Kubo deserves more than an honourable mention and your opinion is closer to the mass majority than you might think, Kubo is literally laika's best reviewed movie critically but the unfortunate thing is that it failed commercially. It's a beautiful movie in the most literal sense of the word and I honest to god can't say I've seen any finer and fluent stop motion animation to date. Travis Knight the director of this movie really needs to be given more credit, he was Laika's lead animator for a bunch of their previous films and even contributed to Kubo's animation whilst simultaneously directing the movie. Hell now he's actually became the CEO of Laika. The upcoming Bumblebee movie is going to be his live action directorial debut and whilst people have every right to be skeptical considering how much of a garbage heap the transformers movies are, knowing Knight's previous track records and what he's said in interviews about his vision for the movie I have genuine hope that it'll be great. I respect Phantom's opinions and what not but I honestly cannot lie, I was super disappointed that Kubo was nowhere to be found in this video.

    Fun fact: In Roald Dahl's original book of James and the Giant Peach, the reason his parents got killed was because James and his parents went to London to do some shopping and a rhinoceros had escaped from the nearby London Zoo and ate them on a crowded street. This shows how the writers of the movie didn't read the book properly.

    • @brandonspain12345
      @brandonspain12345 2 роки тому +7

      Yeah but the Rhino had no bearing in the rest of the story like if there was no villain. Also, in the book, the Rhino LITERALLY ate his parents despite them being vegetarian. It just shows how little research the author did on them. Many fans even like to believe the aunts made the movie's depiction to scare and further manipulate James because he's simply a kid. I actually liked what they did with the Rhino BETTER than the book because they actually made it to a psychological fear for James that he has to conquer in order to stand up to his aunts. The changes in the movie IMO worked better. Like instead of weird cloud people, it's badass Jack Skellington pirates. Even the author's aunt fell in love with the movie's changes and felt it would be a movie her husband would've loved. So there's that.

    Stop motion has been around since the early days of film but claymation has been around for less time, something around the time you stated. Just wanted to clear that up since I have a bit of a soft spot for both forms of animation (thanks in large part to "Wallace and Gromit" when I was growing up).

    I wholeheartedly agree with your list on this topic. Also I had absolutely no idea you had Aspergers, Strider. That's a interesting fact to know of one of my favorite UA-camrs. I never would judge it as a negative or a problem, though. I have been diagnosed with two mental disabilities myself, so I can more or less understand. Mary and Max is absolute favorite of mine because I feel that it's a movie that truly understands disabled people in general. While the world would tell us we're different and some would choose to believe that curing disabilities is doing us a favor, most of us don't want to change and would rather celebrate it as traits that shaped us as people.

    The Corpse Bride is another amazing stop motion animated movie, and is one of my sisters favorites(along with Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas). I really don't know why he mentioned Sheldon during that discussion. The show writers have stated in an interview that they don't intend for Sheldon to be on the autism spectrum. Rather, he's just socially awkward and a bit detached from reality on occasion. They then went on to say that Sheldon can be interpreted however the viewer wants.

      No, you're not. Strider even said it's a cult classic. Just because two famous online reviewers don't like it doesn't mean everyone hates it. Heck, if you've seen the NC's review, you'll notice the entire running gag throughout it was him pretending to like it so the fans wouldn't kill him. If the film wasn't popular, there'd be no inspiration for that painfully forced and unfunny joke.

    I wish Paranorman had been on the list, at least as an honorable mention. It may not have been as imaginative or explored the mind too extensively, but it did touch beautifully on fear, bullying, and being different. I absolutely love its twist on zombies and how it portrayed the 'witch' as how people once saw 'witches', the injustice the accused faced, and how people love to blow up a good scary story while ignoring the weight of the truth. Norman himself was portrayed as the 'different kid' who had trouble fitting in and faced terrible bullying, something that many people can relate to easily.
