  • Turbochargers Explained | How Single, Twin-Scroll, VGT & Electric Turbocharger Works?
    Turbocharger:
    A turbocharger often called a turbo, is a gas compressor. It is used to force air into an internal combustion engine. A turbocharger is a form of forced induction.
    It compresses the intake gas forcing more air into the engine to produce more power for a given displacement. They have greater power density, and they are more efficient. A turbocharger is connected to an engine to give it more power.
    At the most basic level, a turbocharger consists of just three major components: the turbine, the compressor, and the bearing system that supports the turbine shaft, connecting the turbine and compressor wheels together.
    Working:
    As the engine is running, the exhaust gases would otherwise be wasted, but on a turbocharged engine, these exhaust gases pass through the turbo, which spins one fan called the turbine.
    The turbine wheel is responsible for converting heat and pressure into rotational force. As the turbine wheel rotates, it spins the turbine shaft, which spins the compressor wheel.
    As you see, the compressor wheel has a fixed connection to the turbine wheel via a standard shaft, so when the turbine wheel spins, the compressor wheel also spins. The compressor’s job is to suck air into the turbocharger, pressurize it, and force it into the engine intake manifold. And from there, into your combustion chamber, this air compression helps turbocharged engines produce more power at normal atmospheric pressure.
    Components of Turbocharger:
    Other main components of a turbocharger are a wastegate, intercooler, actuator bearing system, and oil supply. The wastegate is a valve that controls the number of exhaust gases that flow through the turbine. It regulates the boost pressure and prevents the turbocharger from overspeeding.
    Intercooler: An intercooler is used to cool the compressed air from the compressor before entering the engine. This helps to increase the density of the air, which results in more oxygen available for combustion and more power from the engine.
    Oil supply and Drain: Turbocharger needs lubrication and cooling. Thus, it's connected to the engine's oil supply system to provide lubrication and cooling to the bearings and shaft. Also, it has a drain system to remove the oil that has circulated through the turbo.
    Bearing system: The bearing system is a set of bearings that support the shaft and allows it to rotate smoothly and efficiently. The bearing system also helps maintain the turbocharger's proper operating conditions.

    Fun fact: The Roots-style superchargers are older than the piston engine itself and were first in use to pump air into iron furnaces.

    • @BigUriel
      @BigUriel Рік тому +9

      A roots supercharger is a lobe pump, they already existed before piston engines, it was only when one was fitted to an engine that it started being called a supercharger. Centrifugal compressors also existed long before, as did turbines. Again it was only when one was fitted to an engine that they started calling it a turbocharger.

    If it gets to be electric, then we can even use a reciprocating pump, eliminating rotors altogether. Far more efficient and a small pump can produce all the pressure needed. In fact, a little cylinder can store a certain amount of compressed air to open up and supply the extra air to the engine as soon as it starts up.

    Saying that turbos are more compact than superchargers is wrong. The full assembly of a supercharger literally comprehends the supercharger and the pulley with the belt. A turbocharger unit in the other hand consists of the turbo, the whole intake manifold, the exhaust from the engine to the hot side of the turbine, the wastegate, the oil line to the turbo and this is the essential; imagine the space that this system occupies with all the sensors and electrical harness, the intercooler, and the pop-off valve with the screamer exhausts.

    • @krolon9786
      @krolon9786 3 дні тому

      You very much do not want to aircool your exhaust, you're gonna take energy away from it and it won't be able to spool the turbine, plus you'd probably melt the cooler anyway. Consider water cooled turbo. There's also oil coolers if you're worried about overheating your oil. Anyway, if you want to DIY then you have to EXTENSIVELY research the topic of boosting or you risk blowing your engine. Or just give it to someone experienced, boosting is not cheap anyway.

      He’s wrong in that, twin turbo and bi turbo mean the same thing, the turbos are both the same size.

      It floats on a oil film :D the small 0.8 smart engines rev their turbo up to 120k already

      You can hear a turbo . Though it can reach higher notes than any singer. Maybe listen to a video with a big single turbo. Less scary RPM.

      I used the work for an air bearing company & we made drills that ran over 300,000rpm. Because the bearing is air,there isn't heat build up.
      Have a look @ Westwind airbearings.

    Not sure if I agree with a lot of the comparisons to superchargers. The latter can use a standard manifold, downpipe and exhaust, doesn't need an intercooler for lower boost applications, requires less complex vacuum systems, fits more directly to the engine making it easier to install etc.
    I suspect the turbo is more common because it can be driven off boost which will fudge the MPG and emissions figures. A supercharger is always on, always adding boost from idle to redline.

      In a gasoline engine the throttle leverages the turbo to expand the pressure range. With a supercharger driven of the crankshaft, the compressor and throttle fight each other.

      Definitely more power potential with a turbo set up, although at higher cost and more complicated packaging as you said.
