Lost power? Smoke? - How to pressure test Turbo hoses & Intercooler

- As part of a series going over this BMW Diesel engine in a Freelander 1 TD4 in order to reduce its smoke, this was a test I did for checking for turbo air leaks. If the engine isn’t getting enough turbo boost and hence not enough air then the fuel to air ratio will go up, increasing smoke and power will also go down. This is stage 7 of a series of smoke reduction tests and fixes.

Just got my NP200 1.5 DCI and I realized that there’s oil on the inter cooler and the turbo makes a noise when accelerating and breaking after driving for about 350km, there’s also presence of oil on the pipes coming from the turbo, can you be able to relate these issue?
Oil in the intercooler could be from the turbo (worn bearing / seal so a new core needed) or it could be from the crankcase breather pipes (check where these go and see if there is oil in it, if there is try an oil separater tank in line with the pipe.
I’ve just bought a free lander 56 Reg 2 L diesel automatic BMW engineJust found out the turbo is gone not good but I love the car great video
Thanks. It’s worth checking that the crankcase breather filter is not blocked as that can force oil out of the turbo and look like a turbo failure. Mine was like that. It was all ok after changing it to the upgraded part and cleaning the intercooler of oil. See ua-cam.com/video/FQwZrjGUN-o/v-deo.html
Hi, when doing coolant flush. I left some tissue inside intercooler and forgot about it. It has blocked the intercooler air. Car lost power. After discovering. I found oil inside intercooler, and turbo seems working fine. However when reassemble everything back. I noticed white smoke from turbo housing area. And exhaust fume smell. And yet turbo is working perfectly when it should. Can you help please
If it is just smoke from the outside of the turbo maybe it is just surface oil that will burn off with use. Check that no oil is leaking from the oil feeds into and out of the turbo. You will need to remove the bottom engine cover to check it.
@@comeinhandynow thank you, cleaned everything with carb cleaner, all gone now. it was old engine oil been burn off.
I dont have any pressure on those hoses how to fix it?
My english is not so good because i am from romania
Plug any holes. Find the holes first. Change hose if needed.
@@comeinhandynow ive changed all the hoses but no pressure
If the pipes are leaking ‘ why does this cause smoking.
Lowers the air pressure so not enough air gets in the engine so there’s too much diesel compared to the amount of air
